The seven- and eight-year-old Brownies of Girl Scout Troop 7026 of Greater Los Angeles chose to give back to their Burbank community by holding a pet food and supply drive during the month of May. The youngsters donated the items collected and a Petco gift card of $246 to the Burbank Animal Shelter on Wednesday, May 20.

“The girls had a blast,” said troop leader Toni Avalos. “The girls created fliers to pass door to door, shot a commercial for posting on social media and even partnered with Petco in Burbank to collect donations outside their store for a day.”

The girls also picked up donations from neighbors, family and friends. When they took all the donations to the Burbank Animal Shelter, the Brownies also had a tour of the facility and met some of the furry friends staying there.

The Brownies collected a bag of bunny food, 105 cans and five bags of cat food, 100 cans and six bags and four boxes of dog food, a box of doggy treats, 20 blankets, two comfort mats, a ball, two dog chew toys, five food bowls, a dog sweater, a dog collar, a dog harness, a dog leash, a cat bed and $246 towards a Petco gift card.

“I love animals and I’m happy we could help them,” commented Girl Scout Brownie Brooklynn. “It took our whole troop to gather donations, we couldn’t have done it by ourselves.”

Guests enjoyed an array of summer fashions and the chance to win wonderful prizes when the Foothill Civitan Club presented its 31st annual Fashion Show Luncheon at the Pickwick Gardens Royal Ballroom in mid-May.

President Shirley Witt thanked chairwoman Sandy Dennis, co-chair Mary Bernier and their committee for a lovely afternoon themed “It’s a Spring Fling!”

Foothill Civitan Club is part of Civitan International, which has clubs in more than 24 countries. The organization’s mission is to inspire volunteers to support community needs, with emphasis on serving people with development disabilities.

The Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Ala., conducts research in the causes of developmental disabilities and provides clinical services and programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Foothill Civitan members raise funds for local programs that help individuals with developmental challenges, such as the Burbank Center for Adults with Disabilities and Tierra Del Sol. They also support Canine Companions for Independence, high school scholarships, Salvation Army, Hands Across the Battlefield, camperships, Burbank Coordinating Council’s Holiday Baskets, Girls Ponytail Jamboree and the Burbank Humane Society.

Members and friends of the club modeled fashions from Draper’s & Damon’s in Pasadena. Sales Associate Marie Maller narrated the show while Mike Dunn provided the recorded music. Breezy summer styles on the runway included striped dresses and white or navy capris paired with lacy jackets or print tunics. Those modeling were Linda Colley, Jill Benz, Susan Fekety, Marie Dennis, Brigida Behr and Marilou Fermin.

Spunky Janet Jordan was an eloquent mistress of ceremonies, keeping the program moving at a good pace and leading the drawing of door prizes. Everyone got a kick out of model-in-training Jenna Kilgore, the 18-month-old granddaughter of club member Joni Kilgore, who unabashedly sauntered down the runway. Jenna’s mommy Angela Kilgore was beaming with pride!

Special guests attending were Larry Beaver, governor of the California District of Civitan International; and Sandie Shapiro, junior chair of the California District. Foothill Club members attending who are also Civitan California District officials were Sandy Lucas, lieutenant governor; and Dee Dee Ruhlow, district director.

Top prize winner of the day was Dana Ahern, daughter of Foothill Civitan member Marge Llanusa, who took home four passes to Sea World, four clubhouse passes to Santa Anita Park race track, a birdhouse with $100 cash, gifts cards to Granada Restaurant and AMC Theatres and a wine basket.

Nancy White won certificates to Gary Bric’s Ramp, Smoke House and San Diego Zoo. Taylor Kilgore, 11, attending with her mom Simone Kilgore, received the iPod Shuffle and $25 iTunes gift card — just what she was wishing for!

They are Alice Asmar, who paints in acrylics, oils, pen and ink and pastels; Nancy Rae, who creates Chinese brush paintings; and Tom Warburton, animator, producer, writer and designer, best known for creating the animated television series “Codename: Kids Next Door.”

Each will receive a plaque as a thank you from Family Service Agency, said Zita Lefebvre, who is co-chairing the event with Marsha Ramos.

Warburton has created an 18-foot art piece that will be displayed at the event and has donated an original work for the auction that is featured in his book.

There will be about 149 works up for auction, Lefebvre said. There will be works of artists from the Creative Arts Center and lots of photography.Brain Cell (3)

The art of Nelson De La Nuez, of Burbank, will be up for auction. His work has been categorized as an eclectic mix of contemporary, wickedly satirical, pop and surreal.

“I like the sense of humor of his paintings,” Lefebvre said.

Many local animators have donated pen and ink or colored pencil drawings. They have been very generous in donating their work for the auction, Lefebvre said.

Nickelodeon animator and producer Eric Robles, of Burbank, has donated an original piece of art to the auction.

“We also have one-of-a-kind toys donated from SpongeBob SquarePants, signed comic books and posters and art from Pen Ward, who has a hit show on Cartoon Network and lives in Burbank,” Lefebvre said.

“It was amazing how easily these people volunteered art after I told them a little bit about the art therapy program at Family Service Agency,” Lefebvre said.

“It is an amazing program to help people who have such deep pain they cannot verbalize it,” she said.

Some of those who are in the program are kids who have been sexually molested.

“They can’t talk about it and have been told not to talk about it — no body would believe it,” Lefebvre said. “As they sit and draw it during a therapy session, it gives the therapist a handle on how to move forward and treat them. It’s an unbelievable tool for the therapist to help these kids to start a healing process.”

World Empanadas opened the doors to their new location in Magnolia Park on May 5, marking a new chapter in the young Burbank restaurant’s life. Chef Matthew Hirtz continues his exciting experiments with flavor and ingredient combinations for savory and sweet empanada recipes.

We first shouted World Empanada’s praises nearly one-and-a-half years ago, just a few months after the Argentinian-style empanada and sandwich shop opened in the back of a Victory Boulevard liquor store in 2013. In the time since, the growing popularity of the restaurant and catering business has prompted the move to new digs with seating for eat-in customers.

New regular items have been added to the menu and operating hours extended, too, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Vegan and gluten-free options are available, along with breakfast burritos and empanadas and a new steak sandwich.

World Empanadas continues to provide homemade salsas and chimichurris for added moistness and flavor, including a new favorite, a creamy, spicy, green tomatillo salsa.

The Chicken Milanese sandwich continues to be a family favorite, with its scrumptious and slightly piquant creamy aioli spread. The Pinto Bean & Brown Rice, Quinoa & Lentils and Spicy Chile Con Carne are recent finds. We continue to enjoy the Crab Empanada special, dessert empanadas and the solid standbys of Beef, Spinach, Ham & Cheese and Creamy Corn.

World Empanadas makes tasty breakfast burritos, filled with eggs, bacon or chorizo, potato and cheese. Or, jump right into the day and order a burrito with one of the standard menu empanada fillings. You’ll be happy you did.

Hirtz, along with his parents Carlos and Lia, runs World Empanadas with a creative flair and familiar touch. The new Magnolia Park location also showcases a collection of yerba mate gourds and cups along with silver bombillas or straw strainers. Instead of a soda, try an Argentinian mate with your next empanada.

Restaurant Info: World Empanadas is located at 1206 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA  91506. 818-934-1820. Open Monday – Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Closed Sundays.

“The investigation found that Mr. Surrey had sexual relationships with two separate female students from approximately 2011 to 2015,” Cornils said in a statement released by the BPD.

BPD police Car Logo-2Surrey had been employed as the Assistant Technology Director for the Theater Technology Group at JBHS when the two separate relationships began.

“Multiple incidents occurred off campus with two separate former female students who were between the ages of 15 and 17 when the offenses occurred,” Cornils added.

Swift action by responding units led to a quick knock down on the fire. Although the residents were not home at the time of the fire, their poodle Coco was treated by BFD personnel and reunited with her owners.

Damage to the apartment was extensive. The residents turned to the American Red Cross for emergency housing. The cause of the blaze continues to be under investigation, though not considered suspicious and possibly accidental.

A banner season for Burroughs, in the figurative and literal sense, culminated in the selection of six Indians being recognized as All-League honorees. Seton Hall-commit Thomas Wilson was chosen as the Pacific League Player of the Year after dominating the opposition on the hill.

Fellow pitching standout Danny Bustos and shortstop Ryan Galan were named to the first team; outfielders Max DeAmicis and Anthony Bocanegra were second-team recipients; and first baseman Chris Peres earned honorable mention. Each was a senior on the team.

Thomas Wilson

Burroughs had a season for the ages going 24-5 overall and winning its first Pacific League title ever (13-1) and the first league title of any kind since the old Foothill days in 1997. The Indians accomplished many goals including sweeping Crescenta Valley, taking three out of five in the opening Easton Tournament and winning the Coach Bob National Invitational Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona with an unblemished 5-0 record.

The 24 wins are a school-record. The Indians lost in the second round of the CIF Division 2 playoffs and were unable to match the 1998 squad that advanced to the CIF quarterfinals, the farthest a Burroughs team has ever gone.

Wilson and Bustos were two dominant pitchers who both deserved the league’s top honor. Wilson earned the title of POY because of his two wins versus CV and against their ace pitcher, Brian Gadsby. Wilson finished 9-0 overall with a mind-boggling 0.57 earned run average (five earned runs allowed in 61 innings). In league, he went 5-0 with a 0.82 era.

Danny Bustos

Danny Bustos

Bustos went 9-2 overall with a 0.96 era in 80 innings pitched including a 5-0 mark in league with an astounding 0.31 era (two earned runs in 45 innings).

The pitching duo led a staff that had a season era of 1.62 overall and 1.06 in the Pacific League.

While the pitching was the backbone to success for JBHS, no one represented the team’s drive for excellence more than Galan. By far the most improved player on the team with his ability to hit consistently to all parts of the field or playing solid defense at shortstop, Galan was selected by his peers as the team’s best hitter. No greater honor than to have your peers support.

Galan batted .316 with 20 runs scored and eight RBIs overall. In league, he hit .378 with team-highs of 17 hits and 12 runs scored. As the team’s number two batter in the lineup, Galan led the Indians with seven sacrifice bunts.

Ryan Galan (far right)

Ryan Galan (far right)

DeAmicis (.351 average in league, 13 RBIs, six doubles), Bocanegra (.333 avg.) and Peres (.400 avg.) rounded out the All-League members for Burroughs.

“This team, these players went far beyond my expectations. They grew as young men. Our pitching and defense were as good as I have ever seen,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said. “Not only did we set a record for wins in a season but this team should go down as the best team in Burroughs history.”

Burroughs started nine seniors throughout the season. With plenty of talent returning and more coming up from the lower levels as well as a grizzly veteran coach leading the way, the Indians might be on top for a while in the Pacific League.

Burbank

Leading the way for the Bulldogs were first-team selections Randy Higgens and Cameron Briggs. Burbank (12-12, 7-7) finished in fourth place and advanced to the first round of the CIF Division 2 playoffs.

Higgens, a third baseman, hit .428 with an on-base percentage of .500, slugging percentage of 667, and OPS of .1167. He along with Ryan Porras were the catalysts of the team this year on the hill as well as with the bat. Porras batted .500 with an on-base percentage of .458 and was a second-team all-league selection.

Briggs batted .350 with an OPS of .801. The UC Davis-commit was reliable at shortstop and served as the team’s closer as well.

Centerfielder Alex Minnick hit .396 and was named honorable mention. All of the above players were seniors for the Bulldogs.

Cameron Briggs Randy Higgens

Tid-bits:

Sherwood was named the Coach of the Year in the Pacific League. In 2013 when Burbank tied for the league title for the first time in 22 years, Burbank coach Bob Hart should have been named the Coach of the Year but wasn’t. To this day that is the biggest farce among the coaches in the Pacific League.

Sherwood and Hart are two of the finest coaches around. Both should be recognized for their achievements at both schools. The same can be said of their softball peers- Burroughs’ Doug Nicol and Burbank’s Mike Delaney. It’s time for the parents to back off and let the coaches coach and the players play. Each coach mentioned above have proven their worth.

Egg-egg!

Family Service Agency Creates Awareness for Program

Event organizers increased awareness of an art therapy program while raising funds for it during an auction and dinner on Friday night.

It was the third art auction to benefit Family Service Agency’s Healing Arts therapy program at Cartoon Network in Burbank. Welcoming guests were the agency’s Executive Director Laurie Bleick, co-chairs Marsha Ramos and Zita Lefebvre and host Brian Miller, senior vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network and a member of the agency’s board of directors.

“Family Service is really an amazing agency and my hope is to raise awareness for the agency,” Miller said. “We’ve had a great turnout and it’s been a success!”

More than 140 artworks donated by local animators and fine artists were up for bid in the silent auction during the reception on the first floor of the Burbank animation studio. Guests headed up to the rooftop for a breathtaking view of the city and the buffet dinner of Mexican favorites like tamales and soft taco carnitas.

Three artists, who are also authors, received the Spotlight Award and signed their books. They are Alice Asmar, who paints in acrylics, oils, pen and ink and pastels; Nancy Rae, who creates Chinese brush paintings; and Tom Warburton, animator, producer, writer and designer, best known for creating the animated television series “Codename: Kids Next Door”.

Asmar was delighted to receive the Spotlight Award because she once served on the Family Service Agency’s board of directors and knew of the great work they do providing counseling to individuals and families.

“I’ve sent people over to the agency from the senior center who were having family problems,” Asmar said. “I told them ‘go over to Family Service Agency — they are great!”

Animators rarely show their work in a gallery setting, so Warburton was enthusiastic about having his work in a show alongside other artists he admires, he said.

“So to have your work up on the walls it’s really cool,” he said. “It’s great to be amongst so many other people’s artwork. In the big room now they’ve got all these people I work with and all these sketches they did and there is some pottery and just a great mix of artwork that’s raising money for this amazing charity.”

Proceeds will go to Family Service Agency’s Healing Arts therapy program that focuses on young victims of abuse, Lefebvre said.

“It is an amazing program to help people who have such deep pain they cannot verbalize it, ” she said.

The cause hit close to home with Moorpark artist Darla Marino, who signs her work with the name Darino. The art piece she had in the show was a collage made of spices and herbs. She calls it “Spiceherba”. It features a moon kissing the sun and is done in white clay, Moroccan red clay, turmeric, chalk, charcoal, peppermint, lavender, chamomile and Sedona cathedral rock sand along with handmade paper from Nepal.

“I started out in my garage doing paintings not knowing that I would later be diagnosed with bipolar and art is pretty much the only reason why I’m here because I was able to get it out and express myself when I didn’t know what was happening to me,” Marino said.

“And so this the Family Service Agency healing arts program hits home and it means so much to me to be a part of this. I’m so happy to be here and to be here with my daughter Stephanie. We are surrounded by memories of her childhood — Codename (Kids Next Door) — it’s perfect. This is a night I will always remember.”

When Marino first started painting, she said, her work was very dark. She wouldn’t show it to people and when she did, people told her they were worried about her.

“And now her work is very positive and inspiring,” said her daughter Stephanie Marino, 19. “You can see and feel her emotions and her journey through the art.”

Doing art on a daily basis is therapeutic, Darla Marino said.

“It helps you heal and be able to deal with life’s stresses and go on, and on and on, and be semi-normal,” she said. “So art is everything to me.”

Burbank and Burroughs Softball Dominate All-League Selections

Burbank and Burroughs have been the two most dominant softball programs in the Pacific League over the last six seasons. The Lady Bulldogs have won three straight league titles (2013, 2014, 2015) and Burroughs has won four during that span (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015).

This year the two teams led by their fantastic coaches shared the league title in fitting fashion. Both squads reached the second round of the CIF Division 3 Playoffs only to suffer heartbreaking defeats in the same manner (walk-off) and by the same score (4-3).

Caitlyn Brooks

Caitlyn Brooks

One defeat won’t define their season but rather a season of success including 23 wins by Burroughs and 21 victories by Burbank. In the end, 14 players (seven from each school) were recently recognized for their outstanding play in the Pacific League.

Leading the way one final time is the University of Notre Dame-bound pitcher Caitlyn Brooks of Burbank. For the third consecutive year, Brooks was named the Pacific League Player of the Year.

The most dominant pitcher to come through the city of Burbank in many, many years leaves behind a legacy where she finished her career with 82 wins, more than 1,000 strikeouts, and a batting average of .481. She was as good at the plate as she was in the circle.

This season Brooks hit .461 and had a record of 18-5 with a 0.66 ERA, 264 strikeouts and only 18 walks.

It’s going to be fun to see Brooks next in an Irish uniform mowing down batters in the Atlantic Coast Conference. From one Notre Dame alum to a future one- “Go Irish!”

Bridgette Pisa

Bridgette Pisa

Joining Brooks on First Team from Burbank are Lily Winn, Bridgette Pisa and Isabel Frias. Winn hit .426 for her career and struck out only 16 times in her four-year varsity career. She hit .390 and played solid defense committing just two errors all season.

Pisa hit .370 for her four-year varsity career and was an excellent catcher and student of the game according to Burbank coach Mike Delaney. She hit .373 this year and had a fielding percentage of .992.

Frias, a junior, really blossomed as a player this spring hitting .417.

Jazmin Orozco (.320 avg.) and Julia Duarte (.365 avg.) were named to the Second Team. Duarte has committed to Penn University. She committed only two errors in 121 chances.

Cailey Stevenson earned honorable mention with a .319 average and led BHS in stolen bases.

Michelle Santiago, Kaitlin Okimoto and Presley Miraglia were first team recipients for the Lady Indians.

Okimoto, a junior who recently committed to Brown University, was the team’s best clutch hitter this year. She led the team in batting average at .489 and was second in hits with 34. Her reliable defense at shortstop helped fortify the infield.

Kaitlin Okimoto

Santiago ended her sterling career as a four-time Pacific League first-team honoree. She led the team this season in home runs (five) and was second in RBIs with 22. Santiago batted lead-off and set the tone each game for JBHS. She will play at Saint Peter’s University next season.

Miraglia, a freshman, finished with a 20-4 record with 119 strikeouts and led the team in RBIs with 24. She split her two head-to-head matchups with Brooks this year. Look for Miraglia to be the next great pitcher from the Pacific League.

Presley Miraglia

Presley Miraglia

Representing Burroughs on the second team were Delaney Nicol, Kailanie Oasay and Brianna Johnson. Nicol, a two-time All-League selection who will be playing for Hamilton College next year, led the team in hits (35) and runs (27) while batting .427 this season. Defensively, she was also a standout as she made only two errors in her four-year career at Burroughs.

Oasay batted .459 and played solid defense all year.  Johnson had the game-winning hit versus Burbank to give Burroughs a share of the league title. She hit .605 and scored 19 runs in a splendid sophomore campaign.

Tori Talavera was named honorable-mention for the Indians.

“This season was very satisfying. With a freshman starting pitcher and other young players at key positions we were not looked on as a league title contender,” Burroughs coach Doug Nicol said. “We thought we were, but not many others did. This team did that and more, as they brought another league title to JBHS. We are proud of that.”

Additional State Funds Boost BUSD LCAP Plan

$

Burbank Unified received new budget information from the State of California just over a week ago, notifying the district approximately $200,000 additional funds will be provided for the Supplemental Grant category of the BUSD LCAP Plan, according to school officials.

BUSD LOGO_Master File“The Supplemental Grant budget ended up being increased by about $1.6 million,” commented BUSD Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Dr. Tom Kissinger.

Originally,  the LCAP Committee Members had recommended just under $1.4 million in Supplemental Grant funds to add to existing programs for the current year.

“With a fairly quick turn-around, we needed to add additional Supplemental Grant programs and services to the recommended LCAP budget for upcoming year,” Kissinger went on to say. “None of the  current recommended programs were eliminated or decreased. In fact, many were augmented.”

“And, we were able to go back to our priority list, from April, and add back almost all of the programs that did not make it into the Plan back then.”

“In the Supplemental Grant, the only program that you will recognize as a completely new addition was the Intervention Specialist At-Risk for the secondary schools,” Kissinger added. “Some other significant additions are the number of intervention sections added to secondary academic programs, more courses offered for online credit recovery during the year and in the summer.”

“The Local Control Accountability Plan serves as a guiding document to show the Burbank Unified School District’s focus on the academic achievement and social/emotional development of the District’s students over the next three years,” said outgoing Superintendent Dr. Jan Britz in a released statement. “The LCAP builds on the eight areas of priority as identified by the State of California, and charts a visionary course to improve student achievement. Each of these eight areas provides an important component of our work and focus.”

“The LCAP includes annual goals, specific actions and services, and program expenditures,” she added. “The scope of funding included in the LCAP is noted as: Base Grant funds, Supplemental Grant funds, Federal Entitlement funds, Common Core funds, or Bond funds.”

The LCAP is evaluated annually through multiple assessments, survey results and stakeholder meetings, as guided by the Superintendent and Board of Education. Evaluation results are published and reported annually, by the LCAP Advisory Committee.

BUSD’s LCAP Committee is comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, students, employee group representatives and community members.

“The District’s LCAP was developed by stakeholders to explain how services and actions contribute to goals, demonstrate equity, and support transparency and simplicity,” added Britz. “It is our commitment to making a long term- collective investment in our students and their future. We look forward to making this plan become a reality to produce positive student outcomes.”

Last year, BUSD Board of Education approved the initial LCAP Plan which added multiple positions and programs to the school’s budget and education plan. The entire BUSD LCAP Plan can be found on the district’s website here.

The BUSD Board of Education holds a First Reading of the LCAP on June 18, 2015, at their regularly scheduled meeting. The Second Reading is planned for June 25.
