A first inning, four-run outburst made Niccolo Chuidian’s six-inning stretch on the mound that much easier as the right-handed pitcher was the recipient of an 8-0 Burroughs High victory over Glendale on Friday afternoon at Tomahawk Field.

“I don’t think that he had his really good stuff,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said of his sophomore hurler. “That early lead really helped him.”

In that opening frame, the Indians trotted eight batters to the plate and saw the first six reach base off losing pitcher, senior Jacob Rangel, who went one and two-third innings, surrendering five of the eight hits with two walks and one hit batter.

Junior Andrew Jacob Barrera delivered a clutch two-run triple to left center that plated freshman Ricardo Perez, who singled up the middle and senior Riley Hooper, who walked.

The first run was tallied by senior Justin Palafox, who led off with a hit to right field and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Senior Brandon Martinez had a run-producing single to left field that brought home Barrera.

Chuidian wasn’t especially sharp over those six frames, hitting three batters with one walk, but allowed only three hits, struck out six and recorded his fifth win without a loss this season.

“I felt normal out there, but I was missing high a lot,” said Chuidian. “But I got the job done.”

Chuidian said his mechanics were slightly off. “I want to be consistent with my release point and today I wasn’t,” he noted. “I’m always looking to be consistent. I think that I’m stronger now than when the season began.”

Burroughs (9-7 and 5-1 in league) extended its advantage to 5-0 in the second inning when Palafox singled with one out, scooted to second base on Perez’s grounder and scored when Hooper was safe on an error.

The Indians tacked on a run in the third inning to make it 6-0 when Martinez walked to lead off the frame and eventually scored on two errors by the Nitros (1-15-1 and 0-7 in league).

In the fourth, the Indians made it 7-0 on Hooper’s triple to right center as Perez crossed the plate after walking to open the inning.

The second run made it 8-0 on Barrera’s sacrifice fly to right as Hooper came around.

Burroughs junior Steven Gonzalez singled in the fourth inning with two out and pinch runner, freshman Adan Perez was left stranded while junior Matthew Diaz added a two-out base hit in the sixth inning, and was also left stranded.

Senior Henrik Buchanan worked the seventh inning, allowing one hit with a strikeout and a hit batter.

Senior Bryce Wong collected a pair of singles for Glendale, which played the Indians close three days earlier.

“That was a different team than the one we watched on Tuesday,” Sherwood said. “It seems that we always play better on Friday. Maybe it’s home cooking?”

Black Angus’ Spring Menu Items Send Your Taste Buds Into Full Bloom

Black Angus Steakhouse Burbank has some new Spring items on their menu and they will put a spring in your step with every bite.

Start your meal off with the Hand-Shaken Strawberry Mojito that is Spring in glass. The refreshing Bacardi Limon Rum with fresh California Strawberries, mint and lime can cool you off on even the hottest of days. They also have a Spiked Roseberry Lemonade made with Smirnoff Vodka, fresh California strawberries, Chloe Rose Wine and their house-made sparkling lemonade. That cocktail goes down smoothly especially with their scrumptious Sampler Appetizer. That starter item is served with Boneless Chipotle-Buffalo Strips, Loaded Potato Skins, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail and Crispy Fried Garlic-Pepper Zucchini with Cucumber Sauce. Enough for everyone to share and enjoy. When it comes to drinks, it is hard to just have one.

A Spring delicacy is a lamb and the the steakhouse has flown in aged New Zealand lamb that just melts in your mouth for the season. The Rack of Lamb is aged 45 days, then marinated in a soy oil, rosemary and garlic and finally it is roasted with their own special seasoning all before it is served to you on a plate with Mint Chimichurri or mint jelly. I suggest going with the Mint Chimichurri because the sauce is so delicious, you will want to drink it. If you do not normally eat lamb because of the gamey taste, then this is the one for you. You can get a half or a full rack and it is more than enough to satisfy your bellies. Along with the tender meat, you get two sides. I went with the Fresh Broccoli in Garlic Sauce and Roasted Brussels Sprouts. The latter is so good; you will even be able to get the pickiest of kids to eat them.

If you still have room for dessert, which I highly suggest you do, the New York Style Cheesecake with strawberry sauce is the way to go. The creaminess of the cake is the perfect end to a perfect meal.

If the lamb is not the way you want to go, they are testing out six new burgers The Al Pastor is a chili rubbed burger topped with chipotle mayo, pickled jalapeno, Jack cheese, ham, bacon and pineapple jam. My favorite is the SOB aka South of the Border, it has lime-cilantro mayo, pickled jalapeno, Pepper Jack cheese, crispy breaded jalapeno and jalapeno-cilantro slaw. They are also trying out a BBQ Bacon, a Pastrami Reuben, Buffalo and Bleu and finally a Patty Melt. Each burger sounds better than the one before and I cannot wait to try them all.

Black Angus Steakhouse Burbank is located at 235 South Ikea Way. The restaurant is open on Easter from 11a-9p., and on all other days it closes at 10p. I do not know what is better way to enjoy Spring than with their special items that will be the highlight of your season to your taste buds.

Glendale Man Arrested for ATM Explosion at Car Wash

The Burbank Police Department has arrested a man in connection with recent ATM explosions and attempted thefts from the machines.

On April 8, 2017, at about 4:20 AM, Burbank Police responded to the Magnolia Car Wash, located in the 900 block of West Magnolia Blvd., regarding a loud noise and possible explosion. When Police Officers arrived, they found a stand-alone automated teller machine (ATM) located outside of the cashier’s office with significant damage. A closer inspection of the ATM suggested that some type of explosive was used in an attempt to steal money from the machine. Burbank Police Detectives responded to the scene along with investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson/Explosives Detail.

The investigation led to the discovery of video surveillance footage which helped identify a vehicle involved in this incident. The registered owner of that vehicle was identified as Yakov Rozenoyer, a 35-year-old man from Glendale. Rozenoyer is considered a suspect in the ATM explosion in Burbank, as well as a second ATM explosion which occurred in the city of Los Angeles about a week earlier.

On April 13, 2017, Rozenoyer was detained in the city of Eagle Rock for an unrelated crime. At the time of his detention, Rozenoyer was observed to have fresh burn marks on his hands. Burbank Police Investigators responded to the Eagle Rock area and located Rozenoyer’s vehicle. A search warrant was obtained and items of evidence were found inside the car, linking Rozenoyer to the ATM explosions. He was placed under arrest and booked into the Burbank City Jail.

On April 17, 2017, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed two counts of possessing and exploding a destructive/explosive device, two counts of felony vandalism, and one count of burglary against Yakov Rozenoyer. He is currently being held on $500,000 bail and is due in court April 18.

Rep. Schiff will present and enter a special tribute into the Congressional Record for Karen Volpei-Gussow (below). On Saturday, April 22, Rep. Schiff will honor these women at a luncheon in Echo Park.

A Tribute to Karen Volpei-Gussow – 28th Congressional District Woman of the Year

I rise today in honor of Women’s History Month.  Each year, we pay special tribute to the contributions and sacrifices made by our nation’s women.  It is an honor to pay homage to outstanding women who are making a difference in my Congressional District.  I would like to recognize a remarkable woman, Karen Volpei-Gussow of Burbank, California.

For over twenty years, Ms. Volpei-Gussow has symbolized the tireless and dedicated work of a true pillar of her community.  She has given of herself with joy, humility, and grace and, along the way, has changed so many lives for the better in Burbank.  Her kind and relaxed demeanor is not only evident in her treasured relationships with her husband Barry, her family and friends, but also in her charitable work in the community.

Her past community involvement includes Ambassador Chair of the Burbank Chamber of Commerce, Docent at the Burbank Historical Society’s Gordon R. Howard Museum, and Board Member of both the Kids Community Dental Clinic and The Burbank Association of REALTORS, Community Service Foundation.

Ms. Volpei-Gussow’s charitable and professional work has not gone unnoticed as she was awarded 2012 “Realtor of the Year” by the Burbank Association of REALTORS and named “Community Leader of the Year” at the Boys and Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley 2013 Gala Dinner.

Ms. Volpei-Gussow rarely says no when asked to give a helping hand, and once given, her level of leadership, support, and generosity never waivers. She is a community leader who is unafraid of challenging the ways things were done in the past as she looks towards the future with a bold new plan to make the organizations she is involved with and the City of Burbank grow and thrive.

I ask all Members to join me in honoring an exceptional woman of California’s 28th Congressional District, Karen Volpei-Gussow.

Owner of Burbank Drug Wholesale Company Arrested in $20 Million Federal ‘Structuring’ Conspiracy

The following is a release by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California

The owners of two local drug wholesale companies were among four defendants taken into custody this morning on federal “structuring” charges that allege they made millions of dollars in cash deposits designed to circumvent federal reporting requirements.

Law enforcement authorities this morning arrested Richard Kayseryan, 41, of Burbank, the owner of Burbank-based TriMed Medical Wholesalers, Inc. Kayseryan is the lead defendant in a 20-count indictment returned on April 6 by a federal grand jury that charges four individuals and TriMed in relation to two separate schemes to structure millions of dollars in proceeds through “funnel” bank accounts set up in the names of shell companies.

Two other defendants – Derou Biglari, 31, and Jivani Markarian, 33, who own the Glendale-based drug wholesale business JD Pharmaceutical Wholesaler, Inc. – and the fourth defendant – Rafik Mesropyan, 56 – surrendered this morning. These three co-conspirators, all Glendale residents, are charged with depositing millions of dollars of TriMed checks for Kayseryan, and returning the funds to him in the form of cash.

The four individuals and TriMed are expected to be arraigned on the indictment this afternoon in United States District Court.

As part of the scheme, TriMed collected millions of dollars from business activities and Kayseryan prepared checks that he delivered to his co-defendants. The co-conspirators deposited the checks into the funnel accounts and immediately withdrew the funds in cash in amounts at or under $10,000 per transaction, according to the indictment. These transactions were designed to prevent banks from reporting the cash withdrawals to the federal government, which is required for every cash transaction of more than $10,000.

The indictment also charges Kayseryan with lying to federal agents about the funds during an interview in June 2016. Kayseryan allegedly falsely claimed that “he issued TriMed checks payable to the shell businesses,…for the purpose of making interest-bearing ‘investments’ in the shell businesses” and that he “did not receive ‘one cent’ of the funds from the TriMed checks back.” In fact, the businesses did not exist at all, and Kayseryan received millions of dollars in funds back from the checks in the form of cash.

Finally, the indictment charges Kayseryan with filing false tax returns that fraudulently overstated TriMed’s business expenses.

Investigators believe that Kayseryan wrote checks to the shell companies from 2010 through 2015 totaling more than $20 million and that Kayseryan claimed these checks were to pay business expenses. In fact, most of the shell companies did not actually exist other than on paper.

This indictment marks the third phase of Operation “Psyched Out.” The investigation previously resulted in convictions against 17 defendants connected with the operators of a fraudulent medical clinic, Manor Medical Imaging. A medical doctor employed at the location, Kenneth Johnson, and two owners of a San Marino pharmacy, Phic Lim and Theanna Khou, were convicted in that case. In the second phase, the owner of a Glendale pharmacy, Peter Bagdasarian, was convicted of prescription drug misbranding connected to the scheme.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

If convicted of the 20 counts in the indictment, Kayseryan would face a statutory maximum of 94 years in prison. Biglari and Markarian, if convicted, would each face 45 years, and Mesropyan could be sentenced to as much as 35 years in prison.

Two other conspirators, identified in the indictment by initials as M.F. and S.G., previously pled guilty to federal structuring charges.

The investigation was conducted by IRS Criminal Investigation, the California Department of Justice Tax Recovery and Criminal Enforcement Task Force, the Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Benjamin R. Barron and Christopher Kendall of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Burbank Unified School District officials unveiled new murals created by Nickelodeon interns at the Horace Mann Child Development Center on Thursday, April 13. The murals decorate the front of the child care center and the art shed, located on the playground.

Perla Leyvas, Supervisor of the Horace Mann Child Development Center, worked with the spring semester Nickterns to develop the murals.

“We wanted to include a deer since it is our school mascot,” Leyvas explained. “I also wanted nature to be depicted since our school has the beautiful hills as a backdrop and we are fortunate to see many wildlife roaming the hills.”

“I wanted ‘imagination’ to also be part of the design,” Leyvas added, noting Horace Mann Child Development center serves children ages three months to four years of age.

The Nickterns submitted six different mural designs for Leyvas’ consideration and “it was a difficult decision to choose only two, because all the designs were wonderful.”

The young children at the Center were very excited and inspired, watching the Nickterns stenciling the mural layout on the shed.

The youngsters asked for chalk “so that they too could draw while the interns were sketching. Each day the children watched in awe as the murals progressed,” Leyvas said.

The Nickterns worked from April 3 through April 12 on the murals, spending most days on site until 8:00 p.m.

“We are so grateful to Nickelodeon for the murals, and once the construction is completed and we move to our building we can’t wait for everyone to see the mural in the front of our school.”

Four Burbank Secondary Schools Earn Gold Ribbon Awards

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today announced that 275 middle schools and high schools are being honored under the Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program.

“These terrific schools are leading the way in embracing our new rigorous academic standards and showing others how to help students succeed on their way to 21st century careers and college,” Torlakson said. “I look forward to travelling the state to honor these schools and to help share the programs, methods, and techniques that are working.”

The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while California creates new assessment, accountability, and continuous improvement systems. 477 middle schools and high schools applied this year. Schools applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies, and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies. The award acknowledged elementary schools last year.

The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. These include the California Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards.

These schools represent examples of not just excellent teaching, learning, and collaborating, but also highly successful school climate efforts, ranging from real time conflict resolution to positive behavior intervention.

Four Burbank secondary schools were among the winners: Burbank High School, David Starr Jordan Middle School, John Muir Middle School, and Luther Burbank Middle School. Superintendent Matt Hill commented on the news, “We are proud of our schools for being recognized by the California Department of Education as exemplar schools. These Gold Ribbon Awards are another example of the amazing work our employees do on behalf of our students every single day. It is truly and honor to work for such an amazing district.” The winning Burbank schools will be honored at the May 18 Board of Education meeting at Burbank City Hall.

Additionally, Gold Ribbon awardees that are also Title I schools were recognized as Academic Achieving Schools and are identified as such on the list. This additional recognition is given only to schools receiving federal Title I funds that assist in meeting the educational needs of students living at or below the poverty line.

The 2017 Gold Ribbon Schools as well as the 2017 Exemplary Program recipients, Title I Academic Achieving Award Schools, 2017 Green Ribbon Schools, 2017 Civic Learning Award Schools, and the National Blue Ribbon Schools from 2016, will be honored in May during regional ceremonies held in Costa Mesa, Santa Clara, Los Angeles, Visalia, and Sacramento.

Burbank Track Pulls Off Sweep of Burroughs

Burbank High senior track and field standout Vedavit Shetty has been many places.
Wednesday afternoon Shetty got to see what it feels like to earn a victory over crosstown rival Burroughs as the Burbank boys’ team won 73-63. The Burbank girls’ team won 71-60 over Burroughs.
“I’m proud of how we did. We have performed very well, taking second in league,” Shetty said.
Shetty, who has gone to four high schools in four years, competed for Pacific League rival Arcadia last year.
He said he spent his sophomore year at University High of Irvine and his freshman year at Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo. Shetty said he grew up in Northern California, but moved to Southern California to help with his acting career and has moved closer each time to be near the studios.
He has remained unbeaten in league in the 400 meters, the long jump and and the triple jump, the three events he won again Wednesday.
Shetty won the 400 in 52.36 seconds. He took the long jump going 20 feet, 7 inches and the triple jump by going 43 feet, 9 inches.
The Burbank girls’ team was led by seniors Hailey Cusumano and Kira Bochard.

Cusumano, who will compete for UC San Diego next year, won the 100 hurdles in 15.5. She won the long jump by setting a personal best going 17-3 and took the high jump going 4-6. She also ran a leg of the 4 x 400 relay, which Burbank lost.
“Before we ran the 4 x 400 they told us we were losing,” Cusumano said. “That was not very fun to run. We were all not feeling the best. We did our best, but we didn’t win that (event). But it’s nice that we won (the meet).”
Bochard took the 400 (59.4), the 300 hurdles (47.45) and the triple jump (33-3 1/2).
Mikaela Teixeira won the girls’ pole vault with a superb jump of 11-0. Burroughs junior Elizabeth Switzer, who is in her first year competing, went a personal best 10-0.
Burroughs’ girls team was led by junior Emily Virtue, who the 1,600 (5:19.3) and the 800 (2:18.24). This comes after setting a school record in the 3,200 over the weekend in the Mt. Sac Invitational.

Burroughs boys’ team was led by junior Jagdeep Chahal who won the 1,600 (4:31.3) and the 3,200 (10:00.49). Teammate Daniel Fendrich was impressive in winning the 800 (1:58.23).
But the best mark the Indians had was from junior Christian Valles, who set a personal best by going 14-9 in the pole vault.
“I wanted 15 (feet) today, but I had to transition from 14 to 15-foot poles and that’s kind of where I was stuck for a month,” Valles said.
Valles said he would like to get to 15-6 by the end of the season to have a chance at reaching the state championships.

BUSD Breaks Ground On New Modular Classrooms

Burbank Unified officials broke ground for two new modular classroom buildings at Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School on Monday, April 17.

The new buildings replace the aging, existing portable classrooms with more modern facilities and are funded by the Burbank voter-approved Measure S Bond.

“It will be nice to get our teachers and students out of the bungalows and into permanent classrooms,” said Principal Christina Desiderio.

“We thank the Burbank community for their support of Measure S,” commented Matt Hill, Superintendent of the Burbank Unified School District. “This groundbreaking highlights the next phase of the work we are doing to modernize our schools, increase energy efficiency and increase technology for our students.”

Stevenson Elementary’s new modular buildings hold 11 new classrooms with a capacity for 352 students, new restrooms, a utility room and storage room, said Lary Atherton, Program Manager with Cordoba Corporation for the Measure S Bond Projects.

The complete project cost is approximately $5 million and is expected to be completed in October 2017. The modular classroom is a replacement project and does not add any additional student capacity at Stevenson.

Bret Harte and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools are also replacing their aging portable classroom buildings with new modular classrooms.

At Bret Harte, there will be 12 new classrooms for 384 students, four new child care rooms for 96 students, new restrooms, a utility room and a storage room. The complete project cost is approximately $10 million and is scheduled to be completed by May 2018, added Atherton.

Jefferson’s new modular classroom contains nine new classrooms for up to 288 students, new restrooms, a utility room and a storage room. The new modular classroom building is projected to cost $5 million and to be completed by October 2017.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Roosevelt and George Washington Elementary Schools were the first sites that received the new permanent modular classroom buildings. Emerson has four new modular classrooms, Roosevelt has six new classrooms and new restrooms and Washington has eight new classrooms and new restrooms.

Cordoba Corporation released an update on Measure S Bond projects in the fall of 2016 and information on that report can be found in this myBurbank article.

Burbank Softball Takes Out Rival Burroughs, 5-2

From the first inning, it was evident the Burbank High softball team was going to be extremely patient at the plate.

In many at-bats, including a bases-clearing double by junior Melissa Daniel in the sixth inning, the Bulldogs waited for hittable offerings from junior Burroughs ace Presley Miraglia.

The result was Burbank’s 5-2 win in a Pacific League game at a jammed-packed Olive Park on Wednesday night, which snapped a three-game losing streak to its city rival.

“When we play like we’re capable of, like we did tonight, we’re a good team,” Burbank coach Mike Delaney said. “The reason we won was because of all 15 girls.”

Burbank’s lead was 2-1 heading into the sixth inning, but the advantage swelled to four runs on Daniel’s deep blast that saw her attempt to stretch the hit into a triple, but was thrown out at third base.

“The moment that I hit that pitch, I knew it was going to score the runners,” said Daniel, who also doubled in the fifth inning. “I’m really proud of this team. Alyssa Porras [winning pitcher] did an amazing job.”

The Bulldogs (6-11 and 5-3 in league) struck in the initial frame when junior Anysia Gonzalez, who also singled in the sixth, lined a two-out rocket to left center for a home run.

In the third, the lead swelled to 2-0 when sophomore Amaya Broyls sliced an opposite-field double down the left field line that scored sophomore Sarah Garelick, who was safe on an error.

The Indians (13-8 and 6-2 in league) cut the advantage in half with a run in the fourth as junior Hannah Talavera doubled to left center to lead off the inning.

It was the first hit for Burroughs against Porras, who retired the first nine batters she faced including three on strike outs.

Porras, a sophomore, was highly effective as she toured seven innings, striking out four, allowing seven hits and no walks across seven innings.

Senior Lauren Lopez then rifled a base hit to right field as Talavera raced over to third base and scored on Miraglia’s single up the middle.

The Indians came within three runs in the sixth inning as senior Brianna Johnson drew a one-out walk and moved to third base on Miraglia’s double to right field.

The run scored on sophomore Mia Storer’s grounder, but the inning came to an end when senior Amanda Flores lined to Porras.

Sophomore Alex Davis singled in the sixth inning for the Bulldogs, but did not score.

Sophomore Kaitlin Escamilla singled twice for the Indians, and both times failed to cross the plate.

“If the girls don’t have it 100 percent, it could go either way,” Burroughs coach Wes Tanigawa said. “I’m hoping that they’re going to see what happened and not like it.”

Miraglia surrendered six hits and fanned five with one walk over seven innings, but some of her offerings found too much of the plate.

“Presley performs and she performs well,” Tanigawa said. “Sometimes I think that she feels she has to throw perfect pitches. Sometimes I think that she feels an added pressure.”

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Burbank’s First Real School Building

Burbank Grammar School 1913

The first school district in Burbank was established on June 3, 1879, upon petition of Mr. S. W. White and nine other citizens. It was known as Providencia School District.  It was located on Burbank Boulevard, close to what is now Mariposa Street. Dr. David Burbank gave one acre of land for this school.

At that time, there were nine families in the area who sent children to the school. The school was used until about 1887 when it was abandoned because the classes moved to a new grammar school on Magnolia Boulevard and San Fernando Road. The new building faced Magnolia.

This was the City of Burbank’s first real official school building, the old one being more of a house than a dedicated school.

The new grammar school was a two-story frame building with four classrooms upstairs and four downstairs. It had a belfry or bell tower which housed the bell that called the boys and girls of the community to school each morning.

The bell was tolled by means of a long rope, which extended down from the tower, through the building, to within reach of the principal at a point right near the front door.

Lunch Shed can be seen in back of school

At the rear of the school was a windmill and an elevated tank which stored the water pumped from the ground. The space below the water tank was framed in, and it was here that many of the boys and girls kept their bicycles.

Near the present corner of Third Street and Palm Avenue there was a lean-to carriage shed in which the youngsters kept their horses and buggies and their ponies and pony carts while they were in school.

Children came to the Burbank Grammar School from as far away as the area of Brand’s Castle in Glendale, Roscoe (now Sun Valley), and the present Warner Brothers area at the south end of town.

The school playground was the area now occupied by store buildings along the San Fernando Boulevard frontage between Magnolia Boulevard and Palm Avenue.

Burbank Grammar School, 1905

During some of the time that the Burbank Grammar School was used, the children maintained a flower garden in the area in front of the school and a vegetable garden near the shed which was used to house the horses and buggies. The care of those gardens provided practical experience for the boys and girls studying agriculture, one of the main occupations of the area at that time.

There were two lunch houses at the rear of the school, one for boys and one for girls. Each child brought in his own drinking cup (No juice boxes here!) which hung in the lunch house and, of course, the children all brought their own lunches with them each day. ( no Oscar Mayer  Bologna either!)

Games were played at recess time in the schoolyard. These included darebase, pomp-pomp-pull-away and hide and seek.

Burbank Grammar School first grade, 1913

To enter school each morning the boys and girls lined up in separate lines at the front steps and marched into the building in time with the sound of a drum, beat by a selected pupil. (I guess he was called the Drum Monitor)

When the school first opened, there were four teachers and a principal, and the student body totaled about 200 children. The school had classes for grades one through eight.

It is hard to imagine going to school like this in modern times but we have a good number of pictures to give us an idea. I like how the kids in the photos are so serious. It was a hard life back in those days.

Burbank Boys Volleyball Can’t Finish Off CV

The opportunities were certainly available for the Burbank High boys’ volleyball team Friday night when the Bulldogs visited Crescenta Valley High.
The Bulldogs held leads well into each of the first three games. But the Falcons met most of those challenges and went on to win 25-20, 25-22, 24-26, 25-14 over the Bulldogs in a Pacific League match.
“I think we came out with good momentum. I think we came out fired up and ready to play, but sometimes we get into our own heads and let that affect the way we play,” Burbank coach Gaby Gallardo said. “CV is a good team and we have to be able to finish. We had the same problem with Burroughs, being ahead and we let the mistakes affect us mentally and we end up losing the match.”

Burbank (16-10, 4-3 in league) led 10-5 at one point early in the first game and was tied at 18 with CV before Ben Allen took over for the Falcons.
Allen had three of his team-high 15 kills late in the first game.
Burbank was up 14-12 in the second game, before the Falcons closed with a 13-8 run.
The Bulldogs fought back in the third game, led by Adrian Rivera. Rivera, who had a match-high 19 kills, kept his team in the match by recording seven of those kills.
A kill by Rivera made it 24-22. After CV came back to tie the score at 24, Burbank got a key kill from Jonathan Ragheb to make it 25-24. The Bulldogs were able to close out the game thanks to a CV error.
CV (17-3-2, 6-1 in league) was not shaken by Burbank’s ability to avoid a sweep.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage in the fourth game and were never threatened.
Ragheb finished with nine kills and Rory Rickey had eight along with a pair of blocks. Freshman Vincent Vang served three aces. Setter Jonthan Tapan had 42 assists.

Burbank Baseball Can’t Keep Pace, Fall To Crescenta Valley, 7-0

For four brilliant innings, Burbank High’s Henry Leake used his full arsenal and had no-hit visiting Crescenta Valley on Friday night in a Pacific League match.

Then came the fateful fifth as Leake, a senior, allowed his first hit to senior Kewin Ledesma, a run-scoring single to right field, and when the frame was over the Falcons trotted eight hitters to the plate and scored four runs with the help of three errors and eventually pulled away for a 7-0 triumph.

Burbank Coach Bob Hart saw his team fall to Crescenta Valley 7-0 on Friday. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

“You’ve gotta play catch,” Burbank coach Bob Hart said of that fifth inning and saw his club commit five. “They did a lot better job of that than we did.”

The Falcons (19-1 and 8-0 in league) are one of top teams in the CIF Southern Section and now own an impressive 17-game winning streak.

“Our guys hung in there and they competed well, especially Henry,” Hart said. “Crescenta Valley has good hitters and they’re a well coached team.”

In that ragged fifth, senior Will Rees also produced a run-scoring grounder and freshman Will Grimm singled.

Crescenta Valley, which took out the visiting Bulldogs 3-1 on Tuesday, tacked on three insurance runs off sophomore Joseph Clark in the seventh inning on junior Trevor Beer’s grounder and senior Troy Leef’s two-run double to right center.

Clark worked one inning, allowing three hits with one strike out and one hit batter.

“They had some timely hits,” Hart said of the Falcons, who finished with five overall. “That was the difference. They didn’t get a lot of hits, but they were timely.”

The Bulldogs defense committed five errors including three in the fifth inning versus the Falcons. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

Beer’s three-hit, complete-game shutout, saw the left-hander keep the Bulldogs (9-6 and 5-3 in league) off stride as he struck out six and walked two.

Crescenta Valley Coach Phil Torres praised Leak’s performance.

“Henry kept us off balance early in the game,” he said. “We have 21 guys and all 21 guys have played. We just kept plugging away.”

Leake toiled six innings, surrendered two hits with three strikeouts and two walks with one hit batter.

Senior Jonathan Castaneda led off the first inning with a walk, but sophomore Davis Mieliwocki and Leake both grounded out as Castaneda advanced to third base.

Junior Abiezer Delgado walked, but Beer then induced senior Chris Minnick to ground out to end the frame.

With one out in the second inning, senior Branden Phillips singled to center field, but Clark and junior Max Meltzer both fanned.

Beer was perfect in the third, setting down Castaneda on a grounder, Mieliwocki on a pop up and Leake on a strike out.

With one out in the fourth, Minnick singled to right field, Beer’s wild pitch moved him to second base and a sacrifice by junior Matthew Shaugabay to third base, but Phillips lined to right field.

Beer fanned senior Christian Guerra to open the fifth and commenced to strike out Meltzer and Castaneda.

Beer retired the side in order in the sixth inning, getting Mieliwocki to line out to the shortstop, Phillips on a fly out and Delgado on a liner to left field.

Minnick led off the seventh with an infield hit, but Shaugabay lined to right field and Phillips bounced into a game-ending double play.

Leake had his full assortment of pitches working as he retired the side in the first inning, inducing Ledesma and Grimm to ground out and senior Scott Vinceri to fly out.

Beer grounded out to lead off the second inning and senior Anthony Russo and senior Max Meyer both fanned looking.

Another 1-2-3 frame followed as senior Nico Arredondo grounded out, senior Jaimy Blank flied out and Rees grounded out.

In the fourth, Ledesma was safe on an error, but Grimm bounced into a force out, while Vinceri flied out and Beer struck out.

Actor/director James Hong has been named Grand Marshal of Burbank On Parade scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday and traveling east along Olive Avenue from Keystone to Lomita streets.

Actor and director James Hong will be the grand marshal for this Saturday’s Burbank On Parade. (Photo Courtesy Anthony Cheng)

Hong’s entertainment career spans more than 60 years and he fits in well with this year’s Hawaiian theme “Aloha Burbank!” having appeared in several episodes of the original “Hawaii Five-0”.

He has more than 500 credits ranging from film, TV and video games. He has worked with John Wayne, Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves. Currently Hong can be seen on NBC’s hit show “The Blacklist” and has voiced characters for such productions as Disney’s “Star Wars Rebels” and DreamWorks “Kung Fu Panda” franchise.

Another celebrity appearing in the parade is 7-year-old actress Julia Butters who plays Anna-Kat on ABC’s “American Housewife”. She made her television debut at age 4 on the CBS drama “Criminal Minds”. She is the daughter of Disney animator Darrin Butters and Lorelei Butters.

The parade will feature Rep. Adam Schiff, State Sen. Anthony Portantino, Mayor Jess Talamantes, City Council members, School Board members and other local dignitaries. The colorful theme should be illustrated well by entries, including equestrian units, marching bands, like the All-City Band made up of Burbank and Burroughs high school students, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and — always a surprise — the float created by the Burbank Tournament of Roses Assn. The Wells Fargo Stagecoach, drawn by six horses, will make a gallant descent down the route.

Following the parade, there will be a Hawaiian luau party beginning at 12:30 p.m. in Joslyn Adult Center parking lot, 1301 W. Olive Ave. Polynesian dancers, musicians and fire twirler will deliver three exciting shows and the public will learn to hula. Adult contemporary artist Rat Pack Ricky Medlin will sing selections from the Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin era.

There will also be a classic car show of American and Japanese models, kids area with hands-on activities and community booths. Top parade entries will receive trophies during the awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.

Food trucks, offering everything from Maine lobster, hamburgers and melted cheese sandwiches to shaved ice and ice cream desserts, will be open beginning at 10 a.m. and staged along Griffith Park Drive and in the Joslyn parking lot. Cousins Maine Lobster will serve Maine and Connecticut lobster rolls, shrimp tacos and New England Clam Chowder. Yalla offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. For meat and fish lovers, Rushed Art Food Truck will grill up ribeye steak sandwiches, Portobello burgers and pan-seared salmon filets.

MexCocina Cafe Adds A Mexican Twist To Diner Fare

Located on Burbank Boulevard just west of Buena Vista Street, MexCocina Cafe has won over some regulars already in the short time the diner has been open.

The restaurant offers a large menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and advertises healthy and fresh fare, along with some Mexican favorites.

MexCocina Cafe’s veggie omelet. (Photo By Lisa Paredes)

With a breakfast menu of omelets, a variety of pancakes and french toast plates and good old egg and meat dishes, MexCocina has something for almost everyone. Their veggie omelet was a little overdone, but filled with fresh vegetables and stuffed with avocado and Monterey Jack cheese. After adding a generous smattering of Tapatio, which is found on every table in the joint, the omelet tasted terrific.

After trying the restaurant’s carne asada sope and chicken taco, though, I was disappointed. The carne asada was fatty and grisly and the sope shell was too hard and stale, a big no-no for sopes. The beans and the flavors of the sope tasted delicious but both the red and the green salsa, while nicely spicy, were too watery for my taste.

Sope and taco at MexCocina Cafe. (Photo By Lisa Paredes)

The chicken taco was dry. The meat was flavorful but dry. Adding salsa helped the moisture a little, but the overall effect was too dry.

However, the Mex Southwest Chicken Salad was terrific. Fresh lettuce topped with moist and very tasty grilled chicken, tomatoes, avocado, black beans, cotija cheese and a homemade chipotle ranch dressing combined for a very delicious salad.

The service is always very friendly and attentive and the bathrooms are clean. Parking in the lot can be a challenge but there’s plenty of street parking along neighboring blocks.

Although prices are not cheap, MexCocina Cafe does diner fare with a Mexican twist well. While I will continue to order my tacos and sopes from Taqueria El Tapatio on Victory, MexCocina offers some solid options for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Burbank.

Restaurant Info:  MexCocina Cafe is located at 2714 W. Burbank Blvd. Burbank, CA 91505. (818) 845-0561. MexCocina Cafe is open Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
