The Hollywood Charity Horse Show is raising money for 16 charities. Therefore, you are volunteering for a good cause that is also fun. If this sounds like something you want to do, then email them at volunteershchs@yahoo.com for more information.

Burroughs High freshman Kobi Wynne has clearly gotten better as the track season has gone on.

Thursday she got a little help from Mother Nature at Memorial Field.

Wynne ran the 100 meters in a hand-timed 12.19 seconds. She said her previous best was 12.70

“The wind was definitely a big factor,” Wynne said. “It definitely pushed me forward.”

Burroughs lost the girls’ varsity competition 82-53 and the boys’ varsity competition 97-32.

Wynne also won the 200 for the Indians, finishing in 26.28. The mark was the eighth best in school history.

Kayla Wrobel won the high jump going 4 feet, 10 inches.

Alex Akobian won the pole vault by clearing 10 feet.

For the boys’ team, Azad Arnaud won the 400 (54.75).

Ryan Thomas won the triple jump (41-8). The mark was the fifth best in school history.

Sarkis Tatarian won the shot put (44-7).

Burroughs competed without a number of key athletes who are preparing for next week’s showdown with Burbank. Some did compete but were clearly not concerned with producing personal bests.

The season will then continue with Pacific League preliminaries and then league finals for those who qualify.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Kindergarten, Burbank Style !

Back in my day I remember starting Kindergarten at Miller Elementary School in the HUGE log bungalow that most schools here had at least one.

I felt important. But that apparently was the design the school district had in mind.

A recent find given to us, details all that the district information for parents to help their children to have a successful Kindergarten learning experience with parents help. The cover shows a Burbank Teacher shaking hands with a young man before entering the door to class.

I remember being less than enthused at the proposition of Mom leaving me there! Then terror gripped my heart and that was all she wrote for my day was pure torture. Meeting other kids did not help much as they seemed to mirror my feelings exactly.

Frightened, we waited in fear for the teacher to speak, this seemed to be a long silent wait. Then she assured us little prisoners that we would have fun. Slowly we began to be more comfortable in our new environment and with our new found “friends”.

All this was due to our teacher following the “Playbook” given to our parents to assure them we were in good hands. Full of pictures this hand out brought back good memories of those days and some where I struggled, but over all this was a fun blast to the past.

Check it out below and try to picture your parents reading this and hopefully it will bring you back some good memories of “your” Kindergarten days in Burbank!

Burroughs Softball Gets Past Host Burbank 1-0

A genuine duel broke out as senior Presley Miraglia and junior Alyssa Porras matched skills in the pitcher’s circle in a Pacific League match on Thursday.

Inning after inning, neither allowed a run until the fourth when an unearned tally crossed the plate, but that was enough for Miraglia as Burroughs High edged Burbank 1-0 on a windy night at McCambridge Park.

“This type of game, it’s basically going to be, whoever is going to make the first major error to get that run across,” Burroughs coach Wes Tanigawa said of the tight battle. “That’s what it’s going to come down to.”

Presley Miraglia went seven innings, allowed four hits with 13 strikeouts as the Indians won 1-0 over host Burbank. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

That fateful frame began when Porras retired senior Hannah Talavera on a fly to left field.

Junior Mia Storer singled to center field and sophomore Chloe Bookmyer flied to left.

Miraglia, who was making her second start of the season after getting her grade-point average in order, singled up the middle as Storer took second base.

Senior Jessica Amaya reached on an error as Storer took third and scored to make it 1-0.

Porras then induced junior Megan Williams to fly out to right field that ended the inning.

Miraglia was sharp, allowing four hits across seven innings, striking out 13 and issuing no walks.

“Errors happen. I didn’t think we had a problem fielding,” said Miraglia of the bottom half of the initial inning.

Burbank hurler Alyssa Porras gave up one unearned run in the fourth inning to Burroughs. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Miraglia was on the money with her pitches and felt confident.

“I felt a lot stronger today,” she said. “I was working on my spin. I was always taught to put my changeup later. I like to go to my changeup later in the game.”

Porras also went seven frames, fanning three and yielding seven hits with no walks.

“We’re usually a pretty solid defensive team,” Burbank coach Mike Delaney said of the fourth inning. “You have to rebound. It’s part of the game. I’ll take our infield against anybody.”

Delaney then added: “A lot of our scoring opportunities came with two out,” he said. “When you get to two outs, it takes away a lot of your offense. We worked hard to pass the bat through our lineup. Presley pitched a good game, but we chased.”

Miraglia retired the side 1-2-3 in the third, fourth and sixth innings and struck out 10 after five frames.

The game began with Talavera reaching base on a wind-assisted infield single as the popup wasn’t fielded.

Burbank’s Sarah Garelick, who singled in the fifth and stole second, tries to lay down a bunt. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Storer then lined out to right field and Bookmyer bounced into an inning-ending double play.

The Bulldogs (8-7 and 4-2 in league) sent five to the plate in the first as junior Amaya Broyls singled to left field with one out.

Junior Sarah Garelick laid down a sacrifice bunt as Broyls went to second and then third base after senior Anysia Gonzalez was safe on an error.

Miraglia, who has shown no rust after missing the early portion of the schedule, has 21 strikeouts in 14 innings, struck out senior Macie Jensen to end the threat.

Porras set down the Indians (6-3-1 and 5-1 in league) in order in the second as Miraglia grounded out and Amaya fanned looking while Williams grounded out.

Miraglia struck out senior Erin Lashkari and senior Bene Snyder to begin the second inning.

Junior Desi Gomez then reached an a wind-helped infield pop, but the frame concluded when sophomore Katie Treadway struck out swinging.

Runs were hard to come by with Presley Miraglia and Alyssa Porras in the circle. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Porras was brilliant in the third as senior Nikki Riccardella popped up, junior Citlali Mendez grounded out and sophomore Memorie Munoz struck out.

Miraglia answered as she set down the Bulldogs in order, fanning junior Alex Davis, then getting Broyls and Garelick on infield popups.

It was more of the same in the fourth for Burbank as Gonzalez fanned, while Jensen flied out to right field and Lashkari popped up.

The Indians went down 1-2-3 in the fifth as Riccardella popped up, Mendez flied out to center field and Munoz grounded out.

The bottom of the fifth inning saw Miraglia strike out the side as Snyder went down looking, Gomez swinging and Davis swinging.

Treadway, the third batter in the frame, singled to left center and stole second base.

Six batters trotted to the plate in the sixth for the Indians with Talavera getting a leadoff single to right center. Storer was safe on an error and Bookmyer singled up the middle.

Porras retired Miraglia on a liner back to the box, Amaya reached on a force out and Williams lined out to left field.

The Bulldogs did nothing against Miraglia in the sixth as Broyls grounded out, Garelick lined out to right field and Gonzalez struck out swinging.

Pinch hitter, junior Kaitlin Escamilla, singled to right field for the Indians in the seventh, but sophomore Isabella Kam, a pinch hitter, struck out.

Munoz fouled out to the catcher, Talavera singled up the middle for her third hit, but Storer grounded out.

Miraglia faced four hitters in the seventh as Jansen fanned looking, Lashkari then singled to right center.

Pinch hitter, senior Allie Benson, struck out swinging and Gomez flied out to right field in foul territory for the final out.

Letter To The Editor: Save Magnolia Park!

Letter to the Editor:

City of Burbank government officials and Burbank residents, we are now in danger of losing a local treasure – Magnolia Park.

The charm and success of Magnolia Boulevard in Magnolia Park is due to the local “Mom and Pop” shops that form the Magnolia Boulevard Merchants Association. Since 2012, they’ve worked hard to make Magnolia Park a destination to shop, eat, and play. They created a neighborhood marketing campaign and hold events like “Ladies and Gents Night Out” and “Holiday in the Park” – all paid for from their own profits.

However, when you speak with the owners of these locally owned shops you’ll learn that over the next year or two we will face a mass exodus. It’s already started –for instance, we’ve just lost Creature Features. Why? The landlords see this success and are now astronomically raising rents – sometimes in the thousands a month – and these independent shops can’t afford such an increase.

These are the same landlords who voted to disband their own Magnolia Park Partnership in 2011 just to stop paying an up to $0.17 cents per square foot fee toward marketing and events. They now want to reap the fruits of others labor.

Don’t these landlords know they are killing the goose that laid the golden egg?  Is there something we can do, either legislative or just as a community, to help keep these shops from having to move and stop Magnolia Boulevard going the way of Melrose Avenue?

On Tuesday, April 17 at 7:10 a.m., a Burbank Police Parking Control officer was investigating a violation and discovered a dead body inside of a parked vehicle on the 1300 block of S. Varney St.

1300 Blk of Varney. ( Photo by Ross A Benson)

After paramedics arrived at the scene, a total of three bodies were found inside the car, all pronounced dead. The deceased are said to be adults, and one is a

man.

“At this time, the investigation is being treated as a homicide. Detectives and Forensic Examiners are on-scene and are awaiting the arrival of the Los Angeles County Coroner/Medical Examiner,” said Sgt. Derek Green.

“The Burbank Police Department is aware of information circulating online regarding missing individuals from the Bakersfield area. At this time, identifications of the deceased have not been made.”

The parked vehicle is believed to be a red Jeep with Tennessee license plates. It is unclear how long the car had been parked where it was found.

Investigators have speculated that the victims were killed at a separate location and they might have been “dumped” on S. Varney St. If this is the case, the Burbank Police Department is likely to face a jurisdictional issue as agencies will become involved in the investigation.

Police are currently looking into surveillance cameras throughout the area for footage that might shed light on what happened.

Burroughs Baseball Plays Arcadia Tough, Lose 8-4

Even before the Burroughs High baseball team faced Arcadia on Tuesday, they knew a difficult task was at hand.

The Apaches are the No. 1-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division III and are ranked No. 7 in the state and No. 61st nationally according to the website maxpreps.com.

After falling behind by three runs, the Indians rallied and evened it in the fifth inning, but didn’t have enough over the final two stanzas and were defeated 8-4 in a Pacific League game at Tomahawk Field.

“The kids want to do well,” Burroughs coach Craig Sherwood said. “It’s not like we did anything wrong, but they [Arcadia] did a lot of things right.”

Senior Nathan Palafox is one of the leaders for the Indians, who fell to Arcadia, 8-4. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Sherwood said that perhaps the players may be trying too hard.

“Can you put yourself in a relaxed atmosphere mentally and rely upon the coaching and your talent to execute? If you get caught up in the moment, you’re not likely to succeed usually,” he noted. “You have to play the game at your pace. At your intensity. Your ability to succeed.”

Burroughs (10-10 and 4-3 in league) sliced Arcadia’s lead to 3-1 with a run in the fourth as senior Andrew Jacob Barrera clubbed a double off the fence in left field that scored junior Jesse Rodriguez, who reached on a force out.

In the bottom of the fifth, senior Matthew Diaz led off and was safe on an error. After senior Nathan Palafox popped up to first base, junior Collin Johnson found a pitch he liked off senior Caden Ross and drove it over the fence in right field for a two-run homer that evened it at 3-3.

“Coach put me down in the lineup so I could see more fastballs,” said Johnson, the designated hitter, who batted in the No. 9 hole. “I’ve been told that their pitching’s pretty good. My approach to every at-bat is to take a good at-bat and help my team to the best of my ability. Get on base. Get a walk. Get a hit. Maybe move a runner over.”

Johnson went on: “I kind of describe it as like emotional in a sense,” he pointed out. “Today was good. We fought. If we have that fight in us the whole game, we’ll fight the whole game. When I hit that home run, it was electric in the dugout.”

Junior hurler Julian Jaramillo pitched well despite being on the losing end. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

Ross took the win after working five-plus innings, yielding four hits with three strikeouts and one hit batter.

Junior Jacob Morales went two innings, striking out one with one hit allowed for the Apaches.

The Indians scored once more in the sixth inning when junior Julian Jaramillo led off with a single up the middle.

Rodriguez followed with a single to center field that moved Jaramillo to third base and Barrera’s sacrifice fly reduced Arcadia’s advantage to 7-4.

The Apaches (17-0 and 7-0 in league) jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning off Jaramillo when sophomore Dustin Allen was safe on a force out.

Two batters later, senior Tyus Santa Anna grounded out to shortstop as Allen scored.

Jaramillo pitched well in his initial start on the mound. Jaramillo ventured five-plus innings, surrendering four hits with two walks and two hit batters.

“Before the game I was trying to stay within myself, focus, pound the zone,” said Jaramillo, who singled twice. “As the game was going on, I was feeling more confident. In the first inning I was a little nervous, but I was ready.”

The Indians’ defense committed two errors against the Apaches. Photo By: Edward Tovmassian

In the fourth inning, Arcadia’s lead became 3-0 as six batters came to the plate.

The only hit was a two-run single to right field by senior Chase Pedersen, who brought in junior Dominick Tello, who reached on an error and senior Tim Van kirk, who walked.

Arcadia put the contest out of reach with a four-run sixth inning as eight trotted to the dish.

Tello’s run-scoring double to left center drove in senior Arturo Felix, who came in as a pinch runner for Santa Anna, who walked.

Van Kirk’s single down the right field line plated Tello. Pedersen’s double to right center brought in Van Kirk and junior Jacob Lopez’s base hit to left field scored Pedersen.

Junior Xavier Dubon toiled two-thirds of an inning and surrendered three hits for the Indians, junior Nathan Metz worked one-third of an inning and gave up one hit and senior Joe Metcalf went one inning.

The Burbank Parent Education Program held its annual Spring Gala on Saturday, April 14. Founder and honored guest Helen Von Seggern was in attendance along with approximately 250 Burbankers to support the long-running parent and child education program.

“We are a non-profit organization,” explained Board President and Gala Chair, Troy Titus-Barrow. “The parent education council raises funds various organizational expenses which have included: carpeting, classroom supplies, yard toys, playground structures, sand boxes, changing tables in bathrooms, childcare for events, scholarships and our Preschool Press!”

“Burbank Parent Ed program is considered one of the best of its type,” commented Titus-Barrow. “It has been integral to fostering a community of friends and support for so many parents and children.”

“We welcome anyone to attend this event as it is truly a community effort,” she said about the annual gala. “Local businessed donate gift cards and products; we in turn then create fabulous baskets with these donations, that are then raffled.”

Titus-Barrow and gala co-chair Caroline Bèliveau planned the 2018 gala and invited current students, friends, family and alumni to attend.

“The alumni are among the first to purchase tickets for our event, which deeply reflects the impact, love and gratitude, that people feel towards the program years after graduating from it!” she added.

School District / Teacher Contracts Talk Heating Up

The glare of the white signs could be seen from a block away, the commotion bubbling on an otherwise unassuming intersection. Dozens of Burbank teachers formed outside the offices of the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD) last Friday on the corner of Olive Avenue and Parish Place. Their demands were loudly displayed on signs that read “Respect Burbank Teachers” and “Fair Settlement Now!”. Several cars honked their approval towards the swelling crowd of Burbank educators.

The Burbank Teacher’s Association (BTA) is in the midst of negotiations with the BUSD and have made several efforts to make their case for an increase in wages. In addition to the late afternoon visit on Friday there has been a lunch lockout and other rallying efforts including fundraisers at local businesses.

For many teachers a raise in wages is needed to reflect the ever-growing cost of living in California as well as the evolving needs of students. Several educators offer free time before and after class to help support extra-curricular activities for students.

A visit on the Facebook page of the BTA compares their wages to that of other educators in southern California districts in an effort to call for collective solidarity.

Teachers protest at Muir Middle School recently

About an hour into their spirited rally came the the news that the BUSD had submitted an offer of a  1% increase (the BTA was asking for 8%).

According to Superintendent Matt Hill, this offer was arrived at by “analyzing how the State’s budget impacts the district’s budget. We determine our offer by including the percentage increase into our three-year budget. The proposal promises a 1% on-schedule salary increase retroactive to July 1, 2017 and a 1% off-schedule salary payment for the 2017-2018 school year.”

The 1% offer represents progress for the teachers, who felt that the BUSD had been engaging in delay tactics. However, Superintendent Hill says negotiations tend to take place in March and lasts through May and June.

This proposal will be funded by ceasing contributions to the Retiree Health Benefit trust.

Superintendent Hill also mentions the possibility of an extra off-schedule salary payment that will go into effect pending the passing of a parcel tax up in November of this year.

Satisfied with the promise of dialogue, the majority of the attendees had left several minutes before the rally was scheduled to end, their objective accomplished at the moment.

The BTA has until April 20 to either accept the offer or submit a counter proposal.

Editors Note: There will be a Public Hearing (Approx. 7.30 p.m.) of the District’s 2018-2019 Initial Bargaining Proposal to the Burbank Teachers Association tonight at the School Board Meeting held at City Hall’s Council Chambers

Burbank Mayor Will Rogers Loses Battle to Cancer

It was reported today by city officials that Burbank Mayor Will Rogers has lost his battle with cancer.  He was 60 years-old.

Mayor Will Rogers during his State of The City Presentation. ( Photo by Ross A Benson)

He was appointed Mayor of Burbank on May 1, 2017, and was scheduled to step down in just 11 days when a new Mayor is appointed by Council vote.  After announcing his condition in September 2017, Rogers continued with his council responsibilities, including attending special events, ribbon cuttings and continued chairing council meetings, as recently as April 12.

Rogers was elected to the Council in 2015 and according to a city release, “Mayor Rogers will be remembered for his quick wit, unrelenting honesty, positive attitude, unpretentious demeanor and unyielding love for the City of Burbank. As Mayor, his highest priority was transparency and sharing information with the public. He was always willing to listen even if he disagreed.”

The release goes on to say, “Although born in Wisconsin, Will was raised primarily in and around Bloomington, Minnesota, a place he refers to as the “Burbank of Minnesota.” Will’s family moved extensively when he was young, leading to sojourns in many spots including Burlington, Vermont, Pismo Beach, California, Chicago, Illinois, and Merritt Island, Florida.

Will performed in his first commercial at the age of 15, and shortly thereafter began his “backup career” as a freelance writer, specializing in investigative journalism. As a young adult, Will attended the Goodman School, a renowned college for actors in Chicago, and later Normandale College in Bloomington where he won national awards with the speech and forensics team.

Will arrived in the Los Angeles area in 1979, where he continued dual roles as an actor and writer landing roles in TV and film while his by-line appeared in a variety of publications from LA Weekly to Germany’s “Der Spiegel” magazine.

In 1990, Will began writing for the local paper and was soon writing at least four feature columns per week. Will’s work has appeared in virtually every newspaper in the “Times Community Newspapers” group, from Pasadena to the South Bay, to Burbank, winning more than 20 first-place awards from the California Newspaper Publisher’s Association, the Greater Los Angeles Press Club and others, including “Columnist of the Year.”

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

Much of Will’s press work has been investigative in nature, but he’s also written “observational humor” pieces about his wife and children, often touching on his DIY home remodeling projects.”

Vice-Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy will assume the role as mayor for the next 11 days until the Council Reorganization meeting on May 1.

Burbank has a long storied History with Aviation. It began with Lockheed moving here to build its aircraft in the old Empire China Factory.

Lockheed became an Aviation Giant.

Early on a Cemetery was built with a large shrine erected called the “Portal of the Folded Wings” where aviators can be laid to rest. It is also home to the Burbank Aviation Museum which is open the first Sunday of every month from 1 to 3 pm.

They have displays of some wonderful Lockheed memorabilia and can tell you about the famous Aviators buried there. The shrine is a beautiful domed structure.

The grounds around it are wonderful and do great honor to men and women buried there. If you have not ever stopped by you should see this hidden gem of Burbank History. You will not be sorry.

The portal is open during normal Valhalla cemetery business hours but see above for the museum hours.

Burbank Softball Loses 15-10 Slugfest To Arcadia

When it comes to hitting, pitching and defense, the Burbank High softball team excelled in one when it met Arcadia on Thursday afternoon at McCambridge Park in a Pacific League match.

The Apaches were slightly better in three and as a result walked away with a 15-10 decision.

“We didn’t have it defensively or pitching-wise today,” Burbank coach Mike Delaney said. “Both of our pitchers struggled today hitting their spots and our defense wasn’t there to pick them up.”

Delaney went on: “Neither one happened today,” he said. “We were flat-footed today.”

The Bulldogs, who were coming off an 11-0 victory over host Glendale two days earlier, managed 13 hits.

Leading the charge was junior Desi Gomez, who accounted for three hits that included two triples and a single.

Senior Anysia Gonzalez had a triple and a single and sophomore Katie Treadway finished with a triple and a single.

Senior Macie Jensen added a double and a single and senior Bene Snyder smashed a double and a single.

Delaney said that mental mistakes really hurt. “I think we probably gave them six or seven runs today,” Delaney noted. “I told them that if we score 10 runs, we should win the game. I didn’t think we were prepared.”

Arcadia (7-8 and 4-4 in league) scored in five of the seven innings and collected 16 hits while Burbank (9-8 and 5-3 in league) also scored runs in five innings.

The Apaches scored three runs off senior pitcher Allie Benson in the first as senior Susan Harrison (four hits) belted a one-out, bases-clearing triple to left center.

Benson, who toured three innings, yielding six hits, striking out one and hitting one batter, escaped any further damage by getting junior Karly Gillis, who singled in the seventh, to hit into a double play.

The Bulldogs cut the edge to 3-1 as Gonzalez tripled in junior Sarah Garelick, who was safe on a fielder’s choice in the first inning.

When junior Alex Davis lined a ball delivered by freshman Sophia Garzona over the left field fence for a two-run homer, it was knotted at 3-3.

Garzona toiled seven innings, hit a batter and fanned a batter and allowed seven extra-base hits.

Arcadia, which banged out 16 hits including four extra-base hits, made it 6-3 in the second inning when junior Megan Lau (three hits) delivered a run-scoring infield single.

Freshman Averi Wong (two triples) tossed in a smash back to Benson that scored a run and the other run scored via an error.

Burbank shaved Arcadia’s lead to 6-5 with two runs in the second as Gomez’s triple to right center drove in Treadway, who led off with a three-base hit to right center.

It became a one-run affair on Jensen’s one-out, base hit to left field that brought home Gomez.

Arcadia’s lead became 9-5 with a three-run fourth off junior Alyssa Porras, who worked four innings, allowing 10 hits with two hit batters, a walk and a strikeout, as Wong clubbed a two-run triple to center field and senior Nicole Puente added a sacrifice fly.

With a four-run fifth, Arcadia’s advantage swelled to 13-5 as junior Dejah Westbrook (four hits) knocked in a run with a single.

Wong’s triple brought in a pair of runs and Harrison’s single to center field added a run.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the fifth inning that made it 13-6 as Gonzalez, who singled up the middle with two out, eventually crossed the plate on an error.

Arcadia’s final two runs came in the sixth as seven came to bat with only Lau getting a single.

The inning was prolonged by two Burbank errors as the Bulldogs finished with four miscues compared to three for the Apaches.

Burbank shaved the lead to 15-7 with a tally in the sixth inning as Jensen’s double to left field scored a run.

Burbank tacked on three runs in the seventh inning as Gomez tripled to right center for two runs and Gomez came around on an error.

Senior Erin Lashkari also had a base hit for the Bulldogs that came with two out in the seventh inning.

Family Service Agency Carewalk Honoree Shows A Great Diel of Compassion

As the old Chinese saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” In July of 1953, when three local educators fought to find the funding to launch Family Service Agency of Burbank, they could never have foreseen how far those first steps would take the tiny organization, at that time operating out of Assistance League offices in Hollywood.

But 65 years later, their dream of mental health care being recognized as “a community service for all” is a success story worthy of celebration and support.

This weekend, when FSA hosts their 11th Annual CAREWALK, the Burbank community will come together to help the agency take the next steps toward continuing and expanding their valuable work in Burbank

Janet Diel (Photo Courtesy Suzanne Weerts)

The 2018 CAREWALK will honor the commitment of one of Burbank’s most dedicated volunteers, Janet Diel. A strong believer in the value of community service,

Diel has been involved in the Burbank for 39 years. Not only does she talk the talk of kindness and the importance of giving to others, she walks the walk. Because Diel has struggled with health challenges for much of her adult life, she often walks that walk of service to others with a cane, and when need be, she rolls it in her wheelchair.

As the former oncology nurse says, “Disabilities make life more complicated, but not impossible.” And she expects more of herself not less. “I identify myself by what I can do, not what I can’t,” she explains. And in Burbank, Janet Diel has found a way to do a great deal.

“Janet is relentless, passionate, and tireless about a number of causes, all of which help folks who are less fortunate that she. Her enthusiasm is contagious and I catch it several times each year,” says Tim Murphy, who served on Burbank’s City Council from 1989-1993.

Diel considers herself a Burbank newcomer, having only lived in the city for four decades. In that time, she has built an extensive resume of service. She has been the cookie chair for 41 Burbank Girl Scout troops, she chaired both GATE and Special Education parent support groups, spearheaded the disabled-friendly playground at Bret Harte Elementary, and served on various Boards including Job’s Daughters and the Burbank Human Relations Council.

She has dedicated decades to service with the Burbank Transportation Commission, the local Optimist Club, Burbank’s Tournament of Roses Committee, Relay for Life and BUSD’s School Facilities Oversight Committee. She may be best known for her thirty-two years with the Burbank Coordinating Council where she has overseen Camperships and Holiday Baskets impacting countless children and families through her decades of tireless service.

Diel’s community service has been recognized with numerous awards including last month when State Assemblywoman Laura Friedman named her District 43’s 2018 Woman of the Year. In 2016 she was among Congressman Adam Schiff’s 2016 Women of The Year and in 2010 Burbank Council PTA awarded her the Golden Oak.

Retired City Manager Mary Alvord has nothing but appreciation for Diel.

“I have known and worked with her for most of my 38 year career with the City of Burbank and continue to witness her incredible commitment and devotion to the Burbank community,” said Alvord.

“I first worked with Janet on issues related to access for disabled individuals and she has been an amazing advocate and leader for the rights of disabled individuals. Janet has helped make the Burbank community much more user-friendly for persons with disabilities in addition to countless other kind and loving acts of generosity in our city.”

Diel and her family are proponents of FSA’s services, having used them themselves.

“When my grandson was eight, he had a ‘safe person’. He knew he could ‘save some of his mad and some of his sad’ and share it with his counselor at FSA,” said Diel, “Laurie and her team made it possible for this young man to bravely stand up at a City Council meeting and share his experience, in the hopes that other children may be encouraged to talk to counselors when needed as well.”

For three decades, Diel has been a member of Burbank Coordinating Council, overseeing the Holiday Basket program and ensuring that hundreds of families in need receive food and gifts over the holidays. And in the summer, many children in those families get to go camping as well thanks to the Coordinating Council’s annual Campership program.

When preparing the list of children who could benefit from a summer camp experience, Diel reaches out to FSA to ensure that no child in need is left out. She and FSA’s office administrator, Pat Smola, compare lists of children to identify those in need of such an opportunity.

“Camp is good for the mental health of so many of these children,” says Diel, “It can be a salvation for kids who’ve dealt with abuse or neglect in their homes or children who are struggling with stress and anxiety but whose families can’t afford to give them the life-changing experiences that summer camp can provide.”

Diel has ensured that between 100-150 young people get to experience local day camps and overnight camps annually, having inherited the role from her dear friend Barbara Sykes, a community leader who passed away in 2016.

“Barbara was an inspiration for so much of what I do,” said Diel. “While the CAREWALK may be in honor of me, I’ll be walking in memory of her.”

“FSA is proud to shine a light on Janet Diel’s extensive community involvement at CAREWALK 2018,” said Laurie Bleick, Executive Director of Family Service Agency, “Janet has given countless hours of her time to further our work and is a great example of how one person can rise above her own challenges and make a difference in the lives of countless others.”

Diel’s family legacy is one of the noteworthy historical accomplishments. Her father worked with the National Science Foundation and was part of the team that helped develop the internet and her mother was a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning director who worked with Walt Disney in the creation of the Haunted House attraction at Disneyland.

Diel’s stepmother, Kitty, survived three concentration camps during the holocaust.

“My dad was a navigator on a bomber while the woman who would one day become his second wife was in a concentration camp,” Diel explains. “Kitty had been a prima ballerina and knew several languages which earned her the position of Interpreter in the camps.”

That role gave her an extra half potato ration. Once the camp was liberated, she walked 1000 miles to Czechoslovakia and eventually came to America where she met Diel’s father.

Her knowledge of Kitty’s horrific experiences led Diel to say yes when given the opportunity to coordinate the BUSD holocaust speakers program for 7th and 10th graders.

“I know in my heart that when kids hear authentic speakers share their personal stories, they will understand and never forget,” says Diel. She recognizes that there are few survivors left to tell their stories (quote about her stepmother) and this is the last chance for a generation to hear from living survivors.

Diel grew up knowing that life is full of trials. “We all come into this world with our own set of challenges, but at some point ,we have to stop looking at what is wrong and instead look at how we can help others.”

She says her parents and stepmother all experienced difficult childhoods and were damaged emotionally, but they still left indelible marks in the world. Understanding and appreciating those marks connects her more deeply with the work of FSA.

“Regardless of your challenges, you have the capacity and responsibility to do something valuable with your life,” says Diel. “If we can all share a little of our time and a little of ourselves, we can make a better world.”

Diel appreciates that the counselors at FSA are ready to assist anyone who needs a little extra help navigating life’s challenges so they can take the steps needed to create a valuable life. And this weekend she will be there when the community comes together to take steps for FSA at the CAREWALK.

South Hills Children’s Center Holds Ribbon Cutting

On the afternoon of Thursday, April 19, families and city officials gathered at the ribbon cutting ceremony of the South Hills Children’s Center located at 222 S. Victory Blvd.

Director Maria Martinez, who launched the daycare, was grateful for the large turnout in attendance. Burbank city councilman Bob Frutos and other city officials assisted Martinez as she cut the ribbon, officially opening the daycare to the public.

“It is a great resource for the community. Thank you for your efforts for opening this up and we hope for many successes for you,” said a city official, handing a certificate to Martinez.

The Children’s Center is intended for kids ages 2 to 5, who can attend sessions Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“My passion is to help others and this church has given me the opportunity to open this center as one of my big dreams because I can support the learning and development of each child in their own way,” said Martinez.

Crafts, painting, and a bounce house were provided at the ceremony to celebrate the daycare’s official launch.

South Hills pastor Dave Stewart was in attendance during the ribbon cutting ceremony, proud of Martinez for her accomplishment.

“It’s been a three-year dream so we’re excited it’s finally happening and about Maria’s vision coming to be. For us, it’s exciting to be able to provide something like this for our community,” said Stewart.

Parents are thankful to have a place where their kids can go, knowing they won’t get lost in the shuffle, and be treated according to their individual needs.

“I’ve really appreciated the level of attentiveness that comes with people of faith who have an underlying understanding of what it means to not just teach your kids, but to love them as well,” said Jessie Brewer, mom of Noah (7) and Sophia (4).

Among the parents who are excited about sending their children to a daycare they can trust is Jon Torres, who works within the church as the family pastor.

“They send out these weekly newsletters where they talk about what they do for the entire week to inform parents what’s going on. Not only that, but their Instagram page shows that the team behind the Children’s Center values excellence,” said Torres.

The team who works at the Children’s Center hopes to foster an atmosphere where families can feel safe and cared for. Teachers use a curriculum called “STEM,” which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.

“There’s also a lot of focus on developing and maturing their social skills, not just academically,” said Paola Bracamontes, one of the teachers.

A statement on the Children’s Center website at http://southhillschildrenscenter.com explains the philosophy behind their method of education: “We believe children are like little scientists and have a natural curiosity to explore their world. We create environments where optimal learning takes place.”

Celebration of Life to be Held Monday for Will Rogers

Mayor Rogers’ Celebration of Life will be on Monday, April 23 at 2:30 pm at The Castaway.

From Dignity Memorial:

Will Rogers born June 21,1957 in Neenah, WI. Raised primarily in Bloomington, MN. After graduating from the Goodman School of Drama, he moved to the Los Angeles area in 1979 where he continued dual roles as actor and writer. In 1990, Will began writing for the local paper and was soon writing at least four feature columns a week. His work has appeared in virtually every newspaper in the “Times Community Newspapers” group, winning more than 20 1st place awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Assoc., The Greater Los Angeles Press Club and others, including “Columnist of the Year.”

Will was elected to the Burbank City Council in 2015 running on a platform of transparency and community involvement. He was named Mayor by his colleagues in 2017. Will took his duties with the City of Burbank very seriously, though he brought a sense of humor to the meetings, building a strong sense of comradery.

Will was recently honored with the 2018 Burbank Top Award for Citizenship by the BTAC. This award exemplifies the very essence of Will Rogers – who spent his life fighting for the needs of others, whether through writing investigative columns, volunteering or his many personal acts of kindness. Will purchased many items he didn’t need at silent auctions and was happy to attend any function where he could be of service to someone.

Will Rogers was known for his dedication to the service of others, philanthropy, and clever writing skills, but family was his first priority. His family will miss his sharp wit, biting sarcasm and deep devotion. Will Rogers was a much beloved husband, daddy, brother, uncle and great uncle.

Will was proceeded in death by his mother, JoAnne Rogers, Father Kenneth Wege, brother Stephen Wege, niece Susan Heberle and much-loved dogs Lucy and Guinness. He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years Nancie, children Stephen (& Hailey) and Sarah.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to BTAC or Boys & Girls Club of East Valley and Burbank. A Celebration of Life will be Monday, April 23 beginning at 2:30 PM at The Castaway in Burbank, CA.

City Council to Take Up Open Seat April 24

Burbank’s City Council will have a tough Tuesday ahead.

Besides mourning for Will Rogers, who lost his battle to cancer last Thursday, the Council will take up naming a replacement.  Vice-Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy will now assume the duties of Mayor for the remainder of the term which expires May 1, at which time the Council will hold a special reorganization meeting where it will be fully expected for her to officially be voted in to take on the role of Mayor for the coming year.

According to a press release issued by the Public Information Office, “Under the City Charter, the Council has 30 days from the occurrence of the vacancy to fill the Council seat; and if it fails to do so, then the vacancy shall be filled by the Mayor with his or her selection.

As such, the City Council has until May 19, 2018, to fill the vacancy. If the Council fails to act by that day, then the Council Member appointed to serve as Mayor at the May 1, Council reorganization shall appoint the new City Councilmember. Whoever is appointed will serve out Mayor Rogers’ term that currently ends on May 1, 2019. According to the City Charter, the Vice Mayor shall act as the Mayor Pro Tempe through the May 1 reorganization.”

According to the release, the Charter or the Burbank Municipal Code provides specific details to appoint a new Council Member. In a report to the Council, staff says:

The Council needs to select an appointment procedure to fill this vacancy.  Neither the Charter nor the BMC prescribe any selection process. The Council may wish to consider using the appointment process employed in the past to fill vacant elected positions such as done for filling Mr. Kramer’s seat, as well as the City Clerk and City Treasurer in 2012.

If the City Council selects this method during the April 24 Council meeting, the City Clerk’s Office and PIO could start advertising the position immediately through the City’s web page, social media, press releases, newspaper ads and other appropriate methods.  Given the thirty-day requirement, staff recommends that applications be due by noon on Monday, May 7. A Special Council meeting to hold interviews can be scheduled for Thursday, May 10 with Council making an appointment that evening. If, however, the Council needs more time to appoint a candidate another Special Council Meeting can be called for May 17. Whether the appointment is made on May 10 or May 17, staff recommends that a formal swearing-in take place at the May 22 City Council meeting.

Staff is referring to Bob Kramer, who resigned from the Council in February 2002 so that he could take a position with the City.  The City Clerk and Treasurer both resigned in 2012 and were replaced using the formula from above for the unexpired terms that lasted for about a year.

The Burbank Municipal Code does say the following regarding open vacancies on the Council:

SECTION 900. VACANCIES.

(a) A vacancy in the office of Council Member from whatever cause shall be filled by appointment by the Council, such appointee to hold office until the next regularly scheduled municipal election; provided that if the Council fails to agree or for any other reason does not fill such vacancy within thirty (30) days after the same occurs, then such vacancy shall be filled by the Mayor. Should a vacancy occur after the opening of the filing period for election to the office of Council Member, or within thirty (30) days before the beginning of such filing period, then the appointee shall hold office until the regularly scheduled election next following the one for which the filing period is called. Should the appointment be for an unexpired term which has two or more years remaining when the next regularly scheduled election occurs, then the candidate elected who receives the lesser number of votes, shall be deemed elected to the remaining term for which the appointment was made.

(b) If the seats of a majority of the Council shall become vacant, then the City Clerk shall call a special election at once to fill the vacancies for the unexpired terms and the same shall be conducted substantially in the manner provided for General Municipal Elections, and the candidates receiving the greatest number of votes, equal to the number of vacancies, shall be deemed elected.

(c) A vacancy on the Council shall occur if any member of the Council shall fail to attend any regular meeting of the Council for sixty (60) consecutive days without the permission of the Council, or shall fail to qualify, or shall move their place of residence outside the City, or shall cease to be an elector of the City, or shall resign, or be convicted of a felony, or be adjudged mentally incompetent. (Previous Section 26; amended and renumbered by Charter Amendment approved by the voters on April 10, 2007.)

Since the opening comes with a year to go on the term, the City Council will be in charge of picking replacement.  If the opening had come with over two years remaining, Dr. David Gordon would have returned to the Council since he had come in third place in the last election.

If the Council as predicted decides to take applications, any Burbank registered voter who has resided in the City for at least 29 days will be eligible to apply.

Burbank, Burroughs Track Earn Split

The Burbank and Burroughs High track teams made sure coaches Darin Wolf and John Peebles got the send off they deserved Thursday when the two teams met at Memorial Field.

Burbank defeated Burroughs 87-48 to capture the Pacific League title on the boys’ side. Burroughs, minus stars Emily Virtue and Elizabeth Switzer, still had enough to hold off Burbank on the girls’ side, winning 72-61.

“This year is Mr. Wolf’s last year and I kept trying to remind everyone that this is a league title. We were focused on the drills and we wanted Mr. Wolf to go out with a blast, something he could remember for the rest of his life,” said Sergio Aguilar, who won three individual events.

Wolf, who will remain a math teacher at Burbank, is stepping down as the head track coach after 18 years.

Peebles, who has been with the program since the 1990s, will continue in his role as a math instructor at Burroughs, but plans to be just an assistant coach going forward. He led the Burroughs boys’ cross country team to the school’s only CIF Southern Section title in any sport in 2014.

Burroughs junior Lakely Nealis won the girls’ 800 in a personal best time of 2 minutes, 25.83 seconds in what was one of the most impressive marks of the meet.

“They (Virtue and Switzer) were two key people, so without them we felt it would be a little more challenging to beat Burbank and I’m actually surprised that we did,” Nealis said of the Burroughs team victory.

Among the most impressive marks for the Burbank boys’ team include sophomore Victor Goli winning the 1,600 (4:29.95) and finishing second in the 800 (2:01.26).

Aguilar won the 110 high hurdles (15.53), the 300 intermediate hurdles (40.95) and the long jump (19 feet, 8 inches).

Bryan David won the 400 (50.71).

Leading the Burroughs boys’ team was Jeron Straker, who took the 800 (2:00.80).  AZ Arnaud was also impressive in winning the 200 (22.9).

Burroughs girls’ team was led by freshman Kobi Wynne, who won the 100 (12.69) and the long jump (16-7). Alex Akobian won the pole vault (10-6), Elizabeth Surrat took the 400 (1:01.18) and 300 hurdles (49.71) and Jordan Guzman won the 3,200 (11:48.12).

The Burbank girls’ team was led by Shalom Mejia, who won the 1,600 (5:29.93).
