Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Is In Desperate Need of Blood

$

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a leading hospital in the field, and they are critically low on their blood, and platelets supply. Something they need desperately. Each month they use around 2,000 units of blood and blood components to save the lives of babies and children.

During the Summer months, they usually see a decrease in blood donors. This Summer they cannot afford to see that because they already critically low. They need 65 donors a day in order to replenish their supply. They need you.

CHLA is just 15 minutes from Burbank, and the whole process takes less than an hour. I know this because I donated yesterday. Here’s what happens: you park your car (they validate parking so it does not cost you anything), go to the donation center, fill out some paperwork and answer a questionnaire, get your blood pressure and iron levels checked and then they take your blood. When they are done, they give you some juice and you get to choose from some yummy snacks. Finally, you get to go home with the knowledge you helped to save a baby or a child’s life.

CHLA says that donors need to be at least 17 years of age with photo ID and you must weigh over 110 pounds. You also must also meet their required criteria for recent travelers. The CHLA Blood Donor Center is open Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment, you can call 323-361-2441, or book a time online at www.chladonateblood.org.

Did I mention, you are saving a child’s life? After I was done giving blood, they gave a me sticker to wear that reads, “Be nice to me, I donated blood today.” I am more proud of that one than the one that says, “I voted.” I sincerely felt really good about myself after I did it and you too can feel that same way. Please donate today or as soon you can, they are a bunch of children and their parents who will love you for doing it.

While Burbank Firefighters were attempting to shut off the water supply to this Fire Hydrant that was struck in the 900 Blk of Valley Street Friday afternoon.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

A couple of residences took advantage of the extra water that was flowing. One resident decided to walk into the spray and cool off as the temperatures exceeded 100 degrees, another resident grabbed a bucket and was scooping water and watering his plants and lawn, while a couple of Labrador dogs wondered what happened to their favorite hydrant.

The water flow was shut down within a few minutes, and the street resumed normal traffic flow.

Police Investigating Attempted Armed Robbery / Home Invasion

Burbank Police are investigating what could have been a robbery or possibly home invasion that occurred on the 3600 block of Viewcrest Drive in Burbank Saturday night at 10:25.

According to Sergeant Derek Green of the Burbank Police Department, three men approached a man in his 60’s in his garage, along with several friends. All three suspects were wearing masks and armed with guns.

There was a brief struggle between the suspects and victim, at which point all three suspects ran to a nearby vehicle, described as a dark, 4-door sedan.

Police on the scene that night reported that the suspects had an AK-15, a shotgun and a handgun. It was not reported what was said or demanded by the masked men or if there was any relationship between the suspects and victims.

Viewcrest Drive was also the scene where a brush fire threatened homes recently and residents were evacuated.  It was reported that two homes in the area were burglarized during the evacuations. Police have not said if there is any link between the two incidents and all are still being investigated.

There were no injuries reported at the scene.

Burbank Firefighters Kept Busy with Freeway Emergencies

$

The Burbank Fire Department is kept busy with two freeways running through town on regular basis.

Monday nite it was no different, they were called a couple of times with accidents, fires, and even a physical rescue.

A complete physical rescue was called at 9:50 pm with a reported car over the side of the embankment. The dispatch included 2 engine companies, a truck company with the ‘Jaws of Life’ a rescue ambulance and a Battalion Chief.

Upon their arrival Westbound 134 just east of Buena Vista they located a Mini Cooper over the side resting against a large tree. Firefighters had to secure the car from moving so they secured it with a safety strap and chain to a parked fire truck company on the freeway. Once they got it secured 2 Paramedics got inside to treat the driver, the remaining firefighters worked on cutting the roof off and spreading doors to get the patient out on a backboard.

Firefighters worked quickly as Paramedics treated the patient while making contact with the hospital, advising them what they were working on. Even thought the emergency was within 5000 feet of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center the Paramedics determined the injuries required them to transport to a Trauma Center and the closest was Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

California Highway Patrol was on scene to take a report and direct traffic around the emergency. They issued a SIGALERT for that part of the freeway while they investigated and allowed the firefighters safety.

The firefighters cleared away all their equipment while a tow truck was figuring a way to remove the car.

All the while Burbank Firefighters across town were working on another incident on the I-5 at Burbank.

Open since December 2016, Basecamp Coffee & Eatery on Riverside Drive has established itself as a go-to spot for breakfast, brunch and lunch in Burbank. Offering lots of healthy options for food and drink, along with some indulgences, the coffee shop and cafe does brisk business every day of the week.

Also on the same small property and operating as the restaurant’s kitchen is the High Horse Dinette. The same menu is available to order at both Basecamp Coffee & Eatery and High Horse Dinette. Most people tend to order at Basecamp counter and when ready, the food is brought by runners from the Dinette.

With an extensive beverage list including drip, cold brew, pour over and espresso coffees, juices and sodas, fresh cold pressed juices, kombucha, teas and shakes, Basecamp Coffee & Eatery is great for your drink fix throughout the day.

Open early at 7:00 a.m., Basecamp offers a huge breakfast menu of omelets, sandwiches, pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, quiche and more. Yes, you can get your poached egg here and avocado toast. There’s also a nice selection of fresh baked pastries from which to choose.

We’ve enjoyed Basecamp’s Breakfast Burrito, which offers a nice combination of scrambled eggs with green onion, cheddar cheese, choice of meat, pico de gallo and potatoes.

The Quinoa Eggs Benedict was a big hit, with two perfectly poached eggs perched on top of steamed spinach and quinoa patties and topped with avocado basil sauce.

Basecamp Coffee & Eatery also has a varied lunch menu. The decadent Morgan Burger with sauteed mushrooms and onion, bacon, avocado, organic greens, jack cheese and garlic aioli is delicious. Pair it with a healthy salad or fruit, or go for the cole slaw, shoestring fries or onion rings.

We also enjoyed the light Veggie Wrap. Filled with quinoa, hummus, organic greens, roasted red bell pepper, mozzarella, asparagus, tomato, avocado and a garlic aioli, the wrap was filling but not overly heavy.

Bathrooms are clean and the restaurant has an eclectic and fun decor. There are plenty of seats inside and out – lots of bar stool seating and a few tables inside and several picnic tables outside. Some parking is available on the property.

The Burbank Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying at least three suspects wanted for several thefts of cigarettes from Walgreens stores in the San Fernando Valley, including Burbank.

Since June 7, 2017, mostly in the early morning hours, the suspects pictured below have entered various 24-hour Walgreens locations in Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Arleta and Burbank. Once inside, the suspects have walked behind the cash registers and stolen large quantities of cigarettes. There have been eight reported incidents involving these same suspects with losses reaching into the thousands of dollars.

On June 22, 2017, at about 4:00 A.M., two of the suspects entered the 24-hour Walgreens located at 1028 South San Fernando Boulevard in the City of Burbank. The suspects approached a cashier and demanded that she “stay back” as they selected several packages of cigarettes from behind the counter, shoveling them into a pillow case. The suspects then left the store to a getaway vehicle driven by a third suspect. The car was described as a four door sedan, possibly gray in color.

On July 5, 2017, the Glendale Police Department arrested 42 year old Antonio La Clay for a series of fires occurring in the City of Glendale and the City of Burbank.

Antonio La Clay

Glendale detectives began investigating the fires in the south portion of Glendale beginning in March 2017. The small fires were mostly confined to stand alone garbage containers, dumpsters, and debris. As the investigation continued, new fires were set in northwest Glendale. A total of 15 arson cases were identified from March through July. The most significant fire occurred in Glendale on June 13th in the 1500 block of Gardena Avenue. A garbage container was set fire in the alley, causing an estimated $40,000.00 in damages to a commercial building.

Detectives began working with the Burbank Police Department after they experienced the same type of arsons in their city with ten reported cases.

Glendale detectives located surveillance footage which captured a male suspect at several of the fire scenes. The Burbank Police Department also located surveillance footage involving the same suspect.

1500 Block of Gardena Avenue, Glendale

A crime bulletin was generated and surveillance photos of the suspect were shared with the Glendale Fire Department, Burbank Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.

On July 5, 2017, a Glendale Firefighter recognized the suspect at Pelanconi Park while on-duty. Glendale officers responded and identified the male as Antonio La Clay, a homeless male with a last known address in Burbank. Antonio La Clay was identified as the male captured on surveillance and subsequently arrested.

On July 7th, the Glendale and Burbank cases were presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office and six felony counts of arson were filed. Antonio La Clay is being held on $100,000.00 bail in the Los Angeles Men’s County Jail.

Pick-Up Point For Ridesharing Companies To Relocate at Airport

$

On Tuesday, July 18, the pick-up location for ridesharing companies that operate at Hollywood Burbank Airport, such as Uber, Lyft, Wingz, and Opoli, will be relocated from the ground level of the Short Term Parking Structure to the ground transportation island closest to the Terminal B entrance. This new pick-up point will provide increased convenience for passengers who use ridesharing apps to travel from the Airport, while also alleviating traffic congestion in the Short Term Parking Structure. Rideshare drivers can continue to drop off passengers at the terminal curb.

“We’ll put personnel out there to help guide our passengers, answer questions and direct them to the new location,” said Hollywood Burbank Airport Executive Director Frank Miller. “There will be tremendous effort on our part, and our logistics are going to be dynamic.”

Other ground transportation operations will remain at the islands, although their pick-up and drop-off points will also change. Beginning July 18, door-to-door shuttles will pick up passengers at the island closest to the main terminal entrance. Airport parking shuttles will drop off and pick up passengers at the middle island across from the main terminal entrance.

Off-Airport parking shuttles, hotel shuttles and courtesy vehicles will drop off and pick up passengers at the middle island across from the entrance to Terminal B. There will be no change to the taxi pick-up location at the Airport.

A map (see below) and informational video for passengers is currently available on the Airport’s website, www.hollywoodburbankairport.com/ground-transportation, and the video will be posted on the Airport’s social media channels and on-site digital displays next week. The digital displays, courtesy of Metro Los Angeles as part of the I-5 traffic mitigation project, also provide train and bus schedules for passengers who wish to take public transit to and from the Airport.

In addition, Airport staff has delivered an informational packet, which includes maps and an instructional video, to the rideshare companies that operate at the Airport. The purpose of this information is to educate rideshare drivers about the new pick-up point prior to its implementation, as well as to emphasize Airport regulations for rideshare company pick-ups and drop-offs.

This map, which will be posted in the Airport’s baggage claim areas and on its digital displays, shows the new island locations for ground transportation options at Hollywood Burbank Airport. Additional relocation materials are available on the Airport website,

Deputy District Attorney Carolina Lugo said Cameron Reed Hansen, 31, was found guilty on March 8 of two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter and one count of injuring a girlfriend. The jury also found that Hansen was armed with a knife and caused great bodily injury.

On March 3, 2015, the defendant went to his ex-girlfriend’s home a day after they broke up and began attacking and biting her, according to court testimony. When her mother and her roommate came to the victim’s aid, Hansen stabbed both women multiple times, the prosecutor said.

The three victims survived the attack.

Burbank Firefighters were called to the intersection of Buena Vista and Olive Ave at 2:45 AM after the driver of a Honda Passport crashed head on into the street standard.

Burbank Paramedics worked on the male driver and found the passenger was trapped in the seat. They called for a Truck Company that has specialized tools that will cut away at the door.

The assignment required two rescue ambulances one to transport the driver to a local hospital and the passenger needed to go to a trauma center with additional injuries.

Burbank Police will determine what caused the accident and if alcohol was a factor. There were skid marks through the intersection leading to the final resting spot.

Wednesday of this week 85 campers and counselors from the Robert Gross Park Summer Daze program visited Hollywood Burbank Airport to learn about careers in aviation from Airport employees and tenants.

The campers, whose ages ranged from five to 12, heard presentations from employees of the TSA, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and concessionaire Up Pup ‘N’ Away, as well as staff from the Airport’s Public Relations, Operations, Police, and Fire Departments.

The presenters discussed and demonstrated their jobs for the campers and counselors, with interactive opportunities for the campers to pretend to be wing walkers, gate agents, and security screeners. The campers also had the opportunity to explore Police and Fire Department vehicles, try on protective firefighting gear, and get to know Kai and Delilah, the long-haired Dalmatians who accompanied the owner of Up Pup ‘N’ Away.

This year marked the tenth anniversary of the Summer Daze event at Hollywood Burbank Airport. The Airport has hosted campers from Robert Gross Park, which is located on a site previously owned by Lockheed, since 2007. After hosting older campers in 2015 and 2016, this year Elementary school-aged campers once again participated in the event.

Author Discusses Dynamic Take On Resurrection Of Woolly Mammoth

Woolly mammoths and the science to bring them back from extinction will be the focus of the Burbank Public Library’s upcoming author presentation. Ben Mezrich talks about his nonfiction book Woolly: The True Story of the Quest to Revive One of History’s Most Iconic Extinct Creatures at the Buena Vista Branch Library on Wednesday, July 19.

Woolly tells the true story of a group of young scientists at Harvard University, under the guidance of famed geneticist Dr. George Church, sequencing DNA from a frozen woolly mammoth found in the Arctic circle. The scientists have been splicing elements of that DNA into the DNA of a modern elephant in hopes of producing viable embryos.

More than just a tale of genetics, Woolly also focuses on Russian scientist Sergey Zimov and his son Nikita’s Pleistocene Park, a nature reserve in northeastern Siberia. They are testing the hypothesis that over hunting, not climate change, was responsible for the extinction of wildlife and the disappearance of grasslands at the end of the Pleistocene era.

The reserve is populated with Pleistocene-era animals such as bison, yak, reindeer and Yakut horses and could be a home for future woolly mammoths.

“At this moment, three ancient, prehistoric woolly mammoth genes have been brought back to life in Asian Elephant cells,” explained Mezrick. “Although it’s impossible to say for sure, the first woolly mammoth could be born as early as 3-5 years from now, although it depends on a lot of factors. The science is here now.”

Mezrich is the author of 18 books, including several New York Times best-sellers. His book, Accidental Billionaires, was made into the movie The Social NetworkBringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions was turned into the movie 21.

Woolly: The True Story of the Quest to Revive One of History’s Most Iconic Extinct Creatures was published July 4, and is already in pre-production with Marty Bowen (Twilight, Maze Runner) at 20th Century Fox. Oscar Sharp is writing and directing and plans are for camera work to begin in winter.

“I think the reasons for bringing back the woolly mammoth are a big part of the story; this isn’t Jurassic Park, Church and his team aren’t building an amusement park,” commented Mezrich.

“The goal is to save the environment from a ticking time bomb represented by the melting permafrost at the ring of the world; to bring back a species that we made extinct, in order to fix the environment- it’s a karmic good that’s also an out of the box way of approaching our relationship with nature.”

Mezrich begins his presentation on the book at 7:00 p.m. and will hold a Q & A and sign books afterwards.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are two iconic public lands that draw visitors from all over California, the country and the world. While summer is the most popular time of year for a visit, the parks attract people year round.

From Cedar Grove and Zumwalt Meadow in the northeastern reaches of Kings Canyon, to Moro Rock’s breathtaking view of the Sierras in the southern part of Sequoia, the two parks provide 1353 square miles of wilderness and varied terrain to enjoy. Sequoia is the home of Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States at 14, 505 feet.

The visitor centers in Sequoia and Kings Canyon are both at about 6500 feet elevation. Acclimating to the higher elevations is important, as is staying hydrated.

After a twisty turny drive into the parks, from the south or the west, one can make the scenic drive along the Generals Highway, a 32 mile stretch of paved road that connects the two parks.

Lodgepole Village is a good base from which to explore, with a cafe and a general store, a ranger station, laundromat and showers. The fairly easy hike to Takopah Falls begins just east of the Lodgepole parking lot.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon are home to a lot of wildlife, including black bears (which come in brown and cinnamon colors too), pesky marmots, mountain lions, snakes and deer.

Even in summer, a few inches of snow can accumulate in these higher elevations, so carrying chains year round really is a must.

More information on Sequoia and Kings Canyon, including day hikes, facilities, camping and lodging in the park, can be found here. The parks are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For a nominal entrance fee of $30 per vehicle, good for one week, the exhilarating High Sierras and the great outdoors is just a few hours away.

Editor’s Note: While there’s always a lot going on in Burbank, myBurbank’s “Get Out Of Town!” highlights some of our favorite activities and events outside the town borders.
