Burroughs Outlasts Burbank in VIBL Action

Max DeAmici’s three-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Burroughs to a 5-3 VIBL victory at home against Burbank. In a game featuring many of last year’s junior varsity players, the Indians prevailed behind the timely hitting of DeAmici and Roy Hirota.

Burroughs’ Andres Cano and Burbank’s Randy Higgens pitched extremely well in a possible preview of future duels from the talented two juniors. Higgens was a key member of  Burbank’s league championship JV team last season.

Burbank scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning when Camden Palmisano (two hits) drove in Cameron Briggs on a ground-out. Briggs had a productive day at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Burroughs responded with two runs in the bottom of the third when Hirota smashed a deep drive over the head of Bulldogs’ left fielder Alex Tarandek to drive in Omar Tejada and Jake Noud on a stand-up double.

The Bulldogs scored to tie the game at two apiece when Connor Lockheimer scored on an errant throw from Hirota, playing catcher, back to Cano. It was one of nine errors combined by both teams.

With two outs, DeAmici unloaded his big hit over right fielder and former teammate Ozzie Dominguez, a Burroughs transfer, to give the Indians the lead for good at 5-2.

“You are always looking to get hits but when they come with two outs they seem to be a little more special,” Burroughs coach Kiel Holmes said. “You like it when your guys aren’t afraid to attack the ball when their backs are against the wall.”

Burbank fought back to score a run in the top of the seventh on an Alex Minnick RBI double. With the bases loaded, Tarandek grounded out to Indians’ second baseman Tanner Whitlock to end the game.

Higgens threw six innings allowing four hits, no earned runs and striking out eight. Cano gave up three hits and no earned runs in four innings of work. He struck out three and walked only two.

While Burbank (1-8) struggles to find an identity early on in the summer with little to no varsity experience returning from last season’s championship squad, Burroughs (5-2) has made progress with wins against Chatsworth (Valley North), Granada Hills, Royal and now Burbank.

“Ultimately wins and losses don’t mean anything. We are 5-2 right now and we could be 0-7. We are a young team in age and even younger mentally,” Holmes said. “We have a lot of progress to make. We are moving forward but we have a long ways to go. That’s what summer is all about. Not wins and losses.”

The two cross-town rivals meet again on July 15 at Burbank at 7 p.m.

Yogurtland was the place to be this past Saturday as temperatures were close to 100 degrees.  The opening of the new story on Victory Blvd at Buena Vista was a welcome relief and was well enjoyed. The company took over the location of 31 Flavors and put plenty of work into the building with bright colors and a nice outdoor patio for customers.

Burbank Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy was on hand to present the owners with a Certification of Recognition. The Grand Opening brought out a crowd of well over 1,000 people to enjoy the cold desert.

Along with Burbank’s Mayor, there were a couple of Lakers Girls who posed for pictures and signed autographs. Burbank High School Assistant Baseball Coach Tony Sandoval was first in line to pose with the girls Mekayla and Rachael.  He thought both the frozen yogurt and the girls were both cool treats for a hot day.

A Very Costly Trip To The Theatre

An elderly Encino woman drove to Burbank Saturday evening to see a play at the Colony Theatre, located at 555 N. Third St.  After parking her car in the parking structure next to the theater at 6:40 p.m., she began walking toward the entrance.

A man ran up from behind the 81 year-old woman and snatched her purse.  The thief, described as Black or Hispanic around 25 years old, 5’4” to 5’6” in height, ans wearing a yellow t-shirt, ran to a nearby older red pick up truck and fled the area.  The purse contained cash, credit cards, and the woman’s cell phone.  Fortunately, she was not injured.

The Burbank Police Department is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them at 8180-238-3000.   They also caution the public to always be vigilant in parking structures, and to look around before they park or exit their vehicles.
Car Owner Catches Thief In The Act – Police Catch Suspect

The owner of a 2000 Buick sedan parked in the 700 block of N. Pass Ave., noticed a man in his car shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, and asked the man what he was doing in his car.  The man, who was apparently stealing cash and the vehicle’s registration card, didn’t stop to answer the owner’s question.  He fled on foot.

Shortly after that, a Burbank Police Officer on patrol happened to drive by.  The victim flagged down the officer and explained what had just happened.   Officers began searching the area and located the suspect a few blocks away at Pass Ave. and Toluca Park Dr.  The stolen cash and vehicle registration were found on the suspect.

The suspect, Jesse Lee Showalter, 18, of Burbank, was placed under arrest for petty theft and booked into the Burbank Jail.  His bail was set at $1,000.

Police Finally Catch Elusive Suspect

Two weeks after Burbank Police surrounded the area around the 1800 block of Frederic St. looking for an assault with a deadly weapon suspect who wasn’t there, the man has finally been found and arrested.

The incident began on June 13, around 10:20 p.m. when the father of suspect Ian MacNeil called the Burbank Police Department to report that his son was holding a gun to the head of the son’s girlfriend.  Officers responded “code 3” to the residence at 1826 N. Frederic St.  In past incidents with police, MacNeil had fled the scene, so officers set up a perimeter on the streets around the home.

Because MacNeil was armed with an automatic handgun, police waited until a team could be formed to cautiously search the interior, garage, and backyard of the home.  One police car was used to block the driveway in case the suspect attempted to leave in a car that was parked there.  The police helicopter circled overhead, using heat-sensing radar to attempt to locate the suspect.

Suspect MacNeil’s girlfriend, Elyssa Diaz, 22, of Van Nuys, was found in her car that was parked in the driveway of the home.  According to police the couple had an argument.  She had run from the house after MacNeil had placed the gun to her head, and locked herself in her car.  MacNeil reportedly threw something through the back window.  Diaz was found hiding in the car.

Nearly every available police unit in the city was tied up for search operation that lasted nearly one and a half hours. Police were considering requesting help from the Glendale Police Department, when the search for the suspect was halted after it was determined that MacNeil was not there. The Burbank Fire Department was standing by a block away in case they were needed.

On the afternoon of June 26, police again converged on the 1800 block of Frederic St., after a report of a disturbance at the home.  Based on previous contact with the Ian MacNeil, officers responded in force and conducted a search of the house and yard in an effort to locate him.  He was not there.

Finally on June 27, investigators from the Burbank Police Department located the suspect in the backyard of his father’s home.   Ian MacNeil was placed under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon from the original incident on June 13.  During the arrest officers found evidence that resulted in MacNeil also being arrested for identity theft. He also had violated the terms of his parole.

In yet another twist to the case the victim in the assault with a deadly weapon, MacNeil’s girlfriend Elyssa Diaz, was also arrested for identity theft and probation violation.   Both MacNeil and Diaz are being held without bail due to their parole and probation violations.  The boyfriend and girlfriend are obviously not sharing the same cell in jail, however.

Man Demanding A Kiss Assaults Clerk At Mall

A young woman working at the Mica Makeup Kiosk at the Burbank Town Center was attacked by a young man who attempted to kiss the woman, Tuesday evening.

According to Burbank Police, the suspect approached the clerk shortly after 8 p.m., telling her he wanted to purchase makeup for his mother.  As the woman showed the man makeup, he stated to her that he wanted to “…bite those lips.”   The suspect then placed his hands on her cheeks and tried to kiss her.  The woman pulled away.

A friend of the woman, who was nearby, saw what was happening and came to the kiosk in an attempt to help her friend.  The suspect reportedly told this woman that her friend was “hot” and that he wanted to kiss her.  She told the man that she was going to call mall security, and went back to her kiosk to make the call.

The suspect then turned his attention back to the victim, and again attempted to kiss her.  The woman turned away, and the suspect ended up biting her on the back of her left shoulder.  The man then fled the area in an unknown direction.  The 20 year-old victim received bruises and a red mark approximately 2-4 inches long, to her back as a result of the assault.

The suspect is described as 19 years old, possibly Asian, 5 ft. 7 in. tall, weighing between 140 and 150 lbs. He was wearing a long sleeved shirt with a white and red plaid pattern, and light colored Levis.  He was also wearing diamond earrings.   Anyone who may have witnesses the attack, or has information about the suspect, should call the Burbank Police Department at 818-238-3210.

Police Respond To Assault Call On California Street

Nearly every available police unit was dispatched to a report of a woman being assaulted Sunday evening.  Several police units responded “Code 3” (red lights and siren) to California St. between Chandler and Burbank Blvds. Around 9:30 p.m.

Arriving officer found that a female juvenile had been assaulted by a male juvenile.  The victim was in the 1200 block of California.  The Burbank Fire Department responded with an engine company and paramedic rescue ambulance.  The unidentified girl was transported to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, with what appeared to be non-major injuries.

Paramedics also responded just up the street to the 1300 block of California to treat the male juvenile suspect.   Police had a supervisor respond with a protective headgear helmet for the suspect.  According to police, the helmet is used when a suspect in custody might injure themselves by banging their head against the inside of the police car.

According to police, the unidentified boy was placed under arrest.  They described the situation as a case of domestic violence.

Citizens Alert Police To Man Kicking Woman

A citizen flagged down police officers Thursday around 2:19 p.m., on Victory Blvd. near Olive Ave., to report that they saw a man kick a female in the stomach in front of a business around the corner on Olive Ave.

The officers then walked around the 7-Eleven to the parking lot in front of 255 W. Olive Ave., where they observed a group of people. The man the citizen had just described to them was yelling at a woman and two other people.  The man appeared to be intoxicated.

One witness told officers that they saw the man attempt to kick the female but miss, before lifting his leg again and kicking her in the stomach.  Three more witnesses also told officers that the saw the man kick the woman in the stomach.

The victim, an unidentified 31 year-old woman from Van Nuys, had no visible injuries.  She did complain of abdominal pain, but said she would seek her own medical treatment. Her relationship to the suspect is also unknown.

The suspect, Leonel Nunez Gomez, 35, of Compton, was handcuffed and placed in the backseat of a police car.  While the officers were conducting their investigation, the suspect kicked the left rear window of the police car several times.  He eventually dislodged the window from its track.

Gomez was placed under arrest for making criminal threats, spousal battery, threatening a police officer, and vandalism (for damaging the police car).  He was booked into the Burbank Jail.  His bail was set at $50,000.

A full brush response was dispatched which included an additional Battalion Chief from Glendale.

Upon arriving at the scene, Engine 16 reported that they smelled smoke in the area and the informant who called in the fire directed them back into Wildwood Canyon to the access road that serves the Police Firing Range.

About 30 yards up the hill was a small brush fire that had just started and quick work by firefighters surrounded the blaze and were able to knock it down before it spread to the trees in  the area, which could have erupted the fire along with flying embers.

Firefighters were able to knockdown the fire at 1:05 am and remained on scene until they had 100% containment.  The fire covered a total about about a quarter acre in rugged terrain.

Police were dispatched to take a statement from the witness and a fire investigator was also dispatched to try and find the cause of the fire. The results have not been released as of this time.

There were no injuries reported.

Burbank All-Stars Claim Section 2 Championship

(The following information was provided by parents of the Burbank All-Stars)

The wins keep on coming.

For Manager Sergio Ortega, Coach Lewis Oberlander, Coach Gary Valenzuela, Coach Michael Hooper and the 12 &13 year-old Little League All-Stars from Burbank, this is an exciting time.

After Burbank edged Crescenta Valley, 3-2, to win the District 16 Little League’s “Intermediate 50/70 Baseball Division” championship two weeks ago, it was on to Canyon Country for the Section 2 tournament.

With their backs against the wall having lost their opening game on June 29 in the Baseball All-Stars Intermediate 50/70 Section 2 tournament, Burbank came up big on June 30 with a doubleheader sweep to advance to the next round which will be held in the City of Orange this weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, Burbank was limited to three hits in a 5-2 loss to Canyon Country creating a must-win situation on Sunday in the best-of-three series. A doubleheader sweep was needed to advance.

The two teams met up again last Sunday in Canyon Country with both squads throwing their left-handed aces – Burbank’s Austin Oberlander and Canyon Country’s Dean Morgan. The two were locked in a scoreless game until the bottom half of the fourth inning when Oberlander hit a run scoring single between the shortstop and third baseman.

Burbank added two runs in the fifth inning before Morgan, who was extremely effective on the hill and kept his team close, was removed having tossed nearly 90 pitches. Burbank’s offense came to life after that, breaking the game open en route to a 9-0 final.

Oberlander was dominant, pitching a complete game shutout. The win led to the deciding game where Burbank’s offensive production at the plate continued.

The team scored 16 runs in the deciding game, which was plenty of support for Anton Prather on the mound for Burbank. Prather, using an effective mix of pitches including a sharp breaking ball, kept Canyon Country’s hitters off-balance and went the distance in a 16-6 final that was called after the 10-run Little League mercy rule.

Canyon Country’s Dean Morgan blasted a three run homer over the right center field fence.

A driver and his passenger escaped seriously injury early Friday morning, when their vehicle struck several parked cars before flipping over and landing on its roof.

Burbank Police, Burbank Fire and Paramedics responded to the 500 block of East Magnolia Blvd. around 1:20 am to a reported overturned car with the occupants possibly trapped.  Burbank police were only blocks away and arrived within minutes to find an overturned Cadillac SUV sitting on its roof  in the middle of the street.  Three nearby unoccupied parked cars were damaged. The occupants of the SUV, the 38 year-old driver and his teenaged daughter,  were able to get out of the vehicle on there own.  Paramedics checked them out and determined that they had only scrapes and bruises.

Burbank police checked the driver and passenger for any signs of intoxication and found none. Their investigation at the scene indicated that  it appeared the driver may have fallen asleep before  he struck the parked cars and overturned.  The Burbank Police Traffic Bureau will follow-up the investigation.

An alert business owner and a fast response from the Burbank Police Department caused a team of 4th of July burglars to beat a hasty retreat and leave their loot behind.

The Police Communications Center received a call from the owner of the Electronics Depot & Repair, at 11 p.m. Thursday, reporting that his surveillance cameras had detected a burglary in progress.  Officers immediately went to the business at 919 N. Isabel St.

As more units arrived and attempted to surround the area, the owner kept updating the Communications Center on the burglars’ activity, until one of the burglars knocked out the video camera.  The owner reported seeing four suspects dressed in khakis and white, wearing black masks.  He could see a white van being loaded with dozens of new laptop computers, cameras, and other electronics.

The burglars had cut a hole in the business’ large overhead door and crawled inside.  They apparently were careful not to set off the alarm as they took an estimated 100 laptop computers and other items outside to the van.  When officers entered the business, they found that the suspects were not inside.

Business Burglary on Iasbel-4The van and the merchandise were left behind at the business.  Police determined that the van appeared to have been stolen from a business located just a couple of blocks away in the 1000 block on N. Lake St..  It’s ignition had been punched out, and the engine was left running. The van was impounded so police could check from any fingerprints.

Although police attempted to surround the area, the suspects had apparently escaped by climbing over a rear wall into neighbor business property and fleeing the area when the first police car arrived in the area.   The case will be turned over to the detectives for investigation.

National Night Out is a nationwide, one-night rally, where citizens and law enforcement join forces to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Last year, over 1,100 people participated in the event.

All Burbank citizens and businesses are encouraged to celebrate with neighbors on their block, by working together to make a difference, planning a barbeque, block party, or meeting outdoors. Get to know your neighbors and discuss emergency preparedness, neighborhood watch, or safety issues that will enhance the quality of life in your neighborhood.

For those citizens who do not have time to plan their own event, come join the City of  Burbank’s official block party on the Chandler Bike Path. Information booths, exhibits, and food will be available. Parking is limited to availability on the surrounding streets.

If you need assistance in planning a block party for the evening or want to get involved in Neighborhood Watch, contact Officer Joshua Kendrick of the Burbank Police Department at jkendrick@burbankca.gov (818-238-3223).

Supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and the Greater East Valley came out to Gordon Biersch Restaurant for a tapping party in honor of its 25th anniversary brew on Tuesday evening.

The club provides after-school and summer programs for boys and girls ages 6 to 18. Youngsters are offered opportunities in leadership, health and life skills, education and career development, the arts and sports and fitness.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Scholarships Fund, allowing more youngsters to attend the summer and school-year programs, said Chief Executive Officer Shanna Warren.

This was the second time Gordon Biersch had coordinated a fundraiser for the club and it drew more people than the first event, Warren said. Half of those attending are special patrons of the restaurant that come to support the tapping nights.

Kellye Vassar, assistant general manager of Gordon Biersch Restaurant, worked with the club to organize the fundraiser.

“I want to thank Gordon Biersch for coordinating the fundraiser for us,” Warren said. “They do it for Burbank Temporary Aid Center and I believe that BTAC Chief Executive Officer Barbara Howell recommended the Boys & Girls Club to Gordon Biersch and so I am very grateful that they chose to add us to the list of nonprofits they support in Burbank.”

Among the more than 75 guests attending were educators Sandi Sutter, Lesli Melchor and Sonia Arce; actress Bergen Williams from “General Hospital”; Zonta Club President Grace Farenbaugh; and Donna and Scott Hall, coming all the way from Simi Valley.

The Boys & Girls Club is also benefitting this month from a fundraising project implemented by JCPenney. When customers check out, register employees will ask them if they would like to round up their total to the nearest dollar, which will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club.

“They do that for us every year,” Warren said. “All those funds will come to our club to support the Project Learn program, which provides tutoring and homework assistance to club members.”

Over the summer, Warren said there are many activities for youngsters from academic programs to recreation. There are educational projects geared to Summer Learning Loss to keep kids up to speed as they prepare to start the next grade level, such as spelling bees, math science projects and academic decathlons.

Also this summer, the club is partnering with DeBell Golf Course and the Professional Golfers’ Assn. on a pilot program to provide youngsters with golf lessons. Golden State Gymnastics in Burbank allows club members to come twice a week for free gymnastics classes.

“It’s great because we can walk there,” Warren said.

Showing resiliency and toughness, the Burroughs football team overcame a 1-4 record in pool play to capture the “Consolation” championship of the Santa Fe 7-on-7 passing tournament this past Saturday.

The Indians came out slow with three straight losses to St. Bonaventure 30-26, West Torrance 30-23, and California 30-26. JBHS regrouped and beat North Torrance, 25-19, before losing to Sierra Canyon, 26-20, to close-out pool play.

Their dubious record put them into the consolation side of the tournament. Then Burroughs played its best football of the day winning three straight – defeating Lawndale 30-10, Ontario Christian 30-18 and Long Beach Cabrillo in the consolation championship game, 29-25, with a great defensive effort late in the day to take the game away from a very talented and quick Cabrillo team.

Great performances on the day included Jake Nutty (wide receiver), Conor Joyce (wide receiver), Andrew Williams (quarterback) on offense while Cameron Rodriguez (linebacker), Davion Barker (cornerback), Aiden Anding (cornerback) and Javier Pineda (free safety) shined on defense.

She snapped up five honors — more than anyone — in the San Fernando Valley Art Club’s Summer Art Exhibition during the opening reception at the Burbank Creative Arts Center Gallery.

“I’m thrilled!” said the Studio City resident. “It’s exciting for me. I did not expect anything.”

Her Best of Show and People’s Choice awards are for the same oil painting “Lilies in My Garden.” She took a photograph of lilies in her backyard and painted the image.

She began her journey in visual arts with mixed media nine years ago and then started painting abstracts and doing collage two years later. She has been painting Impressionism and portraits for two years, studying with La Crescenta artist Margot Lennartz.

Marian Fortunati received first place in Best of Show and Best Naturescape for her oil painting titled “Casting About in the Great Unknown.” She was inspired to paint the scene of a lone fisherman in the river against a backdrop of rugged terrain while on her recent trip through the Grand Canyon on a raft for two weeks.

The title was a play on words — the Great Unknown, refers to the first passage through the Grand Canyon by river made by explorer John Wesley Powell and casting as in the fishing term, Fortunati said.

Trisha Bennett who was attending the opening reception liked Fortunati’s painting because of the scale, the color and the fluidity the artist gave to the green water, she said.

Other Best of Show winners were Jennifer Bentson, of Glendale, second place; and Jane Thorpe, third place.

Judging the show was tough task, said artist Tim Forcum of Silver Lake.

“When I first came into the gallery, I felt all the artists should be rewarded for their hard work,” he said. “Seeing the effort, creativity and the passion here was very touching.”

The show consists of portraits, landscapes and still life that are illustrated in oil, watercolor, mixed media, cut paper and acrylic collage.

Club member Ricardo Cerezo was the exhibit chairman.

The show continues through July 25 at the art center, which is at 1100 W. Clark Ave. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The next show, Pottery Instructors Exhibit, showcases work by those who teach at the Creative Arts Center. it opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 2. Instructors participating are Veronica Ferrantelli, Debbie Henson, Michael Hirsh, Claude Hulce, Jack Paul Miller, Barbara Rog, Frances Santistevan and Judy Springborn.

The victim, an 18 year-old woman from Palm Springs, had answered an ad on Craigalist, an online classified ad service, for a 2009 Honda Civic.  According to Lt. John Dilibert of the Burbank Police, the woman met with the suspects in Burbank and purchased the car for $10,600. She then returned home to Palm Springs with the car.

On Sunday morning, the woman awoke to find her newly purchased car gone.  She contacted the Palm Springs Police Department to report the stolen car, and was told by them that the “pink slip” vehicle title paper was a fake.  She had been scammed by the sellers.  They then advised the woman to contact the Burbank Police Department, since the crime had been committed in Burbank.

Officers from the Burbank Police Department located the car for sale ad on Craigslist and set up the sting operation, agreeing to meet the suspects near the Ralphs Market parking lot at San Fernando Blvd. and Cornell Dr. The suspects, Kayla Alena Pouncy, 18, and Jose DeJesus Madrigal, 30, both of Vallejo, showed up at the location with the car shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday.  Pouncy was in the Honda Civic, and Madrigal was in another car nearby.

According to police, the undercover officers identified themselves and detained Pouncy.  Madrigal, who was driving the second car, returned to the scene where Pouncy was being detained. When officers approached his car and attempted to talk to Madrigal, he sped away. One officer was knocked off balance by the car.  He was not injured.

The fleeing suspect only got a block away before his car stalled.  Madrigal then jumped out of his car and attempted to run into McCambridge Park with police in hot pursuit.  An officer was able to tackle the suspect and take him into custody near Scott Rd. and San Fernando Blvd.   Madrigal, who was barefoot, suffered a scratch on his toe and redness to his back.  No officers were injured during the arrest.

Both suspects were arrested for grand theft.  Madrigal was also arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.  His bail was set at $30,000.  Pouncy’s bail was set at $20,000.  Police were able to recover most of the money that the pair had taken from their victim.    They are also interested in hearing from anyone else who may have been a victim or come into contact with the pair.    The case is being presented to the District Attorney to determine what charges the pair will face.
