The authors of Growing Up in Burbank, Wes Clark and Mike McDaniel, hold an author event at the Buena Vista Library on Thursday evening, November 30, to celebrate the recent publication of their tome on life in Burbank in the 1960s and 70s.

“Burbank is at once a typical Southern California city and at the same time unique and different (Disney, Lockheed, Warner Brothers),” said Clark. “It was a great place to grow up in because everybody was talking about ‘Beautiful Downtown Burbank’ – nationwide! The place became hip – after a fashion.”

“I think it was the natural follow up to our first book Lost Burbank where we discussed the history and lore of Burbank,” added McDaniel. “This book follows with the history of our growing up years here in Burbank mixed with other people we have talked with and grew up with.”

Clark and McDaniel will present a slide show and play some videos and the room at the Buena Vista branch of the Burbank Public Library will be decorated with photos of bygone days.

“We will also have pictures of Burbank people and places from the boomer generation on the walls and some portraits from history that will be seen in public for the first time from Burbank’s history,” explained McDaniel.

“What I think is important about this new book, Growing Up in Burbank, is that it is a social history of the town during the ‘boomer’ years, the story of how life was experienced in this town, told through  recollections of the stores, the restaurants, the schools, the material culture and the recreational activities—organized and off-the-grid,” said Librarian Hubert Kozak.

“People have often remarked about the unique sense of community in Burbank, something that has existed historically and is still felt today. It doesn’t seem to be a part of the experience of those who have grown up in surrounding communities in this area. I think Wes and Mike’s book, and their enthusiasm for collecting and preserving the history of the town where they grew up, explains something about that.”

“Growing Up in Burbank during these times seems to have been an experience that people look back upon with some fondness, the experience and sense of community here defined the notion of the ‘good life’ for a whole generation of people who grew up in this town, and the recollection of that experience, the kind of historical retrospective that has become Wes and Mike’s passion, is a part of what keeps that spirit and the values it expressed alive in this community today,” Kozak added. “You can just see and feel it when all their local history followers get together for an event like this.”

Clark and McDaniel operate the Burbankia website and McDaniels also writes the “Flashback Friday” column for myBurbank.com.

“It is not lost on me that this is a pretty unique thing, and I think the city is pretty lucky to have these two guys who know and value the local history here,” Kozak continued.

“I think of other communities and towns in the surrounding area, and it is rare they have people dedicated like Wes and Mike are to chronicling the local cultural and social history of their communities. That history is just lost forever. But not in Burbank. I think of these two as local history heroes in this town.”

“Burbank was a charmed place then and we felt safe to enjoy all that Burbank offered us as youth,” McDaniel also said. “It was a source of pride to say I am from ‘Beautiful Downtown Burbank’ when people asked where you lived. Our generation will always identify with Burbank as their home town.”

“Mike and I enjoyed growing up in Burbank, especially in the 1960s and 1970s,” commented Clark. “They seemed like eras suited for the young. The youth culture was just beginning, and we felt important.”

The authors mention a love for The Wonder Years television show in their press materials. Not only because the show takes place in Burbank, but also because in the episode set during the 1972 Presidential Election, the protagonist, Kevin, is described as being sixteen, the same age as Clark and McDaniel at that time. The Wonder Years “serves as a narrative metaphor for our own lives,” said the authors.

Growing Up in Burbank at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, at the Buena Vista branch of the Burbank Public Library. The authors will sign books, which are available for purchase, at the event. Plenty of free parking is available on site.

TubaChristmas Invites Burbank to Get into the Holiday Spirit

On Sunday, December 3, ‘Merry TubaChristmas’ will hold their annual musical concert at  Hall of Liberty, located at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90068. The Hall seats 1,200 people and is free to the public. This concert has been played every holiday season for the last 41 years and is comprised of hundreds of musicians playing the tuba and the baritone/euphonium.

The event will feature numerous holiday-themed music, including Christmas carols and some Hanukah songs. Audience members are encouraged to sing along and will be treated to a visit by Santa himself. The event’s conductor, Scott Wilkinson, is in his seventh year of conducting. Wilkinson has been attending and participating in the event for 40 years. “I just love tuba,” said Wilkinson, “I love being around tuba players, they’re a fun lot, a lot of comradery, and I enjoy being a member of that family.”

TubaChristmas was created by tubist Harvey Phillips in 1974. The event was meant as a tribute to the late tuba artist and teacher, William J. Bell, who happened to be born on Christmas Day, 1902. The first TubaChristmas was held in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink in 1974.

While the event may seem big, Wilkinson, Cheryl McMillan, and a small group of people mostly made up of local Burbank residents, organize the concert. The planning phase often takes months of work and planning.  While there are TubaChristmas concerts all around the world, Wilkinson’s LA show is unique as it features high-level professionals and Hanukah-themed music.cheryl

Wilkinson also has 40 years of experience as a professional musician and has had the opportunity to be a part of ensembles such as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, I Cantori, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the Flying Karamazov Brothers, and Rakia.

Other special guests include USC Thornton School of Music Professor Jim Self, who provided music for films such as, Airplane!, Poltergeist, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, War of the Worlds, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Also playing will be The Tubadours and Self’s USC Tuba Quartet. This year marks the 6th year of the USC Quartet’s involvement and they will have a featured number at the start of the show.

As for what songs get featured in the show, Wilkinson explains that there is a basic book of music with 35 songs in it that every TubaChristmas concert uses, to ensure that any musician can play at any TubaChristmas event, no matter the location. From there, Wilkinson narrows down the setlist and curates it according to the talent he has at his disposal.

After the event, Wilkinson is always left with a feeling a gratitude. “Fun for me is seeing all of the tuba players having fun,” Wilkinson said, “I get a lot of calls from TubaChristmas players saying they can’t wait.”

For Wilkinson and others, TubaChristmas is not just a holiday event. It is also meant to provide a spark of inspiration for anyone interested in learning a musical instrument. Students who participate get a chance to sit next to and perform with high-level professionals from the LA Philharmonic. With this opportunity, Wilkinson hopes that “students will better themselves and maybe practice an extra hour.” The event is especially meaningful as it also contains one family’s three generations of musicians (Otis, Jeff, and Dylan).

If any tuba players are interested in joining the event, no matter your skill level, you are encouraged to contact Scott Wilkinson at TubaChristmasLA@gmail.com.

During the holiday season in Burbank, nothing can be certain, except for traffic around the Empire Center, the Town Center, and holiday attractions the whole family can enjoy.

As many residents know, an assortment of holiday decorations has gone up in the city, including wreaths above some of Burbank’s busiest streets. The city is just coming off of Holiday in the Park, which your go-to news source happily attended. Next up in the holiday festivities is the Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony is a special event every year. The lighting ceremony takes place on the steps of City Hall and everyone is invited. The event is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM, and will run until 6:30 PM on Saturday, December 2nd. You can read the official description of the event below:

“Join Santa and special guests on Saturday, December 2nd, for a magical night in front of Burbank City Hall.  The festivities will begin at 6:00 PM as we usher in the Sounds of the Season with performances from the RC Kickettes and The Muses from John Burroughs High School. After the ceremony guests are invited to visit with Santa, write a letter to our U.S. troops, and enjoy holiday music.”

Along with the annual tree lighting ceremony, a more popular attraction remains to be the Ice Rink that goes up every holiday season. This year, the Rink is scheduled to open December 14 and will run until January 7, 2018.

During the entirety of the event, residents of Burbank can expect fundraising events, special performances, and holiday music. You can read the official description below:

A suspect responsible for a string of armed robberies in the San Fernando Valley, including the City of Burbank, has been arrested.

Shortly after midnight on November 27, 2017, a man armed with a handgun entered a Subway restaurant, located at 531 Hollywood Way, and demanded money from the cash register. Two employees inside the restaurant saw the gun in the suspect’s waistband and gave him money out of fear.

Minutes later, the same suspect walked into a 7-Eleven convenience store located at 600 Hollywood Way. The suspect approached the clerk, tapped the barrel of the handgun on the counter and demanded money. In fear for his life, the clerk handed the suspect cash. The suspect then fled the area.

Burbank Police Detectives investigating these robberies learned the same suspect was responsible for at least two other robberies of 7-Eleven stores in the North Hollywood area. Investigators from both the Burbank Police Department and Los Angeles Police Department worked together and identified the suspect as Michael Clouse, a 37-year-old man from the State of Georgia.

On November 30, 2017, Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department saw Clouse outside of a hotel in the 11200 block of Vanowen Street, North Hollywood. Clouse was contacted by police and placed under arrest. Burbank Police Detectives then served a search warrant in a hotel room linked to Clouse, which led to the discovery of the clothing he wore in the Burbank robberies.

Clouse is currently being held on $200,000 bail and is due in court on Monday.

A Funny Thing Is Happening at the Garry Marshall Theatre

From now until New Year’s Eve, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way Happened to the Forum is playing at the Garry Marshall Theatre. If you enjoy laughing and having a great time, then you are going to want to see this Sondheim musical.

For those of you who only know the 1966 movie based on the stage production, you will be surprised how much different, for the better, this production is than the film. The big screen version is very Mel Brooksy. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mel Brooks and every movie he did, but this version is more of like an adult Disney fairy tale. I am saying this because the two male leads easily look like they could play the Prince and the villain in those G-rated features.

Before we get to Hero (Michael Thomas Grant) and the Captain (Clayton Snyder), let me tell you about the play. A Funny Thing takes place Ancient Rome and tells the story of forbidden love. Hero, is the son of wealthy parents, Senex (Kevin Symons) and Domina (Candi Milo), and he is love with a Courtesan in the house next to his that is run by Lycus (E.K. Dagenfield). Only thing is that she has been sold to a Captain who is coming to pick her up the next day. Thankfully, Hero’s slave, Pseudolus (Joey McIntyre), wants his freedom and will do anything to get it. Therefore, he comes up with a plan to get Hero and the virgin, Philia (Nicole Kaplan) together. What happens next is a comedy of errors which brilliantly comes together at the end. The whole show will leave you laughing and smiling for hours afterwards. So much so, you will want to buy a ticket when the curtain goes down to see it again.

I saw A Funny Thing with McIntyre as the lead and he plays the role with such the right stuff, it should forever change how the part should be played. In the past, Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers and Nathan Lane, have played the part and let’s be honest they can be over the top. Something that the New Kid on the Block does not do. He plays it with just the right amount of comedy without you being exhausted by his performance. In addition, you can tell that he has Broadway experience. He will be with the show until December 10th. Paul C. Vogt takes over the following week.

Grant reminds me of the living version of Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty with a voice that will sends you to sleep happy. When he sings, you listen to ever word he says. I could be saying that because in one song, he only sings one word. Anyways, he also knows how to make a funny moment even funnier with his facial expressions. This is his Garry Marshall debut and I do not think this is the last time we will see him.

Snyder plays Captain Miles Gloriosus and he reminds me of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast and Tangled’s Flynn. The rough and tumble guy with the potential of being a bad boy. When he finally makes his entrance, you will not be able to take your eyes off him because he commands the stage. There is just something so manly about him that everyone will be attracted to him.

Kaplan is a mix of Aurora and Rapunzel with the perfect of amount of innocence and nativity. Her beauty lights up the stage like Rapunzel’s hair.

Then, there are Hero’s parents who remind Fred of Wilma Flintstone, which of course is based on The Honeymooners. Together, they are in love, apart they get into trouble. The onstage couple bring a level of comedic timing that will make you chuckle whenever they are in front of you.

Dagenfield plays not one but two very different roles. His first is Lycus, a shrewd businessman who can easily be manipulated. His other role, I will leave as surprise and you will look forward to every time he comes around and around.

Ethan Cohn plays the lead slave at Senex’s house and he is the character actor that ups every moment he walks through the door. In addition, he looks beautiful in a dress, but I have said too much.

Finally, there is Vanessa Nichole, Shamicka Benn and Liz Bustle, who play several roles throughout the show. Each woman is beyond talented with every singing, dancing and number they are involved in. Nichole uses her acrobatic ability to work the pole, so much so even strippers will be jealous of her for it. I should mention, the other two women are not to shabby with their moves either.

How can I review a musical and not talk about the music? You will go home with several of the show’s tunes stuck in your head for days and even weeks to come as you would with any Sondheim production. Numbers like Comedy Tonight, Free, Lovely and That Dirty Old Man.

All of them together, equals 2-hours of live entertainment that you soon will not forget, not will you want to.

A Funny Thing on the Way to the Forum runs through December 31st with performances on Thursdays and Fridays at 8p, Saturdays at 2p and 8p and Sundays at 3p and 7:30p. Tickets are available at the box office at 4252 W Riverside Drive, calling (818) 955-8101 and online. Run to the forum now to the see the funny thing that happened.

Expectations are genuinely upbeat for the Burbank High and Burroughs girls’ water polo teams.

“I am very excited for our upcoming season,” Burroughs coach Jacob Cook said. “We have a lot of talented and experienced members returning who are well-rounded and play well together.”

Spearheading the Indians, who went 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the Pacific League with an opening-round setback in the CIF Southern Section playoffs a season ago, is senior utility Gwendolyn Turla.

An offensive threat every time Turla had the ball in her hands, she tallied a team-high 67 goals and averaged 3.5 goals per game, with 22 steals and 12 assists.

Four seniors join Turla, who had 140 shots on goal, and they include attacker Cameron Flores, attacker Alice Martinez, setter Bianca Sanchez and attacker Andrea Silva.

Ten juniors will be asked to contribute offensively and play defense and they are attacker Amy Berberyan, attacker Leann Bermudez, attacker Samantha Leano, attacker Madeline Lingad, attacker Brianna Meneses, utility Aleah Orozco, attacker Camilla Panoza, attacker Isabel Rosado, attacker Katie Vlick, goalie Isabella Erickson, and Emanuella Nathan, a sophomore, will play goalie.

The Indians are 0-1 this season after losing to San Marino 9-8 in the Burbank Tournament and will launch their league campaign on Jan. 9 when they host Crescenta Valley and will visit archrival Burbank on Jan. 16.

Burbank coach Allyson Young also thinks the Bulldogs will have a successful campaign.

Burroughs will face host Burbank on Jan. 16. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

“I expect to have a better season than last season because I have a lot of returners,” said Young, whose team went 6-18 overall and didn’t make the playoffs after finishing fifth in the league.

Young will have six returners and they include senior driver Sune Aghakian, who tossed in a team-best 49 goals and senior utility Lexi Lyneis, who had 38 tallies.

The others are senior driver Tara Goodwin, junior utility Patil Minassian, junior driver Camila Salas and junior driver Michelle Morlock.

Young said that she is counting on this group of veterans to help the other players who have less experience.

“I think they can be good leaders because they understand what it takes to play on the varsity level,” Young said.

The Bulldogs, who are 3-1 after defeating host La Salle 16-3, losing to host San Marino 6-5, then knocking off Louisville 9-7 and Torrance 8-3 in the Burbank Tournament, commence league play on Jan. 9 against Pasadena.

The remainder of the squad includes senior driver Valentina Abadjian, senior driver Angelica Perez, senior driver Melissa De La Cruz, junior goalie Suzie Misiryan, sophomore driver Sera Saahbazian, sophomore driver Sophia Brice and sophomore driver Michelle Mirzoyan.

Burroughs, Burbank Girls Basketball Ready For Strong Seasons

By Rick Assad

When the Burroughs High and Burbank girls’ basketball teams take the floor, it’s with conviction that every game is winnable.

The Indians, 17-12 and 8-4 in the Pacific League, tied for second last season, will be paced by 6-foot-4 senior center Marin Grote and 5-3 junior point guard Arianna Farias.

“Both started last year and are expected to lead the way,” said Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan, whose squad had its four-season run as the league champion snapped.

Grote, who will play volleyball for the University of Washington, averaged 9.4 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.6 blocks, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals.

Oganyan expects the Indians, who lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs, to be competitive.

“The girls have had a good summer and fall by playing a lot of good competition,” she said. “Our focus will be being tough defensively, playing really hard and competing every second.”

It won’t be easy, but Oganyan believes the Indians will be in the hunt for the league title. “League should tough,” she noted. “There are a lot good coaches and good teams.”

The Indians will play in their own tournament and then begin league action on Jan. 3 at Arcadia.

Burroughs will play at longtime rival Burbank on Jan. 19 and host the Bulldogs on Feb. 8.

The Indians are loaded with junior guards who spent time on the floor like 5-2 Ayumi DeHerrera, 5-7 Jillian Kukawski, 5-6 Camryn Lotka, 5-5 Emily Gutierrez and 5-8 Nicole Rumfola, who will also see time at forward.

“All of these girls have improved and look forward to contributing,” Oganyan said.

Senior Jenny Galvan is a 5-3 guard coming up from the junior varsity who should help off the bench.

Burbank also worked on some of the fundamentals in practice. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

There are a number of talented sophomores such as 5-5 guard A’sia Morales, who is a “slasher, a good rebounder and a great defender,” according to Oganyan and 5-6 guard Sophie Hawkins, who is “being counted on as an outside shooter,” said Oganyan.

There are also freshmen and they include 5-7 guard Dyani Del Castillo, 5-11 forward Faith Boulanger and 5-9 forward Kayla Wrobel.

“Dyani is a great athlete who is everywhere on the court and a great rebounder, while Faith will be looked at as a scorer and Kayla is a great rebounder and has good instincts for the game,” Oganyan said.

Other first-year players include 5-5 guard Liliana Gonzalez, who plays solid defense according to Oganyan and 6-0 Sydney Martin, who will play the post.

Practice makes perfect, including dribbling and driving to the hoop. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

The Bulldogs are coming off a campaign in which they posted a 14-15 overall record and 5-7 in the league, good for fifth place along with Arcadia.

The Bulldogs are 1-2 this season with losses to Saugus 52-47 and Lancaster 63-39 in the Brentwood Tournament and a win versus the Archer School for Girls 49-28 in the same tourney.

Second-year Burbank coach John Wells said “the league is fairly-well balanced and that no team should go undefeated,” and employs a four-guard offense, hoping this will add more scoring and passing.

For Burbank, which begins league action at Hoover on Jan. 3, hosts Burroughs on Jan. 19 and visits the Indians on Feb. 8, everything begins with 5-7 junior shooting guard Osanna Tirityan, who has been a force for two seasons.

“Osanna is a great scorer and a great rebounder,” said Wells of Tirityan, who averaged 16.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.1 steals. “She’s an all-around player.

Tirityan has been named to the All-CIF Division II-A second team twice and All-League first team twice.

Junior point guard Emily Monterrey, at 5-5, will also have the ball in her hands.

“Emily is a strong passer and likes to go to the basket,” Wells said.

Senior guard Sophia Jimenez is 5-5 and will add some offensive punch to the lineup as will 5-9 senior forward Kate Lynn Monterrey.

Sophomore guard Brianna Castro, at 5-4, is a very dependable shooter according to Wells.

The lone forward is 5-9 junior Sofia Aslanyan, who should contribute points and add muscle.

“Sofia is a strong offensive rebounder,” Wells said. “She has a strong post presence, but will be asked to play more than just the post.”

Coming off the bench is 5-4 junior guard Jasmine Chavez. “Jasmine is an aggressive defender and a good offensive slasher,” Wells noted.

Junior forward Dakota Cortez is 5-4 and can be counted upon to pick up stray balls.

“Dakota is a strong rebounder on both ends of the court,” Wells said. “She’ll dive for loose balls.”

Junior point guard Emily Monterrey is 5-5 and a “strong passer and goes hard to the basket,” according to Wells.

Despite being young, 5-5 freshman guard Jayla Flowers will contribute. “Jayla is an athlete and a great offensive rebounder,” Wells said. “She will be asked to guard the other team’s best player.”

Another young talent is 5-6 freshman forward Rukhshana Payind. “Rukhshana is a good offensive rebounder who runs the floor well,” Wells said.

Freshman guard Erika Montoya stands 5-3, but is still able to make herself into a crafty defender according to Wells.

Senior forward Amber Kassens is 5-5 and a relentless worker. “Amber is a good shooter and works hard on defense,” Wells said.

Junior guard Desi Gomez, at 5-3, will also be in the backcourt. “Desi is a spot-up shooter and a tough defender,” Wells said.

The rest of the squad includes 5-4 senior forward Kaylee Rivas, 5-1 senior guard Abisha Noriega and 5-6 senior forward Sabrina Feldman.

Burroughs, Burbank Boys’ Soccer Teams Looking Young, Talented

$

A year ago the Burroughs and Burbank High boys’ soccer teams were complete opposites. Burroughs won the Pacific League title and Burbank failed to win a game. But a year later, Burroughs has graduated many of its stars and Burbank has been re-energized by a number of young players who have already shown they will bring the program back up.

Burroughs

The Indians were quite good last season by going 19-5-4 and losing in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs to a fine Salesian squad.

As expected, many key players are gone. However, the Indians have a very talented young group under coach Mike Kodama that will be solid this season and perhaps great the next two years.

Sophomore Carlos Rosales is the playmaker and center midfielder who makes everyone else around him better.

Carlos Rosales

“Mainly it’s a rebuilding year, but it’s not. Our expectations are to be back to where we want to be, competing for a league title,” Kodama said. “We have a lot to learn. The work rate is outstanding. We’re getting better all the time.”

Rosales and David Gerlach, also a sophomore, figure to be key players for the program for years as both played significant minutes last season. Gerlach figures to be mostly an offensive midfielder or as a secondary striker.

The Indians have senior Sebastian Kalemkarian in goal along with junior Edgar Rodriguez.

Defensively, sophomore Carter Wells appears to be a solid center back.  He could be joined by senior captain Olin Bernal Villalpando. Senior Victor Lopez could also see time in the middle of the back line.

Junior Luis Cortez, sophomore Manny Pascual and seniors Jonathan Ortega and Xavier Iniguez also give depth to the back line. One player who played up front last season, but has looked solid as a wing back is senior Topli Petko, who at 6-foot-3, will certainly give the Indians a physical presence.

In the midfield, senior Ariel Sanchez could be paired next to Rosales, where he might take on the role of the player who runs the most as a defensive midfielder.  Senior Jake Von, sophomore Elijah DuMonde, junior Esteban Alcantar and junior Sam Hawksworth could also figure into the midfield rotation. Freshman Patrick Abarca is a name to remember as a possible future star.

In the attack, freshman Manny Gonzalez has already scored, giving hope that he has a very bright future ahead. Sophomore Kurt Nelson and junior Matthew Cardenas are others who could star up front.

Burbank

Things are looking bright for the Bulldogs a year after going 0-13-5. Former Burbank star player Gor Kirakosyan takes over for Mike Alcaraz.

After two games things are already looking brighter as Burbank opened with a win over San Marino and a 1-0 loss to traditional power La Canada.

“I’m super excited. Hopefully we get started on a positive note,” Kirakosyan said. “We have a lot of young guys. We have confidence in them. We want to turn this around and have a better season.”

Burbank discusses things over before the season opener.

Six players return from a year ago.

Junior Christian Ramos is the starting goalkeeper.

Also back, defensively is junior center back Andy Cardenas.

In the midfield, seniors Ethan Jay and Paul Won return. Senior winger Andrew Senane and senior striker Artyom Ginosyan are also back.

The rest of the team is young, but talented.

Defensively, junior Ocelotl Tellez could see time at left back. Freshmen Alex Pino and Isaiah Marsh as well as sophomore Levon Sahakyan could also see time as wing backs. Sophomore Sebastian Causarano could see time as a center back or as a defensive midfielder.

In the midfield, Burbank will look for help from senior Harout Abgaryan, sophomore Allen Arsenian and freshmen Jack Taglang and Nicholas Diaz.

Sophomore right winger Saul Uribe is another player who can offer help in the offense.

By Timothy Mably

This week, an abstract sculpture which appeared outside Ikea has been turning heads and gaining attention for its phallic shape.

Ikea reportedly commissioned the piece which is said to be part of a larger art installation coming soon. However, the furniture retailer has not commented on the design’s intent, or what to expect from the completed installation.

“I want to know what @ikeausa thinks the sculptor was intending. What was their point with this ‘piece of art?’” tweeted @AlyseCourtney7.

Based on Twitter threads, many locals agree that the statue is a bizarre and inappropriate addition to Ikea.

“They paid MONEY for this? I may not know art – but I know UGLY garbage when I see it!” tweeted @LENNONPhotos.

Although the sculpture is stirring up controversy from residents who want answers, others have taken to laughing it off.

“Really digging the lawn statue in front of the ‘biggest’ @IKEA in America. Nice going fellas,” tweeted @ArtByNateRowe.

Ikea plans to officially unveil the completed art installation next week.

Residents May Now Text to 9-1-1 for Emergencies

The Burbank Police Department has joined the new Text to 9-1-1 system in Los Angeles County.

Under the new system, mobile users in Los Angeles County now have the ability to send text messages to 9-1-1, giving hearing and speech-impaired residents, or those in situations where it is too dangerous to dial 9-1-1, a potentially lifesaving option.

“This technology is a welcomed advancement in our abilities to communicate with citizens in emergency situations, who otherwise would have been unable to call for help,” said Sergeant Derek Green, Public Information Officer for the Burbank Police Department.

The Burbank Police Department Communications Center, and most Los Angeles County dispatch centers are now equipped to receive and respond to mobile phone SMS Text to 9-1-1 messages. This service is available for use by the deaf, hard-of-hearing, or speech-impaired, and in situations where it is too dangerous to make a voice call to 9-1-1.

“Call if you can – text if you can’t” is the slogan developed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as the new technology makes its debut in the most populous county in the United States.

The Burbank Police Department would like to remind the public that although this new system is of great benefit to those who are hearing or speech-impaired, or those who are unable to call 91-1, it’s not meant to be a replacement for calling. Citizens who are able are asked to call 9-1-1 and speak directly with an operator.

Below are the FCC guidelines for how to contact 9-1-1. If you use a wireless phone or other type of mobile device, make sure to do the following in an emergency:

  • If you can, always contact 9-1-1 by making a voice call, “Call if you can – text if you can’t.”
  • If you are deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech-impaired or disabled, and Text to 9-1-1 is not available, use a TTY or telecommunications relay service, if available.
  • If you text 9-1-1 and text is not available in your area, you will receive a bounce back message advising, “Text is not available please make a voice call to 9-1-1.”
  • Location accuracy varies by carrier and should not be relied upon. Be prepared to give your location.
  • Text to 9-1-1 service will not be available if the wireless carrier cannot ascertain a location of the device sending the message.
  • Text to 9-1-1 is not available if you are roaming.
  • A text or data plan is required to place a text to 9-1-1.
  • Photos and videos cannot be sent to 9-1-1. They cannot be received at the 9-1-1 center at this time.
  • Text messages should be sent in plain language and not contain popular abbreviations (SMH, LOL, ICYMI) or emojis, which will not be recognized.
  • Text to 9-1-1 cannot be sent to more than one person. Do not send your emergency text to anyone other than 9-1-1.

Texts must be in English only. There currently is no language interpretation for text available. This is still in development.

The City of Burbank held the annual Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony on Saturday, December 2.

It was warm enough to leave the sweaters at home, the sky was clear and the crowd was excited to see Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.

Mayor Will Rogers brought candy canes for the crowd which numbered in the hundreds. Special guests included Mickey Mouse and Pluto, the Red Chair Dancers, and the Muses from John Burroughs High School.

Santa Claus arrived on the scene atop a Burbank fire truck. Mickey Mouse and Pluto also helped turn on the City Christmas tree lights.

On Sunday, December 10th, Jose Sandoval and his team, Sandoval Tacos on Wheels, will be hosting a toy drive at the Olive Recreation Center in Burbank. Residents of Burbank are encouraged to bring an unwrapped $10 toy in exchange for a taco plate.

“My whole life, I wanted to do something like this,” said Jose Sandoval, “I’m just trying my best for the kids and Burbank. I love this city, this community, and the people.” The park is located at 1111 W Olive Ave Burbank, CA 91506. Sandoval and his team will be located near Clark Ave., near field 3 and the swing set.

The City of Burbank has initiated the environmental review process for the Burbank Town Center Project by releasing the Notice of Preparation (NOP). This is the City’s first step towards preparing the project’s Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR).

As a part of that process, the City will be holding a community and EIR scoping meeting to discuss the proposed project and gather input on the scope of the Draft EIR on Wednesday, December 13, 6-8:30 p.m. in the former IKEA store at 600 N. San Fernando Blvd.

The community meeting which will include a presentation about the project will take place from 6-7 p.m. Immediately following will be the EIR scoping segment of the meeting, which will take place from 7:30-8:30 p.m., where community members will have the opportunity to comment on the Draft EIR’s scope.

The Burbank Town Center Project is a comprehensive redevelopment of the Burbank Town Center that would introduce a new mix of uses that are intended to create an integrated neighborhood environment to live, work, and play in Downtown Burbank. Under the plans, approximately 285,000 square feet of existing retail structures would be replaced with new buildings that would include:

  • 1,173 residences, including a mix of apartments and condominiums
  • a 200-room hotel
  • retail shopping
  • local restaurants
  • publicly accessible open space
  • Based on input from community members, the project revisions to date have focused on improved pedestrian connections and additional publicly accessible open space.

The Notice of Preparation (NOP) is available for review on the City’s website at: http://www.burbankca.gov/departments/community-development/planning/current-planning/burbank-town-center.  The public review and comment period for the NOP will continue through Friday, January 5, 2018. Burbank, Burroughs Boys Basketball Begin New Chapter

It was just a year ago that Burbank High had one of its greatest seasons in school history that nearly resulted in a CIF Southern Section championship. Burroughs featured a team that was built completely around multi-talented star Tristen Hull. Things have changed for both teams entering the 2017-18 season.

Burbank

The Bulldogs lost nearly everyone that played last season, led by Michael Woods, who is now at UC Merced.

While there are several returning varsity players, junior point guard Tyrese Willis was the only one who received regular playing time.

Willis has grown to 5-foot-7 and should be the team leader.

“Last year was last year. It was a different group,” Burbank coach Jamayne Potts said of the team that went 25-10. “This group has to go through the same things that the last group went through, which was they go through reps, they go through success, they learn how to win games. They go through failure and those things help you prepare to get towards CIF. We’re literally going one step at a time.”

Burbank will have just one senior on the team as Sevak Mkrtchyan (5-11) moves up from the junior varsity.

The Bulldogs have benefited by the addition of juniors Justin De Sales (6-2) and Jalen Clark (6-3), both of which transferred from Village Christian.

Coach Jamayne Potts is very optimistic about junior Xavier Davis (5-9).

Five more juniors return from last season including football stars Duncan Smith (6-4) and Erik Harutyunyan (6-1). Chance Van Hook (6-2), Luke Johnson (5-10) and Jared Pasion (5-9) also return.

Junior Angel Ibarra (6-2) and sophomores Ben Burnham (5-9) and Leo Tahmasian (6-0) move up from within the program.

Burroughs

As hard as it was to lose Hull, the Indians will be a more balanced team this season after going 13-14 a year ago. Hull is now playing at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.

“It’s a different team obviously. We lost Tristen (Hull) so we don’t have a big guy anymore. We lost eight seniors so a lot of young guys need to take that leadership over,” Burroughs coach Allan Ellis said. “I like the team. We’re more of a guard-oriented team. We push the ball and we’re scoring at a high pace. We need to focus on defensive intensity and making sure we get stops.”

Burroughs returns senior Stefon Foster (6-2), who was the starting point guard last season when he was healthy. Senior Omar Searcy (6-0) and junior Zion Bazzell (6-1) will see key roles as wings. Senior Carson Clark (6-2) is expected to see time at power forward.

The Indians have added Amir Montgomery (6-3), a transfer from Bonita High in LaVerne. He will be the Indians’ big man. Coach Allen Ellis is also high on freshman Frank Waldeck (6-2) who recently moved to Burbank from North Carolina.

Juniors Bryan Oasay (5-10), Sammy Solis (5-10) and sophomores Quinton Roberts (6-1) and Emery Goulet (6-1) will add depth for the Indians.

Burroughs, Burbank Girls Soccer Looking to Prove Themselves

A year after both Burroughs and Burbank High qualified for the CIF Southern Section girls soccer playoffs, both programs find themselves in new scenarios entering this season. Both teams were hit hard to graduation, but have the potential to do well even if both squads are young.

Burroughs

The Indians went 12-9-2 overall last season and 8-5-1 in league. Burroughs lost in a CIF Southern Section Division 4 wild card game against Alemany. They should have a strong attack led by junior midfielder Abbie Riggs and sophomore midfielder Olivia Cashman, who will support senior striker Catrina Villalpando.

“We’re a pretty young group. The league has changed after last season,” Burroughs coach Brady Riggs said. “Arcadia has lost some really good players. We’re hoping that they are not as strong. I think it will be Arcadia, CV and us. We want to have games late in the season that really matter. We’d like to be in contention for the league title. I think we have a team that can do that.”

Riggs said his team will rely on a total team effort.

“We don’t have anyone we’re expecting to carry us. We are a really good team,” he said.

Riggs noted that a number of his players also play together at the club level.

“We have a lot of continuity there, which will help us a lot,” he said.

Senior Maddy Sena is expected to hold down the defensive midfield role. Senior Emily Payne will also see time in the midfield.

Seniors Carina Sierra and Anna Kasper will lead the center of the defense. Seniors Nathalie Celio and Lali Aguilar as well as juniors Emily McHorney and Samantha Avendano will also be in the mix for playing time as well as sophomores Ava Kramer and Orla Griffen.

Senior Samantha Martinez is the starting goalkeeper and is backed up by Diana Santos.

Junior Megan Rangel-Lynch and sophomore Trinity Vournas will also lend a hand in the attack.

Freshman Lauryn Bailey could be a future star and is expected to play in either the midfield or the attack.

Burbank

The Bulldogs finished 7-10-3 overall last season and 6-5-3 in league. Burbank lost in the first round of the CIF playoffs to Brentwood.

New coach Pablo Diaz will hope to get his team back to the playoffs.

“The main thing is to build the program from scratch. I want to set the foundation for the years to come,” Diaz said. “We are definitely looking at the next couple of years. This is a building year. We are getting better every time we play and as a coach that’s what you want to see.”

In the goalie position, the Bulldogs will have Isabella Bowman and Ashley Im, a transfer from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.

Defensively, Burbank will be led by the group of Alexia Muller, Erin Trainor, Tatiana Castaneda and Alina Portillo. Mariella Castaneda and Stephanie Powers will also lend support in the back.

In the midfield, Maria Perez, Vicky Mongiarto, Isabella Silva and Jessica Rocha lead the way with help from Lulu Kapadia, Ani Akopyan and Stephanie Rea.

In the attack, Bekka Moke and Lili Partida expected to be the leaders, but will be supported by wings Dana Bibba and Anzhela Asatryan.
