With team success comes the individual accolades and that’s one reason why Burroughs High junior tailback Chance Bell was recently chosen the Pacific League Player of the Year.
Despite getting banged up late in the season with shoulder and knee injuries, Bell managed to churn out 1,378 yards on 178 carries.
Bell found the end zone for 23 touchdowns, finished with 1,485 all-purpose yards, had six games in which he topped 100 yards, and helped the Indians to a magical campaign in which they went 9-1, including 7-0 in league for the first time since 2006.

Meanwhile, Burroughs senior quarterback Steven Hubbell was named the Offensive Player of the Year after closing his career by throwing for 1,820 yards with 27 touchdowns and six interceptions. When the passing lanes were closed, Hubbell scrambled for six scores and 250 yards on 87 carries.
As the field general, Hubbell’s efforts were instrumental as the Indians (10-2 overall) reached the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division quarterfinals, which ended with a 21-7 loss to host St. Francis.

The Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Indians’ senior lineman Cole Gurley, who had 10 sacks, 14 solo tackles and 45 assists, and Burbank’s junior defensive back Andy Reyes, who finished with 132 total tackles including 94 solo and four sacks.
Burroughs seniors Bryce Martinez and Anthony Garcia each were tabbed co-Lineman of the Year and longtime head man Keith Knoop was selected Pacific League Coach of the Year.
Burbank senior wide receiver Max Weisman (369 yards on 25 receptions with four scores), senior place kicker Andrew Hank (43 of 46 extra points with two field goals and a long of 42 yards) and junior offensive lineman Anthony Hernandez, all made the first team and helped the Bulldogs (6-5 overall including a 41-21 setback to Dominguez Compton in the opening-round) to a second-place finish in league along with Crescenta Valley.
Also on the first team was Burroughs senior wide receiver Erick Hernandez (844 all-purpose yards and 532 yards on 36 catches with 13 touchdowns), junior lineman Jesse Chamberlain and senior lineman Justin Gonzalez.

On the defensive side, Burroughs senior linebacker Connor Garden (20 solo tackles with 46 assists and two interceptions) and senior Robert Awunganyi (23 solo tackles with 29 assists and three picks) were also honored.
Burbank was also represented as senior defensive lineman Jha’rod Horhn (24 solo tackles, 20 assists and seven sacks), junior defensive back Forest Fajardo (five picks and 57 tackles including 41 solo) and junior punter Danny Porras (34.5 average with a best of 66 yards) were first-teamers.
The second team offense consisted of Burroughs senior wide receiver Cade Borland (430 yards on 36 catches and four scores) and junior center Tommy Howe.
Also on the squad were Burbank sophomore running back Darnell Williams (860 all-purpose and 585 yards on 122 carries with five touchdowns) and senior lineman David Chavez.
On the defensive side, Burbank junior linebacker Matthew Villagran (38 total tackles including 21 solo with two sacks and one forced fumble), senior lineman Daniel Amaya (28 total tackles including 15 solo and one sack), senior defensive back David Medrano (43 assists with 39 solo tackles and two sacks) and junior defensive back Miguel Vasquez (34 solo tackles, 27 assists and one pick) were selected.

The rest of the second team defense consisted of Burroughs senior linebacker Branden Garcia (66 assists with 12 solo tackles), senior defensive back Jarret Wrobel (26 solo tackles and 26 assists with five interceptions) and senior defensive back Delvin Jimenez (38 assists, 21 solo tackles, one and a half sacks and three interceptions).
Honorable mention went to Burroughs senior linebacker Jose Chicas Ortiz (11 solo tackles, 42 assists, three and a half sacks and two fumble recoveries), senior wide receiver Torin Harris (221 yards on 18 catches with three touchdowns) and Burbank senior lineman Richard Cifuentes.
