Like an eagle soaring, the Burroughs High softball team is flying past opponents, including Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat of host Irvine (15-14) in a CIF Southern Section Division III second-round playoff game.

On Thursday, the Indians (23-4) will face host Norwalk, which beat Palos Verdes 2-1 in an opening-round contest and edged Alemany 2-1 in a second-round match.

“We were pretty much in charge the whole game,” Burroughs coach Doug Nicol said. “They scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and had four of their seven hits when Presley [Miraglia] left some balls up.”

Nicol went on: “There were runners on second and third with one out, but she got out of the inning by getting a pop up to Kaitlin [Okimoto] and getting a strikeout.”

For two innings, neither team scored, but that was broken when the Indians tallied three runs in the third.

Okimoto, who plays shortstop, hit a double and Miraglia sacrificed her to third base. Brianna Johnson, who contributed three hits, singled to make it 1-0.

Burroughs extended its advantage to 2-0 when Isabel Frias reached on a fielder’s choice as Johnson crossed the plate, and it became 3-0 after Amanda Flores was safe on a fielder’s choice that drove in a run.

The Indians, who also received two hits from Hannah Talavera, tacked on a solo run in the seventh inning when Okimoto, who had three hits, barely missed a home run and settled for a triple and later scored on a wild pitch.

“I was really happy that we came away with the win because it wasn’t one of our best hitting games,” said Nicol of his club that managed 10 hits. “We hit 13 ground-ball outs and we left 14 runners on base.”

Miraglia was on the money and put together another impressive outing as she went seven innings while allowing seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Miller Theater Arts Department Adds Annual Kindergarten Play

The Miller Theater Arts Department added another annual class play to the ever growing program at Joaquin Miller Elementary School on Monday, May 23, with debut of Tacky The Penguin.

Twenty Kindergarten students in Debbie Winstein’s class prepared for the past several weeks to put on the play. Tacky The Penguin was based on a series of books by Helen Lester about a “unique and odd bird named Tacky and his five companions and the adventures they have together,” according to Winstein.

“I did plays in fifth grade but this is my second year [teaching] Kindergarten and the first play with this age,” said Winstein. “I’m planning on doing one every year with this age. It’s an amazing memory to give them.”

Preparing for the performance and learning lines was a new experience for the youngsters. Getting up on the school auditorium stage was another first.

“I loved when the curtains opened and I saw my family,” enthused student Erika Sarukhanyan.

“I liked being a hunter and singing,” added Mark Fedirko.

“I liked when Tacky was being silly and doing the wrong thing,” said Natali Sarukhanyan.

The performance “definitely built their confidence and helped them work together as a cast to support one another,” said Winstein. “By learning and practicing their lines, they were strengthening their recall [and] memorization sequencing skills.”

When one of her students was absent for the performance, Winstein stepped in to fill the role of penguin.

Burbank Arts for All Foundation awarded the class a $400 grant which paid for most of the costumes, supplies and props. Winstein personally covered the balance of the production costs.

Teachers and staff continue to build the Miller Theater Arts Department. The school recently brought in over $1100 from Miller families through a superhero-themed fundraiser, which will go towards future upgrades to school auditorium to enhance the children’s theater experience.

On March 24, 2016, the United States Postal Service called the Burbank Police Department asking us to respond to the 1700 block of Grismer Avenue regarding two people following a mail carrier in their vehicle.

Officers located the suspicious vehicle and made contact with the occupants, 30 year-old Burbank resident Rane Melkom and 29 year-old Glendale resident Sharis Hambarchian. The investigation revealed Melkom and Hambarchian were in possession of numerous pieces of stolen mail from the area, credit cards and personal checks in other peoples’ names, postal mailbox keys, methamphetamine, heroin and narcotic paraphernalia.

Melkom and Hambarchian were arrested and booked into the Burbank City Jail for a variety of theft and drug charges, including burglary, identity theft, possession of burglary tools and receiving stolen property. Melkom’s bail was set at $50,000, while Hambarchian is being held in-lieu of $65,000 bail. Both are due to appear in court tomorrow morning.

Burbank Police detectives are working in collaboration with the United States Postal Service on this case.

Mail theft and porch package thefts continue to be an on-going issue in Burbank. Visit the Burbank Police Department website for information on how to help protect yourself from being a victim of these crimes.

Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact Detective Mirakyan at (818) 238-3210 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.

Burroughs Volleyball Graduates to Southern California Title Match

With graduation just two hours away, the Burroughs High boys’ volleyball team took care of business quickly Thursday afternoon.

The five seniors were able to easily make it to the graduation ceremony on time after defeating visiting Sanger High 25-15, 25-19, 25-16 in the semifinals of the Division 2 CIF Southern California Regional Boys’ Volleyball Championships.

Burroughs moves on to the final Saturday against Oak Park, the team it lost to a week ago in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 final.

The match is slated for 3 p.m. at Edison High in Huntington Beach. The win Thursday makes this the most successful volleyball team in school history. In 2011 Burroughs lost in the semifinals of the Southern California Regional championships.

“You don’t get a second chance very often,” Andrew Dalmada said about playing Oak Park again. “The fact that we’ve got one is very exciting.”

JB volley5

Junior libero Skyler Bercini, who finished with 13 digs, said the team was able to keep the graduation festivities away.

“When it came to game time we kind of just shut that out,” Bercini said. “I guess there was motivation, but it really came down to just focusing on volleyball first.”

Senior middle blocker Bailey Carter, who finished with eight kills, said his team realized it needed to bounce back after struggling to defeat Chatsworth in the first round on Tuesday.

“We didn’t know anything about the team coming in so we had the mentality that we’ve got to do what we do on our side and it doesn’t matter who is on the other side of the net as long as we take care of our business,” Carter said.

JB volley3

Burroughs coach Joel Brinton was much happier with his team on Thursday.

“The guys were still a little bummed out Tuesday about what happened in CIF (Finals),” Brinton said of the first match with Oak Park. “They obviously got over it. We had a great practice yesterday (Wednesday). I like the way we’re rolling with some momentum now. We’re really excited about the chance.”

Brinton also noted his team was very focused on the match and not the graduation ceremony.

“I was proud of the guys. They understood what the plan was,” he said. “As soon as we’re done we’ll get down to the field and go through it. A couple of guys said I’m just getting my name read out loud, what’s the big deal.”

Dalmada led Burroughs with 18 kills. Cameron Capili had 10 kills and four blocks. Ryan Van Loo had 34 assists.  Sophomore Cole Kaitz had three blocks.

The Burroughs High softball team has a date with top-seeded and nationally ranked Grand Terrace in the CIF Southern Section Division III semifinals at Olive Park on Tuesday with a 3:15 p.m. first pitch.

That’s because on Thursday, the No. 4 seeded Indians (24-4) needed nine innings in order to subdue host Norwalk 4-0 in a quarterfinal match. Burroughs was blanked until the ninth when it scored four runs.

The Indians’ next game is going to be against a team that hasn’t allowed a run during three playoff games.

In the opening round, the Titans, who are 26-1 and ranked 19th in the state and 62nd in the nation by the website maxpreps.com, defeated Peninsula 10-0, then knocked off San Clemente 7-0 in the second round and Don Lugo 8-0 in the quarters.

Norwalk outhit the Indians, 11-7, but was unable to score any runs off ace Presley Miraglia.

Aside from the victory over Norwalk, Burroughs, which has won 15 straight games, has beaten Irvine 4-2 in the second round and drilled Tesoro 8-0 in the first round.

ROse garden memorial dedication veterans book

In 1946 , a group called the Burbank Gold Star Mothers, along with the brother of one Burbank Soldier, began raising funds to create a Memorial Rose Garden at McCambridge Park along the Drive Off Amherst into the center of the park.

It would be a lasting tribute to the Men and Women from Burbank who gave their lives in WWII.

ROse garden memorial veterans bookThe Rose garden would later be moved to the corner of Amherst & San Fernando Road.

There an Obelisk with an Eternal Flame of Remembrance was placed with the rose gardens surrounding it. Later plaques would be added with the names of all Burbankers who gave their lives in all conflicts.

Today it is a reminder that Freedom is not free that a price has been paid.

Each Memorial Day, The city’s Veterans Committee holds a ceremony where all the names are read and a Red Rose is placed on the memorial in their Honor and Remembrance.

If you have never been to this 70 year old sacred Burbank monument or The Memorial Day event, come by this Monday and learn of and remember those who came from Burbank to protect our Freedom but did not return home.

Burger Review: Ribs USA

$

Usually when we walk into a place around 1:45 to 2:00 pm, we expect it not to be very crowded. When we walked into Ribs USA at 2:00 pm, we were the only ones there.

rib usa 3That was our first red flag.

When we walked out at 3:00 pm, not one other customer appeared the entire time. Now not only do we know why, but we can share it with you.

After we sat down, it took about 5 minutes before we even saw a live person. Our server came out (actually a very nice guy) and while he tried to do a good job, just seemed a bit confused – probably confused that someone would actually come in and order food.

I ordered the Angus Classic Burger which was described as 1/3 LB with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and American cheese and bacon, served on a toasted bun with mayonnaise. I asked for cheddar cheese instead of American and was not asked how I wanted the burger cooked.  I would soon learn why. My server suggested the ‘Backyard Burger and when I looked it was not on the menu which he agreed. No way.

rib usa 2When the burger came, it looked more like a construction project than something that was put together with some love and pride. It also looked like it was ready to fall over.

I started to look at it and had no idea what was going through the cook’s mind when he ‘built’ this. To start with the bun was dry. When I started to try and figure out the rest, I was dumbfounded (yes, I know you always think I must be!).

To start with, I had serious doubts that this was Angus beef. There was a small patty on the bottom with lettuce and tomato above it.  Than there was the cheese and all it was is a blob of cheddar cheese just sitting there. Above that there were two more small patties with more lettuce and tomato above that.

rib usa 1The kicker, however, was the fact that there was also bacon on top which I had not ordered. In fact, this bacon was extremely under cooked and just kind of sat there in a pile on top.  I added some BBQ sauce that was on the table to help the taste, but that was just hopeful thinking on my part.

This burger was bland and when you took a bite of the cheddar cheese, it tasted like rubber. This was an extremely hard burger to get through but I did it for you guys.  Within 30 seconds the bottom bun was full of grease and starting to self destruct.

So much hope, yet so much disappointment.

Side Notes: We ordered the potato skins as an appetizer and I could not finish even one. It looked like some old bacon sprinkled on top and then thrown in the microwave and extremely greasy. Also tried the cole slaw and it did not seem as though it was made that day. On the other hand, the fries were cooked great and were the highlight of the entire meal.

Ribs USA is located at 2711 Olive Ave., Burbank. 818 841-8872.

Burroughs Volleyball Wins CIF Southern California Regional Title

Five players already had their high school diplomas in hand. Still feeling a need to leave their mark, the Burroughs High boys’ volleyball team came out motivated and focused and put together one of the greatest performances any team in school history has achieved.

Facing a team they had lost to just a week earlier, the Indians defeated Oak Park 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 to win the CIF Southern California Division 2 Regional championship at Edison High in Huntington Beach.

“This is the best feeling going out,” said Cameron Capili, one of the five graduating seniors. “It did hurt losing CIF, but winning (Southern California) is much more meaningful and it means more because we played the same team again.”

Andrew Dalmada, who had a match-high 19 kills, said losing the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship a week earlier, was something that the Indians struggled with at times.

017

“This entire week we’ve had it in the back of our minds,” Dalmada said. “With Chatsworth and Sanger we knew we had to focus on that, but we worked for the end goal. You want to win both, but it doesn’t always happen that way. Last Saturday was a great game. Coming back, this is so satisfying.”

The win was a huge accomplishment for coach Joel Brinton, who started the program 10 years and has gone on to win seven consecutive league championships.

“It’s a joy for the kids and the program,” Brinton said. “This has been a lot of hard work for 10 years. This has been a lot of hard work for myself. It has been a lot of hard work for these kids over the past three or four years.  They did a great job following the game plan and executing it.”

Burroughs (31-6) appeared to be more relaxed coming out compared to the CIF Southern Section championship.

“We didn’t do a lot of things we needed to last Saturday that we did today and the difference was shown,” Brinton said. “Our middles were way better, our blocking was way better. Our serving was way better. I think that experience of playing in a championship game. Last week they had never done it before so I think this time it was a little more low key because we’ve already been through this.”

020

Setter Ryan Van Loo, a four-year varsity player who has signed with Lewis University, had a match-high 47 assists.

“The loss in CIF lit a fire under us and we carried that throughout the week. It feels great to get another chance with them a win a (Southern California) championship,” Van Loo said.” I can’t put it into words. It feels so great to win a championship, especially against these guys. They are so good. We knew all week we needed to work harder and better to get to Saturday and we did. We completed our journey.”

013

Burroughs rallied to win the first game 25-23. A kill by Conner Ludlum made it 24-23 and a block by Bailey Carter sealed it.

Oak Park (36-4-2) came back and won the second game as Burroughs fell behind after leading 15-14 at one point.

The third game was also tight with Burroughs going down 23-22. But Dalmada, Van Loo and Carter all had kills to turn things around.

In the fourth and final game, Burroughs jumped out a 19-12 lead. Oak Park rallied to make it interested at 19-17 and 22-20, but the Indians matched every challenge in winning 25-21.

009

“Right now it’s a little bittersweet because we have a great group of guys,” Dalmada said.” This is one of the best groups of guys I’ve ever been associated with and the fact that it’s ending is sad. At least we end on a high note.”

Van Loo also reflected on his time at Burroughs.

“Out of my four years on varsity this moment is the greatest moment I’ll ever have of Burroughs volleyball,” he said. “I’m lucky to be on this team. I’m lucky to have this coaching staff and all these fans that came out. It’s just a great experience and I’m never going to forget it.”

022

Capili finished 14 kills and 12 digs. Conner Ludlum had nine kills. Skyler Bercini had 13 digs.

The George Washington Elementary Boosters Club received a $10,000 matched donation from Warner Bros. Entertainment on the last day of school, May 26, at a school-wide concert.

“Our Boosters main focus is to fundraise for weekly music instruction in grades Pre-K, TK, Kindergarten and first grade because the District funds weekly music instruction in grades second through fifth,” explained Washington Principal Brandi Young.

(Photo by © Ross A Benson)

“Our school also started a Washington Band this year in fourth and fifth grade,” she added. “Fifty-five students have learned to read music and play an instrument such as flute, percussion, saxophone, trumpet and trombone.”

The Washington Boosters Club pays for two teachers from Education Through Music – Los Angeles (ETM-LA) to lead weekly vocal classes for TK – 1 and the fourth- and fifth-grade band. Erik Garcia teaches TK – 1 and Dr. Rachel Hockenberry leads the band.

Burroughs Historic Softball Season Ends With 7-0 Loss In Semifinals

Burroughs High’s softball team didn’t play an All-Star team in Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section Division III semifinal game at Olive Park, but it may have felt that way.

Grand Terrace, top-seeded and ranked No. 2 in the nation by the website maxpreps.com, waltzed to a 7-0 victory, its 25th consecutive straight win, 17th shutout, and will face Redondo Union in the title game on Saturday.

It’s not that the No. 4 seeded Indians (24-5) didn’t give a mighty effort, it’s that the Titans, who have 12 players committed to Division I college programs, were simply too good. Burroughs had its 15-game winning streak snapped.

Three players will play for the University of Oklahoma and they include pitcher Melanie Olmos, third baseman Eliyah Flores and outfielder Alycia Flores.

This was a special and talented Burroughs softball team as it became the first squad to reach the semifinals.

“This was a competitive game early,” Burroughs coach Doug Nicol said. “But we needed to play near-perfect and we didn’t. They played hard and they never gave up. I’m really proud of this team.”

Olmos was stellar in the circle as she allowed two hits with one walk, had five strikeouts and one hit batter in five and one-third innings.

“It begins in the circle,” Grand Terrace assistant coach Wil Loredo said of the pitching staff that includes Yesenia Morrison, who went one and two-third frames, while striking out three.

Last season, Grand Terrace reached the championship game, and came within one inning of winning.

Javier Olmos is the other assistant coach and he emphasized team play. “All the girls play for top organizations. This isn’t new to them. This is a good group of girls.”

Olmos had praise for the Indians: “That team over there is a fine team and well-coached,” he said. “We knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. There are several really good players on that team. We did our research.”

The only Burroughs players reaching base via a hit or walk were Kaitlin Okimoto in the first, Amanda Flores in the second and Hannah Talavera in the third.

Olmos gave up a two-out walk to Okimoto in the first inning, but then induced Presley Miraglia to pop up.

Olmos retired the first two batters in the second, but Flores lashed a base hit up the middle. Olmos fanned Destiny Velasquez to retire the side.

With one out in the third inning, Talavera tripled to right field only to see Lauren Lopez and Okimoto each pop up.

Olmos worked a 1-2-3 fourth inning, but then hit Flores to lead off the fifth. Olmos then struck out Velasquez and Brianna Devellano and got Talavera to foul out.

“I thought we held them down pretty well,” said Devellano, the catcher who went hitless in two at-bats and will play at Pasadena City College or El Camino College. “It wasn’t a blowout.”

Olmos retired the side in order in the sixth, but Olmos’ defense committed its only error in the seventh with two out when Flores was safe. Velasquez then fanned to end the contest.

Miraglia wasn’t especially sharp as she surrendered 11 hits with one hit batter while fanning four in six and two-third frames.

Mia Storer went one-third of an inning and walked a batter.

“I’m always a little nervous in the first inning,” said Miraglia, whose defense committed three errors. “Knowing that if you lose, your season is over makes you even more nervous. What I try to do is forget about all that and just try and get the next out.”

Miraglia added: “This is the best any Burroughs team has done. I’m really proud of what we accomplished.”

The Titans (27-1) scored in four of seven innings including the first frame when they led 1-0 after Miraglia allowed three hits.

Eliyah Flores doubled to left field and went to third base on a sacrifice by Alyssa Graham. Flores was erased on a force out at the plate on a terrific throw by third baseman Brianna Johnson.

“I came out and struggled in my first at-bat,” said Johnson, who fanned three times. “I was more confident in my other at-bats. They’re a solid team.”

Lilly Bishop reached on a fielder’s choice and pinch runner Alexis Lopez entered the game.

Olmos was safe on a hit to right center as Lopez raced to third base and scored on a single by Morgan Parsons.

Miraglia went 1-2-3 in the second inning, but allowed two runs in the third inning when Eliyah Flores had an infield single, went to third on Graham’s single to right, and scored on an error.

Graham moved to third base on the miscue and crossed the plate when Bishop was safe on a fielder’s choice.

Miraglia toured a perfect fourth and fifth frame, but then ran into trouble in the sixth as she gave up three hits including a two-run homer to Parsons as Olmos, who singled to left, scored in front of her.

Danielle Rico then followed with an infield single, but Miraglia escaped without any more runs scoring.

The Titans tacked on two runs in the seventh inning when Graham singled with one out and scored on Bishop’s double to right center.

Lopez came in as a pinch runner for Bishop, went to third on a single by Alexis Lemus and crossed the plate on an error.

School District to Save $10 Million in Energy Costs

$

As part of a district-wide energy program that will be reaching all schools in the upcoming year, the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD) celebrated the site energization of new solar and energy efficiency work at the Burbank Adult School.

District and City stakeholders, local elected officials, and regional partners in attendance celebrated the District’s leadership in leveraging their bond Measure S to build their comprehensive program.

The aptly named Sustainable Bond Relief Program, administered by local partner OpTerra Energy Services, helps the District achieve energy and water conservation, while integrating hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) engagements tied to the new energy technology into existing district curriculum. The program will save the District $10 million in energy costs.

In March 2013, Burbank passed bond Measure S to improve classrooms and make ongoing facility upgrades. In order to fill the gap between the existing bond funding and the needed costs for additional improvements related to classroom size reduction standards, OpTerra presented a solution to implement energy upgrades under a design-build contract. OpTerra helped BUSD free up bond dollars to be reallocated to underfunded bond initiatives, such as additional classrooms and 21st century technology upgrades, ensuring that the District will be able to fund a comprehensive program with no additional costs.

(Photo by © Ross A. Benson)

BUSD’s Sustainable Bond Relief Program to improve and enhance infrastructure with modernized energy performance is funded through a dynamic combination of Measure S bond dollars, Prop 39 funding, and a tax-exempt lease purchase.

The first year of BUSD’s program marks the beginning of a series of integrated capital projects that will improve the District’s environmental and fiscal sustainability and provide ongoing financial relief to Measure S. OpTerra supports BUSD’s vision for a long-term sustainable future by guaranteeing the energy savings used to finance the infrastructure upgrades.

Starting with last summer’s conversion of landscaping irrigation systems to reclaimed water and now installing solar equipment across different schools, BUSD is achieving positive gains in sustainability from water use to energy performance.

By converting its irrigation systems to reclaimed water during the summer of 2015, BUSD has not only saved the region an estimated 26 million gallons in potable water each year, but also elevated consciousness within the community about state water restrictions.

The Burbank Adult School is one of the first of several sites to be energized with renewable power, and the District has made additional improvements designed to enhance student safety and improve their energy profile, including:

  • 742 kW total of solar PV on parking lot and student shade structures and rooftops across eight sites upon program completion
  • New and upgraded AC systems and ventilation systems
  • Upgraded HVAC systems, including new District-wide energy management system and duct cleaning
  • Interior and exterior LED lighting system upgrade with controls
  • Upgrades to PA systems and life safety systems
  • New lunch shelter, area asphalt, and reconstruction of parking lots

Community partners lauded Superintendent Hill and the BUSD Board for their leadership in maximizing the impact of their community-supported bond to serve as a model for other school districts across Southern California at the celebration event.

John Mahoney, CEO of OpTerra, shared, “OpTerra is excited to be working with our local partner Burbank Unified School to demonstrate how a school district can do more with available funding coupled with community-supported bonds. Thanks to state programs like Prop 39 and local utility rebates and incentives like those from Burbank Water and Power, now is the time for schools to leverage the power of a sustainable energy program to drive fiscal and environmental success across the community like BUSD has done.”

As their energy savings continue to grow, Burbank Unified School District plans to invest the ongoing, projected savings into continued STEM curricula and hands-on modules designed to nurture the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Burger Review: Granville Cafe

When you head to Downtown Burbank there is always some good news and bad news. The bad news is that you will not be able to park anywhere near where you want to go because the parking and traffic is always jammed. The good news is that at least parking is free. It is one of the small things that makes Burbank special.

granville 3So once you are able to park and hoof it to Granville Cafe, you are welcomed into the open aired building (on hot days). Once entering, you are given a menu and have to wait in line to place your order before finding a seat. Food and drinks are brought to your table.

Ordered the Village Burger with cheddar cheese. It also comes with roma tomato, red onion, garlic Aioli, arugula on a  brioche bun. I had to immediately ask to have the arugula replaced with regular lettuce.  I just cannot eat a burger with leaves, trees and branches.

Granvlile 2When the burger came it looked great and for $12, it better look great.  The bun was fresh and the cheese was flowing.  The hand packed patty was extremely juicy and was cooked perfectly medium rare. In fact, on each bite, several drops of juice flowed from the burger.  The only negative was the fact that some of this juice made its way to the bottom bun causing it to get a tad soggy, but was able to stay together until the burger was fully consumed.

What was a little odd but did not affect the burger too much was the patty was actually so loosely hand packed, it started to break apart inside the bun as I was eating it. The Aioli spread on top completed the taste. While I do like thousand island dressing on burgers, I have also come to enjoy the Aioli.

Was the burger itself great – yes. But to me, it should be for the $12 price and after you add french fries for an additional $5.50, you have spent your lunch budget for the week. When you also take into account the parking, it is just not worth it. If you have extra flow and are spending the day Downtown than I get it.  But this is not worth the trip for only the burger, especially if you have a family to feed.

Granvlile 1Side Notes: Ordered the fries (they have a large fries but not as large as a steak fry) and asked for well done.  They came brown on the outside but were not well done at all. I was not able to finish them.  I saw other side dishes that I might have tried I did not see when I first ordered after having to negotiate standing in line so I did not try anything else.  The french fries were definitely a fail.

Students of Garri Dance Studio will be stepping lively and smiling widely as they celebrate their 58th anniversary recital “Party in the USA” this Sunday in the Burbank High School Auditorium, 902 N. Third St.

The two shows at 2 and 7 p.m. are each filled will Americana-inspired songs illustrated by such dance styles as ballet, tap, jazz, musical theatre, contemporary and hip hop, said Artistic Director Megan Baade.GarriDanceStudio-5

Students ages 2 to 5 will be showcased during the 2 p.m. show while students 6 to adults will be featured in the 7 p.m. show.

Highlights include the studio’s staff performing a tap dance during the evening show, Baade said. Dancers will wear Rosie the Riveter costumes to illustrate the Americana theme.

Rosie the Riveter, depicted with a red bandana around her head and wearing a denim short-sleeved shirt, was a U.S. cultural icon during World War II that represented the women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II while the men went off to serve their country.

“My Grandmother passed away about two months ago so that’s why I wanted to dress up like Rosie the Riveter because she worked in a steel factory, so I thought it would be fun if we dedicated our staff tap dance to her,” she said.

Also planned is a dance including students’ dads.

“The girls and their dads will be dancing together to the song ‘It Takes Two’ and they are doing a hip-hop dance,” Baade said.

Special recognition will be bestowed on several girls who are celebrating special anniversaries with the show.GarriDanceStudio-4

“One of our students is celebrating her 13th recital while another is celebrating 12 recitals,” she said. “Then there are two girls celebrating 10-year anniversary recitals with us. We are very proud of our longevity in the community having taught four generations over the 58 years we’ve been in business in Burbank.”

Baade said another highlight of the anniversary recital is a special piece performed by graduating seniors of the dance studio. Two young women going off to college in the fall will perform a ballet duet to “Amazing Grace”.GarriDanceStudio-2

“It’s going to be so much fun! I just love our show this year,” Baade said. “We put a lot of thought into it and just a lot of little details, music choices and acknowledging these special dancers who have been with us for so many years. We are carrying on the tradition of the studio that Peg Garri started so many years ago.”

Tickets are available for pre-sale through Garri Dance Studio for $25 or at the door for $30, until sold out. Call (818) 846-4390. Garri Dance Studio is also accepting registration for summer camps, weekly dance classes and music lessons. For more information, go to garridance.com.

Residents Fight to Keep Roller Hockey Rink from Wrecking Ball

Local families were in an uproar this week over the news that a highly successful Parks and Recreation Roller Hockey program is on the chopping block. This is a program that was brought back to life from extinction in 2009, when Community Sports Foundation owner, Frank Dalessandro, took over running the program from the City of Burbank.

It currently serves 21 youth teams and 58 adult teams annually. That is 690 kids and 2,320 adults. This is a program that runs from 3pm-10pm weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday. The success of this sport in Burbank speaks for itself.

This program is being terminated, as a letter of termination was served to Community Sports last week, a year before the current contract is up for renewal. The reason given for the termination of the program is the safety of the dasher boards used at the facility.

Upon news of the termination, one parent started a social media campaign, using the hashtag #SaveBurbankHockey and it’s gained national attention from Boston University Roller Hockey, Colorado University Roller Hockey, the Los Angeles Kings and many more.

The Roller Hockey facility was built in 1997 and was initially run by the YMCA. The City of Burbank took over operation in 2004, ultimately leading to the near closure of the rink permanently. In 2009, Community Sports Foundation (CSF) made an agreement with Burbank and brought it back to life. CSF has grown it into a program that is so successful, they’ve had to even cut back on their practice time to allow everyone room.Hockey youth-9-under-2013

Frank Dalessandro, of Community Sports, offers free instructional skating to kids just learning, and he’s actually the one who teaches them. He offers free equipment to those who do not own or cannot afford equipment of their own. He offers a waive of the $150 fee per season to play if you’re a goalie…this is true for the kids as well as the adults. Frank also, with each season, changes the teams up to help kids and adults play with groups that are not stacked, to allow everyone to work on their skills and play fairly.

Frank Dalessandro is a Chicago born and raised husband and father of two children. He is a quiet and very reserved presence at the Ralph Foy hockey facility. He’s supportive of anyone who walks into his office and makes running a hockey rink look easy.

There has been threat of termination of this program for months. When asked about why this hasn’t been made more visible to the people in the roller hockey community, Frank says “I never wanted to worry the kids.”

The main issue for this facility closing is the dasher board system. This system was put in, in 1997 and used boards have been placed when another board breaks.
The manufacturer has stopped making this system and therefore, boards will be hard to find. Actually, they’ll be impossible to find without purchasing a new set.

No one is going to argue this point. The fact is, the rink does need new boards. The rink has needed new boards for a while. The roller hockey rink gets so much use, it really needs an entire new system.

Two years ago, In March, 2014, Community Sports Foundation submitted a proposal to the Parks Board suggesting an upgrade. CSF was suggesting building an indoor roller hockey rink with the addition of adding a second rink. At that point, the rink was already at 90% capacity.Hockey Go Kings Banner

In his submission, Mr. Dalessandro states, “The upgraded facility would eliminate all of the current challenges faced with being a single outdoor rink. Player safety, game performance, scheduling, available rink time, community involvement and rink maintenance are all areas which can be improved upon with an upgraded indoor facility.”

Three different options for financially supporting this project were submitted, including one at no cost to the city. Letters from USC Roller Hockey and Cal State Northridge were also submitted stating both University programs would do what was needed to help support this upgrade, as both teams were looking for Burbank to become a “Home Rink.”

Also suggested at that time, was the desire to bring in recognized tournament roller hockey. The only way to do that is to supply a two rink facility. Tournament ball mostly requires indoor facilities for the same reasons Frank is looking for coverage at the current rink. Heat, rain and debris all effect rink time.

This proposal was not passed, as the desire to keep the green space is priority.

In this submission to Parks & Rec, Mr Dalessandro notes the desire for a new dasher board system.

The ideal situation for this rink to exist is for CSF to fully fund the operation and maintenance at the rink. This has never been disputed. The rent, agreed upon in CSF’s contract with the city, that CSF pays is to go into a specific fund to supply what is needed for the upkeep of the facility. The City of Burbank is suggesting that the amount it costs them to maintain this location exceeds the rent they agreed to in the contract with CSF. This contract expires June 2017, although the contract states that either party can cancel the contract without cause at any time.

At the moment, a letter of early termination has been sent to Mr. Dalessandro, encouraging the closing of the rink with an ending date of September 2016. The specific reason is due to the possibility of a board breaking and becoming a liability to safety. If a board breaks before then, the rink will be shut down immediately.

No one in the City is denying the fact of the success of this program, they’re actually praising it. At a recent Parks and Rec Board meeting on April 14th, Gwen Indermil, of the Burbank Parks & Rec department said, “The numbers have been very impressive, It’s a very popular program for us.”

Department head Judie Wilke and board member, Jonathan Barta, both also mentioned the success of the program.

So, why is a highly successful program ready to be eliminated?

Money.

The city does not have funds to upgrade the facility. Mr. Dalessandro was asked in the April 14th Parks & Rec Board Meeting to return with suggestions or options on his end to aid in the saving of the rink.

This week, parents, grandparents, coaches, players and supporters showed up to the City Council meeting on Tuesday night, June 7th, to address the council with their thoughts on the closing of the rink.Hockey Adult Team 4261334

Last night, at the Parks & Rec board meeting, they showed up again. It was standing room only in Burbank’s Council Chambers, as members of the community lined up to share, again, why this facility and program needs to be saved.

Mr. Dalessandro, also, as asked, came back to the board with multiple options for preserving this facility. Those options will be shared directly with the Parks and Rec department and then will go to the board for review before being presented to the City Council.

One thing was very clear, the Parks and Recreation staff and Board alike, are all in favor of saving this rink. So, as an entire community comes together in typical Burbank fashion, Community Sports, community members, department staff, the advisory board and city council will all be working hard to keep those wheels moving.

Burroughs Boys Basketball Comes on Strong in Win

It is early in the summer and the Burroughs High boys’ basketball team is still getting used to playing under new coach Allan Ellis.

After a slow start the Indians finished strong in a 55-45 win over Temple City High in the St. Francis Varsity Shootout.

“I thought we started off slow and lacked some intensity. We were a little tired from the game before,” Ellis said of his team, which defeated Mark Keppel 55-43 earlier in the day. “(Then) we (picked) up our intensity and we played a lot harder and a lot faster and our defense was a lot better.  That’s the type of team we have to be. “

Burroughs trailed 18-7 in the first half, before 6-foot-5, returning  All-CIF multi-purpose player Tristan Hull teamed up with Ryan Del Castillo to help the Indians catch Temple City at 21.

041

After being down 25-23 at halftime, Burroughs took over in the second half, led by Hull.

“I want him to be versatile,” Ellis said of Hull. “I want him to play for himself, yet at the same time create for others. That’s what I’m looking for him to be is that guy that draws double teams. He has that type of ability and talent.”

The Indians also got solid player from point guard Stefon Foster.

Brannan Shepherd also showed some promise as an outside shooter.

Ellis said Hull’s versatility gives him some options in how to build his team.

048

“We’re definitely going to build around Tristan. He’s the leader of the team,” Ellis said. “ We have huge expectations for him, but he has huge expectations for himself. He’s going to continue to grow to be that leader for us to take us to where we want to go.”

Burbank Boys Basketball Shows Promise in Loss

In summer league basketball the scoreboard is generally something of little concern.

That was the case when the Burbank High boys’ basketball team faced host St. Francis in the St. Francis Varsity Shootout Saturday.

Missing several key players, Burbank fell to the Golden Knights 60-38.

“I love this group. We have a good mixture,” Bulldogs coach Jamayne Potts said.
“We have a lot of veterans returning and a lot of young guys returning back into the program. Some are from the freshman team that went 24-3. I think we have a good mixture of seniors and our soon-to-be sophomores.

072

Missing against St. Francis were four returning varsity players.

Star Michael Woods was one of those missing players, along with Abdullah Kobaissi, Henrik Anassian and Cameron Sweeten.

Burbank suited just six players, something Potts said that is common with his summer program.

066

“For summer, I split the two varsity teams anyway so we’ll be playing with seven,” Potts said. “I believe in development and that everyone is getting maximum repetitions. “

The Bulldogs fell behind 20-9 early on, but cut things to as close as 23-21.

But the deeper St. Francis team pushed the lead back up and cruised to the victory.

Very impressive for the Bulldogs against St. Francis was 5-foot-1 sophomore-to-be Tyrese Willis, who played on the junior varsity team at Village Christian last year.

076

The point guard showed great quickness and appears to be able to cause mismatches for opponents.

Also suiting up for the Bulldogs were Anthony Miloyan, Faraz Khander, Ben Chavez, Avi Rivera and Luke Johnson.
