While the Masters conducted its first day in Augusta, Georgia, the fifth Pacific League boys’ golf match took place at the DeBell Golf Club on Thursday afternoon and for Burroughs High’s Kodiak Hernandez and Arcadia’s Josh Kwon, each had an impressive outing, as both shot a 4-under-par 67.

Hernandez fired a 3-under-par 33 on the front nine where he eagled the par-5 No. 1 and the par-5 No. 8 and then shot a 1-under-par 34 on the back nine.

“I tried to hit the ball straight and just play the best I can. DeBell’s a tough course if you don’t hit it straight,” Hernandez said of the course’s challenges.

What makes DeBell so difficult? “How short and narrow it is,” he said. “You just have to know where to position the ball to play well.”

How was Hernandez able to overcome the obstacles?

“My wedge shots and I was putting really well on the greens even though my tee shots weren’t on point,” he noted. “I felt pretty confident especially coming around the turn. I play DeBell very often and it helps a lot because you learn where to put the ball, the distances and the greens.”

The Apaches, who are the defending league champions, are in first place this season and were the overall team winner after shooting 367.

The Indians took second place at 388 and are in second with two matches remaining on the regular schedule.

Burbank came in third place at 402 as J.J. Nakao fired an even-par 71 that included a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine.

“Overall I’m happy with my day, but I could have done a lot better,” Nakao said of his outing. “Midway through the round I could have focused a little more. Went shot-by-shot instead of thinking of the overall score.”

Does he also find DeBell especially tough? “It’s a pretty interesting course,” he said. “You’ve got to hit it straight every single shot. A couple of shots I hit left to right. You just have to take it stroke-by-stroke. I would say my long game saved me today. My putting was an issue.”

Ryan McGowan came into the clubhouse with a 5-over-par 76 for the Indians.

Lincoln Melcher finished with a 77 and Daniel Gonzalez capped his day with an 82 for Burroughs.

Trey Sanchez was next for Burroughs after shooting an 86, while Niko Coccio carded a 94.

Kevin Kienlen posted a 77 for the Bulldogs, and Ari Ahmed ended his 18 holes with an 82.

Burbank’s Frank Masyk closed out his day with an 83, Devin Blazon came into the clubhouse with a 89 and Hayden Chase shot a 102.

Crescenta Valley garnered fourth place with a 424 and was led by Hank Norman’s 76. Placing fifth was Pasadena with 477 as Jerome Dimalaluan paced the Bulldogs after shooting an 84.

Burroughs Baseball Struggles, Lose 12-0 To Visiting Arcadia

There are things that a baseball team can do to make it really difficult on itself like committing errors and issuing walks.

On Friday afternoon at Tomahawk Field, the Burroughs High squad did both as it kicked around the ball to the tune of five miscues and its pitching staff issued seven walks and to make matters even worse, hit three straight batters and in the process fell to Arcadia 12-0 in a Pacific League game that was cut to five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

“I’m not going to sugarcoat it. We had a bad day today, like every other team in baseball is going to have now and then,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said. “I’ve seen major league teams lose by 12 runs before. It happens at every level of baseball. You don’t want it to happen. You wish it wouldn’t happen, but it’s part of what sports is.”

Sherwood said he’s still proud of his team.

“They try and that’s all I can ask of them,” he noted. “Some days it’s not there. That’s a good team [Arcadia], but I think they’re beatable if we just play our good game. Teams go through good streaks and bad streaks. Right now we’re in just a little funk.”

The Indians (9-15 and 6-4 in league), who lost to the Apaches 11-1 on the road three days before, were able to garner only two hits off junior pitcher Chris Wilson and it occurred in the fifth inning when senior Nicco Chuidian led off with an infield single and senior Julian Jaramillo then lashed a sharp base hit to left field.

Wilson righted the ship and induced senior Andres Salazar to bounce into a double play and then retired senior Preston Lemus on a strikeout with the catcher applying the tag.

Otherwise, the right-handed throwing Wilson was perfect over the previous 12 batters, striking out seven over five frames.

The Apaches (19-1 and 9-1 in league) are ranked No. 43 in the nation and No. 12 in the state according to the sports website www.maxpreps.com and played like it.

In the first inning, Arcadia bolted ahead 1-0 as Chuidian surrendered a bloop single to right center by the leadoff hitter, senior Jeffrey Castillo.

An error on a pickoff throw sent Castillo to second base, junior Dustin Allen’s sacrifice bunt moved Castillo to third base and scored on a single down the left-field line by senior Dominick Tello.

“I felt we were still in the game,” said Chuidian, who allowed four hits with six walks and three strikeouts across three and two-third innings about the early portion of the game. “I was struggling on the mound, but my defense was trying to find ways to get me outs. But once again it comes down to hitting. We’re just not producing at the plate. I feel like we’re taking too many fastballs. Getting behind early in the count and not working the pitcher as much.”

The Apaches stretched their lead to 2-0 in the second inning when Chuidian walked senior Tyler Quintero, the first batter.

Chuidian struck out sophomore Brandon Nguyen looking and retired senior Frank Chavez on a fly to right field.

Three consecutive walks followed as junior Gavin Vogel, Castillo and Allen all drew a base on balls from Chuidian which plated Quintero.

“When they’re giving us free bases. We’re a pretty good team and it’s going to be tough to beat us,” Arcadia coach Nick Lemus said of the walks and errors by the Indians. “We’re good, no doubt about it. Baseball is just a funny game. Any pitcher can shut you down on any given day. You can hit balls hard and get outs. You can hit balls softly and find holes.”

Lemus wants his squad to do everything well. “It’s not about base hits, it’s about quality at-bats,” he said. “We do everything pretty well. We hit pretty well. We pitch pretty well. We stress the fundamentals.”

Chuidian began the third stanza by walking sophomore Mikey Easton, but struck out senior Jacob Lopez swinging. Quintero flied to left field and Nguyen whiffed to end the frame.

Two runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning as Castillo walked, stole second and scored on Allen’s long triple to left center. Allen came around to make it 4-0 on an error.

Arcadia sent 12 batters to home plate and scored eight runs in the fifth frame that included run-scoring singles by Quintero and Allen, Tello’s run-tallying double to left center, a run-producing walk by Castillo and junior Dylan Guerra getting hit with the bases loaded for a run batted in.

Senior Xavier Dubon ventured one-third of an inning, hit three consecutive batters in the fifth, yielded two hits and one walk, while senior Nathaniel Metz toiled one inning and allowed two hits.

Dellutri Gets His Wish in Middle School Track Meet

With his father’s record cemented in history, if there was one thing Jordan Middle School eighth-grader Ryan Dellutri wanted to do Friday night in the All City Middle School Track Meet at Burroughs High, it was to pull up alongside his father, Todd, a former Burroughs and USC standout.

The younger Dellutri accomplished what he set out to do, winning the 400 meters in a meet record 56.86 seconds.
“Since January I have been training two or three days a week to get ready for this,” Ryan Dellutri said. “I wanted to be side by side him with him. Since he has the 440 (yards), I wanted the 400 (meters).”
The 440 is no longer run since all events run on a track measured in meters.

The other star of the meet was Muir Middle School sixth-grader Carolina Leon, the younger sister of Burbank High distance running star Andres Leon.

Carolina Leon set records in the 1,600 and 800 meters, running 5:38 and 2:37, respectively.

Her times were not only the fastest of any girl, but she would have won all but the eighth-grade boys’ 1,600.
Also setting a meet record was Muir Middle School eighth-grader Sattwick Banerjee, who threw the shot 44 feet, 1 inch.

Below are the full meet results. Results for the 1,600 are listed as the mile.

Warner Bros. Burbank Expansion Includes Frank Gehry-Designed Buildings

Warner Bros. Entertainment plans to expand the Burbank footprint of the global entertainment company with two office buildings designed by Frank Gehry to be built between the Warner Bros. main lot and the 134 Freeway in the Burbank Media District. The studio also announced the purchase of a portion of The Burbank Studios on Alameda Avenue, the former site of NBC and The Tonight Show.

“This is an opportunity to re-imagine not only our workspace but our future,” said Kim Williams, Executive Vice President and CFO of Warner Bros. Entertainment. “Along with our historic lot, the newly expanded campus will fuel increased creativity, facilitate collaboration and help us attract and retain the world’s best and most diverse talent.”

“It will also better position our company for the future and provide for more production capacity,” Williams added. “This is an investment in our employees, our creative and business partners and the Burbank community that will continue to be our home for decades to come.”

The Gehry-designed building complex adjacent to the existing Warner Bros. main lot features a seven-story office building of about 355,000 square feet and a nine-story office building with approximately 445,000 square feet. The complex will be built according to LEED Certification standards.

Called the Second Century Project, groundbreaking is expected to take place in Fall 2019, with construction planned for two phases and expected to be completed by 2023, to coincide with Warner Bros.’ centennial celebration. Employees are slated to start working in the buildings as early as 2022.

“We are proud to continue our longstanding partnership with Warner Bros. which dates back over 30 years,” commented Jeff Worthe, President of Worthe Real Estate Group. “We are thrilled to deliver these iconic buildings to Burbank and can’t think of a better way to honor Warner’s past 100 years and celebrate their exciting future. We will add these buildings to our existing portfolio of outstanding office properties that covers over 4,000,000 square feet in the City of Burbank alone.”

“Once upon a time, Hollywood studios had an important architectural presence in the city – they were like monuments to the movie-making process,” said  Frank Gehry, Partner, Gehry Partners, LLP. “With this project, I was trying to recapture that feeling of old Hollywood splendor.”

“We wanted to create a 21st century version that would have a strong and unique identity for Jeff Worthe and for Warner Bros. in the center of Burbank,” Gehry continued. “We created large open floorplates with the single goal of creating the highest quality office space.”

“From the freeway, the buildings are composed as one long sculptural glass façade that creates a single identity like icebergs floating along the freeway. On the studio side, the metal punched façade is terraced to relate to the scale and character of the existing studio buildings.”

“Collaborating with Jeff Worthe on this project has been special for me,” Gehry also said. “He is curious and open to ideas. He takes the time to explore ideas with a thoughtfulness toward the community and those who will inhabit the building. He understands and promotes the idea that architecture has value.”

“I hope that we have created something that works well for Warner Bros. and that is respectful of the community around it,” he added.

Also part of the deal, Warner Bros. will purchase a portion of The Burbank Studios property, which is currently home to Blizzard eSports Arena, the iHeartRadio theater and Days of Our Lives. Those productions “have leases and will remain in place,” according to Worthe.

The Burbank Studios purchase provides Warner Bros. with additional production office space and eight sound stages (with room for expansion), along with a mill building and a commissary, according to the joint press release issued by Warner Bros., Worthe Real Estate and Gehry Partners.

Worthe Real Estate Group and Stockbridge real estate management firm will retain ownership of the land the two planned Gehry buildings will be built upon.

The intricate deal also requires Worthe Real Estate and Stockbridge to purchase in late 2019 three office buildings currently owned by Warner Bros. – the Triangle Building (4001 West Olive Avenue), Glass Building (3903 West Olive Avenue) and Wood Building (111 N. Hollywood Way), in addition to the 30-acre Warner Bros. Ranch located on Hollywood Way.

Warner Bros. will lease back the space from Worthe/Stockbridge until those employees can move to the new office space.

“The three existing office buildings will remain as such and leased out to new tenants, which could include Warner Bros.,” explained Worthe. “As for the Ranch Lot, we intend to carry out the entitlements that currently exist which is office and production spaces, much like The Burbank Studios development.”

The sale of the Ranch property and Warner Bros.’ purchase of The Burbank Studios are expected to take place in 2023, after Warner Bros. moves into the new space. The entertainment company also plans to move employees from other leased space surrounding the lot to the new campus.

Whether the expansion will result in the addition of more jobs and the development of new services and divisions for Warner Bros. is still “to be determined” at this point so early in the process, according to Warner Bros. Senior VP Worldwide Corporate Communications Paul McGuire.

“We are thrilled that Warner Bros.’ long-term plan includes an exciting new vision for their campus in Burbank,” said Burbank Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy. “This commitment further reinforces our City’s standing as the Media Capital of the World.”

The press release also stated, “Worthe Real Estate Group/Stockbridge, Gehry Partners, LLP and Warner Bros. will work closely with various agencies across the City of Burbank throughout the building process to ensure a compliant, community-conscious build.”

This article was updated at 10:36 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, to include Jeff Worthe’s comment that Blizzard eSports Arena, the iHeartRadio theater and Days of Our Lives “have leases and will remain in place.”

Burbank Baseball Allows Nine-Run Fifth, Falls 15-5 To Pasadena

An early four-run cushion by the Burbank High baseball team wasn’t enough production against visiting Pasadena in a Pacific League game as it dropped a 15-5, five-inning decision on Tuesday afternoon.

During the nine-run, fifth-inning outburst, Pasadena sent 12 hitters to the plate with eight reaching on hits that included a grand slam to right field by sophomore Michael Gonzalez, who finished with three hits.

Gonzalez’s base hit to center in the second at-bat of the frame scored a run as did senior Robert Olivades, junior Jon Luke Goldman (two hits), sophomore Jesus Zuniga (two hits including a triple) and senior Christian Zambrano (two hits that included a three-base hit).

Down 10 runs and in order to avoid the 10-run mercy rule, Burbank needed to score at least a run and came close.

Junior Dominik Severo led off with an infield hit, but was erased when junior Jakob Duarte bounced into a double play and when senior Cody Winters struck out looking, the game was over.

“We were missing a lot of pitches that were down and by us not finding that sweet spot, we were leaving the ball up and they were hitting the ball,” Burbank coach Bob Hart said. “I don’t think they’ve had that kind of offensive showing based on the stats that I’ve seen.”

Hart continued: “We didn’t deserve to win that game,” he noted. “It all works out the way it’s supposed to. When you get outplayed, you’re supposed to lose. And when you don’t do the basics, you’re supposed to lose.”

Burbank (7-12-1 and 7-4 in league) seized control 4-0 in the first stanza when it used three hits and a Pasadena error.

Junior Troy Lee’s two-out double to left center brought in junior Oaklee Spens (singled in the fourth inning), who reached on a two-base outfield error.

Senior Davis Mieliwocki was hit by a pitch and later came around to score on a single to center field by Severo.

Burbank stretched its lead to 4-0 on Winters’ double to left field that scored Lee and Severo.

Pasadena cut into the advantage 4-1 in the second when junior Hugo Escobedo lifted a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Zambrano, who lined a one-out triple to left center.

A four-run third inning by Pasadena (11-11 and 6-5 in league) made it 5-4 as 10 batters made their way to home plate that included three hits and two Burbank errors.

Senior Christian Perez’s scoring fly brought in sophomore Jackson Stuart, who doubled to left field to begin the inning.

Zambrano’s force out scored a run and Escobedo’s base hit to left field also knocked in a run.

“We’ve never had an offensive game like that today, so it was very fun to watch,” Pasadena coach Mike Parisi said. “We’ve been working hard on keeping the ball out of the air and trying to hit line drives and let the ball travel.”

Parisi, who was at Pasadena for eight years and two at LaSalle, has guided the Bulldogs to the CIF Southern Section playoffs seven of the eight seasons, knows that nothing’s guaranteed.

“If you don’t come to play, any team can beat anybody,” he pointed out. “There’s a lot of baseball left. There’s three games left. Every game’s a dogfight. We’re fighting to get into the playoffs.”

Burbank, which committed three errors to a pair for Pasadena, leveled it at 5-5 in the third when senior Daniel Ruiz opened up with a single up the middle, took second base on an error, third on Lee’s single to right field and scored on Severo’s grounder.

Senior Andrew De La Torre ventured two and two-third innings while giving up four hits and one walk.

Junior Josh Balos worked one and one-third innings, surrendered four hits and absorbed the loss.

Sophomore Ryan King toured one-third of an inning and yielded five hits and a walk and senior Joey Clark went two-thirds of an inning and gave up two hits with a strikeout.

Goldman worked an inning, hit a batter, walked a batter and allowed three hits, senior Jordan Zach tossed three innings, striking out four with a walk and three hits allowed and was credited with the win and senior Gavin Nouskajian pitched one inning, gave up one hit and fanned one.

Last November the Burbank High baseball team made a short trip over to Mc Cambridge Park to watch the Veteran’s Day ceremony.
The trip ended up creating a relationship between the Bulldogs and the Burbank chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Prior to the start of their recent home game with Hoover High, the Bulldogs got to pay their respects to the veterans once again, as some of them participated in throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. The veterans then stayed to watch the Bulldogs earn a Pacific League victory over the visiting Tornadoes.

“A lot of the veterans thought it was nice to see the team spend their time with them,” said Mickey DePalo, who is the Captain of Burbank VFW.
DePalo was one of two veterans who threw out first pitches. He threw to catcher Alberto Ayala and fellow Veteran Larry Christensen was lucky enough to throw to his grandson, Bulldog catch Dominik Severo.
Through the help of parents, the VFW sponsored a fundraiser for the Bulldogs following their participation in the Veteran’s Day event.
Junior Josh Balos talked about the experience.
“Coach (Bob) Hart just told us one day that he wanted us to go to the event to support the veterans because they all fought for our country and they fought for us,” Balos said. “So we went down there and realized how many veterans there are in this community.”
Teammate Willem Clendenin said he has also enjoyed the experiences the Bulldogs have had with the veterans.
“It was a great experience,” Clendenin said of the event at Mc Cambridge Park. ” I think there is mutual respect. They’ve made the ultimate sacrifice and we showed them what we could do and we came out with a win.”

Maya Wilson is just a junior at Burroughs High. But she wanted to make sure she went into her senior year as hands down the greatest female swimmer in school history.

So Wednesday afternoon she did just that in her home pool.
Wilson set two more school records to give a school record in every individual event. Her efforts helped Burroughs win 96-70 over Burbank. The Bulldogs returned the favor in the boys’ varsity competition, winning 109-54.

“Today I just wanted to have fun and see what I could do. I came here and put on a suit and swam as fast as I could and it turned out well I guess,” said Wilson, who now holds Burroughs records in all eight individual events. “I enjoy doing the other strokes just to see how fast I can go.”

Wilson swam the 100 backstroke for the first time this season and won in 1 minute, 1.06 seconds, breaking the 2005 school record of Olga Sepa of 1:01.86.
Wilson lowered her own school record in the 200 individual medley by winning 2:09.85. Her previous school record was 2:12.81.
Wilson was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team with Lilliana Noriega, Elana Merritt and Emanuella Nathan (1:59.87). Wilson, Madeline Spangler, Nathan and Noriega teamed up to win the 200 free relay (1:48.37).

Burbank High got double individual victories from Michelle Morlock, who won the 50 in 26.62 and 100 freestyle (58.40). Fellow Bulldog Emily Udall won the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.
Burroughs’ Spangler won the 200 freestyle (2:12.92) and Merritt took the 100 breaststroke (1:19.97).
Burbank dominated in the boys’ competition.

Burroughs’ Reigh Abaoag won the 100 butterfly (54.57) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.15) and the Indians won the 200 free relay as Burbank won the remaining events.

David Lee won the 50 and 100 freestyle. Arsen Rostomyan won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
Ashot Gavurmadzhyan won the 200 individual medleys for the Bulldogs. Ryan Feldman was victorious in the 200 freestyle.
The Burbank boys’ team finishes the Pacific League season with a 4-2 dual meet record. The Burbank girls’ team finishes the league season at 2-4. Burroughs finishes the season with a 4-2 mark for the girls’ team and a 3-3 mark for the boys’ team.

The first time the Burbank and Burroughs boys’ tennis teams got together this season, the Bulldogs earned a road win on a tiebreaker.
But in the return leg, Burbank left no doubt as to which was the stronger team, winning 13-5 over the visiting Indians.
“I think we just honed in about playing and not worrying about the score and worrying about if we were losing or not,” Burbank’s Parker Katz said. “With my partner Dominik we just said get your serve in, play the point and go point by point, game by game . Last year it was a really intense match and I think last month there was a lot of tension (too). It was a big match.”
Burbank (8-4 in league) won seven sets in doubles and got six more in singles.
Burroughs (6-6) got a sweep in singles from No. 1 player Sam Bernardy, who is a sophomore.
He won 6-2 over Burbank freshman Yesh Desai, 6-2 over Burbank’s Abasi Abukusumo and 6-0 over sophomore Hakop Kerimyan.

“I thought I was playing well. I came (ready) to practice this week,” Bernardy said.
Desai defeated Burroughs No. 2 Kyle Lester, 6-1 and No. 3 player Blake Hildebrandt, 6-0.
Abukusumo, who is a sophomore, defeated Lester, who is a freshman, 6-4. Abukusumo also defeated Hildebrandt, who is a sophomore, 6-1.
Kerimyan, who is a sophomore, defeated Lester 6-4 and Hildebrandt, 6-0.
In doubles, it was Burbank’s No. 2 team of Katz and Sumera, who earned a sweep.
The pair of juniors opened with a 7-6(8-6) win over the Burroughs No. 2 team of senior Cameron Flowers and junior Sebastian Muga.
They earned a 6-4 win over the Burroughs No. 1 team of senior Mark Do and sophomore Trieu Nguyen. They defeated the Burroughs No. 3 team of Daniel Cho and Rafael Munguia 6-4. Cho ad Munguia are both seniors.
“It was a tough match especially because our first two sets went pretty far in,” Sumera said. “I think it was the longest my partner and I have played in one day.”

The Burbank No. 1 doubles team of senior Ethan Lee and Sid Denduluri won 6-0 over Do and Nguyen. They defeated Flowers and Muga 6-1, but fell 6-3 to Cho and Munguia.
The Burbank No. 3 team of senior Michael Westwood and junior Daniel Khrlobian fell 6-0 to Cho and Munguia. Senior Greg Gevojanyan replaced Westwood for the other two sets.
He and Khrlobian defeated Do and Nguyen 6-3 and defeated Flowers and Muga 6-1.
Burroughs, which finishes fourth in league, is expected to get a wild card into the CIF playoffs.
“I think we have a good chance of going deep into the playoffs,” Bernardy said. “I think we’re deeper than we were last year.”

More than 200 students at John Burroughs High School left their fourth period class early and joined the Walkout Against Gun Violence today, Friday, April 19, to ask for gun legislation reform.  U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff and California State Assemblymember Laura Friedman spoke at the lunchtime rally held by the Burroughs High Students Against Gun Violence Club.

Several dozen members of the Burbank community also joined the students at the rally on Memorial Field.

“It was an honor to be with the students participating in the Walkout Against Gun Violence,” commented Schiff. “Across America, students and families have responded to the tragedy of gun violence with strength, resolve and a clear message to Congress – enough is enough.”

“They made it clear they want meaningful action from elected officials—across the country, at every level – in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and our entire society,” he said.

Students left class about nine minutes early in protest, according to JBHS Assistant Principal of Athletics and Activities, Robyn Anders. There were no repercussions handed out for leaving class early to join the Walkout Against Gun Violence.

April 20 is the 20th anniversary of the Columbine school shooting, in which 13 people were killed and more than 20 others were wounded. Students at schools around the U.S. are holding walkouts and rallies on April 19 and 20 to call attention to the impact of gun violence and their desire for gun legislation reform.

The Burroughs Students Against Gun Violence Club has about 101 members, according to President Zachary Hagen-Smith, a senior, who welcomed students to today’s rally.

“This is about freedom. Freedom to go to school in safety,” commented Hagen-Smith. “For officers of the law to do their jobs in safety.”

“For all Americans to live their lives without the lingering threat of shootings,” he added. “Until we have legal preventatives against gun violence on a national level, we cannot be truly free.”

Senior Cheyenne Arroyo sang the National Anthem and Mahmoud El-Farra, Co-Political Director, March for Our Lives California, then talked to the assembled students and adults.

Members of the Students Against Gun Violence Club, juniors Arya Desai, Babbette Wagner and Ariana Kretz, then spoke.

Assemblymember Laura Friedman talked to the students and community members, followed by senior SAGV member Louis Zekowski, who also spoke on behalf of SAGA, the Straight And Gay Alliance Club.

Sophomore SAGV member Reese Coblentz and senior Kalea Neiviller, who’s also Vice President of the Club, then said a few words.

Congressman Adam Schiff concluded the rally with his remarks.

“Gun violence is a public health crisis across our country and it’s preventable,” said Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale, CA District 43).  “Safe storage, universal background checks and other common sense measures can save lives and it’s time for our national leaders to stand up to the NRA and take action.”

“I’m grateful for the energy and commitment our youth have shown towards ending gun violence,” Friedman also said. “We need to learn from them and renew our commitment to ending the steady stream of senseless tragedies that have plagued our nation for far too long.”

Burbank Unified Superintendent Dr. Matt Hill, Board of Education Clerk Steve Frintner and Burroughs Principal Deborah Madrigal were also in attendance.

“I was really impressed to see so many young people come out to demonstrate today,” Schiff said, noting he was pleased to see great leadership by the students in organizing and holding the event.

“Young people like the students at Burroughs are changing the conversation about gun violence,” added Schiff. “They have launched a movement to change minds, to change laws and to force adults to reckon with the effect that weak gun laws have had on our country. And I know they are just getting started.”

Burroughs Baseball Comes From Behind And Wins 4-2 Over Crescenta Valley

Any win is always welcome, but a victory against a quality opponent is even more meaningful because it’s a signature win.

The Burroughs High baseball team hasn’t had any signature wins this season, but collected its first on Friday night against Crescenta Valley at Stengel Field.

Trailing 2-0 after three innings, the Indians scored over the next three frames including a two-run sixth and walked away with a  4-2 triumph in a Pacific League match.

“We had this circled on our calendar for a long time because this was supposed to be our home game today,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said. “And CV switched it on us and I wasn’t happy about that, but I told our guys we can go to their place on Friday night and make it our game. And that’s what our guys did tonight. I am so proud of every player. So many players who don’t get to play. Every player here stepped up and did a great job. It was a compete total team win.”

Sherwood spoke about what this victory could mean.

“Every year I talk to our team about a signature win and it usually comes earlier in the year and you build off it,” he said. “Well it didn’t and our guys hung in there. We got that signature win tonight and that can take you a long way.”

Burroughs (10-17 and 7-5 in league) will pay a visit to city rival Burbank (8-12-1 and 8-4 in league) next Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start and then host the Bulldogs on Friday with a 7 p.m. first pitch.

The fateful sixth began with senior Preston Lemus hitting a bloop single to center field and racing to third base on a double down the left-field line by junior Hyatt Entz.

In two previous at-bats, Entz struck out both times, but in that at-bat seemed laser focused against junior reliever Chad Ruf, who took the setback after hurling one-third of an inning, allowing four hits with two walks.

Senior Rio Lopez, a pinch hitter, followed with a sharp single up the middle that scored Lemus to make it 3-2.

Senior Brian Garcia struck out for the initial out, but senior Michael Le’s perfectly executed push bunt brought in Entz for a 4-2 advantage.

Neither team scored in the first or second inning, but the Falcons (17-7 and 10-2 in league) made it 2-0 in the third when junior Isaac Sung walked with one out and raced to second and then third on a wild pitch that junior catcher Albert Prado couldn’t find.

Junior Will Grimm bounced to Lemus at second base, who decided to throw home to Prado, hoping to get Sung, who was safe.

Crescenta Valley’s lead expanded to 2-0 when senior Brian Ghattas roped a two-out double down the left-field line as Grimm crossed the plate.

Burroughs sliced the lead in half in the fourth inning when senior Julian Jaramillo singled to left field with one out.

Jaramillo scooted to second base on a passed ball and senior Nicco Chuidian, who singled in the seventh, and senior Andres Salazar both walked. A fielder’s choice by Lemus scored Jaramillo.

The fifth inning began with much promise as senior Dylan Rolando singled to open the frame, but Garcia, who singled in the third, bounced into a 6-4-3 double play.

Le walked and took second base on a wild pitch. Senior Collin Johnson walked and Jaramillo singled to right field that sent Le to third base. When Chuidian drew a base on balls, Le scored to even the game at 2-2.

Chuidian was the starting pitcher, went three innings, striking out three with one walk and one hit batter with two hits allowed.

Senior Xavier Dubon toured one inning and surrendered one hit and senior Nathaniel Metz tossed one inning, hit a batter and picked up the win.

Jaramillo was given the save after working two innings, walking one, hitting one batter and yielding one hit.

Sophomore Noah Maddox went four and two-third innings, allowing three hits, with five strikeouts and four walks for the Falcons.

Senior Chris Lawson fanned one across one frame and junior Logan Tourville hit a batter and struck out a batter in one inning.

John Burroughs High School unveiled their new, colorful pool deck murals on Wednesday, April 17, during the JBHS – BHS swim meet. Designed by senior Ella Jennings, who was also lead painter on the project, the murals came together in just a few weekends with the help of several Burroughs students and parents.

The pool deck murals are “an effort to beautify the pool deck and bring some school spirit,” commented JBHS Aquatics Board President Julie Thomas. “Our booster club… wanted to highlight and beautify the pool deck to reflect how hard our student athletes work. Make their home away from home inspiring and not just functional.”

Burroughs senior Ella Jennings poses with one of the murals on the JBHS Pool Deck she designed and painted. (Photo By Ross Benson)

Assistant Principal of Athletics and Activities, Robyn Anders, presented the sketches to BUSD administrators and the Board of Education, got approval for the murals and helped get the process underway.

Using a combination of District funds and JBHS Aquatic Booster funds, the pool deck beautification included costs for the mural painting (approximately $600 for supplies) and a new school record board to be dedicated in May.

Jennings, who has made a name for herself as an artist at Burroughs, was also a member of the JBHS water polo team for her freshman, sophomore and junior years.

“I knew what I wanted to do for the concept almost immediately since I was inspired by the intensity and fluid movement the players take in both swim team and water polo,” explained Jennings.

“The concept designs took about 10 hours from sketch to finished product. After they were approved by the School Board, scaling the designs up to mural size, sketching and painting them took two weeks with the help of volunteers.”

Those volunteers included sophomore sister Lottie Jennings, who is also a member of the JBHS water polo  and swim teams, and sophomore members of the JBHS aquatic program Grace Mokracek, Chrissy Vlick, Emily Callahan, Sura Sohi, Tara Sohi, Maddie Spangler, Angie Lee and Bella Mucha.

Freshmen Evelyn Bresee and Bethany Salas, juniors Mallory Thomas and Bella Hedman and seniors Jaelynn Bijasa and Katie Vlick, also JBHS Aquatic program members, added their help with the paint brushes.

Jennings “had complete artistic direction in terms of design, overseeing the painting, delegating tasks and more refined aspects such as selecting paint colors and materials and embellishing the final details.”

“I was very grateful for the support of my art teacher, Mina Ho Ferrante, who advised me on the mural process, as well as the enthusiastic volunteers,” she said.

Jennings is available for commissioned art pieces and notes her current work can be found on her public Instagram account @ellaillustrates.

After graduation she plans to attend Westmont College in Montecito as an Art and Psychology double-major with the goal of becoming an art therapist. She also plans to attend graduate school, earn a doctorate degree and become a licensed art therapist.

“Designing and painting the murals was a wonderful opportunity,” Jennings added. “I am honored to leave my unique mark on the school, as well as to help inspire a greater appreciation of the JBHS Aquatics programs.”

Students and teachers at Burbank High School dedicated a new mural made in collaboration with Nickelodeon interns and artists on Thursday, April 18. Students from all of the Burbank High School Arts programs, including dance, film, instrumental and visual arts disciplines, celebrated with performances and an open-air art and performance space at the after school event.

The huge mural covers the quad-facing façade of the Building 2 Arts Building and wraps around towards the Wolfson Auditorium entry way.

“The mural represents the spirit of creativity that is the foundation of our arts at Burbank High School,” commented Jonelle Pickett, BHS Animation & Sculpture Instructor. “It is the determined thought, reflection and revision, combined with skill and dedication, that allows ALL our student artists to envision and produce extraordinary representations in a variety of artistic formats.”

“While our art forms may look divided by discipline, we are actually at root very much united in our quest to allow our students powerful ways to envision ideas and express themselves,” she added.

“Dance, drama, vocal and instrumental music, digital design and film arts, broadcast journalism, drawing, painting, sculpture, animation, and theater tech – our students find their place to belong, to create and to shine.”

“The new mural acts as an umbrella that reminds us of this unity as it now greets students to class and guests to performances,” Pickett said.

The mural was sponsored by Nickelodeon Community Efforts (NICE) and is the first student-designed and -led NICE mural project.

Senior Ana Cristina Varela, a fourth year BHS Animation student, designed the mural and “ran the entire project – from concept meetings, material lists, and scheduling to directing the painting process –  and also oversaw all the mural designed artwork,” explained Pickett.

About 20 Nickelodeon interns and artists and more than 35 Burbank High School Animation and Sculpture students worked together over one week to bring the mural to fruition.

“BHS students were side by side with interns and artists, discussing their passion for their art form, as well as educational pathways and future possibilities,” added Pickett. “This mural transformed a space as well as minds.”

Burbank High Animation students also created a short film, t-shirts and a Snapchat filter to promote the BHS Arts collaboration.

Burroughs Boys Volleyball Beats Burbank, Wins League Title Again

The biggest question many wondered Tuesday night was how the Burroughs High boys’ volleyball team would bounce back from its first league loss since 2013, as the Indians fell on the road last week at Arcadia.

Although they weren’t consistent throughout, the Indians did enough to earn a Pacific League title for a tenth straight season with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-13 win over visiting Burbank High.
“All teams face adversity in season. Teams aren’t judged by their wins but how they come back from their losses,” said Burroughs 6-foot-4 sophomore Kade McGovern, who had a match-high 16 kills. “I think we did a good job of that tonight.”

Burroughs (19-12 overall, 11-1 in league), came out strong in the first game.

Burbank tied the Indians for just one point, as Luca Bily served an ace to make it 4-4.
But the Indians fought right back and won the first game with relative ease.

“Establishing the middle at the start was a huge thing for us. That’s what we talked about that we wanted to do,” Burroughs Coach Joel Brinton said. “That allowed Connor (Burroughs) and Kade to hit well the rest of the game. Our attacking was vastly improved from where it was against Arcadia.”

Burbank (15-11, 7-5) put forth a fine effort in the second game. The Bulldogs led 13-10 following a kill from Dylan Viyar. Burbank also led 16-13, before Burroughs fought back to get on level terms.
McGovern served up an ace to make it 17-17.

Troy Outwater had a kill to give Burroughs a 21-20 lead and helped make it 22-20 with a block.
Jagger Green finished off the game with a kill.

“We’re trying to build that culture of a never gives up mentality, that fighting mentality,” Burbank coach Karl Rojo said. “That’s what I want these kids to act like when they’re playing on the floor. We had it in the second and we kind of lost it with our unforced errors and hitting mistakes in the third. You have to give it to Burroughs. They did serve tough and hit pretty well.”

Burbank took a 4-3 lead in the third game on an ace from Chase Marcy.
But McGovern had kills on the next two points to help push the Indians back in front for good.
“We talked about it as a group. That streak doesn’t matter. None of them were here for that,” Brinton said. “The streak that mattered was getting a league championship this year and keeping that streak. We learned a lot from it and I think we made some steps in the right direction today.”

Burroughs received nine kills from Connor Burroughs. Carter Cottrell had 27 assists, Sam Tipton had 12 digs and Green had seven kills.

Bily led the Bulldogs with five kills. Viyar added three kills for Burbank. Jason Kwon had eight assists.

Burbank Baseball Wins Thriller, 3-2, Over Visiting Burroughs

There’s something magical it seems when the Burbank High baseball team plays in a Pacific League game and it’s a one-run differential.

On Tuesday night, the team participated in its eighth such contest and came away with its seventh victory after defeating visiting Burroughs 3-2 in eight innings before a capacity crowd.

Runs and hits were somewhat hard to come by, but errors seemingly weren’t as each team had four.

The eighth inning began with sophomore Ryan King drawing a walk off senior Julian Jaramillo, who took the loss after working one and one-third innings while walking three.

Burbank pitcher Andrew De La Torre went eight innings and allowed four hits and two runs. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

King stole second base and senior Davis Mieliwocki, who belted a towering home run to right field in the fourth that tied it at 2-2 and singled in the first, was intentionally walked.

“We definitely settled down and Andrew [De La Torre] pitched a really good game so we had to pick him up with the at-bats,” said Mieliwocki of Burroughs’ two-run first.

Mieliwocki then spoke about his long homer.

“I knew he was going to give me a pitch to hit,” he said. “I just remember getting a pitch I could handle and doing damage with it.”

Both runners then moved up a base when senior Daniel Ruiz laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt.

Junior Troy Lee stepped into the batter’s box and hit a ball back to the pitcher, who didn’t handle it cleanly as King raced home with the winning run.

Bob Hart, the Burbank coach, thought that Burroughs would walk the bases loaded and one out to force a play at home plate or a double play that would end the inning.

“I kind of thought they would do that,” he said of the strategy. “They were all pumped up. It’s a big Burbank-Burroughs game,” he said of the longtime rivalry that can be tough on your nerves. “You try to not panic. You take a business-like approach.”

The Indians (10-14 and 7-6 in league), who will host the Bulldogs (9-12-1 and 9-4 in league) on Friday night at 6 p.m., bolted ahead 2-0 in the first inning with the assistance of two Burbank miscues.

Julian Jaramillo was tagged with the loss. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Junior Brian Garcia lined to center field and senior Michael Le struck out looking by De La Torre, a senior who went eight innings.

“I don’t really focus on throwing hard as long as I’ve got defense,” said De La Torre, who yielded four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. “Yes, I was tired. I always want a chance to get my team through.”

Senior Collin Johnson walked and Jaramillo drilled a double down the left-field line.

Senior Nicco Chuidian was safe at first base when two errors were committed on one play as both runners crossed the plate.

“We took the lead because they threw the ball around,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said. “We average about two runs a game and our pitching is just over-taxed when they have to be perfect on the mound all the time.”

Sherwood, whose team is hitting a collective .230 with a team pitching staff earned-run average of 2.50, then added: “You’ve gotta play defense and you’ve gotta score runs. There’s three things in this game. Pitching. Hitting and defense.”

Burbank shortstop Ryan King making the throw to first base. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Sherwood said he should have pulled senior Xavier Dubon after three innings.

“That’s on me,” he pointed out. “They had a left-hander leading off and he struggles with left-handers. Our kids play hard. Our kids play well. I’m proud of our kids. I’m proud of all our guys.”

The Bulldogs came up with one run in the first inning with one out as  King was safe at first base on an error.

Mieliwocki’s single to center field off Dubon, who toiled four innings, striking out one with four hits surrendered, moved King to third base and cut the lead to 2-1 when Ruiz was safe on a force out.

After fanning senior Preston Lemus swinging and getting junior Hyatt Entz to ground to third base, De La Torre walked junior Albert Prado, but induced Garcia to bounce to third base.

Dubon worked a perfect second inning as junior Dominik Severo grounded to third base. Junior Jakob Duarte grounded to second baseman Lemus, who made a spectacular play, and senior Cody Winters grounded to first base.

De La Torre faced five batters in the third as Le walked to begin the frame. De La Torre whiffed Johnson swinging and Jaramillo popped up to the pitcher.

Both Burroughs and Burbank were a bit sloppy defensively as each committed four errors. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Chuidian was safe on an error as Le moved to second, but the inning ended when senior Andres Salazar popped up to shortstop.

Junior Aidan Gonzalez led off the third with a single to left center, but junior Oaklee Spens bounced into a double play and King hit back to De La Torre, who tagged him.

Lemus flied to center field to lead off the fourth and Entz was aboard on an miscue. De La Torre hit into a double play to end the frame.

Dubon is a submarine-style hurler and left an offering slightly up and in where Mieliwocki likes it and sent the pitch high and deep over the fence.

Dubon faced seven batters in the fourth inning as Burroughs committed two errors and beside the homer, allowed only a single to Severo.

De La Torre saw Garcia bounce back to the box and Le fly to center. Johnson walked, but Jaramillo flied to center.

Chuidian replaced Dubon and worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning as Spens flied to center, King lined to second base and Mieliwicki fanned, catcher to first base.

The Indians collected two hits in the sixth off De La Torre as Chuidian had an infield single to lead off the stanza and Lemus added a one-out base hit to left.

Salazar, the second batter in the frame, struck out swinging, while Entz was safe on a fielder’s choice as Chuidian was out at third base. Prado’s liner to second base concluded the inning.

Chuidian tossed another perfect inning in the sixth when Ruiz flied to left field, Lee fanned swinging and Severo lined to center field.

Garcia opened the seventh inning by grounding to shortstop, but Le roped a single to right center. The inning was over when Johnson bounced into a double play.

Jaramillo took the mound in the seventh inning and issued a leadoff walk to Duarte and senior Vincent Romano entered as a pinch runner.

Pinch hitter, junior Tyler La Marsna, grounded into a force out, Gonzalez grounded to second base and Spens bounced to Jaramillo.

De La Torre worked a perfect eighth frame as Jaramillo was out on a terrific stop and throw by King, the shortstop.

Chuidian, who fanned two hitters across two innings, lined to second base and Salazar popped to second.

Student artists from Burbank and John Burroughs High Schools joined together to for an event to share their work for the Portraits of Kindness program on Wednesday, April 10, in the Steve Campbell Library at JBHS. For the 2018-19 school year, the student artists based their artwork on photos of Rohingya children from Myanmar who are currently living in refugee camps in the neighboring country of Bangladesh.

“Students at both schools join together (a citywide connection through art) to culminate each year’s project with a celebration and evening of education about the country,” explained Burroughs Library Coordinator Julie Grene. “Participants and their parents are invited to watch the video of the children, sample some food from the country, discuss their experience, scrapbook keepsake photos and often hear a guest speaker from the country.”

“Part of the project is learning about the culture of the country, what circumstances have caused these children to be in the difficult situation they are in and how we can help.”

Guest speaker Ko Ko Naing, president of the Los Angeles Rohingya Association (LARA), spoke at the Burbank Portraits of Kindness event about his personal experience regarding the crisis taking place in Myanmar, with the ongoing oppression, abuse and genocide of the Rohingya ethnic minority.

Student artists for 2019 include Alexandra Cadena, Aliza Pino, Allison Hilliard, Amanda Silver, Amy Berberyan, Amy Martinez, Andrea Diaz, Andrea Ramos, Crystal Hopper, Daniel Poghosyan, Ella Jennings, Hannah Macaranas, Isabella Bullock, Jagger Guerin, Jami Anne Calimlim, Jon Heidenreich, Karla Linares, Katie Allen, Madison Nagashiki, Maggie Kusumonegoro, Megan Knutson, Megan Ng, Priscilla Sandoval, Reagan Shippey, Rebecca Butterworth, Ruby Gara, Sam Cruz, Samantha Leano, Sarah Thomas, Tiffany Rodriguez and Yejee Schulze.

Burroughs photography students who were also involved with the project are Gabi Williams, Alexia Calderon, Soroya Gonzales, Anika Maskara, Lakely Nealis, Madison MacNeill, Marisa Belle de La Torre, Michael Altawil and Karina Montes.

Grene and art teacher Dena Williams began the Portraits of Kindness program at Burroughs High in 2011, working with 18 students to create portraits for children living in Sierra Leone. Over the past eight years, 335 student artists have created portraits for children in 12 countries including Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Madagascar, Peru, Colombia, Ukraine, Nepal, Syria and Myanmar.

In 2016, Burbank High joined the Portraits of Kindness collaboration, directed by BHS Library Coordinator Alicia Boote and art teacher Rebecca Platner.

The Los Angeles Rohingya Association (LARA) was founded in 2012 in response to the genocide and human rights violations in Myanmar. They work to advocate for and document the case of the Rohingya people’s oppression and to monitor the situation of human rights of Rohingya and other ethnic minorities in Myanmar.

“This group has worked directly with the refugees in Bangladesh where our portraits were delivered this year,” explained said Grene. “So it was educational to have someone here who has been there.

The Rohingya, who have been living in Myanmar since the 8th century C.E., have been denied citizenship in their country since 1982 and have faced not just systemic discrimination and lack of rights but more recently have be subject to ethnic cleansing and genocide, according to the United Nations. More than one million Rohingya were living in Myanmar before the police and army began a campaign of violence against them in late 2016. In a few short months, from August to December 2016, an estimated 625,000 people fled the country, most to neighboring Bangladesh.

The Portraits of Kindness program is facilitated by The Memory Project, a charitable nonprofit organization started in 2004. Through the organization, teachers and their students create and donate portraits of children around the world who have endured neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence and extreme poverty.

“Given that youth in such situations usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with meaningful mementos of their youth,” said Grene. “Each year, the portraits go to different countries across the globe.”

“The project also allows students to practice kindness, empathy and global awareness while enhancing their art and portraiture skills. This project is open to all students, regardless of enrollment in an art class. In addition, our students learn about the particular country, its people, its economy, its geography and also what has caused the children to be in this situation.”

“Individuals from the Memory Project go to visit group homes, orphanages and refugee camps to take photos of the children and send them to the participating schools. The artwork is finished by the determined deadline based on their travel back for delivery.”

“The portraits are then hand delivered directly to the children. A video is made of the joyous occasion, which is then shared back with us. We like to think of this as a global connection through art,”she added.

“Many of our students contribute to the project in multiple years,” Grene also said. “Creating a portrait is an intimate endeavor through which our students create a bond with the child.”

“Even though they will likely never meet, both the child and artist will carry this memory with them throughout their lives,” she added. “The most important aspect of this project is that students who participate do this work from a place of caring in their hearts.”

UMe Credit Union announced its new fundraiser for the Burbank Educational Foundation (BEF), benefiting our Burbank Unified School District. The “15 For 15 Challenge” seeks to raise $15,000 from 15,000 UMe members for the 15,000 students in the Burbank Unified School District.

Additionally, UMe will match donations up to $15,000 for the BEF, a local organization that provides assistance to BUSD through important teacher grants and more.

UMe supports area charities and organizations through its UMeHelps initiative. However, The BEF’s mission to promote excellence in Burbank schools is particularly special to the credit union. UMe was started by a group of Burbank teachers in 1940, and the credit union regularly supports local schools, including $5,000 in scholarships for Burbank high school students.

UMe’s CMO and VP of Marketing, Anita Hutchinson commented, “UMe is thrilled to help the BEF give teachers and students in Burbank the tools they need to thrive. The fact that they serve 15,000 students in Burbank and we have 15,000 members seemed like the perfect opportunity. We saw that there was a real need for support, but also a community large and generous enough to rise to the occasion.”

“The 15 For 15 Challenge” is ongoing, but UMe intends to make it an annual fundraiser, increasing its target every year as the credit union’s membership grows.

UMe members and the Burbank community can make donations online by visiting www.BEFgives.org/UMeMatch

There wasn’t a lot of drama in the Pacific League swimming finals as Crescenta Valley High, a longtime power, had its boys’ and girls’ team each place first on Thursday at the Burbank pool.

The Falcon boys’ squad collected 685.5 points and the girls’ crew finished with 502 points.

Arcadia, another perennially strong school, had a strong showing as the boys’ and girls’ team each took second with the boys’ getting 614 points and the girls’ picking up 469.5.

Burroughs and Burbank also fared well in the meet as the Indian boys’ team placed fifth with 254 points and the girls’ squad grabbed third with 272 points.

“I thought the teams did really well. A lot of PRs (personal bests). Three school records broken. Overall I’m proud of them,” Burroughs swim coach Jacob Cook said.

The Bulldog boys garnered third place with 309 points and the girls nabbed fourth with 173.5 points.

Burroughs junior Maya Wilson took first place in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 59.68 and was second in the 500 yard freestyle (4:59.37).

Wilson is also part of the 200 medley relay team that was second (1:56.95) and included freshman Lilliana Noriega, freshman Elana Merrit and junior Emanuella Nathan.

Wilson is on the 400 freestyle relay squad that included sophomore Madeline Spangler, junior Isabel Oporta and freshman Kelly Long that finished third (3:59.67).

“It was a great practice day because some of my races were what I wanted them to be and others were not. This is just leading up to CIF which is where I’m going to be the most rested,” Wilson said of her day’s work. “It was a good, but not a great day.”

Wilson said she was tired coming into the meet. “I felt terrible,” she noted. “I would say mostly physically and obviously that would play a role in my mentality. When I’m going through my resting periods leading up to big meets like CIF, my body fluctuates a lot and some days I’ll be extremely sore and some days I’ll not be sore at all.”

The Burbank foursome of senior Michelle Morlock, junior Simone Bethel, senior Emily Udall and junior Geneva Bethel were fourth (2:04.32) in the 200 medley relay.

Udall placed sixth (1:05.79) in the 100 butterfly and grabbed third in the 500 freestyle (5:39.61).

In the 100 butterfly, Burroughs senior Samantha Leandro was 13th (1:24.12) and Burbank senior Sharlene Nazari picked up 16th (1:31.32).

Burroughs Softball Takes Out Host Burbank 7-1

There were two vastly different emotions on display after Thursday night’s Pacific League softball game at McCambridge Park.

After the final out was recorded on a grounder to third base, the Burroughs High team and its faithful were elated after a 7-1 win over city rival Burbank.

Of course, there was dejection in the Bulldogs’ dugout, but at least one game remains when the CIF Southern Section playoffs begin with sites and matchups to be determined in the next few days.

Isabella Kam allowed five hits across seven innings for Burroughs, which won 7-1 over Burbank. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

The Indians (12-10 and 10-4 in league) also have an important postseason game next week.

The contest was nip-and-tuck after three innings as the Indians led 2-1, but a run in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh would put the game out of reach.

Junior pitcher Isabella Kam was in the circle and hurled with cool confidence, allowing no hits in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh inning.

“Yes, honestly I was in the beginning because it was my first actual Burbank-Burroughs game where I’m pitching,” said Kam, who went seven innings with five hits yielded, five strikeouts and two walks of her early nerves. “It was kind of nerve-wracking for me, but I had a few girls calm me down and that was the most important thing, calming down.”

The Indians forged ahead 3-1 with a tally in the sixth inning as junior Sabrina Englebrecht’s single to center field off senior Alyssa Porras scored junior Chloe Bookmyer, who drew three walks and led off with a base on balls.

Porras has been a workhorse and was on Thursday, touring seven frames, giving up eight hits, walking three and striking out two.

“Last year Allie [Benson] motivated me so much because I always wanted to be the pitcher. I always wanted to start every single game. This season, everyone was hurt. Savannah [Benson] was hurt, Alex [Davis] pitched, played center and short,” Porras said. “I have to act like I wasn’t tired even if I was just so I could finish the game.”

The next inning was the backbreaker as Burroughs trotted eight hitters to the plate that included a two-run single to right center from senior Sierra Harvey (two hits) and a two-run base hit to left field by senior Megan Williams (three singles).

In the third, the Indians marched ahead 2-0 on a two-run homer by Kam as junior Memorie Munoz came around to score after reaching on an error.

“I’m just so happy that I did really well,” said senior Mia Storer, the center fielder who had tears in her eyes. “I’m so happy. I’m a four-year player and this means so much for me and to play really good in the last Burbank-Burroughs game. This will stay with me forever.”

Storer had two sensational catches including a running grab off the bat of senior Amaya Broyls in the fifth inning for the first out and a diving stab off the bat of senior Sarah Garelick in the sixth for the first out and sophomore Erika Montoya on base after an infield single.

The Bulldogs (11-12-1 and 8-6 in league) shaved the lead to 2-1 as Montoya’s hit brought home senior Desi Gomez, who singled.

“It’s always tough to lose your final league game on your home field,” Burbank coach Mike Delaney said. “At some point we didn’t do what we were supposed do to.”

Davis singled in the first inning and left with an injured shoulder and Broyls also singled in the first inning.

Burbank Police Officers and Staff Honored at Police Foundation’s Fifth Annual Luncheon

On June 19, 2018, JAY BOGAN was at Burger King, expecting to enjoy a nice meal.  He wasn’t expecting to witness a maniac suddenly attack an elderly man and repeatedly stab him in the face.  But for Bogan, to see was to act.  He immediately rushed toward the assailant, hitting him with a chair and wrestling him to the floor.  Bogan proceeded to disarm him and keep him pinned until the police and paramedics arrived.

The elderly man had sustained serious injuries, but Bogan’s courageous intervention had saved his life.  Bogan had received minor injuries, a fortunate outcome given the risks of violent confrontation.  But when the police acknowledged his heroic actions, Bogan demurred.  “Isn’t that something everyone should do?”

But risking your life to save that of a stranger is not something that everyone does.  And when a citizen actually takes that risk, it is a cause for public recognition from those who make it their profession to protect and serve.

And so Bogan received the Citizen Award for his “selfless service to the community” at last Thursday’s Burbank Police Awards Luncheon at the Marriott Burbank Hotel, hosted by the Burbank Police Foundation.

Burbank Police Officer of the Year John Embleton ( Center) Photo by Ross A Benson)

Among those honoring Bogan was Officer of the Year JOHN EMBLETON.  He had been driving along the I-5 when he came across a bad traffic collision.  He found out that a murder suspect had fled from Sacramento hours earlier in one of the vehicles.  The suspect realized he had been made.  He fled on foot.  Officer Embleton gave chase and nabbed the suspect before he could do any more harm.

Officer Embleton joined the Burbank Police department in 2005 and is currently a member of the SWAT team. Since 2010 he has also been a K-9 handler, working closely with his four-legged partner Bran.  His peers cite his “relentless work ethic and positive attitude.”

Both Police Sergeant JAMAL CHILDS and Jailer KIRK DAVIS received Lifesaving Medals for “actions resulting in the saving or preservation of human life.”  On December 20, 2018, Sgt. Childs saw a man climb over a railing and sit precariously on a sign overlooking the I-5.  At a time when many were enjoying the holiday season, others were feeling only suicidal despair.  Sgt. Kirk recognized the sign sitter was one of them. He quickly grabbed the man and pulled him to safety.  If the suicidal man had fallen onto the freeway, he could well have ended more lives than his own.

When Jailer KIRK DAVIS ushered a distraught inmate into the cell after booking for domestic violence, his instincts told him to check up on him frequently.  And indeed, within minutes the inmate had turned his shirt into a noose around his neck, with the other end wrapped around a nearby faucet. But Davis, true to his gut feeling, arrived in time to stop the inmate from hanging himself.  Paramedics confirmed that the inmate had sustained only minor injuries.

Other awards were directed to outstanding team efforts. “For extraordinary efforts earning the esteem of your colleagues and community,” several officers received the Professional Esteem Award for their work as members of the Burbank Police Gang Unit: Officers DUSTIN RODRIGUEZ, HARRY MARKEY, PAUL FRENCH, COREY CHEFALO, AARON DENNING, and PIETRO PIRA.  Since 2016, these officers have been fighting gang-related crime at the street level. They’ve succeeded in reducing gang graffiti by 83%, in making over 600 arrests and in significant recoveries of illegal firearms.

For her work in handling the high volume of court summons and navigating the Superior Court system generally, Police Technician HELEN QUACH was honored as Non-Sworn Employee of the Year.  Her colleagues universally recognize her as “knowledgeable, responsible and reliable.”

Recognition also extended to City employees who have offered substantial assistance to the Police Department.  As Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy remarked, “It’s a testament to the Burbank Police Foundation and all their supporters that they recognize staff from other City departments who assist police in catching perpetrators and solving crimes.”  She continued, “And it’s a credit to our whole City and the men and women of the Burbank Police Department.”

Traffic Signal Operations Specialist and Public Works Department employee RICHARD LOCKYER received the Professional Esteem Award for assisted police in over 500 investigations this past year. Lockyear helped them glean valuable evidence from traffic cameras throughout the City.

Information Technology Department employees were among those receiving Professional Esteem Awards for their successful efforts to transition the Police Department from paper to digital when making daily field activity reports.  Awardees included project manager LIEUTENANT JOHN PFROMMER, Crime Analyst KEN PANU, Assistant Director of Technology JASON  MILLER (IT),  Network Systems Analyst GAREN ESSAKHANIAN (IT), Network Systems Analyst SEVAN KHACHATOURIANS and Volunteer ELAINE STEVENS.

In view of the ongoing adoption of improved technology, it was particularly appropriate that the awards luncheon remembered retired Police Chief GLEN BELL, who had died last January.  Serving as Burbank’s Police Chief from 1982 through 1990, he had been instrumental in pioneering the Police Department’s transition to modern, digital-based methods in reporting, data gathering and data analysis.  On his watch, he had also instituted the gang detail and the helicopter program.

Volunteer of the Year recognition went to KAYE NORRIS, who has been volunteering for the Police Department since 2007.  She has helped with a variety of activities, including answering the phone and helping with the citation paperwork.  The other volunteers look forward to “Kay Days,” when her unfailingly friendly and upbeat demeanor brightens the whole office.

Receiving “Gold” recognition for 500+ hours of volunteer service were ELAINE STEVENS and the aforementioned KAYE NORRIS.

Receiving “Silver” recognition for 250-499 hours of volunteer service were JOHN KEMMERER and TED SCHONLAW.

Receiving “Bronze” recognition for 100-249 hours of volunteer service were ANNE WHITE, JACKIE LIGHT, LINDA TRONCONE, and SUNNY SINGER.

Burbank police Foundation President Cristina Spratt did the welcomes and introductions, followed by a rousing pipe-and-drum rendition of patriotic tunes by the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society.  The Burbank Police Department Honor Guard (Sgt. Chris Canales, Officer Harry Markey, Officer Jesse Horn and Officer Paul French) did the Presentation of Colors.  Father David Bedrossian gave the Invocation, and Police Chief Scott LaChasse introduced his command staff.  President Spratt introduced the Chief’s Circle Sponsor Cusumano Real Estate Group, represented at the awards ceremony by Michael Cusumano.  Noted radio personality Jim Roope served as Master of Ceremonies.

The awards ceremony was the fifth hosted by the Burbank Police Foundation, a community-based organization seeking to cultivate closer partnerships between the Police Department and the community it serves. Judging by the caliber of the award recipients, the partnerships are close indeed.
