After the death of Mayor Will Rogers in April, Vice-Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy stepped in to finish the term.  On Tuesday, May 1, at the annual Council Reorganization meeting, she was voted in unanimously by her fellow Council members as Mayor for the coming year.

Sharon Springer was nominated by Jess Talamantes to assume the roll of Vice-Mayor and was also voted in unanimously.

This is the first time that two woman have been named to the top two spots at the same time.

Burbank’s Mayor is a position rotated to different Council Members each year when they meet on May 1 to reorganize.  The position of Mayor is mostly just ceremonial and is basically the face of the council at community functions and chairs council meetings.  The Mayor will, however, set the tone at those meetings.

Gabel-Luddy was first elected to the council in 2011.

According to her bio by the City of Burbank, she “was born in Los Angeles and raised in the communities of El Sereno and Glassell Park where she attended public schools. A graduate of Occidental College, she earned a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts.

She began her career working for local government as a landscape professional designing small parks. After two years, she joined the Planning Department in the City of Los Angeles where she gained more than 30 years practical experience working with diverse communities to address a full range of planning and land use issues.

Her service to Burbank began a decade ago when she was appointed to the Planning Board. During that time, she also served the community as a member of the Blue Ribbon Task Force for Affordable Housing and the Sustainable Burbank Commission.”

During the meeting, former Mayor Will Rogers, who lost his battle to cancer a few weeks ago, was remembered by the Council, staff, and representatives of different elected officials who came to speak. The meeting was adjourned in Roger name.

First up for the Council will be to name a new member to take over for Rogers remaining term that will end in 2019 and what may be a very contentious budget battle.

The Luther Burbank Middle School Theater Department presented The Wizard of Oz on April 26, 27 and 28 at the school auditorium. Directed by Stefanie Enokian and Tony Redman, the musical also featured appearances by fourth- and fifth-graders from Edison, Bret Harte, Roosevelt and Providencia elementary schools.

A total of 63 students participated in the show, including 36 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders and 27 elementary students.

“This is the first time we have done a production with Luther students and elementary students combined and it was a great success,” commented Enokian, a Teacher on Special Assignment for Burbank Unified as the Engagement Structures Coach.

Enokian, who also teaches the ASB Leadership class and the Strategies for Success Intervention class at Luther joined forces with Redman, the Vocal Music and Intro to Musical Theater teacher at the school, to direct and produce the musical.

Redman directs four choirs, including three competition show choirs which have won several awards over the years.

Enokian noted the success of the show relied on the help of many, including her father, Andy Enokian, Sr., who built most of the set pieces. Several Luther staff members sewed costumes, painted sets and applied makeup to the young thespians.

“Our Parent Production Coordinator, Elisa Hemingway, organized the help of many parent volunteers to supervise children during rehearsals and performances, bring snacks for the kids, work concessions and ticket sales and anything else we needed,” she said.

The Burbank Arts For All Foundation provided a grant to help the department purchase new microphones for the performance.

The Wizard of Oz is a show that is very close to my heart,” commented Enokian. “As a child, it was always my favorite and from the day I began helping with Luther’s Musical Theater Department, I also dreamt about bringing my favorite musical to life on our stage and that dream came true this weekend.”

“This production was a huge undertaking and I thank my partner in crime, Tony Redman, for being by my side during the whole process and allowing me to see my grand ideas through,” she continued. “All of his work with the kids on the choreography and vocals made each performance a magical experience.”

“As for the cast, we could not have selected a better group of kids. They were fun to direct and are incredibly talented. Each person had the perfect part of their style and personality.”

“The countless hours spent on making costumes and props, and designing and painting sets were worth every second,” Enokian added. “I could not be more proud to be part of this production and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

“Momnipresent” Storytelling Show Raises Funds For Family Service Agency

Ten Los Angeles storytellers gather for Momnipresent, a collection of true stories of mothers and motherhood, at The Colony Theatre on Sunday evening, May 6. Proceeds from the show will go to support Burbank’s Family Service Agency.

“I’ve been sharing my own stories on stages across Los Angeles for several years now and I’ve always appreciated the connections that are made by revealing our own truths, whether they be a funny experience or something more challenging but relatable,” commented director and producer Suzanne Weerts. “And in our modern, often disconnected world, it is a powerful thing just to sit and listen.”

“I’m thrilled to be giving our cast of ten wonderful storytellers the opportunity to bring their beautiful stories to the Burbank stage and to wow our audience with their humor and vulnerability. No doubt there will be several stories that will particularly resonate with each person in the theater.”

Suzanne Weerts (Photo by© Ross A Benson)

“Supporting the important work that Family Service Agency has been doing in our community for the past 65 years makes this benefit show all the more meaningful to me and to our cast,” Weerts added.

“We all recognize the importance of mental health care and want to ensure that the many people who use FSA’s services will be able to change the narrative in their own lives due in small part to the money that we raise.”

Local musicians Connie Nassios and Ken Berry will play a set in advance of the storytellers taking the stage.

“In many ways, the journey of motherhood feels like improvisational acting on a world stage,” said college professor and storyteller, Ryane Nicole Granados. “For this reason, I love the idea of gaining inspiration and courage from other moms as we share our stories of motherhood in Momnipresent.”

“Instead of the critical eyes of society or self-imposed criticism from ourselves, for one night I look forward to giving my fellow mamas the round of applause they all deserve!”

Weerts returns on June 3 to The Colony Theatre with a new cast of storytellers sharing tales of fatherhood for Manecdotes. Folk musician Robert Fisher Morgan opens that show.

General admission tickets are $25 each and available here.

Man Threatening Security Guards at Metrolink with Pellet Gun Arrested

On Wednesday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m., Burbank Police responded to a call about a man possibly holding a gun near the Metrolink Station on Front St.

One of the first units on the scene was Burbank’s Air Unit and the Tactical Flight Officers in the helicopter saw the man who appeared to be holding a handgun aimed at two security guards. The suspect was seen getting into a minivan and leaving the Metrolink Station. Responding officers witnessed the van get on the I-5 freeway and pulled it over south of Alameda Ave. The minivan turned out to be an Uber.

Police detained the driver and discovered a pellet gun inside the vehicle, which resembled a real handgun.

The suspect has been identified as Anthony Barraza, 23 of Sun Valley.

It seems that an argument between Barraza and Metrolink security guards over a smoking ordinance allegedly caused him to lash out and threaten them with the pellet gun.

Before leaving the Metrolink Station, the suspect attempted to get into another vehicle by displaying the pellet gun at a driver.

He was arrested and booked for attempted carjacking and criminal threats.

Barraza is currently being held on $100,000 bail and is due in court Friday, May 4.

Burroughs High senior Jagdeep Chahal began the school year not even guaranteed of being the best distance runner in his school.

Now with graduation just weeks away, Chahal has not only become the best Burroughs distance runner, but he is now one of the elite runners in not just the Pacific League, the CIF Southern Section or the state. Chahal is one of the top runners in the nation.

Thursday night in the Pacific League Finals at Arcadia High he won a pair of league titles in capturing the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs.

“I’ve always been working hard since my sophomore year,” said Chahal, who said he didn’t do any significant running before he started high school. “It doesn’t feel like a big difference this year, but the times my coach gives me I’ve been hitting faster times than that. I was feeling pretty confident that I’d have a good season, but I didn’t know it was going to be this good.”

Chahal won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 21.1 seconds.  He won the 3,200 in 9:13.24.

Burbank High’s Sergio Aguilar achieved something he was hoping for in taking both league titles in the two hurdles events.

“It only took four years, but I finally managed to clutch it out and win today,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar won the 110 high hurdles in 15.51 seconds and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.37.

Also winning a varsity league title from Burbank was freshman Tamryn Betts in the girls’ high jump. She cleared 5 feet.  Burbank sophomore James Smyth won the boys’ discus (143-6).

From Burroughs, teammates Alex Akobian and Elizabeth Switzer shared the league crown in the girls’ pole vault, each going 11 feet.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Shaft in Burbank

When one thinks of Burbank the first thing that comes to your mind would not be the Theme from the movie “SHAFT”, but yet they are!

The iconic theme song was written and sung by Isaac Hayes and was a big hit, rising to # 6 on the Billboard charts. The song also won an Academy Award for best original song.

The first thing that strikes you about the song is its opening guitar line accentuated by a device known as a WAH WAH PEDAL invented by guitarist Del Casher who is a personal friend of my co-author Wes Clark.

But what makes this a “Burbank Thing” is the fact that Wah Wah Pedals were made right here in Burbank by Tel-Ray Electronics on Victory Blvd. as I recall.

If you are not familiar with the song or what a Wah Wah sounds like here is a link, take a listen! The video is of Isaac conducting the recording of the song as he also wrote the score for the movie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YGsKpdIork

The song is also considered by many to have been the first Disco style song recorded. SO, next time you hear this on your satellite radio 70’s on 7 think of “Beautiful Downtown Burbank”

Before the arrival of Warner Bros. and Walt Disney, First National Pictures built  its original studio lot on Olive Ave in 1926. For over sixty years, Lockheed Aircraft Company produced some of the nation’s best airplanes where the massive Empire Shopping Center now stands. Heavyweight champion James Jeffries turned his Burbank ranch home and barn into a beloved landmark and boxing venue. Inventor Joseph Wesley Fawkes’s scheme to build a monorail to Los Angeles became a local laughingstock.  Diehard Burbankers Wes Clark and Michael McDaniel collect these and many more forgotten local stories where they can finally be found.

Burbank, Burroughs Swim Teams Fare Well In Pacific League Finals

Under favorable weather conditions, the Pacific League swimming finals was held at Burbank High on Thursday and the team standings and individual races went essentially according to form.

Two league records fell as Burroughs sophomore Maya Wilson placed first in the 200 yard freestyle after coming in at 1.51.73.

The old mark was held by Crescenta Valley’s Heather MacDougal, who swam 1.51.76 in 2013.

The other record smashed was by Crescenta Valley freshman Amanda Petersen, who won the 100 breaststroke (1.05.16), breaking MacDougal’s 1.05.23 in 2013.

Petersen was a double winner after also taking the 200 individual medley (2.08.45).

Wilson placed first in the 500 freestyle (4.59.15) and was part of a foursome that took fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4.03.62) that included senior Marlena Skrabak, senior Bianca Sanchez and junior Aleah Orozco.

Wilson was on the team that garnered fourth in the 200 medley relay (2.06.71) that included senior Annabelle Morning, Skrabak and sophomore Emmanuella Nathan.

“I went in trying to have no expectations,” Wilson said of her day in the pool. “I was just trying to improve, whether it was my times or my mindset. After I finished, it was a moment of relief.”

Wilson then added: “Working in practice every day. Seeing if I can improve every day. I try to stay in the moment and focus on the now,” she noted. “I focus on how I can improve my race. I’m focusing on CIF and see what I can do. I’m pushing myself to new limits in all my practices or trying to.”

Burbank sophomore David Lee also had a day to remember and was another double winner after taking first place in the 50 freestyle (23.05) and the 100 freestyle (50.17).

“I felt all sorts of emotion and excitement,” Lee said. “I think about the long run. How fast I want to get two years from now and how do I have to train every single day to get to achieve that process. Get to that level. I try to train as hard as I can every single day to get to that level. One hundred perfect effort.”

Lee was a member that included senior Isaac Yang, junior Dorian Andrei and sophomore Ryan Feldman that garnered third place in the 400 freestyle relay (3.28.66) and part of a squad that included freshman Arsen Rostomyan, junior Gevorg Vardanyan and Yang that grabbed fourth place in the 200 freestyle relay (1.36.19).

As far as team standings, the Burroughs girls’ varsity placed third with 196 points while Burbank was fifth (173 points).

The Burbank boys’ varsity took third (248 points) while Burroughs was sixth (157 points).

“We had mostly all best times today,” Burbank coach Cody Parker said of his teams. “Obviously we had David Lee win two individual events and the boys’ 200 individual medley got consideration. So there’s a lot to be proud of as a team.”

Burroughs coach Jacob Cook was pleased with Wilson. “Maya is very impressive,” he noted. “Maya did some incredible stuff. She puts in the work. Her talent is just insane. She’s special. I just told her before the race, to go for it.”

Cook spoke about his teams. “There’s a lot of PR’s today,” he said. “A win for me is not just scores, but it’s to beat individual times.”

The Crescenta Valley girls’ varsity took first with 558 points, Arcadia grabbed second (474), Pasadena was fourth (178), Hoover sixth (153) and Glendale nabbed seventh (139).

In the boys’ varsity, Crescenta Valley was first (571), Arcadia took second (420.5), Hoover was fourth (165.5), Glendale placed fifth (161) and Pasadena took seventh (110).

Other strong outings included Burroughs’ junior Reigh Abaoag taking second place in the 100 yard butterfly (52.89) and third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1.01.31).

The Burbank foursome of junior Michelle Morlock, sophomore Simone Bethel, junior Emily Udall and senior Angelica Perez took third in the 200 medley relay (2.04.86).

Udall also placed third in the 500 freestyle (5.46.97), sixth in the 100 butterfly (1.04.99) and was part of a foursome that included sophomore Simone Bethel, sophomore Geneva Bethel and Morlock that finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (4.12.83).

In the boys’ 200 medley relay, the team of Rostomyan, Feldman, Andrei and Vardanyan finished third (1.45.87).

Other solid placings included the Burroughs team of junior Isaack Dowling, Abaoag, junior Arshak Berberyan and junior Nathan Gault-Crabb that grabbed fifth in the 200 medley relay (1.50.39).

Burroughs freshman Madeline Spangler was seventh in the 200 freestyle (2.15.16) and Burroughs freshman Isabelle Mucha was 10th in the same race (2.19.35).

Feldman finished in fourth place in the 200 freestyle (1.49.82) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1.05.12).

Morlock was fourth in the 100 freestyle (59.02) and ninth in the 50 freestyle (27.05).

Gault-Crabb was eighth in the 50 freestyle (24.14), while Andrei was eighth in the 100 butterfly (58.08) and eighth in the 100 freestyle (52.88).

Burroughs freshman Nicolai Lazarev nabbed eighth place in the 500 freestyle (5.34.48).

The Burbank team of sophomore Geneva Bethel, Simone Bethel, sophomore Grace Tomasek and sophomore Angelina Chavez finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay (1.57.59).

Dowling, sophomore Arthur Eldridge, senior Scott Sauve and senior Daniel Marinero took seventh place in the 400 freestyle relay (3.46.92).

With on site beer brewing tanks gracing the northern side of the dining room and roomy bar, the Burbank location of Simmzy’s Pub is part urban brewery, part family restaurant and a completely cool spot for a drink or a bite.

As part of a mini-chain including six southern California locations, Simmzy’s Pub in Burbank boasts a beach-themed menu, along with a deep list of beer, wine and cocktails. Featuring several made on the premises, in addition to a longer list of selections from other brewers, there’s a lager, stout, IPA, ale, porter or Belgian-style beer for every mood and taste.

Simmzy’s menu is also fairly comprehensive, with bar favorites, including burgers and fries, along with healthy salads, sandwiches, soups, pizzas and daily specials.

We’ve enjoyed Simmzy’s a lot over the years since its opening, and even though the place can be crowded at times, we wanted to share the pub’s good vibes and good menu.

Recently, we’ve really been into Simmzy’s namesake brews, in particular the Tips Up IPA, Tide Pool Pale Ale and the Scandi-Lous Double IPA.

15 Minute Wings are spicy sweet. (Photo By Lisa Paredes

Our favorite pizza continues to be the amazing Arugula Salad Foldover, with baby arugula, goat cheese, red peppers, olives, roasted tomato and basil pesto topping an airy mozzarella flatbread. Fold a piece in on itself, and voila!, a perfect bite of textures and tastes awaits.

We’ve tried a few burgers as well, and they do tend to get a little messy. They certainly are tasty, though.

The 15-Minute Wings are definitely worth the wait, with a slightly sweet and spicy gooey coating and a side of cooling blue cheese dressing for dippping.

The Grilled Salmon Sandwich is absolutely excellent – Cermaq Farms sustainable Atlantic salmon, with pastrami spice, mustard, Russian dressing, red cabbage slaw and cucumber in between two slices of marble rye bread. It’s a creative combination of flavors that holds up to the last bite.

Servers and hosts are friendly. There’s free parking in the adjacent lot, but it tends to get full quickly at peak times. Bathrooms are unisex and pretty clean. The pub is open and airy and cheerful, with lots of good vibes.

REVIEW: And a Wonderful Wizard it was at Luther Burbank

Luther Burbank Middle School put on a truly wonderful Wizard of Oz last weekend, wowing packed audiences with a delightful retelling of the beloved story.  Co-directors Stefanie Enokian and Tony Redman loaded the show with great production values: charming sets, imaginative costuming and hilarious “special effects,” including looming images of a decidedly boyish wizard and actors’ heads popping up inside the wicked witch’s crystal ball.

They also loaded the musical with talented performers, many of whom will be able to hit the ground running as they start to participate in Burroughs High School’s nationally acclaimed show choirs and dramatic productions.

The toughest song, Over the Rainbow, came early in the show, slightly ahead of the tornado.  Madeleine Barrera nailed it.  The audience cheered. Barrera’s Dorothy had got them over the rainbow and into Oz.

Crows Julia Narmore, Maria Stefanie and Savannah Stotts for being laugh-out-loud funny. (Photo by Ross A Benson)

Other stand out performances included Kaylor Toronto’s Scarecrow, who exhibited intelligence and physical comedy in equal measure; Rhett Hemingway’s fully-realized and exuberant Cowardly Lion; and Sonya Dadekian’s Glinda, who invested her good witch with a serene dignity.  And a shout out to wiseacre Crows Julia Narmore, Maria Stefanie and Savannah Stotts for being laugh-out-loud funny.

Many of the Munchkins (and other ensemble characters) were, well, munchkins. They came from Luther Burbank’s feeder elementary schools of Bret Harte, Edison, Providencia, and Roosevelt.  Five years from now, these youngsters will be tormented by their parents gushing to friends, “Here’s Clarissa when she was eight. Isn’t she just the cutest flying monkey?”

The program for Wizard of Oz is high school quality, as was the sound and lighting.  The students know that the community is taking them seriously.  So they take their work seriously.  No flubbed lines. No wandering attention.  Being professional.

This is no mean feat for elementary and middle school students. The young performers have achieved a solid baseline from which their talent can continue to unfold.  So maybe 15 years from now, Clarissa will be touching a print of her awful flying monkey photo for good luck on the opening night of her first on-Broadway performance.

Wizard of Oz is a great choice for a middle school performance.  The central character, Dorothy, is a tweener who’s learning that her family’s power to protect her has its limits.  Her aunt and uncle can’t shield her from the malice of a woman “who owns half the county” and Dorothy takes their lack of power to be a lack of love.  She runs away, angry and bitter. But then Professor Marvel cleverly draws out Dorothy’s concern for her aunt.  She heads back home, trying to outrace a tornado that can’t be pleaded with.

Dorothy’s knocked unconscious. And the dream journey that follows is one of the great tributes to a young woman’s imagination. Confronted with the chaos that bad people and capricious nature can inflict, does she become like the Wicked Witch of the West or like Glinda? Dorothy’s journey to Oz is a journey within, a journey where she finds her way back home and understands it for the first time.

Performing Wizard of Oz was also an artistic voyage, one that the young cast navigated with brains, heart and more than a little courage. Bravo.

Burbank and John Burroughs High School instrumental and vocal music students join with professional musicians from the Los Angeles area for the one-night-only concert Music Is Instrumental – An Evening of Music from Film & Television on Friday evening, May 11.

Featuring works by John Williams, Lalo Schifrin, Peter Boyer and Carl Orff, Music Is Instrumental – An Evening of Music from Film & Television is the culmination of a year-long campaign to raise funds to repair and replace instruments for the middle school and high school music programs in the Burbank Unified School District.

“This concert is going to be an incredible celebration of what can be accomplished when many groups rally around one cause!” commented Burbank Unified Arts & Career Technical Education Coordinator Peggy Flynn.

“Composers John Williams and Lalo Schifrin have donated the rights to play some of film and televisions most iconic themes –  our choirs and instrumental students have never sounded better and the opportunity to collaborate and perform with their professional mentors will be something not to miss! The rehearsals alone gave me chills.”

“We are so grateful for the support we are receiving from our business and non-profit partners – especially Musicians at Play Foundation founders Don and April Williams, 1000 for $100 Chairs Michael Cusumano, Michael Hastings and Linda Walmsley, the L.A. County Arts Commission, County Supervisor Barger and Burbank Arts For All Foundation for their commitment to our students and the Music is Instrumental campaign,” Flynn added.

Several professional musicians from the Musicians at Play Foundation will perform with the first BUSD All-District Symphonic Orchestra and Choir, which makes their concert debut Friday. Composer Peter Boyer guest conducts.

“We have had the privilege to work with BUSD which supports our mission to build communities through music and foster the next generation of Los Angeles musicians,” commented Musicians at Play President April Williams. “The students will perform with their mentors from professional orchestras of John Williams, Michael Giacchino, L.A. Chamber Orchestra and more.”

Band, orchestra and show choirs from both BHS and JBHS open the concert. Producer and songwriter Toft Willingham will emcee the event.

A silent auction, featuring an original Star Wars score signed by John Williams, a John Debney-signed score of “Teamwork Reprise” from Sponge Bob Square Pants and instruments contributed by the Federation of Musicians Local 47, will be held. Nickelodeon is also an event sponsor.

The Music is Instrumental campaign has raised approximately $111,000 so far, with about $9000 more needed to reach the initial goal of $120,000 for the first year of the campaign. More information on the District’s efforts can be found here.

“It has been incredible to work with Musicians at Play to create a final celebration concert for this year’s Music is Instrumental campaign,” commented Justin Klotzle, Burbank High School instrumental music teacher.

“The community’s support of BUSD arts programs is overwhelming, and our staff, parents, and especially students, feel the difference,” he also said. “For our students, being able to play John William’s music alongside pros while celebrating a massively successful fundraiser is a phenomenal experience that we hope to continue in the future.”

“Working with BUSD and the young gifted people from Burbank High School and John Burroughs High is such a pleasure,” said Musicians at Play Advisory Board member Don Williams. “It restores my faith in the younger generation’s ability to perpetuate the art of music.”

“It is our job as teachers and mentors to make sure the art of music fuels itself to survive the passage of time,” he added.

Tickets for the Music Is Instrumental – An Evening of Music from Film & Television concert are $15 general admission, $50 VIP and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available online now or at the box office night of show.

The concert will be held in Wolfson Auditorium at Burbank High School and begins at 7:30 p.m.

Brett Carroll’s “School of Show” Was A Showstopping Smash

Director Brett Carroll’s “school of show” was definitely in session last weekend at Burbank High.  The “Stand Up and Make a Change” Pop Show 2018 was awesome.  Many of the acts—especially the In Sync finale–would’ve passed muster in Vegas as a family-friendly lead up to a celebrity headliner at one of the major casinos.

Yes, the students are that good.  The least experienced singers, the mainly freshmen, and sophomores of Out of the Blue perform at the level of talented juniors and seniors at other schools, and they have the trophies to prove it.  The other groups—In Sync, Sirens, Gentlemen’s Octet, Impressions and Sound Dogs—perform at the college level: really good college level, making Burbank High’s show choir one of the best in the nation.  (For example, among other awards Sound Dogs won first place in the Advanced Men’s Division, besting the second place group by 50 points.)  Everyone proved equal to the show’s demanding choreography, much of it created by the students themselves.

(Photo by © Ross A Benson)

And as for the amazing soloists…let’s just say they would’ve given the prima donnas of Glee a run for their money.

The production values are no less impressive.  High school students are running studio-quality sound and lighting and Burbank High graduates are now doing the same at places like CalArts and major studios.  The costuming, makeup and staging was professional grade, reflecting the dedication of Vocal Music Association parents and alumni.

From the opening number to the finale, both the harmonies and enunciation were very precise, never slipping into muddiness. There were some impressive vocal ranges on display as well.  That level of performance comes from countless hours of practice and encouragement.  It also comes from a high level of camaraderie among the performers, one where star turns and ensemble efforts complement rather than compete with each other.

(Photo by © Ross A Benson)

Brett Carroll, his staff, his students and the VMA community have been “standing up and making a change” for some time now.  They’ve been doing it by enabling the students to hone their gifts to a level of mastery normally associated with entertainers who are significantly older.  And in the process creating a community with a shared love of excellence, and a deep respect for each other.

Here’s hoping that today’s exceptional display of talent and teamwork is tomorrow’s new normal.  This world has too many challenges for society to be underestimating its teenagers. Burbank High’s Pop Show 2018 is a reminder of what happens when a community takes young talent seriously.

Burbank High waited 110 years to host a CIF Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoff match.

The Bulldogs will have to wait at least one more year to win one.

Burbank fell in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs to visiting Warren High of Downey, losing 25-19, 31-33, 27-25, 25-19.

The two teams struggled, combining on 42 serving errors over four sets.

Burbank (19-11) lost the first set and found itself in trouble a number of times in the second set, before fighting back to win 33-31.

“Sets like those give your team a lot of momentum. We didn’t carry that into the third set as well as we wanted to,” Burbank outside hitter Jonathan Ragheb said. “We played well and then shot ourselves in the foot with those missed serves.”

Ragheb, who hopes to walk on the team at Harvard University, and teammate Rory Rickey, who hopes to walk on at UC San Diego, each finished with 14 kills.

“Most of us came in thinking let’s just play like it is another game. Obviously, everyone was a little excited that we were making history,” said Ragheb, who is Burbank’s valedictorian. “Everyone came in with confidence and a good mindset.”

Coach Karl Rojo acknowledged the match didn’t go as planned but was proud of his players.

“We accomplished a lot this season.  We had a winning record and were second in the league.  We played good volleyball from the beginning to the end,” Rojo said. “I think we didn’t serve as aggressive as we should have.  They were going in with a soft serve. I told them to serve aggressively from the start.  We just didn’t do a good job of executing that defense against that particular attacker. We picked it up here and there, but they kept attacking that spot.”

Rojo said he liked the position his team was in after the second set.

“I felt pretty good, but not relaxed or complacent. We had to keep applying the pressure,” Rojo said. “I expected the communication to be a little better and a little bit more disciplined in our defense because there were things that we have gone over multiple times in practice.”

The Bulldogs led 23-22 in the third set, only to see the lead evaporate as Warren won 27-25.

Burbank also got seven kills from Luca Bily and four from Ryan Rickey.

Warren (18-5) was led by Anthony Popoca and George Jimenez. Both had 14 kills each.

John Burroughs High School Drama presents Midsummer SoCal for three performances Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 11-13. Written by Ken Ludwig, the play re-tells Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream set at a current-day, Southern California beach.

The story revolves around the impending marriage of the Governor of California, the love affairs of four hormonal beach-bound high school crushes, a lively crew of fairies ready to party and the staff of the local beauty salon trying to put on a play run by Patti Quince and Stylist Nikki Bottom, explained Director Guy Myers.

Oberon, the King of the Fairies, and his sidekick, Puck, show up with a powerful love potion and comedy and mischief ensues.

“This update of Shakespeare’s classic has been so much fun to work on with the students,” commented Myers. “Ken Ludwig wrote this modern update in 2012 and then allowed us to change the setting and references for Southern California in 2018, and the students have had a blast improvising and trying out different lines at each rehearsal.”

“The farcical style of the show keeps us laughing constantly, and we are looking forward to seeing how the audience responds,” he added. “With musical direction by Andrew Orbison and choreography by Jennifer Stanley, this mini-musical beach party is guaranteed to be a memorable evening good for all ages with plenty of surprises!”

“It’s been so much fun working on this show! Everyone is ridiculously talented and the level of energy each cast member puts into their character is contagious,” said junior Claire Flynn who plays “spoiled, Beverly Hills brat” Mia.

Senior KJ Powell plays Oberon, “King of The Surfer Fairies, respected by everyone on the beach.”

“He’s stylish and carries a lot of swag and loves to get what he wants,” explained Powell. “If a situation doesn’t go his way, he’ll use his charm and right hand man, Puck, to get his way by intimidating his apprentice. He knows what he wants and gets it when he wants it but don’t let him intimidate you because under it all he is as breezy as the ocean.”

Sophomore Eli Staub portrays Puck, “a mischievous fairy who messes up, causing all the wrong things to happen and messing up the plot. It’s a very fun role to play, because as well as acting, there is singing and dancing involved.”

Lyle, one of the misaligned lovers, is played by junior Paris Stacy.

“He’s in love with this girl Mia, but her parents don’t want Lyle to marry her so that have to run to Canada to try and have the wedding,” explained Stacy. “Things get a little complicated once the fairy Puck tricks me into falling in love with Helene, Mia’s best friend.”

“The character is really silly, so I love it,” Stacy added. “He can be really exaggerated, cocky or emotional out of nowhere and it’s just fun to play such a varied character. The play itself is so absurd that it just ends up being a lot of fun to act and that really comes through in everyone’s performance.”

Midsummer SoCal is such a fun show and is full of energy!” said junior Veronica Haug. “My character, Nikki Bottom, is an obnoxious beautician who absolutely loves being the center of attention and will do pretty much anything to do just that. The whole show is super funny and has so many great scenes!”

JBHS Drama’s Midsummer SoCal runs May 11 and 12 at 7:00 p.m. and May 13 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $15 for adults. They can be purchased in advance through jbhsdrama.com or bought at the door.

Burroughs Baseball Earns 5-2 Win Over Burbank

There is an outside chance that the Burroughs High baseball team will participate in the upcoming CIF Southern Section playoffs after beating city rival Burbank 5-2 in a Pacific League contest at Tomahawk Field on Tuesday night.

With the stands filled to near capacity, the Indians scored a run in the first inning and four runs in the second.

“We’re playing for a playoff spot. We have to win to get in and we have to win on Friday or we’re out,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said.

That was all the scoring Burroughs (13-14 and 7-6 in league) would need as junior Nicco Chuidian went five innings, striking out two with three hits allowed.

“I thought Nicco did a great job to start the game,” Sherwood said. “He showed not only on the mound, but also at the plate what an elite player he is.”

Chuidian was mighty handy with the bat, collecting two hits and added a run batted in.

The Bulldogs (7-13 and 5-8 in league), who are out of the playoff hunt, scored two runs in the third inning as senior Abiezer Delgado’s base hit drove in both runs.

“Obviously you want to win games. That’s what we’re here to do, but at the same time you want to develop young men that you can be proud of,” Burbank coach Bob Hart said. “In that regard, I couldn’t be happier. They’re a great group of guys.”

Hart then added: “They’ve matured. They conduct themselves at a pretty high level,” he said. “They’re all good in the classroom. Most of them are going to college. You want to win games, but you want to develop young men. Ultimately that’s probably as big a goal for me as trophy hunting.”

Junior Matthew Porras went two and two-third innings with a strikeout, while junior Daniel Ruiz ventured three and one-third innings.

The Bulldogs, who were limited to three hits, will host the Indians on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

Chuidian cruised through the fourth inning when he retired freshman Ryan King and Ruiz on fly outs to right field and senior Max Meltzer on a pop up to third base.

Ruiz faced four batters in the bottom of the frame as junior Julian Jaramillo (two RBIs) and senior Matthew Diaz grounded out to shortstop.

Junior Collin Johnson, who walked three times, was aboard on a base on balls, but junior Andres Salazar flied out to center field.

The fifth inning began with Chuidian inducing senior Matt Moreno to fly out to left field while sophomore Oakley Spens grounded out to shortstop.

Junior Davis Mieliwocki then grounded out to sophomore shortstop Brian Garcia (two hits), who made a terrific stop and then gunned the ball to first base for the final out.

“It’s what we live for. I woke up thinking, Burbank game. We’re all ready for this,” Garcia said.

Garcia spoke about the two hits. “I’m really just looking for that one pitch,” he said. “Nothing high. Nothing low. You have to take advantage of it.”

Garcia said that he knows how important these games are. “We have to have the same mentality and the same approach,” he pointed out of Friday’s match. “Who ever wants it more will come out on top.”

Ruiz faced three batters in the fifth as senior Nathan Palafox lined out to center field.

Senior Revin Diego walked and senior Andrew Jacob Barrera lined out to left field, but Diego was caught stealing for the third out.

Senior Joe Metcalf was on the mound to begin the sixth for the Indians and walked junior Andrew De La Torre and Delgado.

In stepped junior Xavier Dubon in place of Metcalf and he fanned Porras for the first out.

“I think the relief job by Xavier, who came in with runners on first and second and nobody out with a three run lead and they didn’t score a run off him was one of the best relief jobs in years,” Sherwood said of his submarine specialist.

Dubon then induced King to reach on a force out, and fanned Ruiz for the last out.

“I was staying calm. Focus on just throwing strikes. Keeping it low. Get ground balls. I wasn’t trying to do anything special,” Dubon said of his outing. “I think it’s just the normal game. Come out here and just focus on you. Visualize it in your head and just do it. Believe in yourself.”

Six batters trotted to the plate in the home half of the sixth with senior Brandon Giraldo and Diaz reaching base on singles.

Salazar worked the final inning for the Indians and went 1-2-3 after Meltzer flied out to left field, Moreno grounded out to second base and Spens flied out to right field in foul territory.
