It’s rare when Burroughs and Burbank High’s girls’ basketball teams each have a player who can elevate her game and their team as well.

But this is the case as Indians’ 5-foot-10 senior power forward Davina Del Castillo, and Bulldogs’ 5-7 senior shooting guard Yazzy Sa’dullah clearly fit the bill.

Del Castillo comes off a campaign in which the four-year varsity starter was tabbed Pacific League first team after the Indians went 14-0 in league, 24-7 overall and earned a CIF Southern Section playoff berth.

Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan wants to see continued growth in her team.

“I just want to continue working hard to improve as a basketball team and as individuals throughout the season,” Oganyan said. “When it comes to league, we want to make sure we are fully prepared for every opponent and go out and compete every game to our maximum potential.”

Oganyan knows she has the right leader in Del Castillo, who will play basketball at San Diego Christian.

“We are looking for her to be a terror on defense and rebound for us, as well as score this year,” she said. “Davina really makes our team go and has improved her offensive game and has been a scorer.”

Across town, Sa’dullah, who averaged 22 points in league and 18 points overall which helped her garner co-league Most Valuable Player honors a year ago, and a spot on the CIF second team, offers the same value for Burbank coach Bruce Breeden.

“She’s a team player and a leader,” he said of Sa’dullah, who will play for the University of West Virginia next year. “She gets her teammates involved and makes us better.”

Like Oganyan, Breeden feels the same way about the season.

“Our expectation is to challenge for the league title,” Breeden said. “The league is very competitive. I think Burbank, Burroughs, Arcadia, Crescenta Valley and Glendale are greatly improved. This is the most competitive it’s been in the 10 years I’ve been here.”

Burroughs opens league play at Pasadena on January 5, while Burbank will be at Arcadia on Jan. 6.

Burroughs-

The Indians are 4-1 after placing second in the Burroughs Optimist Tournament championship game, losing to Harvard-Westlake, 38-28, while the Bulldogs, who went 18-12 and 10-4 in league for third place along with a playoff appearance last season, are 4-5 after going 2-3 in the same tourney.

Helping Del Castillo, who was named to the all-tourney squad, will be four-year varsity starter Delaney Nicol, a point guard who dropped five points versus Harvard-Westlake.

“Delaney runs the team really well and sets up scoring opportunities for others,” said Oganyan of her senior captain.

Also in the backcourt will be Brooke Radcliffe, a junior, who scored a team-best 10 points versus the Wolverines.

“Brooke is very aggressive and a great defensive player,” Oganyan said. “Her offensive game has improved and she’s a great rebounder.”

Abbey Ibarra is a junior guard with excellent defensive skills.

“Abbey is a great defensive player, aggressive and creates scoring opportunities,” Oganyan said. “Her defense has improved and so has her outside shot.”

Sienna Brown is a senior power forward/center, who was also selected to the all-tourney team.

“Sienna is a great rebounder, very athletic and a scoring threat from the outside,” Oganyan noted.

Jordan Meltzer is a versatile junior, who can play in the front and back court. “Jordan’s a scoring threat and a solid rebounder,”Oganyan offered.

Haley Wilson is a senior forward. “Haley is tough as nails, a fantastic rebounder, and is a very tough defender,” Oganyan said.

Kamryn Cardenaz is a sophomore guard. “Kamryn is a real scoring threat off the bench and a terrific rebounder,” Oganyan said.

Jocelyn Rieken is a sophomore forward. “Jocelyn plays defense well, can rebound, and she’s improved her offensive game,”Oganyan said.

This is senior guard Chloe Takeuchi’s first year on the varsity. “Chloe has a good outside shot, and is a play-maker off the dribble in the open court,” Oganyan said. “She can play anywhere on the court except center.”

Destiny Contreras is a senior guard. “This is Destiny’s first year on the varsity,” Oganyan said. “She hustles and is a tough rebounder.”

Marin Grote is a 6-3 freshman center. “Marin’s still learning the game,” Oganyan said. “She’ll be a factor defensively for us.”

Maile Tanigawa is a sophomore guard who injured her ACL, and didn’t play basketball for two years. “Because of her injury, Maile will see limited minutes this season,” Oganyan said.

Melissa Garcia is a senior guard who transferred from Alemany. “Melissa can play anywhere on the court. We could use her at guard or forward,” Oganyan said.

Burbank-

Aside from Sa’dullah, the Bulldogs are loaded with talent including senior center Anastasia Tsybaeva, who is listed at 6-6.

“Anastasia is still learning the game, and it’s her first year on the varsity,” Breeden said. “Because of her height, she can alter a game.”

Senior small forward Abby Troy will be counted on to provide points and defense. “She’s really improved and is a hard worker,” Breeden said.

Ani Temurian is a senior shooting guard, who sparkles on defense. “This is Ani’s second year on the varsity and she can hit the three-pointer,” Breeden noted.

Senior shooting guard Sabrina Rios is making her initial foray at the varsity level, and can light up a gym from distance. “Sabrina is a terrific outside shooter,” Breeden said.

Sarah Sarquiz is a sophomore small forward. “She’s tough as nails and has developed an outside shot,” Breeden said.

Ani Sarkisyan is a senior point guard. “This is her first year on the varsity, and she’s an outstanding defender,” Breeden said.

Rounding out the team will be senior guard Lenneah Pasion, senior shooting guard Caylah Ong, senior small forward Natalie Zakarian, senior small forward Marina Labeb, junior point guard Celine Shamalian, junior power forward Christina Mkrtchyan, and sophomore center Emma Kerr.

Next up for Burroughs is a trip to Hawaii for a holiday tournament and Burbank will compete in the West Coast Holiday Classic after Christmas.

IMG_4187Last week, holiday magic filled the gym at Emmanuel Evangelical Church for over 60 special needs adults served by BCR. They enjoyed an Italian dinner with their families, sang and danced to songs of the season and received presents from Santa himself.

“It’s our favorite night of the year,” said Burbank Rotary Sunrise President Beth Anderson. “Seeing the joy in the faces of BCR clients reminds me of the joy I felt as a child during Christmas.” For Burbank Noon President-Elect Jessa Freemyer, who has a developmentally challenged relative, the holiday event “is near and dear to my heart. Seeing the ecstatic faces of the people when Santa gives them their gifts really means a lot.”

IMG_4166The Gentlemen’s Octet from Burbank High was a musical highlight of the dinner, as well as perennial favorite Piya Tolani, whose spirited singing always gets BCR clients to put on their happy feet. Piya also doubles as Santa’s number one elf when it’s time to pass out the gifts.

The breakfast Rotary club and Burbank Noon Rotary have been putting on the BCR Holiday Dinners the past 20 years. For the past five years Burbank Sunrise Rotarian Mary Gilbert has been the event’s Chairperson, marshalling Santa’s Rotarian helpers to make sure that Santa has something special for every BCR client. Mary became hooked after attending her first BCR Holiday Dinner, when she saw how happy everyone was. “I’ve had a good life. I’ve wanted to give back to the community, and this is the best way to do it.”

BUSD GATE Program Builds Momentum

The Burbank Unified Board of Education and administration officials discussed the district’s Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) program at Thursday evening’s Board of Education meeting. Several parents spoke up in support of continued growth of the BUSD GATE program.

Dr. Tom Kissinger, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, presented a report on the program. He outlined elements of the 2014-15 GATE plan that includes professional development on differentiated instruction for elementary and middle school teachers funded by the LCAP.

Pull-out day programs for fourth, fifth and sixth-graders, similar to the Shakespeare Exploration GATE event held in May, continue to be held along with monthly GATE Parent Advisory Council meetings. He also highlighted plans for the 2015-16 BUSD GATE program.

Kissinger also noted testing and graduation rates of GATE students compared to the entire student population.

In years past, funding for the BUSD GATE program was limited to testing and identifying GATE students, without additional enrichment or support for those students, besides clustering the students in elementary and middle school classes. There were minimal expectations for GATE teacher training and few, if any, district events for GATE students, according to Kissinger.

GATE students in middle school were put into GATE-only science, social studies and English classes. They also could take advanced math classes such as Algebra I and Geometry, along with other high-scoring math students who were not GATE-identified. In high school, however, GATE students retain identification but take classes based on interest and ability. Many do take honors and AP courses, Kissinger noted.

With the advent of 11 curriculum specialists at each elementary school who also serve as GATE coordinators, the GATE program can now provide on-site enrichment for identified students.  Some schools are already doing this during weekly “power-hour” or specialized reading classes.

Three middle school assistant principals also administrate the GATE program at their respective schools.

Kissinger said that “a lot more involvement in parent advocacy” and that the school has a “much greater emphasis on providing higher level work that gets at the analysis of material and critical thinking skills” has propelled GATE program growth.

“Studies show that gifted children that are not supported often hit academic roadblocks in middle school and beyond,” commented Colleen Matlock, parent of a fifth-grade GATE student. “Not providing gifted children with the stimulation they need can have serious consequences besides just not meeting their potential. They can have poor social and emotional adjustment and develop anxiety and depression.”

Parent Caroline Solberg noted that at her son’s elementary school, there are programs with dedicated teachers, assistants and classrooms, servicing students identified with special needs, such English Language Learners and those receiving speech therapy. GATE students have been identified as having special needs, she said as she urged the Board of Education to do more to support the group, which totals approximately 11% of the entire student population.

“The GATE program in the last year has made tremendous progress and I’m extremely encouraged by Dr. Kissinger’s efforts and the the work he’s put forth in growing this program,” she added.

“It’s important to gauge not just the academic but the social and emotional needs of these students,” said Kissinger.

School officials and members of the Board of Education debated the challenges and ways of measuring GATE students progress and needs. They also touched on future funding of the program.

Board President Dr. Roberta Reynolds asked for information on college attendance rates for GATE student graduates, noting that the goal of the district is to prepare all students for college and career readiness.

The full discussion and complete GATE presentation can be found on the BUSD website for the Board of Education meeting of Thursday, December 18.

South Hills Church Launches “Christmas Conspiracy”

For most, Christmas is about the things. It’s about presents, stockings, trees and candy canes. For South Hills Burbank, Christmas is about true generosity, at home and abroad.

South Hills Church, a non-denominational Christian church with eight campuses throughout the country, has launched a program called “Christmas Conspiracy,” and South Hills Burbank is taking part. “Christmas Conspiracy” is a program created through the church to help reframe the concept of Christmas.Southhills 4

South Hills’ goal is to focus not on receiving, but on giving in a powerful way as an expression of faith in order to live out the church’s purpose of “loving God, loving others and loving life.”

On Sunday, December 21, each campus will work to collect as many donations as possible in order to give 100 percent of the proceeds to others in need. The proceeds from “Christmas Conspiracy” will not only benefit global ministry and relief programs, but will also benefit local Burbank charitable organizations. Last year alone, South Hills Church raised over $125,000 from all campuses combined.

Since its launch in April 2014, South Hills Burbank has become committed to supporting the Burbank community.

“I believe the church should not exist to serve itself or by viewing the church as a ‘building,’” said Dave Stewart, campus pastor at South Hills Burbank. “The church is made up of people that live in a community with other people and we should look for ways to make positive impacts in people’s lives all around us.”

Stewart is encouraging community members to take a portion of the money they might have used to purchase expendable, and even unnecessary, gifts and instead give to someone in need.

Southhills 3

South Hills Burbank sent over 200 gifts to children all over the world for their Operation Christmas Child program

“This year, my family has decided to donate money to this cause, instead of participating in what I call the annual ‘gift card exchange’ with family members. It’s a more meaningful way for us to be proactive in helping others,” Stewart said.

In addition to “Christmas Conspiracy,” the Burbank campus has launched a “one-for-one” program to give back to others by setting aside $1 for every person who walks through the church doors every week. Since April, South Hills Burbank has raised over $4,000 for local, national and international organizations that strive to do good for others.

“I want South Hills Burbank to be known by our generosity, not by our theology,” said Stewart. “We don’t want to be just another church in Burbank, because Burbank doesn’t need just another church. We want to be a different church that is connecting with different people and showing that church still has a valuable place in our everyday lives.”

This year, the donations received from the Burbank campus’ “Christmas Conspiracy” will benefit the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC), a local organization providing individuals and families, the working poor, crime victims, senior citizens and the homeless with the short-term emergency assistance they need to live with dignity. BTAC offers many programs to the community, such as groceries, transportation assistance and daily showers.

South Hills Burbank will also donate a portion of “Christmas Conspiracy” funds to the Family Services Agency, a local organization providing a holistic approach to care by focusing on counseling, preventing, educating and advocating.

“For Burbank specifically, we believe that the church shouldn’t compete with local charities and non-profits, but it’s our responsibility to come alongside them and resource them to help improve our community. As a church, we are committed to loving our community and all the people that make this city so incredible,” Stewart said.

Southhills 1

On a global scale, South Hills Church will support a variety of initiatives through “Christmas Conspiracy” funding. Donations will support providing medical help and clean water to rural areas in Africa. Last year, donations were able to help fund a water well and first-floor construction of a medical facility in the surrounding areas in Ghana. “Christmas Conspiracy” will also partner with organizations to rescue children from sex trafficking, give relief to natural disaster victims and feed children, as well as to help provide bibles to unreached cultures and plant a church in Latin America.

On a local level, South Hills Burbank will remain steadfast in its promise of always giving to those in need.

“We want to be a church that loves the community we are in with our actions, not just our words.”

Burroughs Dance Winter Performance Feels The Pulse

Members of the John Burroughs High School Dance Production, Dance Team and Dance 2 classes presented the Winter Dance Concert, Pulse, recently in the JBHS auditorium. Under the direction of Dance Director Megan Macready, the students put on a performance that showcased wide-ranging creativity and often jaw-dropping skills.

The fast-paced show brought together contemporary hip hop and classical music and engaging costumes along with choreography by students, Macready and student intern Natalie Guerro from Los Angeles Valley College.

“Our students at John Burroughs are extremely talented, this also includes our dancers,” commented Macready. “It’s important to showcase their skills and give as many opportunities to do so. The Winter Dance Concert is a prime example of how creative young minds can be.”

Sophomore Mia Hanada, a member of the JBHS Dance Team and Dance Production classes, named Wicked Game (choreographed by Maddy Aragon), Beautiful Life (choreographed by Macready) and Amour (choreographed by Bryant Angel) as some of her favorite and most challenging performances of the production.

Wicked Game set a new bar for Hanada because she had to portray a serious character and act like a couple with her partner, to convey the emotional qualities of the choreography.

“The special thing about [Beautiful Life] is that our class did not hear the music of the song until the week of the show,” said Hanada, as she discussed the contemporary ballet set to Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune.

“This made the class work extra hard and since we had no music to go with it [in the early stages], we had to watch each other while dancing, which was very challenging in the beginning of our learning process of the dance.”

Amour “challenged me as a dancer because there were so many leaps and turns one after another,” explained Hanada.

One of the most memorable and vivid performances of the evening was the Vivaldi Etude, performed by Kayla Aguila, Chloe Crenshaw and Cynthia Topalian and choreographed by Jason Coosner. Dressed in wide skirts, the colors of autumn leaves in orange, brown and yellow, the young dancers performed a creative and technically beautiful classical ballet.

The Burroughs Dance Production students closed the show with the stunning and engaging Beautiful Life, featuring Kayla Aguila, Bryant Angel, Maddy Aragon, Samantha Arriola, Emma Bailey, Faye Bosco, Grace Brodersen, Winston Browne, Lauren Butler, Dani Cool, Rose Filichia, Samantha Flores, Milano Galang, Mia Hanada, Glenn Lim, Danielle Makiling, Tianna Medina, Mackenna Meltzer, Angela Merchan, Valerie Ng, Andrew Juarez, Danielle O’Brien, Michael Sawinski, Ryan Sinton and Allison Torrico.

JBHS Dance Production will present a Spring Dance Concert in April 2015, with performances from all students in the high school dance classes.

Robbery Attempt Foiled at Target

Editor’s Note: It was incorrectly reported that Pasadena’s police helicopter was involved in the arrest when in fact it was the Glendle/Burbank joint operated helicopter. As a reader writes in: It was actually the Burbank/Glendale Police helicopter, Air-1, comprised of a Glendale Pilot and Burbank Tactical Flight Officer that handled this call and was instrumental in apprehending the suspects. We could not agree more and regret the wrong airship being identified.

Burbank police were called out to target on Christmas Eve a little after 4:00 pm for a report of an armed robbery in progress. It was also reported that three men were in front of the store fighting with store security.

Burbank/Glendale’s police helicopter.  was in the area and spotted the three individuals immediately running through the Empire parking lot in the area of Outback Steakhouse.

With police starting to arrive on scene, one suspect looked to be taken into custody by an off-duty officer who stopped a suspect by Sports Authority.

The helicopter, known as Air 1, quickly located the other two individuals who were still in the parking lot and directed officers toward them. One suspect resisted officers as he was taken into custody, with officers taking control of the situation.

The third suspect was taken into custody without any incident.

The man identified by Target security as the suspect who stole the merchandise that was later recovered, also had felony warrants on him to add to his Christmas cheer.

The Burbank Police Explorers recently sold wreath/garland for a fundraiser to help support their activities during the year.

A Burbank Police Sergeant was not only generous enough to purchase 30 wreaths and garlands to help support the young men and women who seek a future in law enforcement, but he also requested that the wreaths and garlands be donated to elderly Burbank citizens.

Therefore, 10 wreaths and garlands were taken to the Salvation Army, 10 went to the Burbank Temporary Aid, and 10 went to elderly people who were randomly chosen by the Joslyn Adult Center.

Some of the elderly receive meals on wheels, and/or are unable to leave their homes.  When the elderly people were notified of the wreath or garland delivery by the police they were ecstatic and even became emotional.

During this holiday season, needy children tend to be the focus of many donations. However, it is also important not to forget and to recognize our adult community who need our help and love as well.

What a better way to begin your vacation than to play some holiday basketball in the gorgeous state of Hawaii!

The Burroughs girls’ basketball team traveled to the big Island of Hawaii prior to Christmas to participate in the World Youth Basketball Tournament at Kealakehe High. The Indians took first place accumulating a record of 4-1 during the four day tourney.

“This was a very memorable trip and amazing experience for our girls, coaching staff, administration and parents. This was more than just the regular summer trips we take as a team for bonding and playing experience,” Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan said. “This was a trip that was a reward for the great group of girls we have on the team and how hard they have worked over the years and their continuous dedication to each other, our program, and our school.”

In addition to the basketball games, the Indians took some time to enjoy the Hawaiian experience and local culture. Here are the spectacles that the team and staff visited and enjoyed:

Paddle boarding in the lagoon

Kahaluu Beach Park – snorkeled (saw fish, sea turtles); Dolphin Quest – swam with the dolphins; went to the famous Kona Kozy Comdey and Magic Show; Kayaking and paddle boarding in the Hilton Waikoloa Hotel Lagoon (swam with sea turtles and fish); visited Hapuna Beach.

Toured the entire Island visiting the:

Parker Ranch Lands —Hamakua Coast —Rainbow Falls —Jagger Museum —Hawaii Volcano Observatory —Steam Bluffs & Crater Rim Drive —Fern Tree Jungle —Thurston Lava Tube —Kilauea Iki Crater —Volcanoes National Park —Punaluu Black Sand Beach —Kealakekua Bay Overlook —Kailua-Kona Coffee Plantations

On the final evening, the Indians went bowling for the tournament awards night. All the girls got trophies the shape of surf boards.

“I get emotional just thinking about how thankful I am that we were able to provide such a great experience for the girls that they will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Oganyan. “There is nothing better than being able to spend six days with your teammates playing basketball and spending quality time in a place like Hawaii. We are very thankful for all the people that supported us in making this happen and continue to support us every day.”

Heavy metal guitarist and songwriter Zakk Wylde visited the School of Rock Burbank as a guest professor for a Q&A session, public meet and greet and a live jam on stage with aspiring rockers from the Burbank and Los Angeles area.

More than 50 kids, ages 10 to 17, attended the Saturday workshop. Several students in the school’s performance classes, who sing or play guitar, bass, guitar drums and keyboards were able to perform popular heavy metal classics with Wylde to close out the day.

“To be able to play with Zakk was a huge honor and a privilege I am grateful for,” commented Courtney Moody, who played drums on War Pigs for the jam. “I couldn’t help but to be speechless when he said that Bill Ward would’ve been proud of me. Hearing that from Zakk influenced me greatly and pushed me to become an even better performer!”

Wylde, perhaps best known as Ozzy Osbourne’s lead guitarist for 20 years, is widely celebrated for his virtuosic metal guitar style. Since 1998, he has released seven studio albums and toured extensively with his band, Black Label Society.

“Watching and learning how Zakk approaches the song was an amazing moment,” said Ani Hesse, who sang Crazy Train with Wylde. “He gave us the power to be real.”

Max Toth who played a guitar solo with Wylde, said, “Playing that solo with my hero was the highlight of my life.”

School of Rock Burbank focuses on performance-based music education, creating a space where kids and adults can get on stage and perform familiar rock and roll music. Well-known musicians visit the school periodically to offer workshops as guest professors. School of Rock sees this program as a way to inspire young rock musicians, allowing them the opportunity to learn from and play music with professional artists.

A Sun Valley woman was arrested for being under the influence of alcohol, hit and run, and assault with a deadly weapon after an earlier altercation led police to pull over the driver of the vehicle.

Nora Casas (32) of Sun Valley was pulled over by officers after she was identified in an earlier altercation at the Carl’s Jr. at Hollywood Way and Verdugo. According to police, the suspect had struck the victim’s car while it was in the parking lot.

The victim’s car was parked at the restaurant, which does not have a drive-thru. Casas began fleeing the scene when the victim started taking photos of the suspect’s vehicle. Casas then tried twice to back her car into the victim, creating a case of assault. Casas fled the scene without exchanging information according to the report.

After officers pulled over Casas a short time later, they determined the suspect was under the influence of alcohol and arrested her for DUI, hit and run, and assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle).

The suspect’s bail was set at $30,000.00.  She is scheduled to appear in court on 12/29/14.

Beware of the Burbank Bulldogs.

Behind a spectacular performance by senior guard Yazzy Sa’dullah, Burbank cruised to its third victory in a row crushing Leuzinger, 75-45, to advance to the West Coast Holiday Classic Silver Division semifinals. The Bulldogs will play Brentwood at 4:30 p.m. today at Burroughs.

Coach Bruce Breeden speaks with his team (Photo by Dick Dornan)

“We are 3-0 in this tournament and doing what we need to do against who we are playing,” Burbank coach Bruce Breeden said. “We are hitting our stride and doing the things we need to do.”

Sa’dullah put on a show as she scored 36 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, dished out six assists and collected six steals. The West Virginia-commit also knocked down five three-pointers and made 13 of 14 free throws.

“I don’t feel pressure to carry the team,” Sa’dullah said. “I know if I play my best, nine out of 10 times we are going to win. Now that I know where I am going, there is no pressure and I’m relaxed and just playing.”

Burbank (7-5) faltered in its previous tournament losing the final two games. The Bulldogs have come together playing unselfish and tough-nosed basketball. The results have been positive as Burbank has strung together three consecutive double digit victories (Marshall, 44-33), (Douglass, 63-47) and (Leuzinger, 75-45).

“After the last tournament, we had to come back strong,” said Sa’dullah. “We didn’t really play as a team in the last tournament. But this tournament, we are on it.”

Sa’dullah set the tone early against the Olympians scoring 13 points in the first quarter including three three-point bombs that propelled Burbank to a 22-11 lead at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Sa’dullah became aggressive attacking the basket at will. She didn’t settle for the long ball but rather attacked relentlessly and got to the foul line where she made seven of eight free throws.

Leading 23-11, Sa’dullah went strong to the hoop and missed the layup only for 6-foot-6 center Anastasia Tsybaeva to follow up the miss with a put back. Tsybaeva had another put back moments later as the lead increased to 31-11.

Bulldog guard Ani Temurian made a large impact in the second quarter scoring eight points including a medium range jumper and layup for a 37-14 advantage.

On the final possession of the first half, Temurian received a skip pass from Christina Mrtchyan and drilled a long two-pointer at the buzzer in front of the Leuzinger bench to give Burbank a commanding 46-17 lead into the break.

Sa’dullah scored 20 of her 36 points in the first half while Tsybaeva added 11 and Temurian with 10.

Leuzinger came out in the third quarter on a 6-0 run to force a Burbank timeout. The Bulldogs responded when Tsybaeva made a beautiful drop step to her right and banked in a left-handed hook shot. Sa’dullah followed with a running baseline jumper and the lead ballooned back up to 50-23.

Burbank took a 59-28 lead into the final period and in full control.

Sa’dullah made her fifth three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and the lead swelled to 63-30.

Tsybaeva finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

“She’s coming along well,” said Breeden.

Temurian’s 12 points were big for the Bulldogs as she scored in double digits for the second straight contest.

“That’s two games in a row. I am very pleased with her right now,” Breeden said.

Burbank has two games remaining in the holiday tournament and then opens Pacific League action on January 6 at Arcadia.

“We are really playing well together. It’s been a work in progress,” Breeden said. “We weren’t all playing together during the summer. I think we got it together now and are heading in the right direction. We share the ball a lot and playing a lot harder.”

In other tournament action, Burroughs held off Arbor View, a solid squad from Nevada, 50-44. Jordan Meltzer scored 13 points on 3-for-3 shooting from downtown; Davina Del Castillo scored six points to go along with nine rebounds and six assists; Sienna Brown scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Brooke Radcliff had seven points and seven rebounds.

The Indians broke open a close game to lead 41-30 only for Arbor View to roar back and cut the deficit to 46-44. But Abbey Ibarra’s clutch three-pointer with three seconds left gave Burroughs an insurmountable 49-44 lead en route to the big victory. Burroughs is 3-0 in the tournament as well.

Sushi Yuzu Reigns Supreme

Having eaten sushi at fine, and not-so-fine, restaurants throughout Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and other American cities for the past 25 years, I have tasted the gamut of preparations from the truly excellent to the frighteningly awful.

Sushi Yuzu falls solidly in the absolutely excellent camp, with tender, fresh fish, exciting preparations and friendly chefs and servers. Diners can enjoy omakase or order from an extensive menu of sushi, sashimi, rolls and cooked dishes.

For a small restaurant, Sushi Yuzu seats a good number of people at tables and the bar, however prime times for lunch and dinner can result in a wait. There may be some good reasons for all the patrons.

Perhaps the warm towel to cleanse hands at the beginning of the meal is a signal that something special is about to happen.

The diner may get an inkling when the fragrant miso soups and the hot appetizer of Kani-Shiitake Age, tasty tempura shiitake mushrooms stuffed with crab and scallop, arrive.

But there can be no doubt when the first slabs of fresh sushi are placed on the plate by the chef. Sushi Yuzu is a unique, stylized and top-notch sushi spot.

Sushi Yuzu's popular namesake roll, the Yuzu, is an explosion of textures and tastes. (Photo By Lisa Paredes)

From creative and colorful concoctions like the popular Asian, Lemon and Yuzu Rolls, to the more traditional sushi and sashimi, the chefs prepare every plate with precision and an attention to texture, taste, smell and visual impression.

Every bite of fish is fresh, tender and moist. There is basically no need for soy sauce, unless for a surfeit of moisture and bit more salt.

Recently, I tried the Blue Fin Tuna. It was almost like eating a piece of melt-in-your-mouth-tender beef filet, the fish was so meaty and flavorful. Absolutely, a treat.

Sushi Yuzu also has a few vegan items on their menu, along with seasonal Hot Pots and a variety of soups. Their list of hot and cold appetizers is quite long and brings together vegetables, meats and a host of eclectic flavorings, for some exciting plates.

Earlier in 2014, Sushi Yuzu renovated a restaurant across the street at 10155 Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake, naming it Kabosu. Based on the excellent experiences we continue to have at Sushi Yuzu, we will have to give their sister restaurant a try.

Everyone in the family, young and old, raves about the food every single time we eat at Sushi Yuzu. We think new diners will too. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait to be seated, and reservations may be wise. Parking is limited but can be found within a few blocks of this Toluca Lake favorite.

Restaurant Info: Sushi Yuzu is located at 10118 Riverside Drive, Burbank, CA 91602. 818-763-8355. Sushi Yuzu is open Monday through Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and Monday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for dinner. They are also open for dinner Saturday 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Don’t Dress For Dinner Is A Comedy Feast

$

If you want to launch 2015 with a laugh, go see the Group Rep’s presentation of Don’t Dress For Dinner at the Lonny Chapman Theatre. Marc Camoletti’s belly-shaking farce, as adapted by Robin Hawdon, channels Groucho Marx’s physical comedy and Preston Sturges’ sophisticated hilarity. Director DRINA DURAZO and her superb cast have found the sweet spot where the tale stays believable enough to maintain the suspense and wild enough to keep the humor flowing.

And a swell story it is. We find ourselves in the swanky living room of a country home not far from Paris, in the company of a well-to-do, happy couple–but not necessarily with each other.

Patrick Skelton, Jennifer Laks, Patrick Burke (Photo Courtesy Drina Durazo)

Patrick Skelton, Jennifer Laks, Patrick Burke (Photo Courtesy Drina Durazo)

Bernard (PATRICK BURKE) is definitely happy that his wife Jacqueline (JULIE DAVIS) is going to visit her mother for the weekend. With the house to himself, he’s planning to spend quality time with his knockout mistress Suzanne (STEPHANIE COLET,) soon to arrive at a nearby train station. He’s even arranged for top chef Suzette (JENNIFER LAKS) to come to the house and prepare an impressive dinner for him and Jacqueline. (And they may not dress for dinner.)

Bernard’s unsuspecting pal Robert (PATRICK SKELTON) will also be dropping by for a weekend visit, and Bernard is prepared to use him as an alibi if needed.

It’s needed. Thanks to a telephone call, Jacqueline learns about the cook. So Bernard says it’s because his good friend Robert’s visiting.

Jennifer Laks, J Christopher Sloan, Patrick Burk, Patrick Skelton(Photo Courtesy Drina Durazo)

Jennifer Laks, J Christopher Sloan, Patrick Burk, Patrick Skelton(Photo Courtesy Drina Durazo)

One little wrinkle: friend Robert is also Jacqueline’s secret lover. So a hasty minute later, Jacqueline is telling Bernard that her dear mom’s under the weather, so it looks like she’ll be joining him and Robert for dinner. Isn’t that wonderful?

And now the audience’s anticipatory chuckles turn into guffaws as the actors beautifully pay off the set up of this first-rate farce. That also includes J. CHRISTOPHER SLOAN who is the cook’s husband George, with just the right mix of befuddlement and menace.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave!” Ah, but Don’t Dress For Dinner is an intricate web that lets no morsel of humor escape. Since high school, Drina has been loving, stage-managing and directing French farce (particularly that of George Feydeau.) Her love shines triumphantly in Don’t Dress for Dinner.

P.S. Fans of Boeing-Boeing will enjoy meeting the Bernard and Robert characters once again, now ten-years older and…“settled down.” Yeah, right.

Don’t Dress For Dinner continues through January 25. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Sunday Matinees at 2 p.m. Running time is 2 hours, plus one intermission. Go to Lonny Chapman Theatre, 10900 Burbank Blvd., North Hollywood, 91601. Regular admission, $25; seniors or students, $20 and groups of 10 or more, $15. For tickets or information, please visit www.thegrouprep.com or call (818) 763-5990.

Overnight Winds Cause Havoc in Burbank

$

It was a busy night for firefighters, police, public service workers and forestry crews Tuesday night/Wednesday morning as winds caused a number of problems in Burbank.

It started a little after 8pm when a power surge hit throughout the city.  It was believed that it was caused by a tree’s fronds that the wind knocked into a power feeder line at Parish and Victory.  The  palm frowns hit the street and a vehicle but were quickly put out by a Burbank fire engine. Police blocked a portion of Victory while power crews went to work.

Residents reported their light had flickered for a moment, including at the Burbank Town Center – many reported that TV boxes like DirecTV had went to the reset mode and one reported being in BevMo when the business went dark in the Empire Center.

That was just the beginning, however.

Burbank Fire soon got a call of smell of smoke coming from an outlet in the 700  block of Kenwood. Station 12 handled the problem.

Many of the signals in the city then went into ‘flash mode”, which meant that red lights flash in all directions. This happens whenever signals lose power and then it is returned.  It manually takes a person to reset them to their normal operation.

Fire also responded to the 400 block of E. magnolia to free someone from an elevator.

Burbank police then went on one task after another.

A tumble weed was reported at Victory Place and Lake, a tree branch along with other debris fell on the I-5 Freeway near Buena Vista, prompting Burbank Police to shut down two lanes of traffic while it was removed by officers with CHP eventually taking over.  Another tree fell on the Burbank off-ramp of the I-5 causing cars to reverse until police could get it closed down.

A street sign at Andover and Glenoaks became loose and hung dangerously with police calling out public service to secure the sign so it would not fall on a motorist.

One of the parkway trees in the in the 100 block of S. Beachwood came tumbling over and hit the residents house right by Burbank Fire Station 15.  There were no injuries but as a police officer on scene decribed it as a ‘sight to see’. Forestry was called to remove the tree since it was city property.

Finally there was a tree that fell on the 2700 block of Chandler tht completely blocked the Burbank Bike Path.

Police were extremely busy during the entire evening but responded to every emergency in minutes and took care of all the problems with efficiency, making the calls to the proper departments.
