The Burbank Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect responsible for a bank robbery at U.S. Bank in Burbank as well as a bank robbery at Wells Fargo in South Pasadena.

Photo supplied by the Burbank Police Department

On May 15, 2017, at about 4:20 P.M., a man entered the U.S. Bank branch located at 1750 West Olive Avenue. He approached a bank teller and passed a note demanding cash, threatening to harm people inside the bank if his demands were not met. Fearing for his safety and the safety of others, the bank teller provided the suspect with the money. The suspect then exited the bank on foot and possibly entered a Ford Flex parked nearby.

About 45 minutes later, the same suspect committed a bank robbery in the city of South Pasadena (1000 Fair Oaks Avenue). He again produced a demand note to a Wells Fargo teller and stole money from the bank.

The suspect is described as a male, possibly of Armenian descent. He’s about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing roughly 200 pounds. The suspect was wearing a gray baseball hat with a white stripe along the brim and aviator-style sunglasses. At the time these crimes were committed, the suspect had facial hair. The Ford Flex, which is believed to be the suspect’s vehicle, is black in color with a silver top. It also has a moon roof and aluminum paneling on the tailgate.

At this time, the total monetary loss is not being disclosed.

Anyone with information about these robberies, or information that might lead to the identity of this suspect is asked to call the Burbank Police Department Detective Bureau, at 818-238-3210. If you wish to remain anonymous, call “LA Crime Stoppers” by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), use your smartphone by downloading the “P3 MOBILE APP,” or by using the website www.LACrimeStoppers.org.

Burroughs Softball Closes Season With 7-1 Loss To Oaks Christian

Making the jump to the CIF Southern Section Division I was going to take a leap of faith for the Burroughs High softball team.

When the Indians settled in versus Oaks Christian in an opening-round playoff game Thursday afternoon at Olive Park, an early deficit to the powerful Lions became even bigger and eventually proved insurmountable in a 7-1 loss.

Burroughs (19-9 and 12-2 for a share of first place in the Pacific League) collected just five singles off sophomore Lexi Berg, who worked seven innings while striking out four and walking two.

“Last year we didn’t have to start at the top,” said Burroughs coach Wes Tanigawa of the tough draw. “The girls jumped in with both feet and had to play a really good team in the first round.”

Trailing 7-0 heading into the seventh inning, the Indians, who were in Division II last season, sent seven batters to the plate and cut the Lions’ lead to six runs.

With one out, sophomore Mia Storer, who singled with two out in the fourth inning and was left stranded when junior Jessica Amaya (two hits) grounded out, walked and moved to second base on Amaya’s single to center field.

Freshman Chloe Bookmyer entered as a pinch hitter and was safe on a fielder’s choice as Storer advanced to third base and came around on an error.

Junior Nikki Ricciardella also singled in the seventh, but sophomore Kaitlin Escamilla and sophomore Morgan Mersola both struck out.

Brianna Johnson played her final game for the Indians and was disappointed at how the season ended.

“In our league, we don’t face that type of pitcher,” said the senior third baseman of the hard-tossing Berg. “They’re a good team and they know how to play.”

Neither team scored in the first two innings until sophomore Maya Brady, whose uncle is five-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady, blooped an opposite-field single to left off junior Presley Miraglia.

Miraglia yielded 11 hits including four for extra bases, fanning four and walking one across seven innings.

Junior Kaitlin Simonsgaard was safe on a fielder’s choice as Brady took second base and advanced to third base and eventually scored on a throwing error.

Simonsgaard also eased into second base on the miscue and then crossed the plate on sophomore Taylor Johnson’s grounder.

Oaks Christian’s lead ballooned to 5-0 after a three-run fourth when freshman Felicia Quezeda (two hits) lined a bullet into left center that turned into a homer.

Junior Olivia Lucchese sliced a single to right field and moved to second base on a one-out sacrifice by sophomore Brooke Snyder.

Brady’s single to left center plated Lucchese and after Brady stole second base, Simonsgaard’s triple to left field scored her.

Two innings later, the lead swelled to 7-0 as the Lions (26-5-1 and 11-4 for a second place tie in the Marmonte League) sent six hitters to the plate and scored two runs.

Simonsgaard had a run-scoring triple to right field that scored sophomore Emily Justman, who came in as a pinch runner for Berg, who led off the frame with a double to right center.

Senior Kayla Ketring (two hits then added a run-producing single that brought home Simonsgaard.

Oaks Christian Coach Peter Ackermann wants his team to be aggressive at the plate.

“I tell them to get a pitch you can hit and swing away,” he said. “I don’t give them too many take signs.”

Berg retired the side in order in the first and sixth inning, but allowed a two-out single to right by Miraglia in the fourth inning, but Storer then bounced out.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Burbank’s Own Song

Way back in the 1920’s Burbank and the Chamber of Commerce decided the City needed its own theme song.

Yes that is right! Our own song!

Have you ever sung or heard it played? Most likely not, but it is a fun toe tapper and enjoyable.

The song was written by a man named Code Morgan for the Chamber of Commerce to promote Burbank and its businesses. Once you hear it, it gets stuck in your head and at the oddest times you will find yourself humming it or singing the lyrics to yourself.

It is a fun song even if it is not Grammy material!

The sheet music was printed up like a large advertisement for local businesses and people bought ads to highlight their company. The title “In Burbank” indicates that it will clue you in on the virtues of living here “Neath the mountain Crest”!

If you are truly interested in hearing a performance of this home town song I will be giving a slide presentation this Saturday afternoon at the Burbank Historical Society Gordon Howard Museum at Olive Rec at 2 pm.

One of the highlights will be a performance of “In Burbank” followed by a sing along of this piece of wonderful Burbank history.

Join us for a fun time discussing our Book “Lost Burbank” by Wes Clark and myself. You will also receive a souvenir copy of the sheet music you see below.

Soon you will be singing and tapping your foot to this old time Burbank song!

Burbank Public Library Apollo 8 Program Features Author Talk

Author Jeffrey Kluger discusses his new book Apollo 8:  The Thrilling Story of the First Mission to the Moon with space historian Amy Teitel at the Buena Vista Branch of the Burbank Public Library on Wednesday, May 24, at 7:00 p.m.

“As the years have gone by, and as the history of man in space has been recalled, Apollo 8 is coming to be recognized as a defining moment for man in space,” commented Librarian Hubert Kozak, who put together the program for the Burbank Public Library.

“It was the first time humans left the orbit of earth and ventured into deep space, the first time men left the gravitational pull of the earth and found themselves pulled by the gravity of another celestial body. It was the first time humans saw with their own eyes the other side of the moon.”

The astronauts on the mission, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders, put the Apollo 8 Command Service Module into orbit around the moon and studied and took photographs of the surface for potential landing sites for a future mission.

A photo taken by Anders from the other side of the moon, Earthrise,” became one of the iconic photos of the 20th century.

“Apollo 8 was an improvised mission, one that was moved up in NASA’s schedule of Apollo flights in its quest to land a man on the moon,” added Kozak. “Kluger explains how this was prompted by the space race with the Russians, a part of the U.S. Russian rivalry in the Cold War.”

“The mission was riskier and more daring than we knew at the time. When the Apollo 8 mission to the moon was planned, no crew had flown in the Apollo space capsule. The year before, three astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, had been killed in a fire in the Apollo capsule during ground tests.”

“The Saturn V rocket that would lift the astronauts into space had never put men into space before, and its last unmanned test had been unsatisfactory and engineering adjustments had to be made.”

Kluger interviewed Borman, Lovell and Anders, along with their families, for the book and tells a story that is dramatic, occasionally dark and often humorous.

“This is an inspirational story,” Kozak also said. “The Apollo 8 mission came at another time of deep division in our country, at the close of 1968, a very troubled year in our history with the war in Vietnam, deep racial divisions and widespread political unrest and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy.”

“And yet on Christmas eve in late December, the nation was focused on a national triumph, and the largest worldwide audience in television history tuned in to watch men talk to them from the moon and recite the moving opening passages from the Book of Genesis.”

The Apollo 8 program is the first in the Summer Reading Club series for adults, but everyone is welcome to attend the free event. Books will be available for purchase and Kluger will sign books for interested patrons.

A senior writer at Time magazine, Kluger also co-wrote Lost Moon with astronaut Lovell, which Ron Howard made into the film Apollo 13, about man’s first landing on the moon.

Indoor cycling classes are a popular cardio workout for all ages, abilities and weather conditions. EvolvCycle in Studio City is one of the very best indoor cycling studios in all of Los Angeles.

High ceilings and a minimalist, updated decor make EvolvCycle both chill and stylish. Amenities include showers and bathrooms for men and women, body care products, hairdryers, free towels, free shoe rentals and lockable cubbies.

But it is EvolvCycle’s teachers who really put the studio on top. Great energy, great music and positivite attitudes combine for an fast and energetic 45-minute workout.

Also known as spinning, indoor cycling is often recommended as a cardio workout for people whose bodies can’t tolerate impact exercise, as well as for typical, healthy people looking for a great workout.

The bikes at EvolvCycle, while not Keisers (my favorite), are the respectable Schwinn Carbon Blue. They are adjustable for height and arm and leg length, along with resistance, for perfect comfort. Monitors on each bike tell the rider how fast they are going, how far, approximately the number of calories burned and more.

I’ve tried spin classes all over Burbank and Los Angeles, and my favorite for vibe, flexibility and number of classes and easy access is EvolvCycle. They have so many classes to choose from throughout the day, every day.

After each ride, chilled eucalyptus oil scented towels await hot and sweaty riders for a pleasant and refreshing way to cool off.

The indoor cycling studio also offers some of the best packages around. Any client, new or regular, can take advantage of a one-time special one-month unlimited package for $49. Typical one-month unlimited packages run $149 at the studio.

EvolvCycle is located at 12038 Ventura Blvd., Suite B, Studio City, CA 91604, in the Trader Joe’s and Du-par’s shopping center. Parking is free for 90 minutes in the lot. For more information on EvolvCycle, visit their website.

Editor’s Note: While there’s always a lot going on in Burbank, myBurbank’s “Get Out Of Town!” highlights some of our favorite activities and events outside the town borders.

Enjoy Burger Month With One Of Black Angus’ Six New Burgers

May is National Hamburger Month and Black Angus Steakhouse has six Bad @ss Burgers for you to try out. Each one is yummier than one the before. I know this because I tried all of them last week and I can still taste how mouthwatering they are.

The first burger is the BBQ Bacon. It is served with a tangy BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, onion rings Applewood-smoked bacon, coleslaw and butter pickles that are brined in-house like all the ingredients but the bread. While this type of burger is served at many restaurants, the way it is prepared here is unlike any other BBQ Bacon burger you have had before. It goes great with their crispy not greasy onion rings. All burgers come with a side, so pick the one that you want.

Next up is another popular hamburger and it’s a Patty Melt. The rye bread is NY style and is not at all greasy like how it can be prepared at so many other places. That is one my biggest complaints about this type of melt. Plus, the Swiss and American Cheese help to make this sandwich go down smoothly. You can feel the cheese coat your mouth as you swallow every bite. You don’t have to be named Patty to like this burger.

And you don’t have to be named Reuben to enjoy the Pastrami Reuben. This is served like a melt on rye bread with pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing. It is two sandwiches for the price of one and I never knew they were a match made in heaven until I tasted it. The pastrami tastes like it comes from the best deli you have ever been to. You will never eat want to have a burger without a Reuben and you will not want a Reuben without a burger.

We have all heard of a Buffalo and Bleu chicken sandwich, but have you ever tried with a burger instead? I love everything Buffalo sauce related and never tried it with a burger until now. This actually works better because unlike chicken the beef soaks up the hot sauce. The Buffalo sauce is spicy but not enough to make you run for the border.

Which leads us to the SOB burger. The SOB stands for South of the Border and it will make you mouth go to cloud 9. Between the buns is a lime-cilantro mayo, pickled jalapenos, Jack cheese, crispy breaded jalapeno, and jalapeno-cilantro slaw. This one is hot, hot, hot and not because there are three different types of jalapenos on it. This one has a nice kick to it and it goes great with one of their beers. Especially the way the crispy breaded jalapeno is so soft, it is like butter. Just like this hamburger!

(Courtesy of Black Angus Steakhouse)

I saved the best for last and that is the Al Pastor. This is a chili rubbed burger, chipotle mayo, pickled jalapenos, Pepper jack cheese, ham, bacon, pineapple jam, chopped onions and cilantro. I never knew there could be a burger that screamed summer, but this one does just that. It feels like a luau in you mouth and it will make you want to do a hula dance when you are done eating it. It is fresh, scrumptious and so good you will want to go back every day for it while supplies last.

That is because these burgers are only available for a limited time. Run, don’t walk to Black Angus Steakhouse at 235 South Ikea Way to try them all.

Burbank Baseball Falls Just Short In CIF Second Round, 6-5

If there is one trait that exemplifies the Burbank High baseball team, it’s never give up.

On Tuesday in a CIF Southern Section Division IV second-round playoff match against visiting Capistrano Valley Christian, the Bulldogs needed every bit of this philosophy.

Senior Henry Leake came in relief and went four innings with seven strikeouts, eight hits and one walk in a 6-5 CIF second-round loss to Capistrano Valley Christian. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Never ahead and despite falling behind by three runs heading into the sixth inning, they loaded the bases with none out in the seventh inning and scored two runs, but ultimately fell just short 6-5.

In that final frame, Burbank (15-10), which made its deepest playoff run in several decades, trailed 6-3, but this was hardly a deterrent as senior Chris Minnick (two hits) led off with a single to left field and advanced to second base on senior Henry Leake’s liner into left.

Junior Matthew Shaugabay also found a hole in left field on a bad-hop single that made it 6-4.

Senior Branden Phillips then drew a base on balls as did junior Abiezer Delgado which plated Leake.

“We were hoping for the timely hit, but it was still nip-and-tuck,” Burbank coach Bob Hart said of the close game. “There are hits and then there are timely hits.”

Christian Guerra catches a pick-off toss against the Eagles during Tuesday’s CIF playoff game. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

The contest turned when senior Christian Guerra bounced a ball to the pitcher, senior Andre Antone, who threw home for the force out and then gunned down Guerra at first base for the double play.

When junior Max Meltzer lined out to right field with the tying run at third base and the winning run at second, the Bulldogs’ hugely successful season came to an end.

“We had some opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize on them,” Hart noted. “I’m proud of my guys. They showed heart and character.”

Capistrano Valley Christian Coach Clemente Bonilla was relieved afterward.

“I put him [Antone] in a really tough spot,” he said. “He’s our ace, but we had to shut his arm down in January because of tendinitis. But he convinced me that he was mentally ready to throw the ball.”

Antone, who has committed to UC Irvine, earned the save after working one frame and allowing three hits with two walks.

Catcher Matthew Shaugabay readies to make the tag at home plate. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Junior Alec Arnone was the starter and surrendered five hits with five strikeouts and three walks across five innings.

The Eagles (22-8) are a powerful hitting lineup with plenty of sock in their bats.

On the afternoon, Capistrano Valley Christian collected 13 hits off three Burbank pitchers.

The Bulldogs, who placed third in the Pacific League at 10-4, trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning when senior Jonathan Castaneda lined a two-out single to right field that scored Guerra, who drew a two-out walk.

The Eagles, who finished in first place in the San Joaquin League at 11-1, pounced early and took a 1-0 lead in the second when Arnone (three hits) scored after getting a leadoff single to right center.

Capistrano Valley Christian’s cushion became 2-0 in the fifth inning when Antone lined a one-out homer over the fence in left field off Leake, who came into the fray with none out in the third inning, relieving senior Colby Vosgien, who went two-plus frames, walking two and allowing four hits.

“Burbank High is the best team I’ve been a part of,” said Leake, who had two hits and will study at Babson College in Massachusetts, and walk-on for the baseball team. “I know everyone says this, but everyone loves each other.”

Leake, who toured four innings and yielded eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk over four innings, felt the team would rally.

“If that [Guerra’s double play] ball goes anywhere else, it’s only one out and we still have a chance,” he said. “But that’s baseball.”

Burbank evened it at 2-2 in the fifth when it sent six batters to the plate that included a leadoff single by Meltzer, a base hit to left from Castaneda, a run-scoring double to right center by sophomore Davis Mieliwocki and Leak’s sacrifice fly.

The Eagles seemingly iced it when they scored three runs in the sixth inning as senior Zack Mendez delivered a key one-out, two-run single that glanced off Leake’s glove into center field as sophomore Robert Wood, who singled to right center and junior Carson Matthews, who singled to left field, both crossed the plate. Mendez scored the last run via an error.

In the seventh, the Eagles tacked on an insurance run when Matthews sliced a double to left field that scored junior Nick Casarietti, who reached on a miscue.

The Bulldogs advanced to the second-round after routing host Lancaster 10-5  on Friday as senior pitcher Matt Lungaro, who will attend the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, tossed a four-hitter with one run over five innings, while sophomore Joseph Clark, who went one inning with one strikeout, one walk and one hit allowed on Tuesday, worked two innings with one run given up and two hits.

Burbank stole a season-best 11 bases and saw Castaneda collect two hits and three runs batted in, Minnick contribute two hits with a walk and Leake smack a two-run double and add a spectacular throw to home plate for the third out.

David Starr Jordan Middle School unveiled the mural History of Burbank, a collaboration between Jordan students and professional artist Henry Goods, on Monday, May 22. The expansive mural covers the entire back wall of the Cougar gymnasium and depicts scenes amd images recalling Burbank’s history.

Funded in part with a grant from the Burbank Arts For All Foundation, with donations of paint from two Burbank businesses – Catalina Paints and Bisordi Paint Company, the History of Burbank mural took shape under the leadership of parent Anne Askerneese and Assistant Principal April Weaver.

To begin the project, all 325 sixth-grade students researched the history of Burbank in their Social Studies classes.

Elaine Rosenberg from the Burbank Historical Society then visited Tamara Fiola’s Advanced Art class to talk about Burbank’s history. The Advanced Art students, in grades 6-8, then sketched out images to include in the mural. The students worked with Goods, painting the mural over a period of several days.

The mural includes scenes of farming, Dr. David Burbank, the Burbank canning industry, Moreland Trucking Co., Heavy Weight Champion boxer James Jefferies who raised prize winning cattle and whose historic farm was later moved to Knotts Berry Farm, the pumpkin-shaped hardware store, Lockheed, film/motion picture studios, Bob’s Big Boy, the Equestrian Center, the Airport, the Metro, Starlight Bowl and more, explained Askerneese.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

“Although the mural depicts the wonderful History of Burbank, it is the students who worked on this project that represent our future,” commented Weaver. “They were hardworking and dedicated.”

“We are very proud to share this piece of art with the community, and would love to work with BAFA again to incorporate more art experiences  into our classrooms.”

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

“Mr. Goods, Ms. Askernese and Ms. Fiola did an excellent job guiding the students through the process to create a student-centered learning experience,” Weaver added. “The students will remember this project  for the rest of their lives.”

“This is the first mural at Jordan school that has been a collaboration between students and a professional muralist,” said Askerneese, who has assisted on other mural projects at other Burbank Unified school. “The mural has generated excitement on campus. It has inspired students to start new conversations about the history of our city.”

“The mural not only brightens our campus, but it reminds students that they are part of a unique community whose influence and achievements are felt across generations and across the world.”

Bike, Walk, Breathe!

Each year in May, the Burbank Transportation Management Organization (BTMO) partners with the business community to celebrate Clean Air Month.

This year, on Thursday, May 18th, to celebrate Bike and Walk to Work Day, the BTMO hosted three Pit Stops around town where attendees could learn about healthy living and healthy environments in a fun setting.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Joining forces with community groups including Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, Burbank Community YMCA, Burbank Police Department, Burbank Bike Angels, Walk Bike Burbank, LA Metro, American Lung Association, Velofix, The Burbank Studios Café and Sunrise Tortilla, the morning event was filled with music, prizes, giveaways and educational information for all in attendance.

BTMO Board of Director and Event Committee Chair, Adam Gilbert of The Walt Disney Company said, “The goal of bike and walk to work week is to motivate employees and residents in Burbank to leave their car at home and ride or walk to work; cleaning the air and relieving traffic congestion in the process.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

The BTMO and its member companies want people to know there are alternatives to the single-occupancy vehicle in promoting transit and vanpools.  Thursday’s events hopefully spark interest in biking and walking to work while rewarding those that already do.”

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Remembering Burbank’s Sacrifice for Our Country

Since World War One Burbank Citizens have heeded the call of our country in times of war.

We as a community have suffered loses of our young men and women in the service to keep us free from tyranny and oppression and to help free others from that oppression also.

This has come at a steep cost and many a Burbank home has known the pain of losing a loved one. The names of those who gave all are forever inscribed on the Memorial at Mc Cambridge Park that is marked by the eternal flame of remembrance.

Each Memorial Day the names of those who were lost are read aloud and a Red Rose placed on their monument to assure that their names ring out in our city once again so their sacrifice is not forgotten.

In other cities in far off countries our city’s sons are also remembered each year on the day their town was liberated.

In Mont-Dol France Burbank’s Quentin Sandahl is remembered on this Monument by the placing of flowers by the local towns people.

Another such monument is in the Netherlands to Burbank’s  Warren F. Neilson by placing a wreath on the center of a propeller from his plane by the local towns people who made the propeller a central part of the monument.

Our Burbank lost sons are remembered in many other places across the globe too numerous to mention here.

Let us however this memorial day locally pause and remember those whose days were cut short so ours would be long and free of oppression from evil.

If you are local please come to the Mc Cambridge Memorial at 11 am Monday to take a few moments out of your long weekend to honor those from our great town who gave so much for freedom. It is a small way to remember their sacrifice that their names will be in your memories as we celebrate them this weekend.

For a more in-depth look at each person you may read about them and see many of their photos here…

Walk Bike Burbank Presents “ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR” Award

$

Burbank resident and daily bike rider, Susan Yamamoto was recently awarded “Burbank Bike Advocate of the Year” by Walk Bike Burbank, local chapter of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.

Susan was recognized for her successful efforts improving local bike parking at several new Burbank businesses.  In appreciation, Susan was also presented with individual gift certificates from each of the several new Burbank stores that have recently implemented Susan’s bike parking suggestions –Walmart, Grocery Outlet and IKEA.

When the new Walmart opened last year in Burbank without any designated bike parking, Susan met directly with their local management to discuss potential bike parking solutions with them.  After several meetings, Susan’s persistence paid off when Walmart agreed with her and installed a new bike parking rack next to the front entrance.

As Burbank’s newest grocery store, Grocery Outlet, with its bicycle-convenient central location was opening last year, someone forgot to replace the bike parking racks previously removed by the departing tenant.  During the store’s Grand Opening, Susan was able to persuade both regional and local store managers of the need for bike parking.  Her tenacity paid-off when new and accommodating bike parking was installed near the front door.

Who on earth rides a bicycle to the largest IKEA in North America?  It turns out plenty of customers and employees for sure use their bicycles for transportation to and from there.  IKEA now even offers their own brand of bicycle and bike commuter gear.  But while IKEA themselves have a corporate commitment to support bicycle commuting and travel, the new store’s actual bike parking was inconveniently located quite a distance from the store’s main entrance.

When IKEA opened in its new location in Burbank, Susan met with the local store managers and convinced them that that additional bike parking, located nearer the front entrance, would attract bike riding customers.  IKEA agreed and installed additional racks by the front door, which now seem to nearly always contain customer’s bikes.

Anyone who rides a bicycle in Burbank while doing normal everyday errands quickly realizes the need for better, safer bike parking facilities at many local stores and shopping areas.  Better bicycle amenities encourage customers to consider active transportation options.

Thanks to Susan Yamamoto and her tireless local advocacy for better bike parking.  Because of local bike advocates like Susan, Burbank is becoming a safer and nicer place every day for using a bicycle as regular practical transportation.

Walk Bike Burbank is the local chapter of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.  For more information on Walk Bike Burbank, visit their website at walkbikeburbank.org or email the steering committee atwalkbikeburbank@gmail.com.

Burroughs’ Valles Advances to State Meet

Burroughs High junior pole vaulter Christian Valles was hoping for better Friday in the CIF Southern Section Master’s Meet at Arcadia High.

He didn’t get that. But what he did get was another chance.

Valles cleared his personal best of 15 feet for the third time this season, which was enough to get him to the California State Championships next week.

He was one of seven CIF Southern Section pole vaulters to advance and one of just two juniors.

“Hopefully I have two more meets with state prelims and state finals,” Valles said.

Christian Valles of Burroughs cleared 15-0 to advance to the California State Meet.

Valles said he liked the atmosphere for the event.

“They were perfect conditions. You couldn’t ask for a constant tailwind. It was pretty awesome,” he said.

He opened the competition at 14-0 and easily cleared it on his first attempt. He then cleared 14-6 on his first attempt, before clearing 15-0 on his third and final attempt.

He missed on all three chances at 15-6.

“My step was off and the third attempt it starts to get to you when you run a little faster, so your step gets messed up,” Valles said of going after 15-6.

The event was won by Tate Curran of Redondo Union, who cleared 17-0. Ironically, Valles has been working with Curran’s father, Anthony, the UCLA pole vault coach.

From the girls’ soccer team, Mireya Gonzalez and Alondra Solis will both move on to Alcorn State University.  Golfer Maddie Riggs, who also played soccer, will bring her clubs to UC Irvine.

Also from the girls’ golf team, Ashley Phelps will play at Cal State Northridge and Raelinn Arnold will play at Buena Vista University.

Burbank High moved their graduation down from the Starlight Bowl to Burbank High to celebrate the 2017 graduation class.  The move resulted in a savings of $25,000 to the school plus free parking for parents at the old IKEA site.  And that walk up the hill was also avoided!

myburbank’s Chief Photographer Ross A. Benson, along with Edward Tovmassian and Brandon Buckley were on hand to capture some pictures from the graduation.

A Burbank Police Patrol unit on routine patrol near the Empire Center Monday afternoon notice a male standing on a ledge about 25 feet high in the construction area where the new Empire under-crossing will be eventually be.

The patrol unit was not sure if the male, dressed in black, was marking graffiti or stuck or even looking to jump off the 18 inch ledge.

All vehicles on Victory Place were stopped in both directions in the area of the Empire Center, causing traffic to get backed while cars were detoured around the new interchange.

It took over 24 Firefighters to get the huge rescue cushion into place while Burbank Police assisted and had two of their crises negotiators attempt to talk to the male down.

The Burbank Police Officers were successful in convincing the gentleman to walk back to where he walked on the ledge and they took him into protective custody.
