Burbank Fire Department was dispatched at 6:30 Monday evening along with Fire units from Glendale, Pasadena and Los Angeles City Fire to rescue a stranded female in the Los Angeles River near the Riverside Bridge.

Glendale Engine 27 along with Burbank Engine 15 were flagged down by a witness near the Victory off ramp of the 134 Freeway, where they said they saw a lady with some backpacks and a bike on a Island in the middle of the flowing river bed.
Burbank Firefighters train frequently on river rescues and on this rescue they were assigned to the rivers east bank. Glendale Battalion 2 took command of the incident and requested Pasadena Fire Departments USAR along with a truck company who used their equipment to lower a Firefighter into the river bed with a special harness. Once in the river bed on the island, they put a body harness on the female victim and raised her to awaiting firefighters on the bridge.

Glendale Paramedics were waiting to check out the woman, who appeared not to have any injures. She had been trapped by the rushing water on both sides. While she was being checked out, firefighters lifted her bicycle and personal property from the island.

Burbank Engine 15 was cleared from the scene and returned to their station as the members of the other departments broke down the emergency equipment they had used. Los Angeles Police closed the bridge while the rescue was taking place.
The stranded female checked out ok and got on her bike and rode away thanking her rescuers as she peddled toward Burbank from the bridge.

Local news stations covered the story from ground and air, and televised the rescue live on the evening news.
