Cartoon Network recently screened a Burbank Boys & Girls Club PSA created by a group of nine middle and high school kids with the mentorship of Mike Roth, an animator and director at the studio.

The screening was held at the Burbank-based studio on Wednesday, December 3, to celebrate completion of the anti-bullying animated short and honor retiring Cartoon Network Director of Operations and Community Relations, Zita Lefebvre. The PSA will be posted on the Cartoon Network and Burbank Boys & Girls Club websites.

Called Revelation, the PSA discusses bullying, based on the participants’ personal experiences. After Roth taught lessons on writing, storyboarding and illustration, the kids collaborated to write the story and created characters, backgrounds and storyboards, explained Lefebvre.

“They came into the studio to record the voices and did an amazing job,” she added.

“I requested and received a grant from Turner in Atlanta to create a PSA with the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank,” said Lefebvre, of the process of putting the project together. “Mike Roth directed the film and went with me weekly to Boys & Girls Club and worked with the kids to teach them the animation process.”

Burbank-based photographer and myBurbank.com Chief Photographer Ross Benson took interior and exterior photos at Robert L. Stevenson Elementary to provide source material Roth used for some backgrounds.

“It was a wonderful project to work with the kids, teach them a process and to have them create an animated film that will be shown on the Cartoon Network and Boys & Girls Club webpage,” commented Lefbvre. “It was a great experience for the kids to come into the studio to voice record their PSA.”

The Revelation PSA was an offshoot of the Young Writers Program that Cartoon Network started at Stevenson Elementary in 2012. Cartoon Network purchased several computers for the Burbank Boys & Girls Club this past summer and beings a project in 2015 teaching the kids to create their own movies.

“This partnership with the Cartoon Network allowed the kids to experience the real world of animation and inspired them to dream,” commented Sherry DeLizia, Creative Arts Director at the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley. “Most importantly, it empowered the kids to make a difference.”

Burbank’s Candela Fernandez Completes Spectacular Cross Country Season

With cross country having come to an end this past weekend, we look back at one of the greatest seasons in Burbank High School history. If you missed the superlative efforts by Candela Fernandez, don’t worry. You are in luck. She’s only a junior with another year to cement herself as one of the State’s top long distance runners and possibly the area’s best of all-time.

As the weeks dwindled down towards the end of the cross country season, Fernandez had four goals in mind:

  • Become the Pacific League individual champion
  • Finish in the top 3 at the CIF Finals in Division I
  • Finish in the top 5 at the CIF State Championships
  • Qualify for the Nike Nationals in Portland, Oregon

Fernandez, 16, capped off an amazing season accomplishing the first three goals and falling just short of the fourth.

Candela Fernandez

Candela Fernandez

First, she swept all three league meets in convincing fashion with times of 17:57 (Crescenta Valley Park), 16:37 (Arcadia County Park) and 17:57 (CV Park- League Finals). More importantly, Fernandez led the Lady Bulldogs to a league title, the first for Burbank since 1978.

In addition, Fernandez set a new school record at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational with a blistering time of 17:13. Consider this- her freshman year she ran a 19:59 at Mt. SAC followed by an 18:29 her sophomore year. Imagine what could happen a year from now.

Fernandez’s success continued at the CIF Southern Section Prelims where she coasted to a first place finish in her heat with a time of 17:33. The Bulldogs advanced as a team to the CIF Finals a week later for the first time since 1987.

At the CIF Southern Section finals, Fernandez placed 3rd overall in Division I with a time of 17:32 earning her a spot at the CIF State cross country championships in Fresno.

With the State’s elite runners coming together to compete for cross country’s ultimate prize, Fernandez had one final strong run and placed 4th individually in Division I with a time of 17:42 to earn All-State honors.

“It’s so awesome to compete against the best because they are ranked in the State and are amazing runners,” Fernandez said.

She finished 11th overall among all five divisions narrowly missing the required top-5 placement to advance to the Nationals. You can bet that will be her #1 goal in 2015.

Fernandez’s remarkable season ranks as one of the most decorated in Burbank history. It is safe to say that she has become Burbank’s greatest female runner surpassing McKenzie Paul in 2010. All of Paul’s records have been swept aside by the talented and humble Fernandez.

Her journey is a unique one in that she never ran long distance prior to coming to BHS. She came out freshman year, gave it a shot, and the rest is history.

“I started off like everyone else not knowing what the sport was and just having to get used to it,” she said. “I began to really fall in love with it and put in the hard work. That’s how I got better.”

By the spring of her sophomore year, Fernandez had made her mark in track with school-record times in the two mile (10:49.60) and mile (4:57.59) while competing at the CIF Track and Field Finals. She became the first female athlete ever at Burbank to break the five-minute barrier in the 1,600.

She credits her hard work ethic and training with the boys track and cross country teams to helping her improve and excel at a high level.

“I began running with the guys last track season during my sophomore year,” Fernandez said. “Having me there pushed them because they don’t want to get beat by a girl and me hanging off of them during speed workouts and long runs definitely pushed me.

“I’ve worked really hard to be where I am at. Sometimes it’s unbelievable when you take a step back and think about all you’ve done. At the same time, I can’t say it’s surprising because of all the work I’ve put in. You put in the work and you get the results.”

Coach Trevor Marca has done a superb job preparing Fernandez for the grind of a cross country season both physically and mentally. Even though he realizes he is witnessing something special, it hasn’t come as a total surprise to him.

“It’s been a lot of fun over the course of the last couple years,” Marca said. “It hasn’t been totally surprising because I felt she had the tools such as the work ethic, the mentality, the discipline to attack the sport the correct way and have the respect and knowledge of the sport to be able to succeed.

“We take it one season at a time and even one meet at a time. She has areas where she can still improve and areas where we will focus for the track season. My brain is already working in overdrive of getting her to the next step.”

And to think she is only 16 years old. We still have track in the spring and the entire 2015-16 school year to truly appreciate Fernandez’s run to greatness.

On a rainy and wet field, Burroughs came from two goals down to score two goals and tie Chaminade, 2 – 2. The Indians (0-0-1) had a shaky first half and were outplayed all over the field, giving up two goals while adjusting to the weather conditions.

In the second half, the Indians came back. ‎In the middle of the half, sophomore‎ Diego Galaviz scored to cut the Eagles lead and start the comeback. Ten minutes later, David Campos scored on a header to tie the game.

The Indians had plenty of chances to win the game in the second half. Scoring chances by Marcos Arana, David Campos and VJ Salazar were stopped by good goalkeeping. A late chance by Cade Borland from 50 yards barely missed the goal.‎ Goalie Jordan Morgan made some big saves to preserve the tie.

Cancer Battle Claims Loved Burbank Resident Jeri Buliavac

$

Jeri Lynne Buliavac passed away in her Burbank home surrounded by family on Sunday night, December 7, after a yearlong battle with esophageal cancer. She was 50.

Jeri 2

Buliavac had lived in Burbank since eighth grade, attended David Starr Jordan Middle School and graduated from John Burroughs High School in 1982. She worked as a hairstylist at Headlines Salon in Burbank.

She was diagnosed with cancer on December 12, 2013. Her journey was chronicled on the website caringbridge.org, and from the time she was diagnosed until her passing, her page had received 25,006 hits. Her Facebook page has 602 friends. She called the group of supporters her village.

“She was very popular,” her daughter Lexi said.

After Buliavac started chemotherapy in January, friends surprised her with a “Shoe Your Support” event, collecting more than 250 pairs of new and gently used sneakers, which they subsequently lined up outside her home.

The sneakers were donated to two organizations. Slightly used athletic shoes went to the Marina High School’s lacrosse team in Huntington Beach and the new athletic shoes were given to Buliavac’s favorite charity. the Family Service Agency of Burbank, a nonprofit organization that provides counseling services for individuals, families and youth.

Jeri 1

Coordinating the project were her cousin Elise Stearns-Niesen, June Weaver, Jody Blatz and Mariam Denton, said her best friend Jennie Stott. In May, family and friends came to celebrate her fiftieth birthday at a party hosted by Stearns-Niesen. Instead of gifts, Buliavac asked everyone to donate money to Family Service Agency. The total raised was $2,088.

Family Service Agency dedicated its seventh annual 5K CareWalk, also in May, to Buliavac, for her continued support.

Buliavac continued to work at Headlines Salon up until a few days before Thanksgiving, Lexi said, and she was training to run the Los Angeles Marathon.

“She had gotten up to 18.5 miles. She was almost there,” Lexi said.

On Friday night, friends came together for a vigil and stood outside the Buliavac home singing Christmas carols. The turnout was excellent, which was surprising because the announcements went out over CaringBridge.org and Facebook just the day before, Stearns-Niesen said. A two-and-one-half-minute video of the caroling has been uploaded to Youtube.

“It was one final gift that her friends could give her,” Stearns-Niesen said. “It was amazing. We think about 150 people were there. And because Jeri was such a great friend to the Family Service Agency of Burbank, we asked people if they wish to donate a toy to its toy drive and we collected about 60 toys.”

Those who attended the vigil gathered at Mariposa and Chandler and were given candles and a copies of six Christmas carols that Buliavac had chosen herself for them to sing, said Claudia Bonis, one of Buliavac’s salon clients. They walked over to her house and stood in her front yard.

“The candlelight vigil was just beautiful,” Bonis said. “All these people just singing their hearts out for her. I was pleased I was there.”

Jeri 3

Buliavac’s family, including her daughters, mother and sister, were with her.

“My dad was sitting next to her hospice bed holding her hand,” Lexi said. “When he said ‘Your village is here to sing to you,’ she squeezed his hand a little bit so she acknowledged the fact that everyone was here and she could hear them.”

After the vigil, everyone returned to Mariposa and Chandler and made a circle around Stan Buliavac and he led everyone in a prayer. In her last days, Buliavac told her family how proud she was of her daughters and she wanted to make sure everyone was going to be okay, Lexi said.

“We told her that she raised the best kids in the world and that we will be fine and she will be missed,” Lexi said.

She is survived by her husband, Stan; three daughters, Taylor, Samantha and Lexi; her parents Richard and Jean Andersen of Burbank; one sister Jackie Costanzo of Santa Clarita; one brother Steve Andersen of Santa Clarita; and Daisy Hernandez, who Buliavac considered like a daughter.

Buliavac’s husband Stan said she was a special woman who was loved by everyone.

“She was unique,” he said. “She was very generous and would do anything for anyone.”

There will be a private burial service for the family on Friday. A public memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on January 9 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 6020 Radford Avenue, North Hollywood. A reception will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, located at 2232 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank.

Buliavac leaves a legacy of friendships, goodness and generosity, Stearns-Niesen said.

“I love harder. I forgive quicker. And I laugh more because of Jeri,” she said.

Stearns-Niesen remembered when five of their friends went on a 13-mile run together and at the twelvth mile, Buliavac didn’t notice a rail crossing arm was rising up in front of her. She ran right into it and it knocked her down.

“She was in pain but within a minute she got back up and said ‘I’m finishing –we gotta go’. She literally got up with a big knot on her head and finished the last mile. That’s how she approached the last year. She would get knocked down and she’d get back up and she finished strong right to the end.”

Christmastime was Buliavac’s favorite time of year, and one of her requests was for holiday carols to be played during her funeral — no matter what month her time came, her daughter Lexi said.

Her favorite Christmas carol was Winter Wonderland.”I could see her up there with everything white and her just singing along to the song,” Lexi said.

First, congratulations to Crescenta Valley who ran the table with 14 straight wins that culminated in a CIF Championship. The Falcons brought credibility to the Pacific League with their unbeaten season and incredible run to the title that every coach and player covets.

With that being said, the Pacific League released its All-League football selections and a host of Burbank and Burroughs players were recognized. A list of every recipient is below. Congrats to all the players!

First-Team Offense

A local pair of talented running backs made first team. Burbank senior Tony Toledo rushed for 764 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season to lead the Bulldogs to an 8-4 overall record and a quarterfinal appearance in the CIF Playoffs.

Chance Bell of Burroughs

Chance Bell of Burroughs, a sophomore transfer from Las Vegas, made his presence known gaining 1,124 yards on 150 carries (7.5 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns as the Indians went 6-4 overall.

Toledo and Bell found success this year due in large part because of their offensive linemen. Senior Max Montoya of Burbank and the Burroughs senior duo of Andrew Mills and Anthony Olea made first-team.

Burroughs senior kicker Andres Aguilar converted six of nine field goals and 44 extra points to earn first-team accolades. He routinely put the ball in the end zone on kickoffs limiting the opposition from any special team scores.

First-team Defense

Burbank’s Kyle Alvarez and Burroughs’ Evan Gurley were two of the most dominant defensive linemen in the league.

Big-Game-2014-JBHS-BHS-0462-489x450

Burbank’s Kyle Alvarez

The Burbank California School Employees Association Chapter 674 (CSEA) announced that it will endorse Jesse “Tangk” Tangkhpanya for a seat on the Burbank Unified School Board (BUSD).

CSEA President Mary Hyman delivered a statement on the endorsement: “Jesse Tangkhpanya has the experience we need to hold the Burbank Unified School District accountable on how it spends our money. Tangkhpanya currently sits on four Local Control Funding Formula oversight councils and that broad based level of experience will be a strong asset as our next Burbank School Board member.”

Tangkhpanya was grateful for the endorsement, citing the need to hire additional support staff to offset the massive layoffs endured over the last seven years at BUSD.

“The fact that I’m a newcomer to Burbank politics sets me apart from the other candidates,”

Tangkhpanya said, “I don’t have the political baggage that comes with years of public office. I owe favors to no one, have no axes to grind, and am uniquely positioned to provide unbiased, unfettered oversight. Voters can select up to three board members this election. One of those members should be the watchdog candidate – the outside, independent candidate that watches the taxpayer’s money and ensures it is efficiently and effectively applied for the benefit of our students.“

Disney Asks City to Extend Master Plan

The Walt Disney Company has filed an application with the City of Burbank to extend the expiration date of the existing Development Agreement for the Disney Studios Master Plan by 18 years to November 24, 2035 (the “Proposed Project”). The discretionary approval requested from the City is a formal amendment to the existing Development Agreement associated with Planned Development (PD) No. 91-13 (Disney Studio Master Plan) that was approved on October 20, 1992.

No changes are proposed to the type of land uses, square-footage, or intensity of development allowed by the Development Agreement and Master Plan. Completion of the remaining development would implement the City’s vision for the Media District as a regional employment center comprised of a variety of media-oriented and commercial uses. The Burbank2035 General Plan previously analyzed full build-out on the Disney Studio property as envisioned in the Development Agreement.

Environmental Review: The City, as the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Lead Agency, has determined that a Supplemental EIR is required, and has hired an environmental consultant to prepare the document. All interested persons may provide input to the City and the consultant regarding the scope of the Draft Supplemental EIR.  To begin this public process, a Notice of Preparation has been circulated, and a Scoping Meeting (noted above) will be held so that all interested persons may provide input, verbally or in writing, regarding any potential environmental effects that you believe should be studied through the EIR process.  The public comment period for the Notice of Preparation (NOP) is a total of 60 days, beginning on December 8, 2014, and ending on February 5, 2015. Your written comments must be received by the City of Burbank Planning & Transportation Division no later than February 5, 2015 (you may send written comments via email to: bfoote@burbankca.gov ).

After the Draft SEIR has been prepared, the document will be circulated for the required 45-day public review/comment period. The public and all interested persons will have additional opportunity to provide comments at that time. Check the Planning & Transportation Division website (http://www.burbankca.gov/departments/community-development/planning-transportation/current-planning/disney-studios-development-agreement-amendment) for updates and more information.

Scoping/Community Meeting: A Scoping Meeting and Community Meeting will held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, beginning at 5:30 p.m. to receive public comments on the proposed Supplemental EIR. The meeting will be held in the Community Room (Room 104) on the first floor of the Community Services Building at 150 N. Third Street in downtown Burbank. Representatives from Disney Studios will be present to respond to any questions about the project, and City of Burbank staff and the City’s environmental consultant will be present to receive comments and provide more information about the EIR process.

For further information, or if you have any questions, you may contact the project planner.

Legendary Disney composer Richard M. Sherman and Burbank music teacher Steven Hollis were honored Sunday evening, December 7, at the Education Through Music – Los Angeles’ Ninth Annual Benefit Gala. Held at the Skirball Cultural Center, Sherman and Hollis were presented with Shining Star awards, recognizing their contributions to music and music education over the years.

Students from Burbank’s Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School joined children from other elementary schools throughout Los Angeles that participate in ETM-LA music programs for a rousing rendition of “Let’s Go Fly A Kite,” with Hollis playing piano.

Sherman, the Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist, who, with his brother Robert, wrote the songs for many Disney films including Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Jungle Book and Winnie the Pooh. They also wrote scores and songs for many other productions, such as the enduring film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, starring Dick Van Dyke.

The Sherman Brothers also composed the most translated song in the world, “It’s A Small World (After All),” for the Disneyland theme park attraction.

“I felt very fortunate as a young man because of the fact that music was a part of the academic career,” commented Sherman. “Unfortunately today, we don’t have the funding we should have. I’m happy to know that Education Through Music-Los Angeles is now working constantly, bringing the wonderful gift of music to youngsters because it’s so vital – it’s so important.”

Sherman played a medley of several of his famous songs, peppered with anecdotes, including a story about how he met with Walt Disney in his office at the Burbank studios every Friday afternoon and they would talk about their projects. Every week, Sherman said, Disney would eventually look up towards the Burbank Verdugos and ask Sherman to “play it” – “Feed The Birds” – Disney’s favorite song.

“I think music is a unifier. It’s something that gives people a sense of teamwork,” Sherman continued. “They learn how glorious it is to hear the various parts blending together. It’s a wonderful exultation of the human spirit.”

Hollis teaches at three Burbank Unified School District sites: Roosevelt, McKinley and Edison. He works with over a 1000 students every week. Up until last year and the advent of additional funding for music programs, he taught close to 2000 BUSD students every week. While he teaches general music programs at McKinley and Edison, Hollis instructs the pilot ukelele program at Roosevelt Elementary.

Hollis points to the introduction of deaf and hard of hearing students into his school music classes, the implementation an integrated music, art, drama and dance curriculum for FAME (Fine Arts Methods in Education) and the development of a web site for engaged learning using Blues music and improvisation techniques as some of his most rewarding accomplishments.

A professional pianist for more than 35 years, Hollis has performed as a solo artist and a member of a 16-piece show band, playing alongside Marvin Hamlish, Smokey Robinson, The Gatlin Brothers and Joan Rivers. He holds degrees of Bachelor of Music Education in Vocal/Instrumental K-12 and Masters of Arts with a music curriculum emphasis.

Hollis has taught for nearly 20 years, mainly in the Chicago area. He has taught music for BUSD for the past six years. He also teaches over 30 students  piano, voice, percussion, theory and guitar lessons from his studio on Olive Avenue in Burbank, Steve Hollis Music.

At the end of the evening, the Roosevelt Elementary School students joined Sherman onstage for an “It’s A Small World (After All)” sing-a-long with the audience.

Proceeds from the event benefit ETM-LA, a nonprofit organization provides music instruction and programs to more than 7000 children. The organization hopes to add another 1000 children to the tally by 2015.

Each year, ETM-LA celebrates two Shining Star honorees, a composer and a teacher, whose contributions through music have had great impact. Last year, ETM-LA honored David Starr Jordan Middle School teacher Christine DeMore and composer John Debney.
