It took seven games before the Burbank High girls’ soccer team had its first win.

Since then the Bulldogs have played with more consistency and on Wednesday hosted Burroughs which they held off 2-1 in a Pacific League match.

Burbank (3-8-2 and 3-4-2 in league) seized control 1-0 on a goal from sophomore midfielder Maria Perez from 10 yards and just under nine minutes left in the opening half.

For Perez, a transfer from Birmingham, Alabama, this was her first involvement in the rivalry.

“I just knew they were rivals,” she said. “It was pretty intense. It felt pretty good to get the win and the goal. I felt the support from the girls.”

Burbank’s lead was extended to 2-0 on a tally by senior forward Kira Bochard from 25 yards and 13 minutes remaining in the second half.

“I think that we’re finally starting to jell,” Burbank coach Eric Montoya said. “They trust each other now. I think a win like this gives us a lot of confidence for the [CIF Southern Section] playoffs, if we make it that far.”

But there was still enough time for the Indians to make a serious run and it was made even more likely when senior midfielder Maddie Riggs knocked one into the net off a rebound with 12 minutes on the clock.

On the play, junior forward Tatiana Mosdale’s shot from point-blank range hit the top of the goal and bounced downward at Riggs, who banged it home.

“We played better in the second half,” Burroughs coach Brady Riggs said. “I’m pleased with the effort, as always. I’m trying to develop soccer players here.”

What followed from this juncture was four consecutive kicks from the Bulldogs, who recently tied Crescenta Valley 3-3 and defeated Muir 10-0, was a boot from 10 yards by senior defender Melanie Tirado with 10 minutes, a blast from senior midfielder Danielle Yanez a minute later from 15 yards, a strike from sophomore midfielder Isabel Partida and Bochard’s kick with seven minutes left that senior goalie Emily Orsatt saved brilliantly.

Burroughs (10-6-1 and 6-3 in league) did have two shots during the extra time against senior goalie Nicole Winters. They came from senior midfielder Alondra Solis and Riggs.

There were no attempts from either team during the first 11 minutes until junior forward Adrianna Sarukhanyan’s kick from 20 yards and 28 minutes left that sailed too high.

Two minutes later, Burroughs junior midfielder Abbie Riggs’ shot from close range missed.

With 18 minutes left, Yanez’s penalty kick from 25 yards ventured wide left and with 12 minutes remaining, Partida’s try from 10 yards was scooped up by Orsatt.

Burbank senior forward Priscilla Romero’s 20-yard rocket with 10 minutes left was off target.

Sarukhanyan’s kick from 25 yards and seven minutes remaining didn’t find the net and her attempt two minutes later from the same distance also failed to hit the back of the net.

The second half opened with senior midfielder Mireya Gonzalez’s kick from 10 yards and 38 minutes left and Yanez’s attempt from 30 yards, one minute later.

With 34 minutes left, Mosdale had an excellent opportunity for a kick, but she passed the ball to Maddie Riggs, who had the ball blocked.

Bochard’s clever header from five yards a minute later also failed to find the goal and Sarukhanyan’s 25-yard shot with 28 minutes showing wasn’t successful.

Yanez’s throw-in landed in the box with 19 minutes left, but Orsatt grabbed it and Mosdale’s attempt with 15 minutes showing was wide left.

Purse Snatcher Snatched Up by Burbank Police

Last week,  a woman sitting inside of McDonalds, located at 2565 Hollywood Way, saw a man enter the restaurant and stole her purse. The victim’s purse was sitting next to her at the time it was taken.

The victim chased the suspect as he ran towards the exit and struggled with him in the doorway, although the suspect was able to overpower the victim and fled with her purse to a vehicle nearby. A witness obtained a partial license plate number and a description of the suspect and the getaway car.

Within a short period of time, the suspect attempted to use one of the victim’s credit cards at a nearby business.

Investigators learned the suspect’s vehicle was a rental car recently leased to a Lance MacClellan, 29, of Los Angeles, who was on probation for robbery.

On January 20, Burbank Police Investigators went to MacClellan’s residence and located the rental car. They contacted MacClellan at his apartment, where they found the victim’s driver license, social security card and several of her credit cards. MacClellan was placed under arrest for robbery.

On January 24, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed one count of robbery and one count of identity theft against MacClellan. He is currently being held in-lieu of $75,000 bail. His next court date is scheduled for February 8.

The victim’s purse has not been located, with MacClellan telling investigators he discarded the purse shortly after the robbery.

Last week we looked at the first two Seals that represented Burbank. Now the final two…

Our next City Seal took a new direction in shape and added color to the mix. The airplane received a larger part and a central place in the seal and also incorporated the look of industry. Lockheed became a huge power in the local economy and hence the planes prominent position and size. Added was a movie reel to indicate the beginning of the Media Capital of the World!

Lastly we have the current city seal which was a departure from the traditional seals that proceeded it. The shape was changed and the Air Polluting  smoke stacks of industry were removed. The Airplane remained and the Movie reel was updated to a section of film with a movie lighting fixture in the film frame. Also added was the Iconic City Hall and an over all banner with the title City Of Burbank. The sunrise and mountain motif from the second seal return in a stylized fashion.

Our City Seals offer an interesting look at the city’s history and Progress.

After trailing in the first quarter, the Burbank High boys’ basketball team took the lead on the first basket of the second quarter and never looked back, defeating visiting Hoover High 78-48 Friday evening in a Pacific League contest F.

Scoring 27 points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers from Faraz Khandaker, helped surge the Bulldogs to a commanding 38-23 halftime lead.

Having two usual starters come off the bench, Faraz Khandaker and Abdullah Kobaissi, helped to give the Bulldogs the surge they needed in the second quarter.

“I wanted each senior to have an opportunity to start,” Burbank coach Jamayne Potts said of his decision to start Henrik Anassian and Ben Chavez. “I’m comfortable with starting any of them.”

Burbank (16-6, 5-4 in league) took advantage of its opportunities to shoot from long distance, making 13 three-pointers.

“We definitely have the ability to hit the three ball,” Potts said. “We’re going to shoot a very good percentage when its open.”

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Burbank guard Henrik Anassian, who generally comes off the bench, assessed the situation.

“They were taking away the paint so we took the open three,” Anassian said.. “We take whatever was given to us.”

Ben Chavez had a spectacular night hitting three consecutive three-pointers to start the fourth quarter, Potts was able to give his younger players a chance to get into in the action.

After a group of Burbank sophomores entered the game with 3:10 left, they hit subsequently hit three more three-pointers to help extend Burbank’s lead and finish the game on a strong note.

“I have a lot of confidence in the sophomores,” says coach Potts. “The pressure is nothing new because they battle every day at practice.”

Burbank held Hoover to just six points in the fourth quarter.

Burbank was led by Michael Woods who had 15 points. Ben Chavez had 14 points, Khandaker and Kobaissi had 12 each. Luke Johnson had six points, Cameron Sweeten had five, Anassian and Chance Van Hook had three each. Erik Harutyunyan and Jared Pasion had two points each.

The Burbank Police Department Responded Saturday night to the Empire Center For shoplifting that just occurred at the Nordstroms Rack in the Center. Once they arrived on scene, police were assisted by the 911 caller who tailed the suspect until officers could take over and was able to provide a good enough description of the suspects location and clothing description for a police helicopter to spot the suspect and guide units to him as he fled.

Officers on the ground were able to subdue the suspect without incident in the east side of the complex between some parked cars.

Burroughs Bell, Chamberlain Sign Football Letters of Intent

Burroughs High running back Chance Bell and offensive linemen Jesse Chamberlain signed letters of intent to play college football Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.

Bell, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back who rushed for 2,023 yards and 27 touchdowns as a senior, signed with San Diego State University.

Chamberlain, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound three-year starter on the offensive line, signed with San Jose State after originally committing to Fresno State University.

“We’re excited about their future and feel lucky we’ve come in contact with them and thankful for what they have contributed to our program,” Burroughs coach Mike Reily said. “We’re excited to see them playing football on Saturdays.

Bell and Chamberlain mark the first time Burroughs has had a football player sign with an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision school, formerly known as Division 1, since 2009 when offensive lineman Sebastian Valenzuela signed with Washington State.

Bell committed to San Diego State back in July and stuck with his commitment.  He said he loves the area and many other factors.

“The football program, they run the ball a ton and their offense is based on running the ball and they rotate two to three running backs, so that gives me a chance to go in there and get some playing time early, possibly even as a true freshman,” Bell said. “They’ve been honest with me through the whole process. I love the coaching staff. It is a stable coaching staff that is going to be there for a while, so I liked that. Overall it is a great fit for me and my family.”

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Bell said he was offered by Boise State University just a few days ago and also received some Pacific-12 Conference interest from UC Berkeley and Washington State University.

Chamberlain spoke of making the switch to San Jose State from Fresno State, which brought in a new coaching staff when former UC Berkeley head coach Jeff Tedford was hired to take over the program.

“What I liked about San Jose was the coaching staff. That was the main thing.  I had them over for dinner a week before my official visit there,” Chamberlain said. “It was the head coach, offensive line coach, receivers coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. It was like I had known all these guys for years. I was like this is a group of guys I’d love to play for.”

Chamberlain was recruited by offensive line coach Joe Bernardi all along.

Bernardi, who played at Hart High in Newhall, is the son of former Burroughs head coach Gary Bernardi. Bernardi coached Burroughs for the 1993 season, when current Burroughs head coach Mike Reily was a senior at the school.

Joe Bernardi coached at Fresno State last season before moving over to San Jose State.

“I was waiting for Bernardi. He said he had something working out for him,” Chamberlain said. “I waited it out and then I got the word that he was going to be the offensive lineman coach at San Jose State. I said this was the best opportunity staring me in the face so I was like I better take it.”

Burbank Police announced that they have arrested three documented gang members responsible for an armed robbery at Little Caesars Pizza, located at 1009 West Alameda Avenue just before 10:00 PM on December 27, 2016.

The robbery took place Shortly after closing when two suspects approached the business and were greeted at the door by a female employee. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the employee and forced their way into the store. Once inside, the suspects demanded money from the register and before fleeing stole the employee’s purse, wallet and cell phone.

Within a short period of time, the suspects used one of the victim’s credit cards at a convenience store in Sun Valley.

On January 5, 2017, an attempt was made to purchase goods using the victim’s identity in the city of Glendale.  Glendale Police stopped the involved vehicle and found the victim’s identification and other documents inside the car, which was identified as the getaway car used in the Little Caesars robbery.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Burbank’s Toy Maker, Seaver Toys

$

In modern times people are accustomed to seeing toys made of plastic for the most part and many have fancy electronics in them with lights and sound.

Once upon a time not so long ago, toys required imagination and were a bit more sturdy.

Seaver Toys of Burbank was a company that supplied the country with the sturdy toys that young imaginations needed to go beyond, fly high, and reach places only a child’s thoughts could take them.

Located in what is now the back part of BWP on the corner of Lake and Olive Ave was the Seaver Toy Company, who’s employees produced many types of toys all out of wood! Airplanes, Cars, Buses, Trucks and a line of ride on toys were hand crafted and put together by skilled wood workers.

The nearby Burbank Lumber yard supplied all the wood for the company.

To attest to the quality of these toys you can still find many examples of their products today. I have seen them at swap meets, antique stores and especially Ebay. I as a collector own a fine example of a red airplane with black accents that suspiciously looks like a Lockheed aircraft.

To be sure you are getting the real deal Seaver had the foresight to stamp into the wood “SEAVER TOY CO. BURBANK CALIF.” This way you know it’s the real deal when you shop for one.

If you like things Burbank and enjoy antiques you would do well to have one of these local made items from a bygone era grace your home.

Muir Shrew Day Engages Eighth-Graders

Eighth-grade students at John Muir Middle School participated in the fourteenth-annual Shrew Day festivities on Thursday, February 2. Sponsored by the PTSA, Muir Shrew Day was the culmination of four weeks of English class study of William Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew for all 150 students.

Muir Shrew Day began with a shortened performance of The Taming of the Shrew, produced by Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum, a professional theatre group located in Topanga Canyon.

The students then split into groups and 15 actors from the troupe led them through Shakespearian-related workshops on juggling, fencing, scansion (metered poetry typical of the time), Elizabethan song and dance and commedia dell’arte characters (stock characters like the fool, an old man, a peasant.)

Each eighth-grader was able to rotate through three workshops in the morning before breaking for lunch. Then students enjoyed original Shakespeare-related songs played by the Shrew Band.

The two-hour student production of The Taming of the Shrew was a group effort by all eighth-grade students, several PTSA parent volunteers and eighth-grade English teachers Justin Riner, Rod Rothacher, Ted DeVirgilis, Mark Norberg and Steven Moos.

In preparation for the performance, each English class worked on one of the 17 scenes of the play during class time in the weeks preceding Muir Shrew Day, explained DeVirgilis.

“Students either acted in the scene – complete with costumes by costume/foods teacher, Donna Collier – or help to direct it,” DeVirigilis added. “Language learners and special needs students also acted in the student performance of The Taming of the Shrew.”

“The complex play, in which a domineering Petruchio ‘tames’ a shrewish (read: wild) woman, is also an opportunity for teachers to discuss how the roles of men and women have changed over the centuries,” DeVirgilis went on to say.

“Although the play has been called misogynistic by a few critics, Kate, the shrew, delivers the most powerful lines of the play: ‘My tongue will tell the anger of my heart, or else my heart, concealing it, will break. I will be free as I please in words.'”

“Students are better for analyzing and reciting the words of William Shakespeare,” he said.

“Taming of the Shrew” day at John Muir Middle School in Burbank. (Photo Courtesy Jennifer Moses)

“Students had a blast speaking the words of ‘The Bard’ and seeing their friends dressed up in Elizabethan garb,” DeVirigilis added. “Following the performance, students had a chance to ‘Win Dr. Miller’s Money’ if they could answer trivia questions on Shakespeare and Elizabethan life.”

The John Muir PTSA supplied all the funding to bring in the Will Geer professional and teaching artists.

“The eighth grade English teachers at Muir are proud that the thousands of students who have gone through our school over the past fourteen years have had a positive first experience with Shakespeare,” DeVirgilis said.

“The Taming of the Shrew is successful at Muir because the only way to truly appreciate and understand the greatest English playwright is to ‘speak the speech…trippingly on the tongue,’ as Hamlet, from another Shakespearean classic, once said.”

It didn’t take long to realize that the Pacific League contest between Glendale and Burroughs Highs was going to come down to shooting and defense.

Both teams battled back and forth the entire game before the visiting Nitros prevailed in the end, winning 59-53.

“We haven’t played well at home. They were in a 2-3 zone. We struggled with our shooting and that was why we had this result,” Burroughs coach Allen Ellis said. “We have to find a way to be consistent with our shooting. We have to be consistent with our effort and it’s not happening on a game-to-game basis. So as a coach I’m going to try a couple of different things and push them and make them more consistent with their effort.”

Burroughs (13-11, 5-7 in league) hit five three-pointers in the first half, but had just two in the second half.

Glendale (11-14, 3-9) hit six three-pointers in the first half and finished with seven for the game, led by freshman David Shamirian, who hit four three-pointers and finished with 14 points.

The Nitros went up 21-14 on Burroughs early in the second quarter on one of Shamirian’s three pointers.

Burroughs rallied by going on a 15-2 run that included two three-pointers from Austin Marx and one from Ryan Del Castillo.

Just when it looked like the Indians were going to start pulling away, Glendale rallied and actually took a 31-30 lead going into the halftime break.

Burroughs star Tristen Hull, who finished with a team-high 17 points fought hard to bring his team back.

He completed a three-point play with 3:40 to play to tie the score at 48.

Trailing by six points, Burroughs appeared to get back within striking distance as Marx, who finished with 11 points, hit a three-pointer with 59 seconds left.

But the shot was waved off due to an offensive foul under the basket.

“They hit shots and we didn’t,” Ellis said. “We’re an up-and-down shooting team and they were able to knock those shots down and we didn’t hit the big shots.”

Hunter Cutone and Del Castillo each had eight points, Omar Searcy had four, Justin Henderson three and Stefon Foster had two points.

The Burroughs High girls’ basketball team had something to prove Friday night when the Indians hosted Glendale High.

After seeing the Nitros snap their the 45-game Pacific League game win streak earlier in the season , the Indians came out looking to make a statement.

This time Burroughs got off to a fast start and cruised to an easy 52-30 victory.

“Offensively we had more confidence,” said Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan in comparison to the previous game against Glendale. “Our defensive plan wasn’t that much different.”

Burroughs (16-10 overall, 7-3 in league) played an extraordinary first half, coming away with a 26-12 lead at the end of it.

Having not played much of the first half in the previous game against Glendale, Burroughs guard Kamryn Cardenaz made a significant difference for the Indians.

“I wanted to come out early, and the rest of my teammates were all on the same page,” said Burroughs guard Kamryn Cardenaz.

Cardenaz hit three three-pointers in the first half, and gave the Indians the added confidence they were missing in the previous game.

Burroughs went into the second half with a 12-point lead.  The Indians showed they weren’t done, by going on an 18-7 run in the third quarter to help pad their lead and cruise to victory in the fourth quarter.

The Indians had their foot on the gas on the entire game and never seemed to ease off of it.

Cardenaz led the Indians in scoring with 20 points, A’sia Morales had eight points. Marin Grote had seven points and Ariana Farias added five points. Jocelyn Rieken had four points and Breana Bauer had three points. Angelia Davtyan had two points, and Jillian Kukawski had one point.

Get Out Of Town!: Universal Studios Hollywood

When The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in 2016 at neighboring Universal Studios Hollywood, just about every kid in Burbank and Southern California made the pilgrimage to check out the magical space.

After almost a year in, the Wizarding World and the California Neighbor Pass program have made Universal Studios attendance rates remain steadily high. And for Burbank residents, the 10-minute drive to the park allows for shorter visits, on weekends and after school.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter lives up to the hype. With permanently snow-covered roof tops, the village of Hogsmead is brought to life, featuring Honeydukes candy shop, the Three Broomsticks pub and Ollivanders magical wand shop.

With the purchase (approximately $50) of a special wand, aspiring wizards and witches can cast spells at specific spots throughout the World, opening a chocolate frog box or stirring a remote cauldron.

The charm of the place is infectious and a big draw for all ages. The major ride in the World, Harry Potter & The Forbidden Journey has undergone some tweaks since first opening, getting rid of the 3-D aspect that made a lot of people motion sick. It’s a terrifically fun ride and can still make those prone to motion sickness nauseous.

Three Broomsticks pub serves really delicious food. The breakfasts are pretty spectacular and the regular lunch menu offers hearty English staples like fish & chips, roast chicken and Shepard’s Pie.

Lighter fare, including fresh salads are also available. Butterbeer is sold hot, cold and frozen.

When you get tired of casting spells, there’s plenty of other rides and mini-worlds throughout the park to explore, including the Minion Mayhem ride, Jurassic Park  and the Simpsons’ Springfield. Don’t miss Lard Lad’s giant donut or The Mummy’s short but scary roller-coaster ride.

Although the $129 California Neighbor Pass program blocks out the entirety of July, first two weeks of August and most major holidays, and has shrunk to a mere 9 months instead of 12, it remains a good deal for a quick Get Out Of Town! experience. For more information on Universal Studios Hollywood, visit their website here.

Editor’s Note: While there’s always a lot going on in Burbank, myBurbank’s “Get Out Of Town!” highlights some of our favorite activities and events outside the town borders.

The Burbank Police Department has identified and arrested two suspects involved in a gang-related assault, said Sergeant Claudio Losacco in a release to the media today. Both suspects are documented gang members.

On January 27, 2017, around 9:15 PM, a male (16 years old) and female (17 years old), were confronted by four suspects near the intersection of Magnolia Blvd. and Shelton St. At least two of the suspects were armed with handguns and threatened the victims. In an effort to protect themselves, the victims ran away, but were chased down an alley by the suspects. At some point during the altercation, several gunshots were fired by the suspects. Nobody was struck by gunfire and the victims were not injured.

Burbank Police Detectives located surveillance footage which captured the incident. Investigators have identified and arrested one minor and one adult suspect, both believed to be the gunmen. The adult is Alejandro Puebla, 19, of Burbank. The minor is a male, 16, also of Burbank.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed one count of assault with a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement against Alejandro Puebla. He is being held in-lieu of $1 million bail and is due in court today. Charges against the minor are pending.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Burbank Police Detective B. Fekety at (818) 238-3210. If you wish to remain anonymous, call “LA Crime Stoppers” by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), use your smartphone by downloading the “P3 MOBILE APP,” or by using the website www.LACrimeStoppers.org.

Airport Employees and Tenants Raise Funds and Donations for Communities

Hollywood Burbank Airport staff and tenants collectively raised over $13,000 for local charities during the 2016 holiday season. The Airport’s Holiday Charity Committee, comprised of Airport staff, held luncheon fundraisers for the Pasadena Police Activities League (PAL) as part of the Airport’s annual holiday charity drive, while the Burbank Airport Firefighters Local I-61 union raised proceeds for the Disney Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. The union also collected toys for the Spark of Love Toy Drive Fund, sponsored by ABC7 and Southern California Firefighters.

At the February 6, 2017, meeting of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Commission, representatives from the Holiday Charity Committee presented a check for $7,000 to Lieutenant Tracey Ibarra and Officer Roxanne Haines of PAL. Since 1997, the PAL Center has provided programs and activities designed to enhance the educational, athletic and artistic experiences of young people in Pasadena.

In addition to the funds raised through three charity luncheons and donations from Airport staff, this year’s drive received special support from Airport Authority Commissioner Steve Madison of Pasadena; TBI Airport Management, Inc., the Airport’s management company; and Airport tenants Hudson Group Retail Specialists, Davies Skycap Services, Inc., Million Air, SP+, HSS, Atlantic Aviation and Desmond’s Studio Production Services. Metropolitan Culinary Services Burbank (MCS) donated the food and goods for the fundraising luncheons.

The Pasadena Police Activities League is the sixth recipient of the Airport’s annual Holiday Charity Committee fundraising efforts. Each year, the Airport Authority selects a charity from one of the three Authority member cities to receive donations. Past recipients include Ascencia and Glendale Youth Alliance in 2015, the Burbank Coordinating Council in 2014, the Pasadena Union Station Homeless Services in 2013, the Glendale Salvation Army in 2012 and the Burbank Temporary Aid Center in 2011.

In October 2016, the Burbank Airport Firefighters Local I-61 union sold T-shirts in-terminal and online to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness month. The union raised $6,000, with all proceeds donated to the Disney Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

In November and December 2016, the union hosted an in-terminal toy drive for the fourth annual Spark of Love Toy Drive Fund. The campaign, supported by efforts from Airport passengers and the Airport Police Department, collected over 300 new, unwrapped toys for underserved children and teenagers in the local region and helped benefit the California Community Foundation.

Colman Takes Over Burbank Football Program

His job title is certainly different, but Burbank High has hired a new head football coach that already has experience in leading the Bulldogs.

First-year math teacher Adam Colman, a 2011 graduate and former Burbank quarterback, has been selected to replace the departed Richard Broussard, who led the Bulldogs to their first CIF championship game in school history.

“It is an incredible honor and privilege to have the opportunity to coach at my alma mater,” Colman said. “I love this place and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. As for the kids, they were the main reason I applied in the first place. I’ve developed great relationships with all of them in the time I’ve been here as a teacher and assistant coach, and we’ve really turned the program into a family. That’s what it’s all about to me, keeping that family feeling.”

Colman, 23, was the junior varsity head coach last season and an assistant on varsity. He said most of the coaching staff under Broussard will return.

“Manuel Lemus, our defensive coordinator, has done an amazing job the past few years and will definitely be in charge of the defense again this year,” Colman said. “He also works on campus and has great relationships with the kids. We joked about it during the application process, but he and I were always going to be a package deal.”

Colman said he will be doing much of the offensive play calling.

“(Broussard) called the plays last year but I worked very closely with him and the plan had been for me to take over the play-calling duties this year anyway, so I’ll be in that role as well,” Colman said. “Kevin Hefner, who has been a JV head coach and offensive coordinator here in the past, will be working closely with me on the offensive side of the ball.”

As a player, Colman spent 2 ½ seasons as Burbank’s quarterback. He passed for 4,360 yards and 44 touchdowns passes with just 13 interceptions. He also had 10 career rushing touchdowns.

Colman said he hopes to keep the program at the level it has been in recent years.

“Last year was truly special, not just for the program but for the entire city,” said Colman who graduated from UCLA. “All we can do is try to be the best we can be, individually and as a team. I’m a big believer in John Wooden’s philosophy. I’ve talked to the kids a lot in the past few years about Wooden’s definition of success.”

Colman said he is looking at the big picture that goes beyond football.

“I just want these kids to grow and reach their potential, whatever that is,” he said. “I want them to learn things that will stay with them for life, to prepare them for the future and make them better men. The wins and losses will take care of themselves then.”
