Four catalytic converters were taken off of vehicles throughout Burbank overnight from Tuesday, May 6, to Wednesday, May 7, according to police.
“Every so often, we have a group of suspects who come through town and steal catalytic converters,” said Sgt. Darin Ryburn of the Burbank Police Department. “They look for higher profile vehicles, crawl right under them and use a blow torch or reciprocating saw to cut the catalytic converter right off the underside of the vehicle.”
The catalytic converters are usually then sold to metal recycling businesses which mine the platinum, palladium and rhodium from the item. While the parts are each worth $500-1000 to replace, they can be sold for scrap metal and fetch up to $200 each.
Catalytic converter thefts were reported from a 2001 Acura on the 300 block of E. Alameda Avenue, a 1999 Toyota Tacoma on the 1300 block of Lamer St., a 1998 Nissan Frontier on the 1800 block of N. Lima St. and a 1998 Nissan Frontier on the 1300 block of Pass Avenue.
