For all intents and purposes, two innings doomed the Burbank High softball team when it faced Crescente Valley on Thursday afternoon at McCambridge Park.

Getting the early jump, the Falcons scored three runs in the first and second innings and held on for an 8-5 Pacific League triumph.

“After that we settled down,” Burbank coach Mike Delaney said of the first two frames. “They put pressure on you and we didn’t handle that pressure very well.”

Eight batters trotted to the plate in the opening stanza against sophomore Alyssa Porras, who went one and two-third innings initially, two and two-third overall, walking five with six hits allowed.

Five of the first six batters were safe including a bases-loaded walk to sophomore Viviana Bocanegra that forced in senior Jessica Yzaguirre (four hits), who led off with an infield single.

Sophomore Ryan Eldred (three singles) later added a two-run smash to right field that brought home sophomore Alyssa Hernandez, who walked and freshman Maddie De Leon (three hits), who drilled a single up the middle.

Crescenta Valley’s cushion was extended to 6-0 in the second inning when nine hitters marched to the dish.

De Leon’s two-out booming triple to left center scored Yzaguirre, who was safe on an infield single and Hernandez, who walked.

It became 6-0 on a bloop single to right center by Bocanegra off junior Allie Benson, who went four and one-third innings, walking six, with three hit batters, six hits surrendered and one strikeout, that brought in De Leon.

“Our pitchers were not hitting their spots,” Delaney said of his duo that combined to allow 11 walks and 12 hits with three hit batters.

Burbank (11-13 and 7-5 in league) cut the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second when junior Bene Snyder (two hits) had an infield single off junior Emily Mulcahey (seven innings while scattering 12 hits, walking two, with four strikeouts and one hit batter) that drove in junior Macie Jensen, who walked.

The Bulldogs chipped away and made it a three-run deficit with a two-run third inning as sophomore Sarah Garelick (two hits) rifled a single to center field that knocked in junior Melissa Daniel, who led off with a walk and junior Anysia Gonzalez, who reached base on an infield single.

“We’re a confident offensive team,” Delaney noted. “We don’t fear too many pitchers. But we had three strikeouts in critical situations.”

Burbank trimmed Crescenta Valley’s lead to 6-4 with a tally in the fourth inning when Daniel’s double to left field plated sophomore Amaya Broyls, who singled to center.

A two-run frame in the sixth by the Falcons (18-7-1 and 10-2 in league) pushed the lead to 8-4 as Eldred led off with a single to right center and later came around on an error while sophomore Peyton Hause’s run-scoring hit to center scored sophomore Kristy Taix, who laid down a sacrifice bunt and went to second base on an error.

The Bulldogs made it a three-run deficit with a run in the seventh when junior Erin Lashkari clubbed a long leadoff triple to left center and crossed the plate on Jensen’s single to right field.

Burbank sophomore Alex Davis doubled, junior Anysia Gonzalez singled twice and freshman Katie Treadway also singled.

Don’t Let Celebrating Cinco De Mayo Land You in Jail

Cinco de Mayo is a time for fun and celebration but sadly, has also become a deadly holiday due to impaired driving-related vehicle collisions.

Each year, thousands of people are killed in
vehicle crashes attributed to drugs and alcohol. Over the years, hundreds of these deaths were a result of impaired driving crashes during the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

(File Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

This weekend, the Burbank Police Department along with police agencies nationwide will
increase patrol efforts to enforce drug and alcohol-related driving offenses.

The purpose of these enforcement efforts is to reduce the amount of alcohol and drug-related vehicle crashes, injuries and deaths. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, education classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000, not to mention the embarrassment often associated with arrest.

Burbank PD supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs, particularly those
with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol and/or other
drugs, and can result in a DUI.
The Burbank Police Department would like to remind the community to enjoy and celebrate Cinco de Mayo by enlisting the help of a designated driver.

Plan your sober ride home before the party begins this Cinco de Mayo. Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free nonalcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more. The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.
The Burbank Police Department wishes you a safe and happy Cinco de Mayo along with the
California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,
reminding everyone to “Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1.”

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: The Beach Boys Burbank Connection

If you have ever listened to a Beach Boys Greatest Hits Record (yes I said Record) or you have heard this song on classic radio, you can’t forget the lively tune and the chorus “Be True to Your School…”!

All of this was brought about by Burbank High School Drill team member and super loyal student Jodi Gable. Here is her story as related in the book “The Blue and White Wave High” 2008 for the BHS Centennial…

Jodi Gable 1964

As a child growing up in Burbank, Jodi Gable (Class of 1965) fondly remembers the grape arbors that filled the hillside above her house and describes her life as living in “a Norman Rockwell painting.” When Jodi was 13 she met the Beach Boys at an Olive Rec Center dance and was amazed at their sound. After talking with them they asked her to head up their fan club. After her parents met the Wilsons (parents of Brian, Dennis and Carl), Jodi began hanging out with the boys, who treated her like a sister, and building fan support.

“I loved BHS and couldn’t wait to get to school each day,” she recalls. “I called Dr. Leland, ‘Unc,’ and I had teachers who really seemed to care.” Jodi was an active member of the Drill Team, and her loyalty to BHS became the genesis of one of their hits. Jodi recalls, “Brian Wilson was a genius and could come up with lyrics on the spot.

We were eating chili fries one day at an A&W in Hawthorne and he penned, ‘Fun, Fun, Fun.’” Jodi was driving the guys crazy with her drill team stories and Wilson came up with “Be True to your School” (which coincidently contains part of “On Wisconsin,” Burbank’s fight song).

On her 16th birthday, the Beach Boys threw a party and performed in her back yard.

By the end of her junior year the band’s popularity meant greater demands on her time. Jodi left BHS and finished at Hollywood Professional School in order to work for the Beach Boys full time. At the time she was dating Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and was in the middle of the exploding 1960’s music scene.

Eventually Jodi hired some of her classmates to join her staff and to help answer fan mail. She stayed with the band until she was twenty, and then went on to her own singing career.

Jodi resides in Oregon with her husband, but has stayed connected to her classmates and has always remained true to her school.”

When you hear this Fun song from the golden era of surf music just remember Jodi and  Burbank High School.

( no hard feelings Burroughs J )

And just in case you have not heard this fine classic rock song here is a link! Or listen below. Enjoy, Crank it up!

Burroughs Baseball Loses To Crescenta Valley In Five Innings

It took roughly 40 minutes to play and when it was over an unexpected offensive avalanche hit the Burroughs High baseball team.

After that first inning, Crescenta Valley managed one run, but the sum resulted in a 10-0, five-inning victory for the Falcons in a Pacific League match on Friday at Tomahawk Field.

It was a long day for Burroughs which collected one hit and fell to Crescenta Valley 10-0 in five innings. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Three days earlier, when these two met at Stengel Field, the Falcons, who are ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division II and now own a 22-game winning skein, prevailed 4-0.

The victim was sophomore pitcher Niccolo Chuidian, who faced seven batters and collected one out before being lifted in favor of senior Matthew Rudas.

“I tried to find my rhythm, but I couldn’t,” Chuidian said of his poor outing in which he walked three, hit a batter with one hit allowed. “It happens to everyone. But I’ve got to learn from it. It’s a tough loss.”

Rudas ventured four and two-third innings, surrendering four hits with four walks, one hit batter and five strikeouts.

“This was a case of a great pitcher who wasn’t on,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said. “I’m not worried about that [letdown]. It was an aberration.”

Sherwood continued: “It happens to good teams and we’re a good team,” he said.

Riley Hooper, shown on the mound in a recent game, had the only hit for the Indians in the fourth inning. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Chuidian walked leadoff hitter senior Kewin Ledesma and then hit freshman Will Grimm with an offering.

Senior Scott Vinceri popped up to Chuidian, who then walked junior Trevor Beer, the opposing pitcher.

Senior Nico Arredondo grounded a potential double-play ball to senior shortstop Justin Palafox, who bobbled it for an error.

“Once he hit it and the runner was moving, he blocked my view,” Palafox said of the rare miscue. “We’re going to pick up our heads. Monday we have practice. We have a chance to play Burbank twice this week.”

The Indians are 12-12 and 7-5 in league and will visit the Bulldogs (9-3 in the Pacific League) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and will host Burbank on Friday at 6 p.m.

Up stepped senior Max Meyer, who lined a booming double to right center that brought in three runners.

When Chuidian walked senior Jaimy Blank, his work was over. Rudas then allowed an infield hit to senior Charles Weinmann that scored a run.

After senior William Rees singled to left, a bases-loaded walk to Ledesma forced in another run and Beer’s single up the middle plated two runners that capped the nine-run, four-hit frame.

“You can’t see that coming,” Crescenta Valley coach Phil Torres said of the final lopsided score. “They were a double play away from getting out of that.”

The Falcons (24-1 and 12-0 in league), who are a game ahead of second-place Arcadia, added a run in the fourth inning when Beer doubled to center field and scored on Blank’s one-out grounder.

Beer allowed just one hit, a leadoff single to right center in the fourth inning from senior Riley Hooper.

Beer then fanned senior Erik Gonzalez, junior Brandon Giraldo and junior Steven Gonzalez.

“I’m not complaining,” said Beer, who struck out nine and walked three with one hit batter of the first-inning explosion. “I went to the bullpen and kept loose.”

More than 400 members of the Burbank community gathered for the sixth annual Arts For All Foundation gala, Party For The Arts, on April 21.

Over $100,000 in net revenue was raised by the event to support the Burbank Arts For All Foundation’s grant making program and community engagement efforts, in addition to the Foundation’s on-going operations.

“While we are going to have a lot more fun here tonight, we take our work very seriously — and there is still so much work to be done,” Carrie Brown, Chair of the Board of Directors, told the audience that evening. “While we will continue to support teachers needing critical arts supplies or materials for an innovative project, we are excited that the District is determining the three-year priorities for their Arts for All plan.”

“We are ready to deepen our partnership with them and our community to make larger, more impactful, sustainable gifts that will help the district meet critical priorities and strengthen existing programs.”

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

“My favorite part of the night – beyond witnessing all of our guests dancing on the dance floor – was incorporating those directly impacted by some of the investments we have made in arts education,” commented Executive Director Trena Pitchford.

“From greeting guests with the talents of John Burroughs High School’s Vocal Music students, to hearing Avra Warsofsky share the impact of the arts on Magnolia Park School, to seeing high school students Micangelo Ferrante and Brighton Thomas perform on stage and, finally, the testimony of Walt Disney Elementary School Principal, Molly Hwang, and 3rd grade student Morgan Wright, who closed the evening’s program with, ‘The arts are something to look forward to during a day full of tests. The arts is something that you can do at any age, any time, any place.’”

The Party For The Arts event honored Woodbury University as Patron of the Arts, David Starr Jordan Middle School teacher Christine DeMore as Arts For All Educator and Brenda Burroughs with Champion of the Arts Award.

Burroughs Boys Volleyball Makes Incredible Rally Past Newbury Park

Being on the brink of elimination is not an easy spot to be in.
The Burroughs High boys’ volleyball team never took that into consideration Tuesday night when the Indians hosted Newbury Park in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
Burroughs rallied from being one point away from the end of its season seven times to come back and defeat the visiting Panthers 25-21, 26-28, 23-25, 31-29, 15-13.
“We don’t want to stress it being a stressful situation. We played it just like normal volleyball knowing that we have to play perfect,” said junior Cole Kaitz, who had a team-high 23 kills.
Burroughs (18-13) will move on to the second round Thursday at Huntington Beach, which defeated Canyon of Anaheim Hills 25-21, 26-24, 25-21.
Huntington Beach (24-10) is clearly not as strong as in recent years. A year ago, the Oilers saw their national-record winning streak end at 121 matches.
The Indians earned the right to play the Oilers after rallying from a 24-20 deficit in the fourth game to force a fifth game, where Burroughs won 15-13.
“The guys showed a lot of heart tonight. It was awesome, awesome to see,” Burroughs coach Joel Brinton said. ” That’s a really good team (Newbury Park).”
Kaitz agreed.
“They’re definitely one of the high-level teams we’ve played this year,” Kaitz said of Newbury Park. “We knew if we battled with them we’d pull it out. We needed to play how we know how to play.”
Senior Conner Ludlum helped ignite the rally as he had back-to-back kills to make 24-22 in the fourth game.
Junior Diego Rosal also came up with a big with one of his four blocks during the rally. Ludlum finished with 18 kills and 21 digs. Jarrett Malone had 21 kills for Burroughs.
Senior libero Skyler Bercini finished with 29 digs, a school record. Setter Levi Benitez had 58 assists.
Burroughs won the first game by breaking away following a 21-21 tie thanks to kills from Ludlum, Malone and Everett Kanoho.
In the fifth and final game, Burroughs broke a tie at 13 with a block by Billy Singleton. A Newbury Park error decided the final point of the match.

The William McKinley Elementary School community celebrated the school’s 90th birthday with the McKinley Community Fair on May 3.

Memorabilia from 1930 through 2017 was on display and entertainment was provided by the Jordan Middle School jazz band and the McKinley Hip Hop Club. One act from the school musical was also performed.

TK, Kinder and first grade students sang under the direction of their music teacher, Eric Garcia, who is provided through Education Through Music – Los Angeles.

Attendees were treated to a free dinner, sponsored by former McKinley student Michael Cusumano of the Cusumano Realty Group.

McKinley PTA, Boosters, Art Club, Garden Club, GATE program, Dual Immersion program and ELAC program representatives had booths at the McKinley Community Fair, along with several community groups including the Burbank Police and Fire Departments, BTAC, Burbank Parks and Rec, the Burbank Public Library, the YMCA and more.

“We had a great turnout and everyone really enjoyed the community fair as well as going into the classrooms to see all of amazing things our students learned this year,” commented Principal Liz Costella who organizes the event each year. “Everyone seemed to have a really good time and they enjoyed seeing all of the resources from our community.”

“McKinley’s Community Fair and Open House is one of my favorite events each year,” said parent Karen Bowlin, mother of a first-grader and Kindergarten student. “It’s amazing to see the greater Burbank community supporting our elementary school and its families.”

“From our emergency services to family support to the band from Jordan Middle School, where our students will one day attend, the families in our school are able to interact and learn about everything available around us. In turn, our students get to teach both their parents and the community about what they are learning and the different ideas they are busy exploring each day with tours of the classrooms and the school at large.”

“Embracing the community, both within our schools and around our neighborhood, is what McKinley is all about – so it was fitting to celebrate the school’s 90th birthday at the Community Fair with the community that has supported it for all these years,” Bowlin added.

“I was very impressed with the turnout, and the fun atmosphere of the event,” said parent Paul Herman. “I believe one of the most critical elements to an exceptional school is parental involvement. It seems to me that [Costella is] doing a good job of fostering that in our school community.”

JBHS Drama Presents “To Kill A Mockingbird”

The John Burroughs High School Drama Department presents Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill A Mockingbird on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 12 – 14.

Adapted by Christopher Sergel, the play chronicles a series of violent events in a small town in Alabama in 1935, loosely based on real events Lee experienced as a child in the Deep South. The story is as relevant today as when it was originally published in 1960.

(Photo Courtesy John Burroughs High School Drama Department)

Told through the eyes of two children – Scout and Jem Finch – To Kill A Mockingbird examines prejudice, justice and moral conscience when a young black man is wrongfully charged with the rape of a white girl.

“It is such a pleasure to work with students who are able to handle this sensitive material in such a mature way,” commented JBHS Drama Director Guy Myers. “They have been dedicated throughout the process, and the seniors have done an excellent job of mentoring all of the new students.”

(Photo Courtesy John Burroughs High School Drama Department)

“We have so many freshmen in the main cast for this show, and the new energy has invigorated our rehearsals!” he added. “We have collaborated with our wonderful woodshop teacher, John Benne, on building the sets, and of course the amazing tech students, led by the talented Jon King.”

“I have absolutely loved working on this production,” said student producer Talya Cohen. “It’s really incredible to see this show step by step, and it seems I only get more emotionally invested as time goes on.”

“There is an equal part new and old faces in this show so it was great to see them learning and growing together as an ensemble,” she said. “As a senior, it’s sad to see what I have to leave behind, but I know that the graduating class has left this program in capable hands. I can only hope the audience can see the passion and dedication we all have for this program.”

(Photo Courtesy John Burroughs High School Drama Department)

“I have the honor of playing Atticus Finch,” explained senior Sully Zack. “He’s a man truly ahead of his time, and he often serves as the moral conscience of Maycomb County.”

“Atticus Finch is hands down one of my favorite characters, so the chance to play him has made for one incredible experience. And the fact that I’ve gotten to spend rehearsals with such a tight-knit and talented cast has only augmented that experience.”

To Kill A Mockingbird is my last JBHS drama production,” added Zack. “And while I’m sad to leave the amazing program where I have made memories, my best friends and where I have been encouraged to follow my dreams, I know that with my incredibly talented peers, and the guidance of Mr. Myers, our little program is destined for success.”

(Photo Courtesy John Burroughs High School Drama Department)

To Kill A Mockingbird has been the perfect topper to the drama cake,” said senior Maddie Seiffert. “I get to play Miss Maudie, which is challenging because not only is she motherly and older, but she’s also a warm and young spirit.”

“This has been such a fun part to play as the balance between the town creates such a loving environment but also this horrid conflict between those who believe in right or wrong.”

“Drama for the past four years has been a home to me,” Seiffert also said. “It’s a place filled with the most loving, caring, and funny people on campus! It’s been a blast for every show!”

(Photo Courtesy John Burroughs High School Drama Department)

“My character is a sad victim of abuse, poverty and racism,” commented junior Megan Mazer who portrays Mayella Ewell. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to play this role and to expand my abilities as an actress.”

“I’m extremely grateful to be performing as Scout with such a talented cast,” said freshman Jordyn Holt. “I’ve made many new friends this freshman year, and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to perform with these amazing people.”

“Each person is inspirational and I love learning from them all. Although Scout is young and naive, she is able to teach the importance of acceptance, and displays unconditional love for others. This show is incredible. I’m so proud of the whole cast’s delivery… I can’t wait for opening night!”

Tickets are $10 for students, staff and seniors and $15 general admission. They are available online here and at the box office before the show begins. Performances are at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 14.

“Harper Lee’s classic work still remains so relevant, and it has been a show I have wanted to direct for a long time,” added Myers. “Audiences are in for something special.”

Burbank Baseball Closes Deal, Beats Burroughs, 5-1

Fittingly on Senior Night, a pair of upperclassmen for the Burbank High baseball team helped push the Bulldogs to a 5-1 Pacific League triumph over visiting Burroughs on Tuesday night.

Matt Lungaro ventured seven innings and yielded six hits, while Christian Guerra delivered the go-ahead, bases-loaded, two-run single to center field during a four-run sixth inning uprising.

“This was a big moment for him,” Burbank coach Bob Hart said of Guerra. “This was Senior Night and though he hasn’t had the season he wanted, he showed what he’s capable of doing.”

Matt Lungaro, shown in a recent Pacific League game, allowed six hits in a 5-1 win over Burroughs. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

The game was notched at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when senior Henry Leake walked to open the frame.

Junior designated hitter Abiezer Delgado was safe on a fielder’s choice and Leake scurried to second base on an error.

Junior Matthew Shaugabay was hit by a pitch and up stepped Guerra, who worked the count to 3-2 and then lined a Matthew Rudas fastball that made it 3-1.

“We might not be the most talented team, but we fight hard and we scrap,” Hart said. “We don’t take anything for granted. We fight for everything.”

The third run came in on a balk and Burbank’s advantage became 5-1 on junior Max Meltzer’s sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs (14-8 and 10-3 in league) led 1-0 in the third inning when Meltzer singled to right field, and then stole second base.

The Indians had base runners, but cashed in only one run versus Burbank on Tuesday. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Sophomore Davis Mieliwocki’s base hit to center advanced Meltzer to third base and scored on senior Chris Minnick’s single.

The Indians (12-13 and 7-6 in league) evened it at 1-1 with a run in the fourth inning when junior Nathan Palafox led off with a single to left field.

Freshman Adan Perez came in as a pinch runner and junior Daniel Leonard (two singles) moved him to second base on a grounder. Perez eventually came around on an error.

“I’m proud of my guys,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said of his team who have a home game on Friday at 6 p.m. against the Bulldogs. “But you have to take your hat off to Burbank. They were the better team tonight.”

Sherwood continued: “It’s one game, but we’ll be back. That’s baseball,” he said.

Lungaro retired the side in order in the first and squirmed out of a second-inning jam.

Junior Andrew Jacob Barrera doubled down the left-field line to open the frame and took third on Leonard’s single to left.

Leonard stole second, but Lungaro then fanned junior Brandon Giraldo and junior Matthew Diaz to end the threat.

“I try and come out and just relax,” said Lungaro, who struck out seven. “I just want to hit my spots and not worry about all the stress. I felt pretty confident that we were going to win.”

The Bulldogs managed four hits, but scored five runs. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Five batters went to the plate for the Indians in the third including sophomore Niccolo Chuidian, who led off with a single to left.

Freshman Ricardo Perez was safe on an error and advanced to second base on senior Brandon Martinez’s grounder, but senior Justin Palafox flied out and Barrera fanned to close the inning.

Martinez’s one-out single in the fifth was followed by Justin Palafox striking out and Barrera grounding out.

After Leonard’s one-out single in the sixth inning, Giraldo then flied out and Diaz grounded out.

Lungaro struck out Chuidian to open the seventh, Perez bounced back to the box and Martinez lined out.

Rudas, a senior, toured five-plus innings, allowing four hits with five strikeouts and one walk and five hit batters, while junior Brandon Ortega went one inning and nicked one batter.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Burbank Was Once Wine Country

In the early days of Burbank a number of farmers found that the soil in Burbank was good for growing grapes. Many of these early Burbankers began to produce locally made wine from the grapes. At one time the Hillsides of the Verdugo’s were covered in grape arbors.

One immigrant Family from Italy, the Grangetto family, were said to have moved to America specifically to Burbank because they heard that the area was great for producing wine.

Jefferson Elementary School was once the grounds of Gai’s Winery.

Every now and then an old Burbank Wine Bottle shows up on Ebay and they make a great decoration for your home.

Mrs Angela Brusso Crushing Grapes in 1957

The last winery in Burbank was the Brusso Winery. Located on Thornton Street near the Burbank Airport was in business until around 1967. The names of some of the other Burbank wineries are Gai, McClure, Randisi, Grangetto and Brusso.

My Brother in Law was working once on the Azusa city hall remodeling project with his construction company and found several empty bottles of wine from Burbanks Gai’s winery.

Apparently the original workers were fans of Burbank wine!

J Burbank wine came in your normal size bottles and also by the gallon Jug so next time you are on Ebay or at your local swap meet or flea market keep your eyes peeled for those old bottles of Burbanks Finest!

Burroughs Softball Blanks Burbank 6-0 For Share Of Third Straight League Title

There was much riding on the outcome of Thursday night’s Pacific League softball clash between Burroughs High and Burbank at McCambridge Park.

A win by the Indians would assure them of a first-place tie with Crescenta Valley, and a victory by the Bulldogs would give them fourth place, one game ahead of Glendale and a CIF Southern Section playoff berth.

In the end, junior Presley Miraglia was simply too good and in control, striking out 11 and yielding four hits in a 6-0 complete-game shutout in the regular-season finale as the Indians secured a share of a third straight league title.

“Any time we go into a game, we feel good,” first-year Burroughs coach Wes Tanigawa said. “The way they were focused and settled down, I felt good.”

The Indians (19-8 and 12-2 in league) scurried in front 1-0 in the fourth inning against sophomore Alyssa Porras and added five more runs in the sixth.

The initial tally started when Miraglia (three singles) reached base on an error. Sophomore Citlali Mendez then came in to pinch run and moved to second base on sophomore Mia Storer’s infield hit.

Junior pitcher Presley Miraglia, shown in a recent game, allowed four hits with 11 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over the Bulldogs. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Mendez took third base on junior Jessica Amaya’s sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on junior Nikki Ricciardella’s perfect sacrifice squeeze bunt.

Burbank (12-14 and 8-6 in league) fell behind 6-0 after the five-run explosion that began with a base hit by Miraglia to left field. Once again, Mendez ran for her.

Junior hurler Allie Benson replaced Porras and faced Storer, who was safe on an error.

Pinch hitter Kaitlin Escamilla, a sophomore, drew a walk to load the bases and Ricciardella was hit by a pitch which forced in a run.

The key blow was delivered by senior Amanda Flores (two hits), who clubbed a two-run double to right center.

Porras re-entered and allowed an infield single to pinch hitter, sophomore Morgan Mersola, that scored a run and two batters later, senior Lauren Lopez added a run-scoring single to right field.

“It got away from us,” Burbank coach Mike Delaney said. “We simply made too many key mistakes.”

Miraglia worked a perfect first and fanned all three batters before allowing a one-out single in the second inning to right center by junior Erin Lashkari, who went to second base on sophomore Sarah Garelick’s sacrifice bunt.

But Miraglia then collected herself and struck out junior Macie Jensen swinging.

Miraglia then fashioned a 1-2-3 third and fourth inning, striking out freshman Katie Treadway in the third and fanning junior Anysia Gonzalez in the fourth.

“My pitching coach worked with me to get my pitches down,” Miraglia said. “I needed to fix my level of pitches. I knew what I had to do.”

Delaney admitted that Miraglia was throwing hard and also keeping the ball down, but said they were perhaps too anxious. “We didn’t decide what part of the plate to swing at,” he pointed out.

Miraglia retired Lashkari to open the fifth inning on a liner to center field and then struck out Garelick looking.

Jensen reached first on a miscue and then stole second, however, Miraglia settled down and induced junior Bene Snyder to line out to first base.

Miraglia began the sixth inning by fanning senior pinch hitter Alyssa De La Torre, but surrendered an infield single to sophomore Alex Davis.

Miraglia whiffed sophomore Amaya Broyls, but allowed a single to left by junior Melissa Daniel, only to strike out Gonzalez swinging.

Miraglia induced Lashkari to ground out to begin the seventh, but Garelick laced a single to right center.

Jensen popped up for the second out and Snyder grounded out to seal the victory.

Porras allowed seven hits and struck out two with two walks in seven innings while Benson walked a batter, hit a batter and gave up one hit.

But the Indians battled back to send the game into extra innings and ultimately won 6-5 when Andrew Jacob Barrera slid head first into first base to beat out a double play opportunity that scored Ricky Perez for the winning run.

“I’m extremely proud of my seniors, the way they stepped up tonight,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said of the nine-inning game. “The entire team played to the caliber they are capable of playing to. I think we beat a very good team tonight in Burbank and I’m very proud of all my guys.”

Burroughs (13-13, 8-6 in league) finishes the regular season in fourth place in the Pacific League standings, while Burbank (14-9, 10-4) finished third after Arcadia upset previously unbeaten Crescenta Valley to take second.

Burbank was clearly the better team the first half of the game. The Bulldogs scored twice in the second inning, paced by a run-scoring single from Max Meltzer. Burbank added two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead thanks to Burroughs as one run scored via a bases loaded walk and another from a hit batter with the bases loaded.

Burbank starting pitcher Henry Leake allowed just one runner to reach base in the first three innings.  But Burroughs was hoping he would get tired. He left after the sixth inning, having thrown 105 pitches.

In the fourth inning, Burroughs took advantage of a Burbank error. Nathan Palafox singled home Justin Palafox and Angel Estrada had a two-run single to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 4-3.

Burbank increased its lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning when Javier Reyes singled home Matthew Shaugabay.

Burroughs tied things up in the sixth inning thanks to a pair of Burbank errors that scored Justin Palafox and Barrera.

Burbank coach Bob Hart assessed his team.

“We didn’t come up with some timely hits early in that game,” Hart said. “We left far too many runners on base. When you do that you leave the door open. When you leave the door open they are capable of coming back and they did a good job.”

Both teams are expected to play in the postseason and will find out their fate Monday when the CIF Southern Section releases the baseball playoff pairings.

In celebration of Clean Air Month, the Burbank Transportation Management Organization (BTMO) will support three bike pit stops throughout the City of Burbank, during its annual “Bike & Walk to Work Day” on Thursday, May 18, 2017.

Embracing the theme, “Bike. Walk. Breathe!” to promote healthy living, clean air, and getting people out of their cars to get to work, the BTMO is sponsoring bike pit stops, from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, located at:

1) Downtown Burbank Metrolink Station on Front Street

2) Downtown Burbank at Orange Grove and Third

3) The Pointe at 2900 W Alameda Avenue

At The Pointe, there will be giveaways, healthy bites, and activities offered by featured partners, including Walk Bike Burbank, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Burbank Community YMCA, American Lung Association, Metro, Burbank Police Department, Burbank Bike Angels, Sycle Club, MyBurbank.com, Velofix, and The Burbank Studios Café. There will also be an opportunity drawing to win several great prizes, including a Dahon Mariner folding commuter bicycle (donated by Dahon). Other prizes include a Fitbit Charge 2 Activity Tracker, gift cards and much more!

Additionally, at the pit stop, walkers and bikers can demonstrate their commitment to Clean Air Month and biking or walking to work by taking a selfie with a BTMO frame for a chance to win a Fitbit Charge 2 Activity Tracker. To be eligible, participants will need to “follow” the BTMO Instagram page, take a selfie or picture and post it with the hashtags #BurbankTMO and #BikeWalkBreathe. The winner will be selected at random from all qualifying posts. The two other Downtown Burbank pit stops will also feature giveaways.

“As Clean Air Month is promoted throughout the country, here in Burbank, we want to use this event to thank the bikers and walkers for doing their part to clean the air and contribute to a healthy lifestyle,” said Adam Gilbert, BTMO Clean Air Month Committee Co-chair and Director, Corporate Real Estate, The Walt Disney Company. We hope people will continue to see the benefits of getting out of their car and walking and biking to work throughout the year.”

The BTMO is a private-sector nonprofit organization formed to bring together employers, building owners, and other stakeholders to collectively establish policies, programs, and services which address local transportation and air quality issues and concerns.

The BTMO was formed to help reduce congestion, promote clean air, and solve mobility problems by providing services directly to its members and their employees to reduce dependency on single-occupancy automobile travel and encouraging the use of public transit, carpooling, vanpooling, walking, and biking to work. It also integrates private sector involvement into the public sector transportation planning and implementation.

Burbank Police Officers responded to call of a possible DUI driver near Hollywood Way and Verdugo.  The officers found the car in the CVS lot and saw a male enter the driver’s seat and drive away.

The officers followed the vehicle and watched it commit several vehicle code violations.  They attempted to stop the car, but the driver continued driving.  Police officers followed the vehicle into the Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys and North Hollywood, where it collided with a parked and unoccupied truck.

Following this collision, the driver continued driving, failing to yield for the police officers who were still following.

Eventually, the driver returned to the city of Burbank and pulled into the Costco parking lot.    The driver was finally detained after running over a curb and he was placed under arrest for felony evading, driving under the influence and hit and run.

The suspect has been identified as Timothy O’Brien, a 44-year-old man from North Hollywood.  O’Brien  is currently out on bond and due in court June 5, 2017.
