The Burbank High boys’ swim team found out very quickly Tuesday afternoon never to take things lightly when the Bulldogs visited rival Burroughs.

Feeling it would easily win the opening event, the 200 medley relay, Burbank narrowly got past Burroughs.

“It really got close in the end,” Burbank’s Justin Miller said. “When it close we knew we needed to push it.”

Burbank won the boys’ varsity competition 98-71. Burroughs took the girls’ competition 98-68.

Burbank got a pair of wins from Roman Rostomyan in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Miller won the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Burbank’s girls’ team was led by Michelle Morlock, who won the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Burroughs boys’ team was led by Reign Abaoag, who won the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke.

Maya Wilson led Burroughs’ girls’ team. She won the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

“It was a great meet. The energy was high,” Burroughs coach Jacob Cook said. “Everyone was shaking hands before and after the races. It is a friendly rivalry.”

Burbank Council PTA recognized 55 members of the Burbank community with Honorary Service Awards on Tuesday, April 19, at the organization’s 67th annual gala event honoring some of Burbank Unified School District’s most dedicated volunteers.

The Burbank Council PTA also honored its outgoing President, Amy Kamm, with a Continuing Service Award, and John Costanzo, BUSD Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator, with an Outstanding Administrators Award.

Parent volunteers, outstanding teachers and administrators from BUSD’s 11 elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools were nominated by each school’s PTA organization for the Honorary Service Awards.

“We were happy to honor some of the finest people for their efforts in our schools and in our community and give them some well-deserved recognition and a fun evening out,” commented Burbank Council PTA Honorary Service Awards Chairman Pam Paterra,

All recipients were presented with Certificates of Recognition from the office of Senator Anthony Portantino. Cub Scout Pack 50 performed the flag ceremony.

The John Muir Middle School Instrumental Music Association’s Chamber String Ensemble, the John Burroughs High School IMA Jazz Combo and the Burbank High School Vocal Music Association’s mixed vocal a capella group, Burbank Voices, entertained the attendees.

Board of Education members Larry Applebaum, Dr. Roberta Reynolds, Char Tabet and school board member-elect, Steve Frintner, were on hand to recognized the honorees.

Burbank Unified School District Superintendent Matt Hill, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Dr. Tom Kissinger, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Assessment Sharon Cuseo, Director of Secondary Education Dr. John Paramo, Director of Elementary Education Dr. Peter Knapik, Director of Safety and Student Services Dr. Brian O’Rourke, Director of Human Resources Anita Schackmann and Peggy Flynn, Arts & CTE Coordinator, were also in attendance.

Mental toughness isn’t easy to quantify, but it’s an important ingredient when it comes to winning.

On Tuesday night, the Burroughs High boys’ volleyball squad was clearly tested and countered that with skill and mental sturdiness, capturing the last two games and disposing of host Crescenta Valley, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, in a Pacific League showdown.

For now, the Indians, who own a 51-match league winning streak and a potential eighth straight banner, can win the title with a victory over Hoover on Thursday.

“We maintained our poise,” Burroughs coach Joel Brinton said. “The first time we met this season, some weird things happened. But tonight we won the side-out battle and our passing was really good.”

The score of the initial meeting between these two powerhouses was 25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 25-12, 15-12.

Four players had double-digit kills and was led by Burroughs senior outside hitter Conner Ludlum with a match-best 20, followed by senior middle blocker Jarrett Malone with 15.

Junior middle blocker Cole Kaitz tossed in 12 winners and three blocks, junior outside hitter Diego Rosal contributed 11 kills, junior setter Jose Levi Benitez had 56 assists and senior libero Skyler Bercini finished with 16 digs.

“I know that this is a different team, but I’m really proud of these guys,” Brinton said. “They’ve really put in the work since August and it’s paying off.”

The match-clincher was knotted at 2-2, but the Indians (12-8 and 8-0 in league) then pulled ahead 7-3 on Malone’s winner.

Burroughs eased in front 13-9 on Rosal’s block and it became 17-12 on another Malone smash.

The Falcons (17-4-1 and 6-2 in league) then came within 19-18 on a dagger from senior middle hitter Brett Dunkin and led 22-21 when Malone’s attempt found the net.

Remaining calm and cool, the Indians then cruised ahead 23-22 on Malone’s dagger and closed the set with a 2-1 spurt including Kaitz’s kill for the win.

In the third game, Burroughs controlled the early action and forged an 8-2 advantage on a kill from Malone and led 10-6 on Ludlum’s rocket.

In fact, at this point, Ludlum tallied four consecutive winners that made it 13-6 and when Malone contributed a kill it became 14-6.

At tapper from Ludlum pushed the advantage to 21-12 and it swelled to 24-16 on Rosal’s winner.

The early portion of the first game saw Burroughs lead 5-2 on Malone’s kill and 12-7 and 19-12 on Ludlum winners.

Malone’s ace made it 22-13 and later 24-16 on Ludlum’s smash. Rosal’s stuff gave the Indians the set.

The second game was deadlocked at 5-5 on Ludlum’s kill, but the Falcons moved in front 13-9 on Dunkin’s ace.

Crescenta Valley continued to play well and led 17-13 on junior outside hitter Garo Barsemian’s service ace.

Dunkin’s winner made it 21-16, however, the Indians outscored the Falcons 7-2 and evened it at 23-23.

Crescenta Valley then scored the final two points on a kill and a block from senior middle hitter Anders Johnson (nine kills).

The Falcons were paced by Jonathan Lee’s 11 kills while senior outside hitter Ben Allen added 10 and senior setter Gene Kim finished with 35 assists.

Listen To Your Mother: Burbank returns for one night only on Tuesday, May 2, at The Colony Theatre. The show highlights local voices with a 90-minute long performance of touching and humorous stories of motherhood.

The cast of both seasoned professionals and new writers includes recently retired Burbank Community Development Director Ruth Davidson-Guerra, Burbank Mayor’s Youth Task Force member and Leadership Burbank Alum Roe Leone, John Burrroughs High School junior Marlena Skrabak, Moth GrandSlam champion and Burbank environmental activist Vicki Juditz and JBHS parents Jules Ford, Joanna Peresie and Analucia Prather.

“Giving voice to these funny, touching and powerful stories is an absolute honor and Taia (Perry) and I have been delighted to be part of the Listen To Your Mother National storytelling project for the last two years,” commented Burbanker Suzanne Weerts, who produces and directs the show.

“We’re proud to be partnering with Family Service Agency and to bring awareness to their services and the importance of changing life stories by seeking help when needed.”

Including donations and ticket sales, Listen To Your Mother: Burbank raised approximately $3000 for the Family Service Agency last year.

“Though I acted all through high school and did theater and improv comedy in college, I set aside the notion of performing when I became a mother,” said first-time performer Ford. “As a full-time mom of three boys, there just wasn’t enough time.”

“Now that my kids are older and less needy, I decided to take a tentative step back onto the stage by auditioning for LTYM, a place where it’s possible to combine the foibles of mothering with the fun of performance,” she added. “I’m thrilled to be included with the inspiring, funny and touching women in this show. It’s an amazing night of storytelling benefiting an incredibly important cause.”

While Peresie, who performed in both last year’s show and this year’s, has been writing her entire life, she never shared one of her stories out loud until she auditioned for Listen to Your Mother in 2016.

“It was such an amazing experience, meeting all of these incredible writers, laughing and crying with them and working our way through our collective stage fright, that I couldn’t wait to audition again,” said Peresie. “I’m glad I did”

“We have such a talented group of storytellers in our 2017 show. I’m honored to take the stage with them, and I can’t wait for our community to hear their powerful, hilarious, sometimes painful, always beautiful words.”

“Witnessing the process our storytellers go through to bring their pieces to the stage and the personal evolution and empowerment they experience is truly rewarding,” added Weerts.

“I’ve been in numerous storytelling shows around Southern California over the past few years, but it is far more meaningful for me to offer the opportunity to others to share their truths and take the rest of us along on their journeys. Storytelling connects us and I think we crave connection, now perhaps more than ever.”

The “new stories range from the funny as one mom attempts to raise responsible young men to the challenging as another mother shares her experiences coming to terms with autism,” Weerts said. “This collection of stories is powerful and poignant, hilarious and heartbreaking with a beautiful diverse cast!”

About 30 Providencia Elementary students read to dogs, cats and rabbits at the Burbank Animal Shelter after school on Tuesday, April 25.

The third-, fourth- and fifth-graders were brought by their parents to read to the animals in a program organized by third-grade teacher Kelly Ohrt and Animal Control Officer Stacie Levin-Wood.

“I love children, animals and teaching!” explained Ohrt. “I’m always trying to think of incentives to get my students reading more often. So this seemed like something they would love, plus the animals could benefit too.”

Ohrt came across this idea of students reading to shelter animals in the summer of 2016, reading reports of similar stories online. She contacted the Burbank Animal Shelter at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year and worked with the Burbank City Attorney, the Shelter and the Burbank Unified School District to get the program sorted out.

“The students and parents were very excited to have this opportunity,” said Ohrt.

“I put chairs in all of the rooms where we house animals,” said Levin-Wood. “I figured there might be some children who would be more comfortable reading to a bunny that would not bark and if they preferred cats, they could read to them instead.”

“The dogs were at peace and seemed very comfortable with the children,” added Levin-Wood. “Normally there is a lot of barking going on when kids are in the kennels, but yesterday they were zen and composed and seemed to enjoy the attention and mirrored the children’s calmness.”

“I am excited to start this program on a regular basis and I have no doubt that it will benefit both the children and our animals and that’s what it should be about really.”

“As I walked around taking pics and watching the students read, I saw the empathy and caring in their faces,” Ohrt also said. “It really warmed my heart to see it.”

“The animals seemed to really enjoy it too and many were so relaxed by it that they cuddled up next to the children and fell asleep.”

“So great to witness, especially when it helped out so many of the animals at a time when they need it the most.”

Ohrt and Levin-Wood plan to continue the reading program at the Burbank Animal Shelter on a monthly basis when school resumes for the 2017-18 school year.

It isn’t every day that local high school golfers have to face heavy winds.

But that’s the obstacle they hoped to overcome Thursday afternoon in the sixth and final regular season Pacific League golf match at De Bell Golf Course.

In the end, Arcadia High edged out Burroughs in the team standings, but Burroughs Louis D’Aquila shared low-medalist honors.

The senior, who plans to play at College of the Canyons next year, shot 76 on the par-71 course, tying him with Crescenta Valley’s Trey Ballard.

“It was hard judging the distances because the winds would switch on you, with you or against you,” D’Aquila said. “I’ve never seen the winds like this before. I’ve seen winds, but not like this.”
Just three teams had enough players to score in the team competition. Arcadia shot 426, followed by Burroughs at 430 and Burbank at 449.

“The wind made it really hard to hit the ball pure and straight and I couldn’t really get a grip on my swing because I had to alter a bunch of my shots,” Burbank’s Cole Pendarvis said.
Pendarvis, who shot 88, even got a scare on the course.

“I was on the 17th tee box. As we were putting on the 16th hole, the tree fell down right next to my bag,” he said.” It was just crazy. The scores are inflated because of the wind. Nobody could get a grip on where to hit the ball and how to use their swing properly.”

Following D’Aquila for Burroughs was sophomore Jake Panikowski, who shot 83. Rob Ceja (85), Dylan Roy (92), Aaron Cohen (94) and Myles Sherry (97) round ou the Indians.

Burbank was led by Louis Calzado, who shot 87. Pendarvis and Hayden Chase each shot 88. Niko Coccio shot 91, Nick Toczek 95 and Benjamin Kim 97.

In finishing the regular season, Burbank ended up second with 19 points behind Arcadia, which easily took the league title with 30 points. Crescenta Valley took third with 17 and Burroughs was fourth with 16 points.

The league finals are next week at the Wilson and Harding courses at Griffith Park, respectively.

Hoping to exact some revenge after an earlier one-run setback in eight innings to Crescenta Valley High, the Burroughs softball team did just that by routing the host Falcons 14-0 in a Pacific League match that was halted after six innings on Thursday afternoon.

“I absolutely expected a tight game,” first-year Burroughs coach Wes Tanigawa said. “CV’s a team that you can’t count out.”

Why was the outcome different this time than the first meeting in April?

“It was mostly mental,” Tanigawa explained. “The girls had their minds in the right place and when they do, they’re capable of doing this.”

Pitching ace Presley Miraglia allowed one hit and came within two outs of a no-hitter.

“This was probably one of the best games I’ve pitched,” said the junior hurler. “This time we found their weak points and we took advantage of them.”

Miraglia retired the side in order during the first, third and fourth innings and was helped by two nifty defensive efforts from junior second baseman Nikki Ricciardella in the opening frame and the fourth.

Senior shortstop Lauren Lopez also turned in a defensive gem in the sixth inning after Miraglia surrendered a one-out single to center field by senior Jessica Yzaguirre.

The bulk of the scoring came in the fifth and sixth innings as the Indians, who are in a three-way tie for first place in league with the Falcons (16-7-1 and 8-2 in league) and Arcadia, tallied seven and six runs.

Ten entered the batter’s box in the fifth inning and six contributed base hits.

Senior Tatiana Caceres had a run-scoring double to left center, junior Hannah Talavera added a two-run double to right center, while senior Brianna Johnson, the birthday girl, roped a run-scoring double to the gap in left.

Sophomore Mia Storer tossed in a run-producing single the opposite way to right,  junior Jessica Amaya had a sacrifice fly and Lopez threw in a single to right field and later scored.

Ricciardella led off and reached base via an error and senior Amanda Flores was also safe on a miscue and both eventually scored.

Junior Emily Mulcahey was tagged with the defeat after surrendering nine hits across five innings, striking out one, walking one and hitting a batter.

Eleven trotted to the plate in the sixth inning for the Indians (15-8 and 8-2 in league) against freshman Maddie De Leon and four were aboard on base hits.

Flores opened with a single to right field, went to second on an error and later scored.

Talavera had a one-out single to left field and also crossed the plate. Storer walked with the bases filled while sophomore pinch hitter Kaitlin Escamilla delivered a run-scoring hit to center field that made it 12-0.

When sophomore pinch hitter Morgan Mersola reached on a fielder’s choice, the Indians’ lead swelled to 13-0.

After Flores chipped in with an infield single, the advantage became 14-0.

Burroughs led 1-0 in the fourth inning when Lopez’s hard-hit ball went off the glove of sophomore third baseman Peyton Hause for a single and then took second base on Mulcahey’s wild pitch.

Johnson’s sharp single to left field moved Lopez to third and a single by Miraglia (two hits) to center field produced the game’s first run.

After the lopsided victory, assistant coach Bill Dunaway was handed a store-bought container of cupcakes intended for Johnson and her teammates.

After all it was time to celebrate both a birthday and a job well done on the field.

As a boy growing up here, I lived about 8 blocks up the street from the Andrew Jergens Plant.

I and my friends always had no idea of what time it was when playing outside. However we all told time the same way by the sound of the Jergens Plant break and main steam whistles. There was a deep one that signaled the 8am “start Work” sounding and the eventual work is over for today sounding at 5 pm.

In between there was a higher pitched whistle that signaled 10 am and 2pm Breaks and the High Noon lunch whistle. These alerts helped us maximize our play time and let us know when it was time to skedaddle home to avoid punishment.

Aside from the accurate time keeping the plant afforded me and my friends it also was the large local plant that produced the company’s Creams, Lotions and soaps as well as employing a large number of Burbankers.

It is always fun when you go to the store for a product and then drive by the place it was made on the way home.

We talk of other big businesses in Burbank such as Moorland Truck Co. but Jergens was every bit as big and productive.

Jergens produced their products in Burbank for over 60 years, first coming here in the mid 1920’s. The plant was located at 99 West Verdugo where Verdugo met the Railroad tracks.

I have been the proud owner of the large and small steam whistles from the top of the plant for several years. I recently donated the break whistle to the Historical society.

Burbank firefighters were dispatched on a possible structure fire at 11:41 am on Thursday, April 27 at 810 N. Mariposa in Burbank. On route to the scene, firefighters could see smoke from the distance.

Once on scene, firemen went to work to knock down the flames while ventilating the roof area. After a quick search firefighters found no one inside but it was later determined that a couple of pets have not been accounted for.

During the battle, power lines were knocked down giving the firemen an additional hazard to work around. The fire was knocked down at 12:15 pm.

Firefighters on scene reported $50,000 damage to the contents of the structure and $175,000 in damage to the structure. Additionally there was $35,000 in damage done to a vehicle on the property next door.

The cause of the fire is still be investigated by Burbank Fire Investigators.

For 10 roller coaster and exhausting innings, Burroughs High and Arcadia battled in a Pacific League clash on Friday afternoon at Tomahawk Field.

During the see-saw event, the Indians pulled ahead by one run heading into the seventh, but the dogged and determined Apaches evened it, then tallied four runs and eventually prevailed 7-4.

Senior Justin Palafox’s one-out double to right center in the sixth was followed by an intentional walk to junior Andrew Jacob Barrera.

Junior Nathan Palafox was safe on a force out which moved his older brother to third base, who then scored on an error that put the Indians ahead 3-2.

The Apaches tied it with a run in the seventh when senior John Woo (two hits) singled in sophomore Jeffrey Castillo (three hits), who led off with a double to left field.

“They did the best they could,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said of his club. “We made them earn the win.”

Arcadia (13-8 and 9-1 in league) erupted for four runs in the 10th and trotted seven batters to the plate.

Key hits were junior Chase Pedersen’s run-scoring double to center field and junior James Nagaoka’s single to right center that scored a run while sophomore Jacob Lopez’s fielder’s choice brought in another tally.

“The great thing about baseball is you can come back the next day,” Sherwood noted. “You play the game. When it ends, it’s over. That’s baseball.”

The Indians (12-10-1 and 8-3 in league) made it close with a run in the bottom of the 10th when the Apaches committed two errors.

Sherwood believes his team can still reach the postseason.

“We’re battling. We need to win two more games for a playoff spot,” he said. “I think we can do it.”

In the frame, Justin Palafox was hit by a pitch and scooted to second and third base on an error and scored on another miscue.

Burroughs was able to nick Arcadia senior pitcher Jacob Kampen, who went six innings, giving up five hits with six strikeouts and three walks, for two runs in the second inning.

Barrera led off with a double to right center, moved to third base on a Nathan Palafox’s fly ball and scored on a wild pitch that made it 1-0.

It became 2-0 when junior Daniel Leonard walked, went to second base on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a double to left center from junior Brandon Giraldo (two hits).

Arcadia scored two runs in the third inning when Lopez was hit by sophomore Niccolo Chuidian’s offering, took second base on Castillo’s base hit to left center and scored on a one-out double down the right-field line by Woo.

Two batters later and with the bases filled, Pedersen walked to level it at 2-2.

Chuidian toured six-plus innings, allowing six hits with four walks, one hit batter and one strikeout with three runs.

When Chuidian was asked can the Indians bounce back, he was direct.

“We’re going to have to,” he said. “There’s always opportunities to be taken advantage of and we didn’t.”

What was Chuidian’s approach against the Apaches?

“I needed to throw strikes and get ahead early in the count,” he said with emotion on his face and misty eyes.

Senior Brandon Martinez went one frame, fanning one and allowing one hit while senior Henrik Buchanan pitched one inning and walked one.

Senior Matthew Rudas worked one inning, walked two including the go-ahead run.

Junior Jacob Real gave up two hits, walked a batter, hit a batter and had one strikeout in one inning.

Senior hurler Matthew Miao was credited with the win after toiling four innings, surrendering four hits with two strikeouts and two walks and one hit batter.

The Indians collected nine hits with freshman Ricardo Perez getting three singles.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) announced that he will host the annual Congressional Art Competition Forum & Exhibit for the 28^th District, featuring students’ artwork from the 28^th Congressional District, on Thursday, May 11, 2017. The Congressional Art Competition receives submissions from all across the country. The winner from each Congressional District has their work displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. This year, 54 students from 24 schools located in the 28^th District participated in the competition.

In addition, for the last several years, Rep. Schiff hosts a “People’s Choice” award, which will be decided through an online vote. To vote for the “People’s Choice,” constituents should go to Rep. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide the opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, hundreds of thousands of high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.

The first place winner’s artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year, the piece awarded second place will be displayed in the Congressman’s Washington, D.C. Office for one year, the piece awarded third place will hang in his Burbank District Office for one year and the “People’s Choice” winner’s artwork will be displayed in Rep. Schiff’s Hollywood District Office
The winners of the contest will be announced at the 28^th Congressional Art Competition Forum & Exhibit on Thursday, May 11, 2017. All student participants will receive a Congressional Certificate of Recognition. The exhibit will be held at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge at Van de Kamp Hall located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. Burbank City Council Members elected their colleague Will Rogers as the new Mayor of Burbank during City Council’s annual Reorganization meeting Monday morning, May 1, in a ceremony that also featured the swearing in of first time Council Member Sharon Springer.

Rogers, who is serving as Mayor for the first time, replaces Council Member Jess Talamantes who will continue his role as a City Council Member after serving as Mayor for the past twelve months. Council also elected Council Member Emily Gabel-Luddy to serve as Vice Mayor. Both votes were 5-0.

Talamantes presented different staff members with small gifts while City Manager Ron Davis presented the former Mayor with a scrap book filled with his year as the City’s Mayor.

Rogers, elected to the Council in 2015, spent decades as an award winning free-lance writer, with a specialty in investigative journalism, whose work has been featured in numerous newspapers and magazines.

The Reorganization ceremony also included the swearing in of incumbent Council Members Jess Talamantes and Bob Frutos and new member Sharon Springer, the top three vote-getters in the recent Burbank Municipal Election. Council Member Springer replaces outgoing Council Member Dr. David Gordon who lost his bid for a fourth term after serving approximately eleven years as a City Council Member.

Members of the city staff arranged for a video retrospect of his years on both the Planning Board and the City Council.  He thanked staff and the public for all of the work they accomplished with him over the years and congratulated Springer with some advice to use her own judgement and not just believe everything that is told to her.

Besides the council members, City Treasurer Debbie Kukta and City Clerk Zizette Mullins were also sworn in to new terms after having run unopposed.

The co-authors of From Cows to Concrete: The Rise and Fall of Farming in Los Angeles, Rachel Surls and Judith Gerber, present an illustrated tour of Burbank farming and Southern California’s forgotten history as an agriculture center at the Buena Vista Library on Wednesday, May 3.

“Long before Los Angeles County was the nation’s largest urban center, it was the country’s agricultural heartland, producing an abundance of grain, fruit, vegetables, milk and much more,” explained Surls. “With a special focus on Burbank and surrounding areas, we’ll trace this history from pre-colonial times to the present, including how post WWII development paved over the area’s farm bounty.”

“We’ll show some amazing images from Burbank’s past that will spark discussion about how the current passion for gardening, farmers markets and local food not only ties in with local history, but may also inform the future,” she added.

“Human population has grown from 2 billion to 7.5 billion in the past 100 years and we have an enormous appetite,” commented Kreigh Hampel, Recycling Coordinator for the City of Burbank’s Public Works Department. “By understanding the history of food, water and development, we can better understand the world’s need for secure local food systems.”

“Rachael Surls and Judith Gerber have uncovered L.A.’s agricultural history using their wise insights in urban agriculture, food policy and community gardens,” Hampel also said. “If you think Los Angeles is a food desert, you’ll be delighted to know about the rising focus on healthy soils, local food councils and urban agriculture.”

The library became interested in hosting Surls and Gerber’s presentation on Burbank farming and Southland agricultural history after Amy Hammes from the Burbank Recycle Center showed the film Just Eat It in 2016, explained Librarian Hubert Kozak.

Just Eat It is a documentary about the waste in the food production system from farm to retail to individual households.

“We were surprised by the large audience for this event,” added Kozak. “They asked a lot of questions. It became apparent that this issue resonates not only with consumers and food lovers but also with an entire local network in the community of people concerned about environmental issues and sustainable urban living, including those who are a part of the current urban farming movement.”

From Cows to Concrete makes some of these same connections as it reviews the history of farming in Los Angeles.

“Like all history, it shows us that we have options,” Kozak said. “And among the history programs we do at the library, the ones we like best are those that tell a local story that connects older and younger generations living in this community.”

“Many of us remember growing up in Los Angeles and living in areas that were still in transition from farmlands to suburbia, areas still dotted with open fields and orchards,” he added. “Younger people growing up in this area today just have no idea that the area they lived in was ever anything else, or that life could be lived any other way, and it is important to the decisions they make about their future to know this is not so.”

The illustrated tour of From Cows to Concrete begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free to the public.

The Burbank Noon Rotary hosted its second annual Teacher of Excellence Awards ceremony recently and recognized three outstanding middle school teachers in the Burbank Unified School District.

The purpose of the Teacher of Excellence award is to  foster and encourage excellence in teaching and dedication to education, explained Rotary President Jessa Freemyer.

“Burbank Noon Rotary wishes to demonstrate in a concrete way, that the community cares about the quality of public schools by conducting a competition to select those exceptional teachers that deserve special recognition,” she said.

Cari Knight, Helen Quayle and Lynn Rothacker were recognized by Burbank Noon Rotary as Burbank Unified School District Teachers of Excellence.

Cari Knight, who teaches science at Luther Burbank Middle School, “has been an exemplary teacher who is invested in the success of her learners. Cari Knight goes above and beyond to make science come alive. She truly engages students and makes learning fun and memorable while dealing with very complex content.”

David Starr Jordan Middle School Physical Education teacher Helen Quayle “was selected due to her selfless commitment to the Jordan School community. Since she started at Jordan, Helen has been involved in almost every aspect of the school community. She is always there to help staff and students, and is willing to do whatever it takes to help the school succeed.”

Despite the Pacific League banner already having been secured, the Burroughs High boys’ volleyball team still wanted to play with tenacity and determination in Tuesday night’s match with rival Burbank, and it showed after sweeping, 25-18, 25-18, 25-8.

Though the Bulldogs lost both league meetings to the Indians, each team qualified for the upcoming CIF Southern Section playoffs.

After taking the first two sets, the host Indians trailed 2-1 in the third game, but then scored the next 12 points and led 13-2 when Burbank senior setter Jonathan Tapan’s attempt sailed out of bounds.

“It’s an avalanche,” Burroughs coach Joel Brinton said of the run. “They had to be praying for a service error.”

In quick order, the Indians (16-13 and 10-0 in league) waltzed ahead 18-3 on a tapper from junior middle blocker Cole Kaitz, who tossed in six kills.

From this point, Burroughs outscored Burbank, which finished in third place, 7-5, including two winners from senior middle blocker Jarrett Malone (seven kills with seven digs and four blocks) and the match-clincher on senior opposite hitter Kurt Miller’s dagger.

“I was really impressed with the third game,” Brinton said. “The guys stayed hungry during every point.”

Brinton went on: “Our goal was to be laser focused for the whole match,” he said. “That’s the best focus we’ve had in a match.”

The first set saw the Indians burst in front 5-1 on junior middle blocker William Singleton’s tip.

Burroughs then moved in front 9-4 when Burbank junior outside hitter Jonathan Ragheb’s shot missed the target.

Slowly but surely, the Indians led 14-9 on a kill from Kaitz, 17-10 on an ace from senior outside hitter Conner Ludlum (nine kills) and 18-10 on Ludlum’s tapper.

The Bulldogs (22-13 and 6-4 in league) were able to get within 21-14 on a service winner from Ragheb, but the Indians were still in control as they moved ahead 23-16 on Ludlum’s smash.

Burbank senior opposite hitter Adrian Rivera played with immense skill, passion and poise, but his effort simply wasn’t enough.

“The first two sets we couldn’t make our serves,” Rivera said. “We all tried really hard and we gave 100 percent on the court.”

Knowing that he’s one of the leaders, Rivera wanted to show the way.

“It starts with one person,” he said. “I give 130 percent on the court, but everyone gave everything they had.”

Rivera’s winners closed the gap to 6-3, 7-4, 13-9 and 18-11 in the first set and 18-4, 18-5 and 21-8 in the third set.

Burroughs took the opening frame by taking two of the last three points including a kill from Ludlum that made it 24-17 and senior libero Everett Kanoho’s bullet for the clincher.

Early in the second set it was a back-and-forth affair with Burbank taking a 6-4 lead on junior middle blocker Jonathan Valmonte’s kill.

The tide then shifted in favor of the Indians, who forged ahead 15-9 on Malone’s tapper.

The Bulldogs closed to within 18-13 on Ragheb’s smash, but the Indians righted the ship and moved in front 20-14 on a combined block from Singleton and Kaitz.

The Indians then took five of the next nine points including the game-winner on Malone’s service ace.

Burroughs junior outside hitter Diego Rosal finished with six kills and three aces while junior setter Jose Levi Benitez contributed 25 assists.

On Tuesday night May 2, at about 9:50 P.M., the Burbank Police Department responded to Starbucks, located at 300 North San Fernando Boulevard, regarding a suspicious item left on a patio table.

The item was found by a customer who alerted Starbucks employees.

The item, which was found unattended, was rectangular in shape and appeared to have copper wiring attached and exposed.

Due to the densely populated area of downtown Burbank, coupled with the suspicious appearance of the item, the area surrounding Starbucks was cordoned off as a precaution.

Investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson and Explosives Detail responded to the scene. They examined the item and determined it was not an explosive device and was not dangerous.

Several people in that area that were inside the businesses were evacuated including cast members who had just preformed at the Colony Theatre and left their vehicles in the area overnight.

Immediately following the investigation, the area surrounding Starbucks was re-opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Burbank Firefighters along with Burbank Police officers were called to the flood control channel on Flower Street near Olive Avenue behind Borrmann Steel Tuesday after a man jumped off a bridge into the channel.

The 30 year old Lancaster man, who was suffering from one, possibly two broken legs, was treated by Burbank Paramedics.

The rescue required Firefighters to descend into the wash and then use ropes and a stokes basket that was lifted by a fire truck with specialized equipment.

The victim, who was reportedly under the influence, was transported to a trauma center for treatment.

In the spirit of “people helping people” (a cornerstone of the credit union social mission), UMe is collecting canned goods to support Burbank’s less fortunate. Donations benefit the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC), and are accepted in UMe’s lobby from May 1 – May 31, 2017.

Burroughs High freshman Maya Wilson picked a good time to be at her best.
Wilson set school records in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events Thursday in the Pacific League finals at Burbank High.
“I’m in the middle of taper, so I think I’ll be able to peak at CIF,” Wilson said. ” Just a little rest helped me get these times today. I can’t wait to see what happens at CIF.”
Wilson won the 200 freestyle in one minute, 51.93 seconds. She narrowly missed the league record of 1:51.76, set by former Crescenta Valley star Heather MacDougall.

In the 500 freestyle, Wilson won in 5:04.66, a personal best by more than four seconds.
She also swam a school record setting time in the 100 free while being a part of the 4 x 100 free relay, going 52.85 on her leg.
“It’s cool to get these as a freshman,” Wilson said.
Burbank High’s Roman Rostomyan automatically qualified for CIF in the 100 butterfly as he finished second to Glendale High star Trenton Julian. Julian set a meet record in going 49.08. Rostomyan went 51.57. The CIF automatic qualifying standard is 52.5. Burroughs Reigh Abaoag finished third in 53.2, which earned him CIF consideration.
Burbank won the league title in the boys’ 200 free relay. The team of Justin Miller, David Lee, Ashot Gavurmadzhyan and Roman Rostomyan went 1:31.46, which is a CIF consideration time.
The Burbank team with the same four swimmers took third in league in the 400 free relay in 3:21.58. They also CIF consideration for that effort.

“I knew from the beginning this year was going to be our strongest,” said Rostomyan, who is a senior. “My exceeded my expectations by far and we want to do even better at CIF.”
Burroughs’ Abaoag earned a CIF consideration time in the 100 breaststroke, going 1:00.06 in finishing fourth.
