Burroughs Boys Soccer Ties Crescenta Valley, 1-1

A tense Pacific League boys’ soccer match was expected and one was delivered when Burroughs High faced host Crescenta Valley on Tuesday.

When it was over each team scored a goal and with the 1-1 deadlock the Indians were assured of at least a share of the league title, something they’ve claimed in 2013 and 2014.

Burroughs (16-4-4 and 10-2-1 in league) can take home the banner outright with a triumph over rival Burbank on Thursday and the Falcons (17-3-4 and 8-1-4 in league) fall to Arcadia.

“Winning the league title is important for us,” Burroughs coach Michael Kodama said. “These are the two best teams in the league. You knew that it was going to come down to one play.”

After a scoreless opening half, the Falcons’ junior defender Tomik Baghramian kicked one into the net from five yards in the 49th minute past senior goalie Jordan Morgan, who came in with six shutouts, to make it 1-0.

The tying tally was supplied by senior defender Richard Alonzo on a header after a free kick in the 68th minute that escaped senior goalie Luis Flores.

“We trust each other,” said Alonzo, who missed the first half of league action after spraining his knee in a tournament versus Birmingham. “We never give up because we know it only takes a second to score. The game’s not over until the end.”

The first shot on goal came in the seventh minute by Burroughs senior forward Anton Prather from 10 yards.

The Falcons unloaded three shots on goal and they included a penalty kick from senior defender Alex Atanackovic from 20 yards in the 13th minute, senior midfielder Zander Bakunowski’s 15-yarder in the 15th minute and junior midfielder Dallas Kaauwai’s 10-yarder in the 17th minute.

In the 19th minute, Burroughs senior forward William Rosales had a shot on goal from 20 yards while teammate senior defender Erik Camarillo’s 20-yarder came in the 20th minute.

Crescenta Valley’s senior midfielder Anthony Dehnoushi’s 30-yard shot on goal in the 22nd minute missed, as did senior forward Henry Barkhordarian’s 20-yarder in the 23rd minute and Bakunowski’s 30-yarder in the 26th minute.

Burroughs senior midfielder Jake Lasso, who has scored 15 goals and entered the match having tallied seven with an assist over the last five matches, had a shot on goal from 20 yards in the 31st minute, while Prather’s 15-yard header in the 42nd minute also didn’t find the back of the net.

In the 34th minute, Bakunowski had a shot on goal from 25 yards and junior midfielder Kyle Quesada had a header from 10 yards in the 36th minute for the Falcons.

Prather’s 10-yard shot on goal came during injury time.

The second half opened with Baghramian’s header from 10 yards in the 42nd minute.

Rosales had a shot on goal from 10 yards in the 52nd minute and Atanackovic’s 10-yard header came in the 55th minute.

Camarillo’s 25-yard shot on goal in the 59th minute was countered by Kaauwai’s five-yarder in the 60th minute.

Barkhordarian’s 10-yarder was registered in the 63rd minute while Lasso’s 25-yard shot on goal came in the 64th minute.

A 15-yard shot on goal by Burroughs senior midfielder Cameron Kelly was struck in the 70th minute and Lasso’s 25-yarder followed a minute later.

Camarillo’s header from 10 yards in the 72nd minute was offset by a 10-yarder from Dehnoushi in the 73rd minute.

Prather’s 30-yarder in the 74th minute hit the top of the goal post and senior midfielder Sebouh Oshagan’s 10-yarder in the 77th minute missed for the Falcons.

Prather’s header from 10 yards during injury time was the final shot on goal.

Just Comedy tries a twist on standup comedy, with a debut performance on Sunday, February 12, at Two Roads Theater in Studio City.

The show is “a stand up comedy idea in a theatrical atmosphere,” explained co-founder and performer Steve Saracino, who is known to many Burbankers as a local champion for public school arts programs.

The now-retired Jordan Middle School science teacher started the Just Comedy idea with fellow comic Jaclyn Passaro “in order to avail comics the excitement and fun of performing without the worry of bringing a quota of people to the show. It allows comedy fans an opportunity to enjoy the show in a theater without any distractions.”

Many of Saracino’s former students remember his energy and enthusiasm in making seventh-grade science exciting and fun. He’s performed and honed his comedy act regularly at Flappers in Burbank and throughout Southern California in recent years.

Just Comedy “will bend the rules in comedy performances and bookings,” promises Saracino.

Refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase and there is no drink minimum.

Ryan Stout headlines the debut of Just Comedy. Stout was a regular guest on Chelsea Lately, and has appeared on CONAN, HBO’s Funny as Hell, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, and his own half-hour special, Comedy Central Presents… Ryan Stout.

Additional standup comedy will be performed by Willie Macc, Passaro, Tiana Mahalah and Saracino.

Two Roads Theater is located at 4348 Tujunga Avenue in Studio City.  Tickets are $12 and available night of show and online. The show begins at 7:00 p.m.

The JBHS Drama Pippin mainstage musical opens Friday, February 10, showcasing the singing, acting, dancing and musical talents of John Burroughs High School’s Drama, Choir and Instrumental Music students.

“It is always such a thrill to collaborate with our talented choir director, Brendan Jennings, and our amazing band director, Taylor Arakelian, on our musical productions to give a comprehensive theatre experience to our students and community,” commented JBHS Drama Director Guy Myers.

“When you add in the expert technical direction of Jon King and his tech students, we are able to continue to try to bring audiences polished and professional productions.”

“The show involves the search for fulfillment when you don’t know which way to turn, and the themes in Pippin remain as relevant today as they were when they were first written,” Myers explained. “Our dedicated cast has been up to the challenges the show has to offer and our choreographer, Jennifer Stanley, has pushed them to help them excel!”

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked and Godspell) and the book written by Roger O. Hirson, the original Broadway production of Pippin was directed by Bob Fosse. The Broadway show won five Tony Awards.

Senior Aubrianna Rohan plays Catherine and senior Sully Zack portrays Pippin.

“She is one of the players in the show that tries to show Pippin that he wants more than just an ordinary, simple life,” said Rohan. “She is one of the driving forces to push him to complete the finale! But she and Pippin end up falling in love which jeopardizes his role in the finale.”

The JBHS Drama Pippin “has been such a blast and Grandma is the easiest and also trickiest part I’ve ever played,” added senior Maddie Seiffert.

“Grandma gets to run the stage and be her own person. She’s funny and raunchy and I love her. The cast is wonderful and truly made up of all triple threats. I’m really lucky to be working with all these people.”

The JBHS Drama Pippin runs February 10 and 11 at 7:00 p.m. and February 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Burroughs High School auditorium. Admission is $10 for students, seniors and faculty and $20 for adults. Tickets are available at the show and online in advance.

National Charity League “Rocks the Kasbah”

National Charity League’s annual fundraiser “Rock the Kasbah” was a mystical, magical evening reminiscent of the movie “Casablanca” on Saturday.

The philanthropic organization is made up of mothers and their teenage daughters, called Ticktockers, who volunteer more than 10,000 hours a year raising funds or giving time to more than 30 charities in Burbank and surrounding areas.

President Shaunna Larson Raab and Chair Lynn Stepanian welcomed the more than 180 people attending.

In keeping with the exotic theme, the decorations committee had suspended silky swags from the ceiling of the Castaway Starlight Room. Tapestry carpets were rolled out at the entryway. Sections of the room were divided with lines of towering trees.

Women rocked the semi-formal dress code wearing sleek black cocktail dresses or bejeweled blouses over skinny pants.

Senior Ticktockers are, from left, Rachel Galan, Sophia Augustine, Stephanie O’Brien, Catalina Bainen and Kaitlyn Maddigan. (Photos by Joyce Rudolph)

Instead of a piano player tickling the keys with “As Time Goes By”, psychic Mystic Dylan whispered guests’ fortunes in a darkened corner. A few feet away, Ticktockers were taking turns posing at the photo booth.

Social hour was spent perusing tables filled with gift baskets for the silent auction and opportunity drawings. Dinner was followed by casino games and a poker tournament won by Amy Lawrence who will get to throw a poker party in her home.

Ticktockers from the Class of 2017 are, from left, Ava Pulvers, Kristen Reslan, Danielle Boyce, Samantha Veres and Emily Mintz-Kreyns.

Other prize-winners were president-elect Cheryl Kisob, $1,000 cash; Charlene Tabet, pearl ring and matching earrings; and Cynthia Wagner, the $100 money tree donated by sustaining members they fondly refer to as Vagabonds. Attending were Vagabond Chair Georgine Archer, Class 1989; Jane Pinkerton, Class of 1984; Kim Kaufman, past president 2013-15 and Class of 2016; and Cari Pelayo, past vice president of philanthropy and Class of 2011.

Kisob said she’ll be spending the windfall on her kids. Tabet plans to unveil her new jewelry at the Burbank Temporary Aid Center’s fundraiser on March 3. Wagner wants to learn the secret of folding the dollar bills so neatly on the tree.

Committee members are, from left, Sunny Peltier, Janine Washington, Charo Dolendo and Olivia Boyce.

Committee members included Donations Chair Sunny Peltier, Events Treasurer Janine Washington, Charo Dolendo, Olivia Boyce, Valerie Lukban, Jennifer Le’au, Juliet Barroso-Navarro and Judy Monji.

Special guests attending from the group’s charities were Barbara Howell, BTAC; Shanna Warren, Boys & Girls Club; and Romie Ruiz, Burbank YMCA.

Also attending were members of the Ticktocker Senior Class of 2017, Rachel Galan, Sophia Augustine, Stephanie O’Brien, Catalina Bainen, Kaitlyn Maddigan, Ava Pulvers, Kristen Reslan, Danielle Boyce, Samantha Veres and Emily Mintz-Kreyns.

Sustaining members, from left, are Georgine Archer, Kim Kaufman, Cari Pelayo and Jane Pinkerton.

Howell said she has grown close to the senior class. The young women have spent many hours at BTAC organizing toys in the Santa Room at the holidays as well as making sandwiches for the homeless. By the end of the evening Howell joined the Ticktockers dancing to music by DJ Blas and snapped cell-phone selfies to post on her FaceBook page.

Pablito’s Kitchen Serves Excellent Peruvian Food With An Asian Twist

Since opening in the fall of 2016, Pablito’s Kitchen has worked hard to make the transition from popular food truck to brick-and-mortar restaurant. The kitchen serves Peruvian classics with an Asian twist, focusing the menu on grilled steak, rotisserie chicken and fresh fish.

Although we have been die-hard fans of Mario’s Peruvian in Hollywood for over 20 years, excellent Lomo Saltados are not easy to come by. Choza Mama, when it was open in Burbank, was just okay.

Pablito’s Kitchen takes the saltado and puts its own unique spin on the dish. They make a standard saltado – filled with rich flavors – with grilled steak/chicken/tofu/pork/seafood, fries, onions and rice, ranging in price from $13.99 to $16.99.

pablito's kitchen

And then there’s the $19.99 Lomo a lo Pobre, a steak (“lomo”) saltado with fries, Yuca a la Huancaina, plantains, fried egg and white rice. It’s a huge plate that is easily shared by two.

The steak is grilled to perfection – charred on the outside yet still medium in the center, juicy and tender – with long-lasting flavor. Plantains are perfectly made: sweet, carmelized and crunchy on the outside. The egg comes a tiny bit runny and mixes nicely with the rice and steak. The fries soaked in the juice are a favorite taste.

The Yuca a la Huancaina is fantastic. Mild, thick yuca pieces are lightly fried and served with the spicy, creamy yellow huancaina sauce. Delicious.

Pablito’s Kitchen offers five kinds of ceviche and they are large enough to be a meal for one. We’re more used to ceviche as a smaller plate, to eat alongside a taco or sope. Pablito’s ceviche is a thing of beauty.

pablito's kitchen

Ceviche Clasico at Pablito’s Kitchen – citrusy fresh fluke is complemented by boiled and roasted Peruvian corn, sweet potato and red onion. (Photo By Lisa Paredes)

We enjoyed the Ceviche Clasico. For $14.99, we received a huge amount of marinated fluke, served with the large-grained peruvian corn made two ways – boiled and roasted. Instead of a tostada, the Peruvian corn provided the crunch and the accompaniment for the very citrusy fish. Soft sweet potatoes, red onion, fresh seaweed and sweet peppers make the plate pop.

The Pollo a la Brasa sandwich is pretty filling for $7.99. Served on a roll that’s both crusty on the outside and soft inside, the sandwich piles some of the best rotisserie chicken we’ve ever had on top of lettuce and tomato.

Topped with an aji mayo that’s mustardy and a little spicy, the sandwich is perfection. Pour on a little of the Peruvian aji verde – the creamy green sauce with heat from aji chiles – to take that next bite to another level.

Some have commented on the higher price point of the items on Pablito’s menu. But, when you look at the amount of food and the quality of the meat or fish, the higher price makes sense. Maybe offering a half portion of ceviche might be a way to get more items on the menu under $10.

We also tried the Alfajores – a small sandwich-style cookie filled with dulce de leche/caramel-type filling and rolled in powdered sugar. Four tiny cookies are $5 and taste best when allowed to warm up to room temperature.

There’s so much more on the menu we haven’t been able to try yet – loaded fries, sandwiches, amazing soups, pasta and fried rice dishes. We will be back again and again, to eat at the restaurant and for take out.

The colorful and vibrant food at Pablito’s Kitchen is matched by the festive, bright dining room and the infectious Argentinian music. The bathrooms, while clean, are still in the process of finishing work. Some parking is available in the lot to the west of the restaurant and on the street.

For fresh, high quality food and an exciting, large menu, Pablito’s Kitchen receives at Tops in Town.

Restaurant Info: Pablito’s Kitchen is located at 3803 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505.

Bike Corral Installed in a Trial Program in Front of Tony’s Darts Away

$
0
0

Looking much like a green four-door sedan parking along the 1700 block of West Magnolia, this one is noticeably different because it also contains a dozen or so neatly parked bicycles within it.  Closer examination, however, reveals it’s not an actual car at all, but a new bicycle parking corral recently installed by the City of Burbank as a trial pilot program.

Bike corrals are a new type of efficient on-street bicycle parking facility that can accommodate up to about 16 bicycles in the same area as a single vehicle parking space. They work best where sidewalks aren’t capable of accommodating additional bicycle racks and in areas with both high levels of people bicycling and demand for bicycle parking.

When placed near street corners and transit stops, bike parking corrals can also increase visibility while creating an additional buffer between people walking or waiting for the bus, and people driving.  This first pilot corral installation in Burbank was carefully and smartly planned to coincide with the busy Metro 183 bus stop on Magnolia at Reese Place.  This stretch of Magnolia is surrounded by local residential neighborhoods and many adjacent restaurants, including unique retail and specialty shops, a costume shop and tailor, a dog groomer, a pet shop, insurance agencies and a very popular local craft-brew pub.  This area can be defined as an ideal local bicycle-friendly location, one that is sure to benefit from 15 additional parking spots a bike corral creates.

More customers bicycling means stronger connections between local businesses and the surrounding neighborhoods. According to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, customers on bikes are likely to travel shorter distances and visit storefronts more frequently. Because bicyclists travel at a slower pace they are more inclined to notice small establishments than someone who is speeding by in a car.

Although this new bike corral pilot program is a recent first for Burbank, bike corrals have been around for many years and are also a successful part of LADOT’s toolkit for safer streets.  Once this program becomes implemented locally throughout Burbank, placement and ownership of the corrals will be the primary responsibility of the City of Burbank, but interested merchants will then also be able to request parking corrals for their particular area.

“The purpose of the bicycle corral pilot is to determine if there is a demand for these types of bicycle parking facilities and to see how they operate in the real world along our commercial corridors.  While bicycle corrals won’t solve all our parking problems here, providing different ways to travel to businesses on these parking-impacted streets is certainly one part of the solution.  If the test is successful, the City will consider developing criteria for installing these in other neighborhoods throughout the City,” explains David Kriske, Deputy Director of Community Development, Transportation.

If a business or commercial area thinks a bicycle corral might be appropriate for their business or businesses, or if they are interested in the outcome of this pilot parking program, they are encouraged to contact the City of Burbank Community Development Department Transportation Division and will be included on a specific interest list for further information and specific parking corral program results.

Streets that are more bicycle-friendly make it possible to get around one’s community without starting up a car or needing a full-size parking space. Bicycle-friendly business districts not only make it cheap and convenient for people who choose to bike, but they also make life easier for those who still need to drive by reducing the number of cars on the streets and auto parking spaces needed. By encouraging people to bicycle for short neighborhood trips, these types of municipal amenities, such as convenient and safe bicycle access makes their streets more pleasant and convivial places to be.

The City of Burbank continues to support active transportation alternatives and programs that benefit everyone in Burbank.  Continued municipal support of alternate ways to travel to businesses everywhere throughout the city is a fundamental part of the solution.  This is a positive step towards an integrated solution of alternative transportation choices for Burbank.

Burroughs Boys Soccer Beats Burbank to Win 10th League Title

Longtime Burroughs High boys’ soccer coach Mike Kodama enjoys it any time his team can come home with a league title.

Thursday afternoon the Indians defeated host Burbank High 4-1 to win yet another league title. But this one had something special.

“La decima,” Kodama said in Spanish.

Kodama was referring to the fact that this league title is his tenth in his tenure at Burroughs and the tenth in school history.

‘La decima’ was a term that was used to refer to Real Madrid, the most successful soccer club in the world, after it won a tenth European title in 2014.

Ironically, Burroughs won its last league title in 2014.

“It was a great team effort by everyone all season,” said Jake Lasso-Spell, who finished the regular season with 16 goals, including 13 in league. “We deserve this. We worked hard for it.”

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Burroughs (17-4-4, 11-2-1 in league) opened up an early lead and cruised to victory.

“To beat our rival on the last day and win league is special, but we’re going to get ready for the playoffs and try to win some more,” Cameron Kelly said.

Lasso-Spell got Burroughs on the board in the 21st minute. Diego Galaviz made a short-corner pass to Erik Camarillo, who found Lasso-Spell at the back post, where he was able to put a right foot on it.

Two minutes later Burroughs doubled its lead when Evan Parisi-Sanchez headed in a headed pass from Anton Prather off a throw-in from Kelly.

Burroughs took a 3-0 lead in the 61st minute when Lasso-Spell put a through ball that to Nicky Reinoso, who took a left-footed shot that found the right corner of the goal.

Kelly gave Burroughs a four-goal cushion in the 64th minute when Kelly took a long pass from Richard Alonzo and was able to get it past Burbank goalie Christian Ramos who came out to make a save.

Burbank (0-13-5, 0-11-3 in league) got on the board in the 72nd minute when Omar Ibnoujala picked up a loose ball at the edge of the goal box and took a shot that found the left corner of the net.

“It was a tough season, but there were a lot of one-goal games that it came down to,” Burbank coach Mike Alcaraz said. “The guys had a good work rate and they showed it every single game. They never backed off.”

Burroughs Girls Basketball Shuts Down Burbank

The Burroughs High girls’ basketball lost to rival Burbank on their home floor earlier this season.

Thursday night in the regular season finale, the Indians returned the favor, defeating the host Bulldogs 37-22.

“It was more of our defense and Burbank struggled in their first half shooting,” said Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan of the first half effort, which saw her team lead 23-11 at halftime.

Burroughs (18-11 overall, 8-4 in league) outplayed the Bulldogs and kept their guards and from getting into a rhythm.

“The conversation at halftime was to make the passes we needed to make, take the shots we needed to take,” Burbank coach John Wells on the changes at the half. “We had some open looks tonight, (but) they didn’t fall.”

Burbank (14-15, 5-7) attempted to rally in the second half of the game but it was too little, too late.

“They came to shut down Ani and Osanna… and myself as a coach,” said Burbank’s coach John Wells about the game. “We needed to make some adjustments and I didn’t make them, and I let this team down tonight.”

Jocelyn Rieken led the Indians in scoring with 14 points. Kamryn Cardenaz had 11 points. Marin Grote had four points and Ariana Farias had three points. A’sia Morales and Caitlyn Pentland each had two points and Angelica Davtyan had one point.

From the Bulldogs, Osanna Tirityan led the way with seven points. Emma Kerr added six points. Sarah Sarquiz, Stephanie Grigorian, and Ani Sarkisyan each had three points.

Burbank Boys Basketball Wins Thriller Over Burroughs

It was everything it should have been and then some.

Four quarters was not enough to break a deadlock between the Burbank and Burroughs high boys’ basketball teams Thursday night in the regular season finale.

In the end the host Bulldogs held on for a 57-54 overtime victory.

“This is what rivalries are about,” Burbank coach Jamayne Potts said. “The thing I like best about the Burbank and Burroughs rivalry is that it is a very friendly rivalry. It is not nasty and that’s how the game and high school athletics should be.”

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Although his team didn’t come out on the winning end, Burroughs coach Allan Ellis liked what he saw.

“That’s why I love coaching,” Ellis said. “That environment of seeing the kids go at it, I couldn’t be more proud of my guys. That was an exciting battle, one of the best games I’ve seen in a while.”

Burbank’s Thomas Clark made his only basket of the game count in a big way as he hit a three-pointer with 2:44 left in the overtime period that gave Burbank a four-point lead.

At the time it was the largest lead either team had beyond halftime, as the Bulldogs went up 55-51.

Burroughs fought hard to come back, even after star Tristen Hull fouled out with 1:31 left in overtime.

Zion Bazzell banked in a three-pointer with 44 seconds left in overtime to cut Burbank’s lead to 56-54.

Burbank’s Ben Chavez saved a last-chance opportunity for the Indians as he knocked the ball away from Stefon Foster in the final seconds and prevent a last-second shooting opportunity for Burroughs.

Both teams went back and forth all night.

The largest lead of the game was a 25-15 advantage Burroughs had with 4:34 left in the first half following a three-pointer from Omar Searcy.

Michael Woods sparked Burbank’s comeback with three dunks in the first half, two of which were late in the second quarter. Potts said those were the only slam dunks Woods has had all season.

Burbank cut Burroughs’ lead to 28-27 at halftime.

The Indians had a chance to win in regulation but a layup attempt by Ryan Del Castillo rolled off the rim, forcing overtime.

Woods led Burbank with 20 points. Faraz Khandaker had 15 points and Chavez had nine. Cameron Sweeten had six points and Henrik Anassian and Abdullah Kobaissi each had two points.

Burroughs was led by Hull, who had 14 points. Foster had 13 points and Searcy had 11. Austin Marx had eight points and Del Castillo had four.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Orange Grove and Glenoaks, Once the Transportation Hub of Burbank

What is now the back parking lot of the Burbank Police & Fire Headquarters was once the place to be if you were going to travel to Glendale, Sun Valley, downtown Los Angeles and all places in between.

The Corner of Orange Grove and Glenoaks was the Burbank Depot for the RED CAR, the trolley system owned by Pacific Electric Railway. The Red Cars took people anywhere they needed or wanted to go in the greater Los Angeles County.

Glenoaks was the main track through Glendale and Burbank starting in the early 1900’s.

Ever wonder why Glenoaks is divided by the center greenbelt areas? Those were where the original tracks for the red car traveled between stops. The red trolleys were once a common sight amid the traffic and you could get on at the main station on Glenoaks and ride for a few cents.

But the Red Cars powered by clean electricity were overtaken by cars and the new freeway systems being built in the 1950’s.

Now with the over crowded freeways electric trolley’s are making a comeback and can be seen running in the center of the 134 Freeway and other places from L.A. to Long Beach.

But once upon a time the Red Car provided Burbankers with a way to go anywhere they needed to shop, work or play in L. A.!

Burroughs Girls Soccer Ties Rival Burbank, 2-2

By Rick Assad

For the majority of the opening half of Thursday afternoon’s Pacific League girls’ soccer match between Burbank High and host Burroughs, it was dominated by the Bulldogs.

The second half was a different matter and especially during injury time when junior forward Tatiana Mosdale evened it at 2-2 on a goal against senior goalie Isabella Palau.

“We always need to play our hardest,” Mosdale said of the rivalry between the two schools. “We were all a little nervous. I was very excited. A tie is better than a loss.”

The first time these rivals met, the Bulldogs prevailed 2-1 and had not Mosdale kicked in the tying goal in the regular-season finale, it would have been another setback for the Indians.

Burroughs junior forward Tatiana Mosdale had the match-tying goal against visiting Burbank. (Photo courtesy Janet Berlin)

Up to that point, Burbank, which finished fourth in league, held a one-goal lead on the strength of two first-half tallies from senior forward Kira Bochard.

Bochard’s shot on goal from 15 yards in the third minute against senior goalie Emily Orsatt gave the Bulldogs (6-9-3 and 6-5-3 in league) a 1-0 edge.

But it was level at 1-1 a minute later on a goal by senior forward Maddie Riggs from 10 yards off a rebound.

In the 35th minute, Bochard’s shot on goal from 10 yards made it 2-1 as Burbank took the lead at the intermission.

“We played pretty good in the first half,” said Bochard, who will play soccer and run track at the University of Montevallo in Alabama. “We created more opportunities. In the second half we mostly tried to hold on.”

Senior goalie Emily Orsatt makes a save while Kira Bochard (#11) and Nicole Winters (#27) watch. (Photo courtesy Janet Berlin)

The second half shifted in favor of the Indians, who placed third in league play and were on offense it seems the entire time against a tired Burbank defense.

“We gave them too many presents,” Burbank coach Eric Montoya said. “That second goal shouldn’t have happened. Our conditioning hurt us.”

Senior midfielder Danielle Yanez launched a shot on goal from 40 yards in the 11th minute for the Bulldogs and that was followed by shots on goal from Bochard from 25 yards in the 13th minute while sophomore midfielder Kamille Eugenio’s shot on goal from 20 yards in the 26th minute sailed too high.

The Indians (12-8-2 and 8-5-1) then had a pair of shots on goal from 20 yards by senior midfielder Mireya Gonzalez in the 28th minute and the 29th minute.

Bochard, who played in only 14 matches because of her club commitment, had four consecutive shots on goal that included a 10-yarder in the 35th minute that Orsatt made a tremendous stop on, a 10-yarder in the 35th minute that made it 2-1, a 10-yard header in the 38th minute and a 20-yarder in injury time.

“We continued to try and play our game,” Burroughs coach Brady Riggs said of the opening half. “What they [Burbank] do, they do well. We stuck to our style of play in the second half.”

Mosdale’s shot on goal in the 48th minute from 10 yards opened the second half and Mosdale added another shot on goal from 10 yards four minutes later.

Burroughs senior midfielder Alondra Solis had a shot on goal from 20 yards in the 54th minute and Riggs had a 25-yarder sail wide left in the 61st minute.

Gonzalez’s 15-yarder in the 63rd minute was blocked and a 15-yarder by Solis in the 65th minute also failed to find the net.

The Bulldogs broke the spell briefly on sophomore forward Jessica Rocha’s 35-yard shot on goal in the 69th minute.

But Burroughs gathered itself as it had the final five shots on goal as Riggs had a 25-yarder in the 71st minute, Solis from five yards in the 72nd minute, Solis on a penalty kick from 25 yards in the 73rd minute, Gonzalez from 25 yards that soared too high in the 74th minute and the match-tying goal from Mosdale.

For Piano and Harpo Hits All the Right Notes at the Falcon Theatre

Ever since the late ’80s we have mostly known Dan Castellaneta as the voice of Homer Simpson on The Tracey Ullman Show and The Simpsons, now we are getting to see a different side of him at the Falcon Theatre in For Piano and Harpo. Castellaneta not only stars in the play, he also wrote it.

The dramedy is loosely based on the life of pianist, composer, author, comedian, and actor Oscar Levant during three important times in his life. It starts out in 1962 on The Tonight Show starring Jack Paar, during his comeback after being institutionalized at Mount Sanai Psych Ward in 1956. It also takes place in 1935, when he relocated to Hollywood and moved into Harpo Marx’s mansion without his permission. It also the time that he met his wife. The three time periods interweave into each other therefore it makes sense that the same five supporting actors (Gail Matthius, Phil Proctor, Jonathan Stark, JD Cullum, and Deb Lacusta, who is Castellaneta’s real life wife) play different people throughout his life during these different influential times.

Much of the play takes place during his time in rehab for prescription drug addiction. His roommate is Charlie (Cullum), who doesn’t talk, much like his old friend Harpo Marx. The two create a strong bond as most people do in that situation. Levant’s one-sided talks with his roommate give us an insight to why he was sent there. Something his doctor (Stark) is not successful in finding out during their group sessions. The group includes Barbara (Lacusta), an alcoholic who has hit rock bottom, Shirley (Matthius), an exhibitionist, and Sidney (Proctor), a manic depressant. Levant will fight joining them until he has a realization that explains why he is truly there.

Back in 1935, he moves in with Harpo Marx (Cullum) and although they create beautiful music together, he overstays his welcome. Levant’s obnoxiousness is what makes him star, but it also makes him hated by most. He is his own worst enemy. Eventually, he will make one out of his friend Harpo, just as he meets the love of his life.

One night, while he is out on the town, he meets June (Lacusta) and she has no interest in him. He will do everything in his power to win her over, but she resists. How long can she can resist? Not long because the two fall in love and have two girls.

Two decades later, her love for him forces her to commit her husband one last time. This isn’t his first time he has been in rehab and she wants it to be his last. Mount Sanai is using a new method and this time, hopefully, will be the last time. Not only for him, but everyone that is locked up with him.

Will this sad tale have a happy ending? You will have to see For Piano and Harpo between now and March 5th to find out. A play that is written and acted out so brilliantly, you will feel as though you are sitting in a Broadway audience, just very west of the Great White Way.

I saw this play on Friday night and yesterday when I watched The Simpsons, I gave Castellanta a standing ovation at the end of the episode. His performance left such an impression on me; I will never watch The Simpsons the same way. He wasn’t the only one who blew me away, Cullum was so spot on as Harpo, I could’ve sworn it was the silent Marx brother. The other cast members along with these two, give such fluid performances you never doubt which time they are in and whom they are playing. Everything transitions so smoothly, you never question what time period they are in and that makes you adore this play as a whole even more.

Another thing that I enjoyed was learning more about several entertainers from an era I had not known much about before For Piano and Harpo. When I got home from the show, I went on the internet to learn more about them and was quite intrigued what I learned. I grew up with the Marx Brothers, but the rest are all new to me. It is nice to see something that not only leaves a positive impression on you, but also leaves you wanting to know more. For Piano and Harpo is just all of that, so run out to the Falcon Theatre and see the play before it ends its run on March 5th.

Tickets are available for the 8p performances, Wednesdays to Saturdays, and 4p on Sundays at the Falcon Theatre’s Box Office at 4252 Riverside Drive, Burbank, CA 91505 or call (818) 955-8101.

Burbank Girls Soccer Wins Wild Card Playoff Match

Burbank High star senior Kira Bochard knows that now that the CIF Southern Section playoffs have begun every game could be the last one of her career.

Tuesday afternoon Bochard came up huge for the Bulldogs in a number of ways as the Bulldogs outlasted Mayfield of Pasadena 3-1 on penalty kicks in a Division 4 wild card match at Occidental College in Eagle Rock.

The match ended in a 2-2 tie after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

“I’m going to do everything that I can to win for my team,’’ said Bochard, who has committed to play soccer and run track at the University of Montevallo in Alabama.

That included putting on the goalie gloves for the first time ever at the high school level to help save two penalty kicks in the shootout.

“PKs (penalty kicks) are a dreadful thing, even for professionals,” said Bochard, who said she last played goalie four years ago. “I just wanted to go out there and do what I could. I can’t believe I stopped a couple of those balls.”

Bochard scored Burbank’s final penalty kick in the shootout by putting the ball in the lower right corner past Mayfield goalie Isabella Taglioretti.

Burbank’s two other penalty kick goals were scored by Cynthia De La Cruz and Priscilla Romero, who both ironically also kicked the ball low into the right corner.

Bochard saved penalties from Mayfield’s Nadia O’Reilly and Michaela Gallo.

Burbank (6-9-4) will now face host Brentwood (13-3-1) in a first-round match Thursday.

Bochard scored a goal in the first half from a corner kick to give Burbank a 1-0 lead.

Mayfield (8-6-6) came back to score twice and take a 2-1 lead before a Danielle Yanez throw in found Isabella Palau at the back post, where her right-footed shot was able to tie match with 13 minutes to play.

“The momentum was great to get that second goal and get us back in it,” Palau said.

The win gives coach Eric Montoya a playoff victory for a second consecutive year.

“They came together as a team. They fought for each other on the field,” Montoya said. “I’ve got 12 seniors. I told them this could be your last game.”

Burroughs Boys Soccer Pours It On in Playoff Opener

The Burroughs High boys’ soccer team moved up its CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoff opener by a day in order to avoid the pouring rain that is forecasted for Friday.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Luckily the Indians avoided the storm, but instead created one of their own for visiting Westminster by rolling in a 7-1 victory at Memorial Field.

“The boys played really well,” Burroughs coach Mike Kodama said. “I was very pleased because they (Westminster) got their goal right away and we came back and got another to put us back in control.”

Burroughs (18-4-4) will now play Feb. 22 against the winner of the Estancia-Paso Robles game that will be played Friday in Costa Mesa.

The Indians would host Estancia should it prevail, but would travel to Paso Robles.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Burroughs opened the scoring in just the third minute as Cameron Kelly got open on the right wing and was able to create space for a wide open William Rosales, who promptly put the ball in the net past goalie Carlos Rocha.

Westminster (9-7-3) gave Burroughs a temporary scare by tying things in the sixth minute on a goal from Anthony Bello.

Burroughs regained the lead in the 11th minute when freshman Carlos Rosales was able to beat Westminster’s offside trap before passing the ball to a streaking Richard Alonzo, who practically toe poked the ball into the right corner.

The Indians added a third goal right before halftime as a long throw-in by Kelley found Carlos Rosales at the back post. Rosales performed a scissors kick shot into the goal to make it 3-1.

Burroughs then poured things on early in the second half and were able to rest most of the starters in the end.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Erik Camarillo made it 4-1 in the 46th minute with a rifle shot on a free kick that went into the upper left corner of the goal.

Alonzo, a central defender, scored his second goal of the match in the 47th minute on an assist from Kelley who found him alone at the edge of the goal box.

Freshman David Gerlach also got into the action, scoring the first two goals of his high school career.

Gerlach scored in the 50th minute by putting home a loose ball that deflected off a Westminster defender.

But his second goal, which came in the 55th minute, was one to remember. With his back to the goal, Gerlach flicked a header on a long pass from Kelly into the upper right corner of the goal.

Kodama was glad he was able to go to his bench and liked what he saw.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

“I think the guys that came in played really well,” he said. “We didn’t miss a beat.”

Alonzo was pleased with the win, but knows there is more work to do.

“We’re expecting to see a good team,” he said of the next playoff round.” Any team that has gotten this far has to be a good team. We’re just hoping to keep this drive going.”

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Buena Vista Park

Before it became known as Johnny Carson Park, the wonderful sprawling park between St Josephs Hospital and the old NBC Studios property was known as Buena Vista Park.

It was noted for its wandering trails and its small stream and a large casting pool.

The pool quickly became the favorite hangout for young boys who like to fish and make and sail model boats.

Many great events took place at the site and it quickly became a favorite camp site for local Boy Scout troops. I remember several overnight camping outings there as a Scout in the late 1960’s.

Alas the casting Pool is gone now and the park has been totally redone. But many will remember the Scout Camps, Sail Boat regattas, learning to fish and the great family picnics. I know also that the new park is creating many fond memories for people today that will last a lifetime.
