Backseat Bandits Are Back

The notorious thieves who have been stealing the third row seats from SUV’s are still out there.   On November 29, “Black Friday,” between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., they stuck at the Burbank Town Center’s parking structure at 501 N. Third St.   The thieves targeted at 2007 Yukon, punching out the driver’s side door lock to gain entry, before making off with the third row seats.

Beware – Thieves Targeting Shoppers’ Cars

The Burbank Police Department is warning that it is the time of year when thieves are out looking for valuables left in parked cars while the owners are shopping.   The department suggests you store your purchases out of sight and lock your vehicle.  Their holiday shopping motto is:  “Hide it, Lock it, Keep it.”

Here are two burglaries from parked cars that occurred on November 29, “Black Friday.”

Take Your Kid To Shoplift Day

There’s nothing quite like a family that does things together — unless it’s shoplifting.  That was  the case Thanksgiving eve, when two women and a 12 year-old girl went to Macy’s.

According to Burbank Police, the women and girl selected clothing items, including shirts, pants, and jackets  from the store.  After concealing them, the trio tried to walk out of the store without paying.  Store security personnel stopped them and recovered the clothing, valued at $314.

When Burbank Police Officers arrived, they cited one of the women, Silvia Buenrostro, 43, and the girl, and released them.  The other woman, Gabriela Buenrostro, 45, of Burbank, was placed under arrest for petty theft and transported to the Burbank Jail. Her bail was set a $1,000.

Reverse Discrimination Hate Crime

Burbank Police are looking for the public’s help in solving an unusual hate crime.  Sometime between November 9 and 27, and unknown suspect or suspects vandalized the fence at a home in the 1400 block of Chandler Blvd. with the words “F_ _ _ White People.”  Anyone with information is urged to call the department at 818-238-3000.

Thief Leaves Victim Tire-Less

Someone made off with a spare tire from a 2006 Toyota SUV that was parked in the Empire Center near Target.  The theft occurred on November 26, between 10 and 11 a.m.

Illegal U-Turn Leads Directly To Jail

A man driving with a car full of marijuana made an illegal U-turn in front of a police officers early Sunday, November 24.    When the officer pulled the car over at Victory Blvd. and Rose St., he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside.  When asked if he had any marijuana in the car, the driver told the officer he had a “large” quantity of it in the car.

A search of the car resulted in the recovery of a significant amount of marijuana and cash.  So despite his honesty, the driver, Johnny Hung Le, 31, of Fountain Valley, was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale and transporting marijuana.  He was booked into the Burbank Jail with bail set at $25,000

Traffic Stop Turns Up Drugs And More

After observing a vehicle with a broken windshield run a red light, Burbank Police Officers pulled the driver over at Orange Grove Ave. and First St. just before 11 p.m. Friday, November 22.

When the officers contacted the driver and occupants of the car, they detected the odor of burnt marijuana.  A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up marijuana, heroin, narcotics paraphernalia, and stolen property.  The officers also found a tire iron the was in the driver’s door pocket.  The driver apparently kept it there for “security.”  It just happens to be illegal to keep a deadly weapon with the intent to assault someone, in your car.

The driver, David Tordjman, 20, of Tarzana, was placed under arrest for drug possession, receiving stolen property, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, driving under the influence, and possession of a dangerous weapon in his vehicle.  It’s not know if he also received a ticket for running the red light and the broken windshield, but those were the least of his worries.

Bicycle Patrol Breaks Up Drug Deal

Burbank Police Officers patrolling on bicycles in the parking structure used by patrons at the AMC 16 theaters, came across two men who were using it for an entirely different purpose.

The officers noticed the odor of burning marijuana coming from a car parked in the Collections complex located at 250 N. First St., just before 10 p.m. Friday, November 22.  When the officers contacted the two men inside the parked car, they agreed to let the vehicle be searched. That search turned up marijuana, concentrated cannabis, and LSD.

An investigation determined that Kelvin Rodeo, 24, of Glendale had the marijuana and had sold the LSD to the other man in the car, Oscar Gonzalez, 21, of Los Angeles.  Gonzalez was determined to be tin possession of the concentrated cannabis and LSD.  Both men were booked into the Burbank Jail on a variety of drug charges.  Bail for Rodeo was set at $30,000, and $10,000 for Gonzalez.

Citizens Tackle Thief Who Grabs Woman’s Phone

A woman talking on her cell phone outside the Flapper’s Comedy Club at 5:30 p.m. November 7, had her phone ripped out of her hand by a man who ran off with it through the Ross parking structure.

As the 37 year-old victim chased after the thief, two citizens join the chase and tackle the suspect in front of Buffalo Wild Wings, located at 127 E. Palm Ave.  A security guard from a nearby business holds the suspect until police arrive.  Rigoberto Ademir Rivera, 33, of Sun Valley was arrested for grand theft.

The victim backtracked the route of the chase and located her phone.  The suspect had apparently tossed it while running.  The two citizens who tackled the suspect left the scene before police arrived, so their identity is unknown at this time.

Bicycle Thief Caught In The Act

A pick-up truck blacked out in the alley at Victory Blvd. and California St. was spotted by Burbank Police Officers on routine patrol in the area on November 3, at 11:15 p.m.  As the officers watched, the observed the a man place a bicycle in the bed of the 2003 Chevrolet truck.

When they contacted the man about his suspicious behavior, the owner of the bicycle advised the officers that his bicycle had been stolen.  The suspect, Juan Manuel Peregrino, 38, of Burbank was placed under arrest for petty theft.  A search incidental to his arrest turned up suspected methamphetamine Peregrino’s wallet.  He was booked into the Burbank Jail for petty theft, possession of a controlled substance, and an additional charge of bringing drugs into a jail.  His bail was set at $25,000.

Burglar Tripped Up By Alarm

When Burbank Police Officers responded to a report of the burglary alarm activated at Dana Drugs, located at 317 N. Pass Ave. at 3:50 a.m. November 2, the suspect virtually came right to them.

Out of the shattered glass of the front door came Arlow Stewart, 31, of Burbank.   Stewart had various items from the store in his possession.  He was taken into custody without incident.  He was booked into the Burbank Jail for burglary, with bail set at $20,000.

If You Are A Crook, Don’t Drive A Car With Expired Tags

A car with expired registration caught the attention of Burbank Police Officers on routine patrol November 2, at the intersection of Burbank Blvd. and San Fernando Blvd.  A records check on the license plate revealed outstanding warrants associated with the car.

When the officers pulled the vehicle over and contacted the occupants they found that the driver, Claudia Santiago, 27, of Pacoima, did not have her driver’s license available.  The passenger, Siegfred Abrogena, 27, of Burbank was on probation of identity theft.  When both were asked to step out of their vehicle, a prying tool fell from Abrogena’s person.

After receiving permission to search the vehicle, officers found a backpack in the back seat, which contained a lock pick set, drill, gloves, mask, and a prying tool.  They also found items belonging to other people, and mail and “washed” checks.  Both suspects were placed under arrest for identity theft, forgery, and possession of burglary tools.  Abrogena was also arrested for probation violation.  Both were booked into the Burbank Jail.  Santiago’s bail was set at $50,000, while Abrogena’s was set at $75,000.

Bank Employees Spot Another Forgery Suspect

If you are trying to cash a forged check, the Chase Bank branch in Magnolia Park is a place you may want to avoid.  For the second time in recent weeks, a teller at the bank spotted a forged check and alerted police.

In this latest incident on November 1, the suspect came into the bank around 2:15 p.m. and attempted to cash the check.  Burbank Police were called, and detained the suspect while the matter was investigated.  The bank was able to verify that the check was forged and the suspect, Marcelo Mena-Gaete, 20, of Winnetka was arrested for forgery and transported to the Burbank Jail.  His bail was set at $20,000.

Hi-Tech Camera System Spots Stolen Car

The camera system that automatically reads license plates on cars checks them against a stolen vehicle data base, alerted a Burbank Police Officer to a stolen car November 1.

The officer found the unoccupied car parked in the are aof Glenoaks Blvd. and Elmwood Ave. around 9:40 a.m. While canvassing the area for witnesses who may have seen the suspect who parked the car, a woman approached the officer.  She said she knew the owner of the car and had the owner’s permission to use it.   The vehicle had been reported as stolen from Inglewood, and the woman was listed as the suspect.

Anita McKeever, 47, of Duarte, was arrested for auto theft and booked into the Burbank Jail.  Her bail was set at $25,000.

Taking care of those less fortunate at this special time of the year has been a tradition going back 77 years in Burbank.  The Burbank Coordinating Council, an organization made up of representatives from most of the various organization in Burbank, began the Christmas Basket Program in 1936.  Now known as the Holiday Basket Program, it’s something everyone in the community can participate in.

Gifts for older kids too. (Photo by Ross A. Benson)

The Burbank Coordinating Council plans to help about 575 families (over 2000 adults, teens, and children) this holiday season with gifts of food and toys and other gift items.   Burbank City departments, service clubs, schools, businesses, churches and individuals all join together to collect donations from the community and spread holiday cheer to those in need. While many organizations and individuals in Burbank have adopted about 475 families, the BCC will build baskets for any families not adopted.  It is estimated that there will be between 100 and 200 families who have not been adopted.

On Saturday, December 7, the BCC will hold a food drive for the unadopted families at 13 stores in the city, including markets, CVS Drug Stores, and Kmart. The BCC still needs helpers to collect food from shoppers at these stores, and people may call Barbara Salamon at (818) 843-7571 to volunteer for an hour or more on Saturday.  It’s an activity that the whole family can participate in. The volunteers simply pass out a list of needed items as shoppers enter the store.  Donors then leave the items as they exit the stores.

Items needed most are paper goods (toilet paper, paper towels, napkins), stuffing, shampoo, toothpaste, laundry soap, and grocery gift cards for perishable items. Items like cookies, pudding, fruit bars, tuna, macaroni and cheese, gravy, pancake mix and syrup, hot cereals, diapers, and baby supplies are always needed. Any non-perishables would be welcomed and used in the baskets.

The age group the BCC always needs help with providing are for teens, since most people donate toys or stuffed animals for younger children. Gift cards to local stores and fast food restaurants, makeup kits, board games, DVDs, adult sweatshirts and jackets are some of the suggested gifts for teens. BCC has about 100 teens to help and would welcome gifts for them especially.

“It takes everyone working together to make this tremendous project happen each year,” commented Janet Diel, BCC President, “There are so many ways and days to help — pick one or pick all. Don’t miss the chance to come and ‘feel good’ being a donor or volunteer. It is an experience you will always remember.”

The BCC also needs volunteers to help with packing and sorting food items on Wednesday, December 11, at the Little White Chapel Christian Church.  On Friday, December 13, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. they will be moving everything to Washington Elementary School where baskets will be assembled with food and presents, from 3 p.m. to  9 p.m. The loading and delivering of baskets to all 575 families will be on Saturday, December 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers are also needed that day to call the families to make sure they will be home when the baskets are delivered.

If you would like to volunteer, email CCHolidayBaskets@aol.com, or call Janet Diel at 818-216-9377.  Volunteers are needed for any and all of the days.

On Monday, December 2, Burbank Police officers responded to John Burroughs High School at 8:53 a.m. to investigate a 14-year-old student being treated by Burbank Fire Department for alcohol intoxication. The female student was very uncooperative and was taken to Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center because of her age and level on intoxication.

During the officers’ investigation, it was discovered that the severely intoxicated girl and another girl, age 15, had been drinking tequila in a nearby park before attending school. Initially, school officials were called to the the 14-year-old’s classroom by the teacher who noted the girl appeared intoxicated in class.

The 14-year-old was cited for public intoxication by the officers at the hospital and released to her parents. School officials contacted the 15-year-old’s parents. In these cases, school officials review any police contact with students and look at possible educational code violations which may result in further disciplinary actions by the school district, according to Sergeant Darin Ryburn of the Burbank Police Department.

On Tuesday, December 3, an employee at Beauty Works Hair Salon at 2424 W. Magnolia Blvd. received a phone call on their business line at 2:15 p.m. The caller stated he was from Burbank Water & Power and the business’ account was overdue and power would be shut off within the hour unless payment was made immediately. The employee followed the caller’s directions and purchased a Green Dot Money Pak from a nearby Rite Aid store for $483.

After the employee gave the Money Pak card number to the phony BWP caller, the employee was then told the account was actually $900 past due and they needed to go buy another Money Pak card. The employee hung up and called Burbank Police Department.

Burbank Water & Power will never call and ask for a Money Pak card for payment or threaten to shut off power within an hour, according to both BWP and BPD. If businesses receive calls like these, BWP and the Burbank Police advise hanging up, calling BWP to check on account status and report the attempt to the BPD.

BWP reminds local residents and businesses about the only ways to make a BWP payment:

Via mail: BWP, P.O. Box 631, Burbank, CA 91503-0631
In person: BWP offices, 164 W. Magnolia Blvd., M-F 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Burbank Police Offer Holiday Shopping Tips

Burbank Police Officer Joshua Kendrick has provided the following safety tips for Burbank businesses and shoppers as they face their holiday shopping.

Safety tips for retailers

» Preparation: Retailers should be ready for the holiday shoppers and have an Operational Plan to keep  their stores and shoppers safe.

» Success in the Season: Consulting and collaborating with the local police department is a proactive way of addressing and avoiding conflicts. Don’t be hesitant in calling the police department when needed or if there are questions.

» Crowd Management: Anticipating a large crowd helps implement adequate security. Make sure

the security systems are functional and employees know how to use them.

» Conflict Resolution: Understand that many of the shoppers will be stressed out and be prepared to resolve conflicts before they elevate.

» Communication is Key: The use of signs around the store will give shoppers important information pertaining to the shopping day.

» Product Placement: Stacking up popular items may cause aggression in the crowd when they try to reach for them; consider giving out vouchers for these items instead.

» Parking: Make sure the parking lots have adequate lighting and security to allow patrons to feel safe coming to and from the parking lot.

» Always Smile: Personnel should be reminded to always provide helpful service with a smile. It keeps everyone happy.

Safety tips for shoppers

» Plan it Out: Make a plan for the day and know where you are going. This will help take off any unnecessary stressors during your shopping day.

» Patience, Patience, Patience: During the holiday, long lines should be expected. Safety should be a priority; enter stores in an orderly fashion and do not rush. Be aware and considerate of shoppers around you.

» Hide Your Valuables: A car full of shopping bags is a thief’s gold mine. Hide your purchases in the trunk or under the seats out of sight.

» Protect Yourself: Purses should be carried close to the body and under an exterior garment (i.e. jacket) when possible. Flaps should be secured and turned towards the body at all times. Wallets should be carried in an inside coat pocket, and cash in front pants pocket.

» Dress for the Occasion: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or clothing. These items make yourself a target for thieves.

» Parking: Park in well-lit areas and ALWAYS lock your doors. Carry your keys in your hand when returning to your vehicle and be aware of your surroundings.

» Obey the Laws: Drive at the speed limit. Be aware of the conditions of the road. Watch out for pedestrians. Avoid walking in the middle of traffic or jay walking. Remember to be patient. Accidents can also happen at slow speeds.

More than 2,300 runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators – some dressed in Thanksgiving-themed costumes – rose early Thanksgiving morning to attend the Burbank Community YMCA’s fourth annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, on Nov. 28, firmly establishing the annual fundraising event as a Burbank holiday tradition.

The early morning 5K and 10K– which traced a double-loop course through downtown Burbank – helped raise over $60,000 for the Burbank Y’s membership assistance program, which makes its facilities and programs available to the children and families in the community regardless of ability to pay. There was also a 1K Kid’s Fun Run (ages seven and under).

Male and female winners in 13 age categories were honored in an awards ceremony. View a full list of winners and times at http://www.racewire.com/live_results.php?id=3397

This year’s event included a pre-race expo and warm-up led by a Burbank Y instructor; cash prizes for top runners; medals by age categories and prizes for kids in the 1K Fun Run. Kicking off the events were Grand Marshal and Burbank Y member Gabriel Cordell, a paraplegic who made history this past summer.  Gabriel traveled a staggering 3,100 miles, to become the first person to roll a standard wheelchair across the U.S., from California to New York.

A truck fire on the freeway Wednesday, December 4, sent a large amount of smoke in the air that could be seen throughout Burbank. Burbank Fire Department, along with an Engine company from the Glendale Fire Department, responded to the truck fire on the northbound I-5 freeway at the Lincoln Street exit.

Upon the Fire Departments’  arrival, the cab and engine portion of the truck was well involved with fire, requiring the traffic in all the northbound lanes to be stopped so firefighters could lay out hoses to extinguish the blaze.

The Bobtail truck was hauling restaurant type supplies including barrels of used kitchen cooking oil. That oil started to leak from the truck on the freeway lanes, causing the CHP to issue a Sig Alert. Traffic in both directions was slowed till the truck was towed away. The exit was reopened and Cal-trans were able to put an absorbent on the roadway to prevent cars from sliding around.

Founded less than a year ago, Burbank Community Theater is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to building our community through theater opportunities for people of all ages and levels of experience.  The group began fundraising over the summer with a highly successful Kickstarter.com campaign that raised over $7700 from donors across the globe—Burbank to Boston to Hong Kong.  Through the help of these generous donors and other community organizations, the six founding board members have organized the group’s first production, the beloved musical, Annie.

Olympic Champion Kristi Yamaguchi Visits With Local Schoolchildren At The Rink

Olympic Champion Kristi Yamaguchi made a special appearance at Downtown Burbank’s The Rink midday yesterday, December 4. About 100 children from Miller and Emerson elementary schools in grades 2, 4 and 5 attended the event. Because her flight was a late in arriving, Ms. Yamaguchi did some interviews first and then skated with the children. After skating for a time, everyone took a break and she read from her children’s book Dream Big, Little Pig! and talked with the kids. Ms. Yamaguchi then joined the youngsters on the ice for another skate session.

Ms. Yamaguchi shared with the children that by working hard and never giving up she was able to accomplish her goals and that she also trained for ice skating by taking dance lessons. Ms. Yamaguchi talked about how she worked with her skating partner for the Olympics and the ways she collaborated with an illustrator on her books. She also mentioned that her own children inspired her to write her books for children, including It’s A Big World, Little Pig!, published last year.

“Most of the kids had never ice skated before. They were all smiles the entire time!” commented Peggy Flynn, BUSD Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator. “Miller and Emerson were invited because they were within walking distance. So many wanted to attend that we had to have the principals draw teacher names from a hat. It was a perfect example of how the arts and athletics are not exclusive unto themselves.”

In the weeks leading up to her visit, Mr. Berger’s fifth graders from Emerson watched her Olympic Gold Medal routine in 1992 and read about Ms. Yamaguchi’s life. The Olympic Gold Medalist in Women’s Figure Skating and two-time World Champion signed books from the Miller and Emerson libraries detailing her life and accomplishments.

Panera Bread provided lunch and cookies for all of the students. Each student attending also received an autographed photo of Ms. Yamaguchi. Several news outlets including Channel 4 NBC, The L.A. Times and a Chinese television station also covered the event.

Ms. Yamaguchi’s visit was presented in partnership with Burbank Arts For All Foundation and the BUSD Arts For All program. BAFA supports arts integration programs within the Burbank school district. The Downtown Burbank Partnership and Ice America provided free skate admission for the children from Miller and Emerson elementary schools. Ms. Yamaguchi founded the Always Dream Foundation in 1996 with a mission to aid early childhood literacy and inspire children to reach for their dreams through innovative reading programs.

The Rink in Downtown Burbank is located next to City Hall at the corner of Third and Orange Grove Avenues. The Rink is open daily through January 5, with a variety of open skate sessions.

Yesterday morning, December 4, at 1:00 a.m., Burbank Police stopped to investigate a female arguing with a male in front of Sardo’s Grille and Lounge at 259 N. Pass Ave. The female had been kicked out of the bar by the male security guard due to her intoxicated state and was continuing to act belligerently. The police officer placed the woman, Maria Urena, age 35 from North Hollywood, under arrest for public intoxication. Ms. Urena then began arguing with the officers and spat on the supervising officer’s face at the scene.

During the booking process at the Burbank Jail while she was still handcuffed, Ms. Urena spat on the counter several times and kicked the female Jailer in the shin. Police decided to place her in the detox room, a safe room with a soft floor, due to her intoxicated and combative state. While the officers were taking the handcuffs off Ms. Urena in the detox cell, she bit an officer in the knee.

Ms. Urena was booked for felony assault on a police officer and her bail was set at $20,000. She has since bonded out and is due in court in January.

Special to MyBurbank

With the success the Burbank and Burroughs High girls’ basketball teams have enjoyed the past few seasons, enthusiasm and expectations have grown for both programs.

Supporters of the two schools can expect to see lots of talent and a great crosstown rivalry this season when the two teams hit the floor. Both teams will compete at the Burroughs Magnolia Park Optimist Tourney next week from Dec. 9 – 14.

The rivalry is as strong as ever as both teams are very competitive.

BURBANK-

Just two years ago the Bulldogs were in the CIF Southern Section Division I-A semifinals.

Burbank coach Bruce Breeden

Burbank coach Bruce Breeden

Last season they made it to the second round of the playoffs, going 16-13 and upsetting the Indians in the season finale between the two teams.

Burbank has received a big boost by the addition of two key players.

The Bulldogs have a top point guard in junior Yazzy Sadullah Jr. Sadullah is at her third high school, having played her freshman year at Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, the same school that produced former UCLA and current NBA player Shabazz Muhammad.  Sadullah played at Quest Prep in Las Vegas last year.

Sadullah will have a player to get the ball to inside in 6-foot-5 junior center Anastasia Tsybaeva. Tsybaeva played at BHS as a freshman and last season went to Bellarmine-Jefferson High.

Ashley Linda is the top returner to the team as she was a second-team all-league selection a year ago. Sharis Ghazeri is also back and was an honorable mention all-league selection last year.

Burbank has a solid supporting cast with players who have been promoted through the program.

Seniors Samantha Ainian, Ratiana Karapet and Fatima Cisneros figure to play key roles for the Bulldogs.

Juniors Abby Troy and Ani Temurian also are expected to be in the mix for playing time.

“Our team likes to get up and down the floor in transition,” Burbank coach Bruce Breeden said.  “We look forward to a very successful and competitive season.”

Breeden said he figures the race to the Pacific League title will once again be difficult.

“(The) teams to beat this year (are) Burroughs, Crescenta Valley and Arcadia,” Breeden said. “We should be in the mix for a playoff spot.”

BURROUGHS-

Burroughs went 23-5 and earned a share of the Pacific League title a year ago. Four starters return from that team.

Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan

Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan

The Indians have tough shoes to fill as 6-1 center Aysia Shellmire, who was the co-player of the year in the Pacific League, has graduated.

But with a strong supporting cast, JBHS should be strong.

Junior guard Davina Del Castillo (5-10), a first-team all-league pick last season is back. She averaged 5.6 points and 10.3 rebounds a game last season.

Senior Sidney Ortega (5-5), a second-team all-league pick last season also returns.  She averaged 12.9 points per game.

Junior Delaney Nicol (5-3) is a true point guard who figures to improve on her 5.6 points and 2.9 assists per game average last season.

Senior Jakarra Waddell (5-10) earned honorable mention all-league honors last season. She figures to be the Indians’ top inside presence. Junior center Sienna Brown (5-10) will be the other top player in the key. At 5-10 Waddell, Brown and Del Castillo are the tallest players on the team that will rely heavily on the play of its guards.

“We are a fast tempo team, aggressive, quick, (and) energetic,” Burroughs coach Vicky Oganyan said. “Any one player can lead the team in scoring on a given day. “

The Indians are also looking to the future as the team has just four seniors, but will have five freshmen.

Forward Jocelyn Rieken (5-8) and guards Haley Wilson (5-6),  Justine Barraza (5-3), Teani White (5-3) and Kamryn Cardenaz (5-7) make up the group of players who have an opportunity to be four-year varsity players.

“Our goal is to out-tough our competition every time we step on the floor,” Oganyan said.

Oganyan said she expects the Pacific League to once again be challenging.

“(The) league looks pretty strong. Arcadia, Crescenta Valley, Burbank, (and) Burroughs should all be close hard-fought games,” Oganyan added.

Burbank and Burroughs will meet in league competition for the first time Jan. 24 at Burbank with the tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

They will meet once again in the regular season finale Feb. 13 at Burroughs.

Express Check Out Line To Jail

One shopper must have thought waiting in line to check out wasn’t to his liking, as he simply walked out of the Burbank Target store Wednesday afternoon — with a shopping cart full of merchandise.

According to Burbank Police, Albet Grigorian, 44, of Glendale, a loaded up a shopping cart with everything from cleaning supplies to a small refrigerator. Rather than go through the check out line and pay, Grigorian simply walked out of the store with the merchandise.   He was stopped by store security outside the exit.

Grigorian’s shopping cart contained a basketball hoop set, DVD’s, children’s clothing, toiletries, and an X-Box game system, as well as windex, paper towels, and the refrigerator.  The value of the merchandise totaled $976.  He was placed under arrest for grand theft, and booked into the Burbank Jail.  His bail was set at $20,000.  He is due in court next month.

Every year John Bene’s advanced wood shop class at Burroughs High School builds wooden cars, planes and animal shaped pull toys as a charity project. Students do all the cutting, shaping sanding and assembling.

Then the toys have been built, they are sent to the different art classes where students paint them.

Some of the toys are donated to the Holiday gift basket families that JBHS adopts, some go to Spark of Love, Toys for Tots and Childrens’ Hospital. The students work hard and get quite creative with their designs and the art students do a creative job of painting them.

Bene’s classes have doing this project every year for several years.

On Thursday, December 5, a residential burglary was reported on the 3400 block of W. Clark Ave., occurring between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The victim and her friend left the residence that afternoon, and upon returning, the victim could not open the front door to her home. After eventually getting the door open, she discovered boxes had fallen, blocking the door, and the house had been ransacked.

An unlocked sliding glass door was the possible point of entry and an iMac desktop computer and about $400 worth of coins in a bag were stolen. A neighbor saw a white female, about 5′ 6″ in height, leaving the residence and the victim did not recognize the suspect’s description.

The investigation is ongoing and Burbank Police encourage anyone with information to call the Department at 818-238-3210.
