Burbank Girls’ Soccer Escapes With Win

Tight, compact and intact is what the Hoover High girls’ soccer team was Thursday when it hosted Burbank in a Pacific League match.

The Tornadoes held tight for 79 minutes. But only lucky bounce is all it took as Burbank capitalized on virtually the only mistake for either side in the match in a 1-0 victory.

A long-distance shot by Burbank freshman Jocelyn Morinaga was mishandled by Hoover’s goalie and ended up being the difference.

“It was an important win for us. I’m glad we came out of here with a win. It was a tough battle,” Burbank coach Dennis Leon said. “Their defense was solid. It was hard for us to break through. A credit to them (Hoover). They are really changing their program here. They came out to battle and compete, which is good.”

Both teams were playing their first match of the new year. Burbank (4-3-1 overall, 2-3 in league) did stay busy during the holidays.

“They did everything we did in practice. Our defense played really well today,” Leon said.

Burbank thought it took the lead in the 46th minute, but Emma Batista was called offsides.

Hoover’s goalie blocked a shot attempt by Sophie Peek in the 49th minute and Batista’s second-effort attempt went wide of the goal.

Morinaga also tested the Hoover goalie in the 67th minute, only to be denied.

Hoover (3-11-1, 0-5-1) did have several long-range shots on Burbank goalie Sydney Evans-Armendariz. But none of them caused any serious difficulty.

Forcing the action by employing a stifling and trapping defense and playing an up-tempo game helped create points that came off numerous turnovers for the Burbank High girls’ basketball team when it faced visiting Hoover on Thursday night.

Never trailing and outscoring the Tornadoes in all but the last quarter saw the Bulldogs win handily, 60-27, in a Pacific League encounter behind a game-high 13 points from senior point/shooting guard Nikaela Damasen.

Damasen, who scored all of her points in the first half, knocked down three three-pointers in the opening period as the Bulldogs led 18-2, and finished with four from three-point range.

Ten players scored for the Bulldogs (5-13 and 2-4 in league) as junior shooting guard Emily Galoustian and freshman shooting guard Andrea Aparicio each scored nine points for the hosts.

Damasen’s trey with 2:08 remaining in the initial period gave Burbank a 9-2 edge.

Burbank made 22 of 75 field goal attempts for 29.3 percent while Hoover converted eight of 37 for 21.6 percent.

The Tornadoes (1-10 and 0-5 in league) were paced by freshman point/shooting guard Aleena Kalanijian, who accounted for nine points that included two three-pointers.

The Bulldogs marched ahead 33-10 at halftime as Galoustian drilled two from three-point range in the second frame including one at 6:50 that made it 21-2, while Aparacio scored four points and Damasen added a three-pointer.

Seven Burbank players found their way into the scorer’s book in the third quarter as sophomore point guard Ani Dionysian dropped in six points and her bucket with 1:38 showing saw the Bulldogs pull ahead 48-15.

Junior power forward/center Ava Casey contributed four points in the third quarter for the Bulldogs.

In the frame, the Bulldogs, who canned six of 15 from the free-throw line for 40 percent and outrebounded the Tornadoes, 47-38, nailed three from three-point range as the team finished by hitting 10 treys compared to two from the Tornadoes.

With most of the starters on the bench for Burbank, which led 54-17 through three quarters, in the fourth quarter, the Tornadoes, who sank five of 13 free throws for 38.4 percent, outscored the Bulldogs 8-6, as Kalanijian totaled four points in the period.

Sophomore point guard Charlotte Hartwell finished with five points for the Bulldogs that included a three-pointer, junior power forward Lauren Navarro tossed in four points, all in the first quarter, junior Lili Okhayan scored four points, sophomore point guard Yvette Soukiazian nailed a three-pointer in the third quarter and junior point guard Arevita Keshishyan accounted for three points.

This was truly a heartbreaker for the Burbank High boys’ basketball team after suffering a last minute setback to visiting Hoover after leading the entire game on Thursday evening.

Ahead after the first period, at halftime and through three periods wasn’t good enough as the Bulldogs lost 57-54 to the Tornadoes in a Pacific League game.

Despite three Burbank players scoring in double figures, including junior point guard Kamran Alborzian tallying a game-best 15 points, Hoover’s balanced scoring proved slightly better as four players scored 12 points.

The game-winner was made by senior shooting guard Zachary Van Patten, who was fouled and canned the free throw for a three-point lead.

In the fourth period, the Bulldogs (5-14 and 1-5 in league) connected on two of nine for 22.2 percent from the floor but made five of eight (62.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

Hoover, which hit 14 three-pointers to four for Burbank, outscored the Bulldogs 36-23 in the second half after making 13 of 30 (43.3 percent) while the hosts converted seven of 18 (38.8 percent).

“We lost our offensive flow in the second half, and they capitalized on it,” Burbank first-year coach Steve Eshleman said.

In the third period, the Tornadoes (11-6 and 2-4 in league) made six three-pointers and hit three in the fourth period.

Hoover drilled six of 15 (40 percent) from the field in the fourth period.

Van Patten came up with five points in the fourth quarter while senior small forward Michael Shamoun (12 points) hit a three-pointer as did junior shooting guard Jaden Duncan (12 points) and sophomore Justin Herrera, who finished with nine points.

Senior power forward Hagop Demirjian added a hoop en route to 12 points for the Tornadoes, who shot 32.8 percent overall on 21 of 64.

Junior point/shooting guard Odartey Blankson tallied five of his 10 points in the fourth quarter after scoring five points in the first period.

Junior point guard Kevin Dehbashian also added four points in the fourth period, but no other Bulldog scored.

Burbank jumped out to a 17-9 advantage after the first eight minutes as Alborzian contributed nine points while Duncan tossed in six points after hitting two from three-point range.

Junior Rami Khozahi knocked down all of his six points in the second period for the Bulldogs, who led 31-21 at the intermission including a trey with 2:44 left for a 28-13 lead, while Van Patten scored four points.

In the fateful third frame, Demirjian tallied eight points that included two from three-point distance including a three-pointer with 1:31 showing that sliced the lead to 42-38 while Shamoun nailed two three-pointers for six points.

Shamoun’s three-pointer with 5:49 remaining in the fourth period trimmed Burbank’s lead to 51-49.

Dehbashian accounted for five of his 11 points for the Bulldogs in the third period and Alborzian dropped four points as Burbank, which made 19 of 43 (44.1 percent), held a 45-41 edge heading to the fourth period.

Junior swingman Areg Aslanyan tallied six points including four points in the second period for the Bulldogs, junior Aren Malekian added three points in the third period and sophomore Christopher Ong tossed in a three-pointer in the first period.

The City of Burbank (City) Parks and Recreation Department invites qualified artists to submit their proposal for an artistic shade structure at Johnny Carson Park. Artists of all styles and creative expressions are invited to participate in this exciting opportunity to promote the arts and enhance the vibrancy of Johnny Carson Park. Detailed information and instructions on submitting a proposal for this project are provided in the Call for Artists document, which can be accessed via the link below:

https://www.burbankca.gov/web/parks-recreation/call-for-artists

Johnny Carson Park is a 17-acre regional park located at 400 Bob Hope Drive in Burbank, California. It offers beautiful views of the natural scenery and is a popular community gathering place for various activities. Additionally, the Park provides a variety of amenities, including nature education, gardens, viewing decks, exercise equipment, walking trails, a creek, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a stage. The stage lacks a shade structure, and the City is seeking creative ideas for an artistic shade structure that provides relief from the sun while enhancing the beauty and functionality of the stage and Park.

This project is part of the City’s Art in Public Places Program, founded in 1992. Per the City  ordinance,  new  development  projects  exceeding  a  construction  budget  of  over

$500,000 must contribute 1% of the total project costs toward qualified on-site public art. Alternatively, the developer may choose to contribute these funds to the City’s Art in Public Places Fund. These non-taxpayer dollars are used to enhance, maintain, and fund art installations in public spaces.

The Johnny Carson Park Shade Structure Public Art Project represents a significant investment in the beautification of Burbank’s parks and the enrichment of its community through the introduction of public art.

The City of Burbank is seeking public input to develop a vision for its Sister City partnerships and invites the community to participate in one of three upcoming meetings.

A Sister City partnership is a formal relationship between two cities established by City Council resolution. Burbank has established five Sister Cities since 1960 and is exploring ways to expand its impact by developing these partnerships to support areas such as economic development, tourism, cultural exchange, and learning.

The concept of Sister Cities was established in the 1950s by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote international cooperation. Burbank established its first Sister City with Solna, Sweden, in 1960, based on industries shared by the two cities, including airplane manufacturing and film production. This was followed by partnering with Incheon, Korea, in 1961; Gaborone, Botswana, in 1975; Ota, Japan, in 1983; and Arezzo, Italy, in 2023.

Members of the community are invited to provide their input on the future of Burbank’s interactions with its Sister Cities at an upcoming meeting. Registration is not required.

  • Saturday, January 20, at 11 am, at the Burbank Central Library, 110 N. Glenoaks Boulevard
  • Tuesday, January 23, at 3:30 pm, at the Buena Vista Library, 300 N. Buena Vista Street
  • Thursday, January 25, at 7 pm, at the Burbank Central Library, 110 N. Glenoaks Boulevard

Input may also be provided by emailing sistercity@burbankca.gov. For more information on Burbank’s Sister City program, visit www.burbanklibrary.org/sistercity

The Providence High boys’ basketball team did not win a CIF Southern Section championship Friday night.

But the Pioneers did beat a CIF championship team.

Providence opened Prep League play with a 100-73 win over Rio Hondo Prep, a team that consisted exclusively of players from its CIF Southern Section Division 9 championship football team.

The 100-point total is the highest Providence has had in coach Anthony Cosby’s three-year tenure.

“It has been a point of reference in practice. (We have) lots of emphasis on spacing, sharing the basketball, and not cutting any corners in terms of footwork (The) guys are getting better at knocking down that shot,” Cosby said.

As a team Providence hit 15 three-point shots, and five different players made at least one long-distance basket.

“It is nice to get one (win) under our belt,” Cosby said. “I tip my hat to Rio Hondo. Their coach gets their kids ready to play hard. They are fearless.”

Julian Thompkins, who led Providence (9-8 oveall, 1-0 in league) with 29 points, was good from long distance three times in each half.

One of those three-pointers gave Providence its first lead at 7-5. Providence went up 24-15 at halftime. The Pioneers increased their lead to 54-32 at halftime.

Jalen Thomas also came up big for Providence as he finished with 21 points, and showed valuable leadership capabilities when Thompkins went to the bench midway through the fourth quarter with the Pioneers comfortabally ahead.

Point guard Alex Kizirian, who finished with 10 points, spoke about his team’s improved depth.

“At the start of the season our depth wasn’t effective, but as we’ve gotten deeper into the season they have really stepped up and taken their roles,” Kizirian said.

Sophomore Griffin Berschneider finished with 15 points, Fellow sophomore Riley Murphy had 12 points. Soloman Huang, another sophomore, had 11 points. Ciaran Turner and Constantine Tablada each had two points.

Rio Hondo Prep (7-6, 0-2) was led by Derek David, who had 18 points.

Providence Girls Hoops Toys With Rio Hondo Prep

On a night when Lia Krumian scored seemingly at will, so complete was her dominance that there were times when the senior shooting guard was unstoppable, and her play helped lead the Providence High girls’ basketball team to a lopsided 50-31 win over visiting Rio Hondo Prep on Friday night.

Officially Krumian scored 37 points and 21 of those points were registered at halftime when the Pioneers dashed in front 23-13 in the Prep League matchup.

Krumian, a slick ball handler who is fast, athletic and a deadeye shooter, nailed 14 shots that included four from three-point range and also added five free throws.

The beauty of Krumian’s game is that despite being the best player on the team, she always tries to get all of her teammates involved in the offense.

Three Providence players did score, and they accounted for 13 points, but the point total could have been higher if a few shots here and there would have dropped through the basket.

The other Providence players who scored were senior shooting guard/small forward Sylvie Demirjian with six points, senior point guard Andrea Ferrer with four points and senior power forward Nicole Kadi with three points.

The Pioneers (10-3 and 2-0 in league) didn’t shoot a high percentage and neither did the Kares.

Senior point guard Andrea Ferrer scored four points for the Pioneers, played solid defense and set up the offense. (Photo by Austin Gebhardt)

Providence connected on 20 of 60 from the field for 33.3 percent and Rio Hondo Prep hit 12 of 47 for 25.5 percent.

The Pioneers did make all of their five free throws while the Kares nailed six of 14 for 42.8 percent.

Krumian, who was coming off a 48-point performance in a 73-20 win over Westridge, scored all of her team’s 19 points in the first quarter as she nailed seven attempts that included two from three-point range and also added three free throws.

Senior Madelyn Van Cleve (five points) accounted for three points in the opening period for the Kares.

Krumian cooled down in the second period as she converted two from the charity line.

Senior Emma Carson dropped five points that included a three-pointer in the second frame for Rio Hondo Prep.

Carson, who led the Kares with 13 points, followed up with four points in the third period.

Perhaps taking a brief respite from a huge scoring quarter, Krumian settled in and canned five shots including two treys in the third period and tallied 12 points and had 33 points heading to the fourth quarter as Providence darted in front 41-19.

Ferrer’s bucket with 4:10 remaining in the third period saw the Pioneers race to a 29-15 advantage and Ferrer’s hoop with 1:30 left in the same frame made it 36-15.

With the contest well in hand, the Kares (9-6 and 0-3 in league) played a lot better in the fourth frame as they outscored the hosts 12-9, with Carson totaling four points in the period.

When sophomore Allie Scott scored her only points with 4:30 showing in the fourth period, the Kares sliced the lead to 41-27 but Krumian answered with a bucket and 3:50 on the clock as Providence pulled ahead 45-27.

Adoptable Pet of the Week: Zephyr

Here’s what some of the Burbank Animal Shelter Volunteers have to say about Zephyr: “Every time I spend time with Zephyr he makes me feel like I’m his best friend. He often lays down by my outstretched legs and when he’s in a lap dog mood, like he was today, he extends his two front paws so they drape over my legs.”

“Zephyr was energetic for about 2 minutes before he was just fine sitting and getting belly rubs in his kennel. He definitely thinks he is a lap dog (climbed right into my lap and made himself comfortable).”

“He was more interested in laying by my side and getting some gentle pets. Hanging out with him is like hanging out with a living pillow, if living pillows were a thing. His blue husky eyes are absolutely stunning and he knows how to bat an eye when he wants to steal your heart.”

A kennel attendant said “Zephyr will need some training, but he’s an awesome guy and he would make a great addition to any family. He can be active but also calms down and enjoys relaxing with his companions as well. I have been working with Zephyr on his loose leash walking and he is very food motivated which should make training very easy, however he can be stubborn (this is common for huskies). He is a fast learner and eager to please. Myself along with other volunteers have taught him to sit as well and he is working on ‘leave it’.”

Zephyr is a typical husky and we think he will do fine with middle school aged kids who know how to respect boundaries as he is very friendly with everyone he meets. Zephyr can be vocal so apartments or housing situations with shared walls are not recommended for his and your neighbors’ sake. We have introduced Zephyr to our Dogs Playing for Life Playgroup and we feel he would do best as the only animal in the household or with a passive female. Dogs who are always in his business or constantly wanting to play stresses him out. A meet and greet is required if you already have dogs in the household. No cats please.

Zephyr will need a little training, but he’s an awesome guy and he would make a great addition to any family. Stop by the shelter or call 818-238-3340 to make an appointment to adopt or foster Zephyr.

Burbank Girls Water Polo Loses Close Decision To Muir 7-6

By Rick Assad

It took just one poor quarter by the Burbank High girls’ water polo team to let visiting Muir back into the match on Tuesday afternoon.

Ahead by two points heading to the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs slipped and were outscored 5-2 and fell 7-6 in a Pacific League battle at the Burroughs pool.

Six players scored one goal each for Burbank including goaltender Angela Khachikyan with 11 seconds in the match from 12 yards that cut the lead to one.

There simply wasn’t enough time to tie the score as the Mustangs ran out the clock.

“Our goalie had one of the best games ever today on offense and defense,” Burbank coach Hayk Minasyan said. “She took control of the defense in this game. She also excelled in a play specifically made for her and scored a goal. As always she delivered and I’m very proud of her and the team.”

Muir, which didn’t have a girls’ or boys’ water polo team since the early 2000s, saw the girls’ squad come off a win over longtime power Crescenta Valley, and under third-year coach Micol Issa, the Mustangs (14-2 and 2-0 in league) are definitely going in the right direction.

Here’s the evidence: One season ago, the Muir girls’ squad lost in the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs opening round and last year the Muir boys’ fell in the Division IV first round, but in 2022 the boys’ captured a CIF banner.

There’s a break in the action so the Bulldogs talk over strategy in a match versus Muir. (Photo by Rick Assad)

Isabella Leyva accounted for a match-high five goals for the Mustangs including three tallies that were scored in the fourth period.

“Isabella is a senior and had been a major part of rebuilding the Muir program,” Issa said. “She loves water polo, studies a lot and is one of our captains. She wants to see our team go further in the playoffs this year.”

Leyva’s goal from seven yards and 6:32 left in the fourth period narrowed the lead to 4-3 and Leyva’s nine-yard strike with 3:44 on the clock handed the Mustangs a 5-4 lead.

When Leyva scored on a five-yard toss and 1:52 remaining in the period, Muir stretched its lead to 7-5.

Jasmine Collins also added a tally for the Mustangs from seven yards and 5:06 left that evened it at 4-4.

A seven-yard shot from Muir’s Maya Mihalko and 3:17 on the clock extended the Mustangs cushion to 6-4.

Not to be overlooked in this dramatic victory is Muir goalie, Vivienne Wood.

“She just started playing last year,” Issa noted. “She loved her experience with Muir last season so much that she joined Rose Bowl Aquatics and has been a dedicated water polo player. She is the other captain and does a great job encouraging everyone on the team to do their best. She’s not easily shaken.”

Burbank’s Khloe Aghakhani knocked in a 12-yard throw with 3:00 remaining that saw the Bulldogs (5-0 and 2-1 in league) trim the deficit to 6-5.

The third period witnessed the Bulldogs tally one goal as Melanie Hayrapetian found the net from 10 yards and 2:42 left that made it 4-2 in favor of the home team.

“In the ending half of the third quarter we had one of our best defenders, Natalie [Bislamyan] rolled which threw off our game in the fourth and we couldn’t catch a break so I had to use up my time outs so our players can rest,” Minasyan explained.

Minasyan then added: “The other three quarters the girls excelled in their defense while getting passes to Lizzie [Bislamyan] in set to finish a couple of shots,” he pointed out. “The girls were coming back on defense and helping Natalie until she got rolled.”

Leyva came out red hot in the first period as she accounted for two goals and a 2-1 lead for the Mustangs.

When Leyva scored on a five-yard heave with 6:48 left it was 1-0 and Leyva’s seven-yard strike and 2:38 on the ticker extended the lead to 2-1.

Burbank’s lone goal in the frame was scored by Lizzie Bislamyan and 3:21 left that evened it at 1-1.

In the second period, the Bulldogs scored twice as Elina Khechumyan unloaded a strike from 12 yards and 6:20 to level it at 2-2 and Kristina Khamtrashyan’s 10-yard throw and 49 seconds left made it 3-2.

Charity Softball Tournament Registration Open in Support of “Charlie the Champion,” Born With Half a Heart

Meet “Charlie the Champion,” Burbank’s five year old boy who has beat all odds with just half a heart. His family has started the Charlie’s Champs Charity Softball Tournament that will be taking place on February 3rd at George Izay Park to support HeartWorks in their mission to cure congenital heart defects.

Charlie Nelson was born with a condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) which means that he was born with only half of a heart.  Congenial heart defects (CHD) affect 40,000 children that are born each year but only 1,000 children in the U.S. are born with HLHS, and must undergo a string of surgeries and procedures all within their first three years of life. Children with HLHS must endure three open-heart surgeries to re-route the heart’s blood flow and construct the right ventricle to work as the main pumping chamber. While this doesn’t cure the patient, it does create a functioning heart.

“These last five years we have done everything we possibly could to help Charlie and his special heart work as well as it possibly can. He has been through three open heart surgeries, multiple cardiac catheterizations, countless hospital stays and other invasive procedures. And yet he still he isn’t where we hoped he would be at this stage,” said Alisa Nelson, Charlie’s mom. “Our hope now, both for his quality and length of life lies in the medical advances that HeartWorks is doing to find a cure and new innovative ways of helping kids like Charlie.”

The Nelson’s learned about Charlie’s diagnosis at Alisa’s 20 week anatomy scan and as a Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit (NICCU) nurse at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Alisa understood the severity of the matter. Her home hospital has been the location site for Charlie’s major surgeries and clinical trial using stem cells from umbilical cord blood.

This past June Charlie turned five, a monumental milestone for Charlie and the Nelson family as the five year survival rate for patients with HLHS is 58-72%.  “His heart could fail tomorrow or could last until he’s 30-40; we just try to focus on the positive and enjoy the time we have with him while he’s here,” said Alisa in a CHLA article. “I made a conscious choice that I’m not going to live in fear anymore, I’m going to live in love. However long we get to have with him, we are happy.”

To continue to support Charlie and the research HeartWorks does to cure congenital heart defects, the Nelsons are excited to put together the upcoming softball tournament here in Burbank on February 3rd. Teams can register for the tournament at a rate of $400 a team which includes 12 complimentary tournament shirts and each team is guaranteed to play three games.  The divisions include Competitive, Rec, and COED, and all tournament games will follow Burbank Parks and Recreation Department’s adult sports men’s or COED slow-pitch softball league rules and regulations.

The tournament will take place at George Izay Park (Olive Park) at 1111 W. Olive Ave. in Burbank on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024 starting at 8:00am and food trucks will be on site during the day. Registration closes on January 27th. To register your team, click here! By joining the tournament you are not only paving the way for Charlie for the 40,000 babies born every year with a CHD.

Charlie’s dad, Matthew Nelson, has been playing softball through Burbank Parks and Rec for the past 15 years and started a men’s team called The MAGIK (Making Aches Go away In Kids) Pain team, coincidentally named after a CHLA pain management team. Matthew has also coached their daughter Edee’s softball team for the last seven years and coaches their other son, Samuel’s baseball team. As a huge Red Sox fan, Matthew along with his wife Alisa, are excited to start this tournament in honor of Charlie and share his love of softball and baseball with the Burbank community.

Charlie’s Champs Softball Tournament

The Nelson’s have raised $1,800 for their fundraiser so far but have a goal of $10,000. If you would like to donate to their HeartWorks campaign instead of signing up as a team, you can donate here, and there are also sponsorship opportunities available on their site here. HeartWorks works independently and collaboratively to develop therapies that use a person’s cells to enhance their existing heart muscle or grow new bathing heart muscles. Cameron, who died last month according to UCLA’s sports information department, was the oldest member of the Hall of Fame class.

A 1949 graduate of Burbank, Cameroon played halfback for UCLA from 1951 to 1953. He finished in the top six in the Hesiman Trophy voting. He was sixth in 1952 and third in 1953.

At UCLA, he earned consensus All-America honors in 1953 after leading the Bruins to the 1954 Rose Bowl Game against Michigan State.

He left UCLA as the school’s all-time leader in total offense with 3,332 yards. UCLA retired his jersey No. 34 and he was a charter member of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.

He was drafted in the eighth round of the 1954 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent one season with the Steelers and later played for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League.

Cameron’s induction is a surprise, as eligible candidates must have played college football within the last 50 years.

However, he was still elected as he met consideration by the Football Bowl Subdivision and Divisional Veterans Committee as he met the basic requirement of being a First Team All-America requirement. He was not listed on the 78-player ballot for induction.

The class of 2024 is impressive and also includes (in alphabetical order), Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State, Tim Couch of Kentucky, Warrick Dunn of Florida State, Armanti Edwards of Appalachian State, Deon Figures of Colorado, Larry Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh, Toby Gerhart of Stanford, Dan Hampton of Arkansas, Steve Hutchinson of Michigan, Antonio Langham of Alabama, Randy Moss of Marshall, Julius Peppers of North Carolina, Paul Posluszny of Penn State, Dewey Selmon of Oklahoma, Alex Smith of Utah, Kevin Smith of Texas A&M, Chris Ward of Ohio State and Danny Woodhead of Chadron State.

Coaches Mark Dantonio, Danny Hale and Frank Solich were also selected to the Hall of Fame.

Cameron will be inducted on Dec. 10 when the National Football Foundation holds its 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner presented by Las Vegas at the Bellagio Resort & Casino.

On January 9, a hearing had been scheduled for the adult charged in the triple vehicular homicide, Hamlet Arseni Aghajanyan, 19 years old, when he was arrested and who has remained in jail since. The hearing, however, has been rescheduled for March 13 in Downtown Los Angeles Superior Court.

Burbank Police Sgt. Stephen Turner reported that “The current ‘last day for trial’ is approximately May 8, 2024; however, that ‘last day’ date could change depending on case developments or counsel trial schedule”.

Sgt. Turner also reported that the juvenile court case status is unknown for the defendant, who was also charged for his part in the triple fatalities. He was reportedly two months from his 18th birthday, however its controversial and often criticized policy of Los Angeles District Attorney, George Gascon, to not prosecute minors in adult court.

It was scheduled to take place on Kemp-Kallem Field, but because of cold weather that brought dew and a slippery surface to the wrestling mat, the event was quickly switched to the small gym and in less than an hour and half, the Burbank High boys’ and girls’ teams outscored San Marino in a Rio Hondo League wrestling match on Wednesday night before a capacity crowd.

On Senior Night, the boys romped past the Titans 66-18 while the girls escaped with a 27-24 triumph.

At 110 pounds, freshman Austin Desai defeated Ava Tuag on a first-round pin while at 125 pounds, Burbank senior Leilah Hernandez lost to Madelyn Lopez in a third-round stoppage via pin.

“We’re especially happy for Austin getting the win at 110, and she’s been juggling two sports all winter [with basketball] and Kendall [Chapman] moving up a weight class to secure the girls’ dual meet win on her Senior Night,” Burbank coach Jonathon O’Brien said.

At 145 pounds, Chapman defeated Maila Arambela over a three-round decision.

There were several Burbank girls’ winners through forfeit, and they included senior Erin Sarkasian at 235 pounds, Malia Manibog at 100 pounds, Chloe Soza at 155 pounds, junior Isabelle Ruiz at 170 pounds and freshman Gina Horvath at 190 pounds.

In the boys’ division and at 165 pounds, Burbank senior Dylan Vo fell in a first round pin to Michael David and in the 175-weight class, and Burbank freshman David Antansyen pinned Sam Xia in the opening round.

At 190 pounds, Burbank sophomore Albert Airapetian won via a first round pin over Travis Aguirre.

San Marino’s Julian Solis was victorious after a first-round pin of freshman Andre Takhmasian at 215 pounds.

“Although he lost, Andre showed great promise at 215. He is just a freshman who gave a former league champion a handful,” O’Brien noted. “Dylan also moved up a weight class to challenge a state qualifier [Michael David] and we appreciated his sacrifice and toughness rather than us forfeiting the weight class.”

At 285 pounds, San Marino’s Matthew Negroe stopped Maxim Pogosyan in a first-round pin.

At 113 pounds, Burbank freshman Samvel Marutyan earned a first-round stoppage via pin over Henry Kang.

Burbank junior Nathan Hinojosa scooped up a third-round halting via pin over Tom Satterwait

At 132 pounds, sophomore Jayden De La Rosa took out Santiago Perez with an opening round pin.

Burbank junior Richard Kalajyan took a second-round pin of Jack Gregson in the 144-weight class and senior Vahagn Ghazaryan captured an opening-round victory with a pin of Christian Oliveros.

In the boys’ section, a number of Burbank wrestlers won by forfeit and they included junior Daniel Hambardzumyan at 106 pounds, sophomore Tyler Huo at 126 pounds, freshman Sevak Arakelyen at 138 pounds and sophomore Arnold Tarverdyan at 157 pounds.

“All our boys who won their matches have been working really hard since August – for a sport that traditionally starts in November – so each of those wins were well earned,” O’Brien pointed out. “Last year we lost that dual 39-32. I think the score this year shows we’re heading in a positive direction.”

Romney De La Rosa is the assistant coach for the Bulldogs and added his assessment.

“I am really proud of the accomplishments of our wrestling program this year, now in its second year,” he said. “We are actively solidifying our position as a reputable program which was seen on the mat tonight.”

De La Rosa then added: “Notably both league victories this year were losses in the previous season, bringing us to a commendable 2-0 record in league competition,” he stressed. “Standout moments for me include Kendall Chapman securing a crucial win for the girls’ team and Richard Kalayan’s impressive comeback from a near loss to secure a pin. The entire team did great.”

Burbank’s next match is next Wednesday versus 10-time league champion La Canada, who have dominated the league the last several years.
