Less than a week after leading Burbank High to the CIF Southern Section Division 8 championship football game, coach Richard Broussard has announced he has stepped down.
Broussard spent three seasons as the head coach after six seasons as an assistant. He compiled a 24-13 overall record and a 16-5 record in league. Burbank went 10-4 this past season.
“(This is) probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” Broussard said. “I love these kids with all of my heart and it hurt me to hurt them. I’ve also worked very hard with our staff to take this program to new heights, so I have a lot vested in Burbank football for sure. But, my wellbeing is paramount over anything and I’ve learned that this year.”
Broussard, who will also leave his teaching position at the end of the semester later this month, said he will bring with him many memories.
“I will never forget the nine rivalry games I have had the privilege to coach in,” Broussard said of the games against Burroughs. “This rivalry is like nothing I have ever seen (and) don’t think it can be duplicated anywhere else. I will also remember every player and family I had the honor to come in contact with. This community welcomed me with open arms and helped me grow in so many areas.”
Like many coaches, Broussard said the workload played a part in him making the decision to step away.
“Being one of the first people in the building and the last one to leave, does take its toll,” Broussard said. “I don’t sleep a lot and my days ranged from 12-16 hours daily. I did it to myself but I don’t leave much time for myself.”
Broussard said he has not made any decision on what he will do next.
“I truly don’t know what is next for me. I’m going to take this time to get back to being me again, decompress and see what direction is next for me,” he said. “I have always wanted to coach in college, but that has a lot to do with networking and who you know. I’m just interested in what version of myself will come out of this time in my life and what blessing will come my way as a result.”
